KEY TAKE-AWAYS

Waste Diversion is a “TEAM SPORT”

- View best practices utilized as part of venue waste diversion

- Requires a team like effort to insure successful food/food

serviceware waste diversion

Gain insights about Professional & Collegiate Zero

Waste programs in other regions

Appreciate the complexities of how one company

(NatureWorks) and its global partners have positioned

“Zero Waste” success

- Case Studies from venues/stadiums/etc. activities

- Knowing that these actions/outcomes having global applicability

• Offense (procurement) & Defense (operations) together = Victory

• Procurement secures Food/Food Serviceware that

Operations disposes

• Historically cost & performance impact Food Serviceware

selection

• Subject to global region residency, how often is Procurement

thinking about disposal costs?

• Operations inherit Procurement’s decisions (fan’s waste) as

part of disposal, ultimately impacting landfill diversion

Opportunity to Introduce TOTAL SYSTEM COSTS into the Discussion

WASTE DIVERSION IS A TEAM SPORT

Introduced a renewable / compostable food serviceware

approach that complimented Food Waste diversion

• Diverting two waste streams vs. one

• Reducing recycling (organic) contamination

• Avoiding landfill (carbon footprint)

Other take-aways

• Most venues prefer LOCAL SUPPLY

• Sometimes economics from local converters can’t compete with

Ingeo based food serviceware imports

• One advantage of a global supply network - “identifiable” and certified

compostable food serviceware to address local competitive pricing

Established the bar for future Olympics to target – and exceed

GLOBAL EXPOSURE

Critical for multiple waste streams to tie-into a single

collection container

• Collection stations vs. the use of multiple single collection

bins/containers

• Waste collection capabilities (multi-waste stream based containers)

• Ability to clearly match the waste item to the waste slot

The Single-Use Food Service Industry accounts for large amounts of solid waste

Nearly most food and single-use food serviceware waste is diverted to landfill

Page 11: VENUE SUCCESS STORIES IN ZERO WASTE - AN INTERNATIONAL ... · Enhances the Chemical Properties of Soils. Compost increases macro- and micronutrient content, increases availability

There is a cost as one compares food serviceware items to

another (i.e. traditional plastics vs biopolymer based plastics) • Where End of Life is an issue, there is a total system cost opportunity.

• Total System Cost is based on assessing a food serviceware item and its impact

on QSR* or closed/open venue operational costs (i.e. waste and disposal).

Compostable food serviceware can contribute to total system cost reductions.

• Diverting food/compostable packaging waste streams (or two waste streams)

into one commercial compostable waste stream

• Reducing tipping/hauling fees and landfill disposal costs

• If one assess total system costs (food serviceware and its disposal costs), one

can present as economic case for cost savings (i.e. closed/open venues today).

Growing interest to look at Ingeo clear cup recycling and “possibly” a new

landfill diversion success with potential cost savings (i.e. closed venue based)

Pursue zero waste programs as “coordinator” – engaging:

• Global converting partner(s) – local and regionally based

• End of Life (use) options – composting, recycling and other

• Venues (professional/collegiate, entertainment, airports, etc.)

• Owners, operators and existing supply chain

• Key associations tying-in respective best practices

• Strategic partners based on the expertise they bring

One goal in mind – implement zero waste solutions

game football (US) to “zero waste”

• Stadium

• The Suites

• Tailgate Area

Targeted two suites (President and

Governor)

• Engaged administration in this

activity

• Pursue as a “supply chain team”

Diversion rate increased to 100%

Home of the Pittsburgh Pirates Pioneers in the professional sports greening movement make sustainability the rule rather than the exception

Situation:

• In 2009, PNC Park generated 1,113 tons waste, 36% recycled

• “Let’s Go Bucs. Let’s Go Green” initiative introduced

Direct Environmental Benefits to Soil

Improves the Physical Properties of Soils. Compost increases

water holding, soil aeration, structural stability, resistance to water

and wind erosion, root penetration, and soil temperature

stabilization, thereby preventing turf losses on roadsides, hillsides,

playing fields, and golf courses.

Enhances the Chemical Properties of Soils. Compost

increases macro- and micronutrient content, increases availability

of beneficial minerals, ensures pH stability, and provides a long-

term source of nutrient input by acting as a nutrient reservoir, and

reduces fertilizer requirements by at least 50%.

Improves the Biological Properties of Soils. Compost

promotes the activity of beneficial micro-organisms, suppresses

certain plant diseases, promotes faster root development,

promotes higher yields of agricultural crops, and bonds heavy

metals, preventing migration to water resources absorbed by

plants.
