Top gifts
On your way to or from the Alhambra you will come across many shops–workshops concentrated on the Cuesta de Gomérez, one of the many places in the city where you can buy handcrafted flamenco instruments. Then there are the items of “taracea” (Granada marquetry) that are sold in the Alcaicería, behind the Cathedral, along with ceramic pottery and tiles, silver jewellery and teapots, interesting gifts and for all budgets. Granada’s multicultural nature pervades the shops around Plaza Nueva, Elvira, Calderería and Carrera del Darro, filled to the brim with spices, kilims, lanterns, cosmetics and other oriental products and attire … a real temptation for those fond of shopping.
Flavours of Granada: avocados, custard apples, asparagus and other Mediterranean fruit and produce from the coast, the fertile plains and the Alpujarra (dried tomatoes and peppers, olives, olive oil, wines, etc.), together with the delicious pastries
with their unmistakeable Arab taste, or the monastic confectionery (also with Arab origins).
In the city centre shops you will find the best Spanish and international designers: go shopping in the largest open centre in Andalusia.

Eating out in the open air is a pleasure that Granada offers in nearly every season. Having tapas in the city centre, or with views of the Alhambra from any of the charming carmens–restaurants in the Albaicín, the food experience blends with the magic and romanticism of the setting.
Top pleasures In the months of good weather, which in Granada means almost the whole year, you can savour in its colours and aromas: the
flowering of the mock orange and wisteria along fences and pergolas, the outburst of geraniums on the balconies, the scent of jasmine and those magnificent pitas that Lorca called “petrified octopus”. For a dose of relaxation, you cannot beat a couple of hours in a hammam or Arab bath: both your body and soul will thank you for it. Continue with a tea in the Calderería and let the night carry you away around the
streets of Elvira, Plaza Nueva and Paseo de los Tristes: the best way to get into the spirit is to dine outside in a night–time ambience that has made Granada famous
the world over, and which, if you’re not careful, will only end at daybreak.

Top sights Nobody can forget the first time they saw the Alhambra (1), a place that is unique in the world: the
fantasy of sultans who wished to recreate paradise in Granada. Close your eyes in the Patio de los Arrayanes (2) [Courtyard of the Myrtles] or in the Patio de los Leones (3) [Courtyard of the Lions] and you will feel how it was made with light, water and perfume, along with marble, plaster and ceramic tiles. This inspiring walk ends in the gardens of the Generalife (4), lavish in its vegetation and freshness.
The Catholic Monarchs also wished to create something grand in this city and they commissioned the most beautiful Cathedral (5) of their reign, as a symbol of Christianity and in an attempt to be on a par with the spectacular Moorish monuments, as well as the Capilla Real (6) [Royal Chapel] where the two monarchs are laid to rest… although they are certainly surrounded by a hive of activity: just a stone’s throw away you will find the café terraces of the Plaza Bib–Rambla, the busy market area of the Alcaicería (8) and the Corral del Carbón (7), another example of Moorish architectural splendour and of how Granada fills its monuments and historic legacy with life.
ALHAMBRA AND GENERALIFEAccess by bus: “Alhambra bus” minibus, departure from Calle Pavaneras (next to Plaza Isabel la Católica): no. 30 and 32.
It is a good idea to book in advance due to the large numbers of visitors all year round.Telephone Bookings: 902 888 001.Calling from abroad: 00 34 934 923 750.www.alhambra-patronato.es
In the grounds of the Alhambra, you may visit the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of the Alhambra (free admission for EU citizens).
This visit is included in the Granada Card.
Close to the Cathedral, the Monastery of San Jerónimo, where the Gran Capitán [Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba] is buried,
preserves a magnificent altarpiece in its high altar. And it is indeed worth visiting
the Monastery of la Cartuja (9) —there are buses from the city centre— as its tabernacle is possibly the greatest
masterpiece of the Spanish Baroque style.

Top routes
Treat yourself to an afternoon in the Realejo district: you will come across the Carmen de los Mártires and the Carmen de la Fundación Rodríguez Acosta, among
other treasures, both harbouring two of the prettiest and delightful gardens in the whole city.
As you stroll downhill and towards the centre, you are within reach of many other interesting places: the small square of the Puerta del Sol, the Campo del Príncipe, or Santo Domingo (the church and square).
Granada is best discovered if you visit on foot, wandering and enjoying the light, the views and the constant surprises. Start at Plaza Nueva (1) and go the length of the Carrera del Darro (3) and the Paseo de los Tristes (4), alongside the River Darro, in a charming succession of bridges, convents and palatial houses, at the foot of the Alhambra hill. The Real Chancillería [Royal Chancellery], the Church of Santa Ana (2), the Bañuelo [Arab Baths], the Cadí Bridge or the Archaeological Museum are well worth stopping at.
For a genuine ramble, nothing beats the labyrinth of the Albaicín (5), and you will immediately see why it is a World Heritage Site. There is magic in every corner, and you can easily lose yourself amid its small squares, “carmens” (typical Andalusian houses with a garden) and astounding views. The most usual place to admire the Alhambra is from the Mirador de San Nicolás (6) [one of the best viewpoints], but you can also choose your own personal spot.
And another stroll, which in itself is a destination, will take you to the Sacromonte (7), an area filled with pathways, prickly pear bushes and spectacular viewpoints, replete with true flavour and a flamenco feel. You will just love its cave–homes and its curious landscape.
