A WEE WELCOME to our newest little ones!
James Wyatt Sierra, son of Derek & Kay Sierra – August 19, 2017
Congratulations!
We all can breathe a sigh of relief during the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, as it could have been a lot worse. It was special to see the community of Avila pull together and make the most of an unpleasant situation, as many were without power for nearly a week. I wanted to acknowledge the entire community for all the goodwill that took place and the tireless efforts of the Avila staff getting the club back in operation.I am pleased to announce that we have named a new Director of Instruction, Matt Gagnon, who will join the team at Avila on November 1, 2017. Matt is a PGA member and originally from Gainesville, FL. He moved to Fort Myers to attend Florida Gulf Coast University’s Professional Golf Management Program. He has been involved with the game his entire life, playing in hundreds of junior events with dozens of wins and top 5 finishes. Post-graduation, Matt worked at The Plantation Golf & Country Club in Fort Myers, where he developed and introduced numerous instructional programs. He became the Plantation’s Lead Instructor and taught all skill levels. Prior to joining the Avila team, Matt was the Lead Instructor for the Andy Scott School of Golf in Fort Myers and oversaw instructional programs, scheduling, website design and marketing. Matt’s teaching experience is made up of over 5,000 hours of instruction.Matt embraces cutting edge technology, such as high-speed video analysis, Doppler radar diagnosis, and Trackman with students of all abilities. He feels that advanced technology improves diagnostics and training techniques, thus speeding up the learning process. Matt considers himself a coach, not just a swing instructor. Matt’s extensive golf background, attention to detail and simplistic approach has allowed him to become one of South Florida’s best instructors. We look forward to welcoming Matt to Avila.

Please review the Best of Broadway shows listed on this page. Avila’s theater program is very popular and we’re fortunate to enjoy excellent seats and discounted ticket prices at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. Unfortunately, many members often wait until the last minute to call me for theater tickets, and many times this season, tickets were no longer available. If you have an interest in any of the shows listed on this page, please send me an email to reserve tickets. You will not be billed until later, but by pre-reserving, we will be able to accommodate your ticket request.
**Regarding HAMILTON: It won’t be until February until we know how many tickets we can secure for Avila members. They will be limited, thus two tickets per membership in order to accommodate as many members as possible. Once the theater confirms the number of tickets we can purchase for Hamilton, and the ticket price, a notice will be sent via email to all members. Ticket requests must be sent to the Membership Office at [email protected] and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.Mary Beth Singh Director of Member Relations

CATERING
CORNERWelcome back to our members as I would like to wish you the happiest of holidays during the last quarter of 2017. The Vista Grille has been transformed into a new feel with Avila’s traditional black and gold colors as we introduce Chef Kent Specht’s Friday Night Fine Dining with tableside service. The Vista Grille will be our fine dining venue for lunch and dinner, and the Terrace and Men’s Grille for informal dining. Chef Randy has introduced his fresh bakery and breakfast items on weekends, which include home baked muffins, famous fried chicken biscuits and breakfast pizzas. We’re happy to introduce pizza by the slice at the Take-Out Window.
The new Avila Scramble kicks off Saturday, October 28th at 1pm. Our evening will conclude with a traditional Oktoberfest party following golf. Spouses of golfers are encouraged to attend. On November 2nd, enjoy the tastes of Brazil for our first Churrascaría, featuring Brazilian cuisine that includes an abundant salad bar and meats that will be cooked churrasco-style and served tableside. The events will take place from 6pm and please make your reservations early, as this will be a wonderful evening.
We will be sending out our Thanksgiving take-out menu soon and are pleased to introduce our new Thanksgiving at Avila Family-Style Dinner. All of the traditional dishes will be served tableside so you do not have to leave your chairs. Let us serve you ~ you deserve it!
Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your families.
Roberto ArzateFood and Beverage Director
Since first walking through the doors at Avila, I have felt nothing but kindness and the utmost respect from the Avila members. Originally from Vermont, I came from an upbringing to work hard, respect the people around me and treat everyone as if they were a part of my family. In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve already felt as if I’ve been welcomed into the Avila family.
I began my journey in Florida as the cocktail manager for Blue Martini and quickly became the Beverage and Assistant General Manager. When Blue Martini closed its doors earlier this year, I graciously accepted a management position at Bern’s Steak House. I was humbled and honored to receive an offer to join the Avila staff and am looking forward to serving and meeting each and every one of you and will work diligently to make the Club your home away from home.

EL MATADOR RESULTSThe inaugural El Matador de Avila took place on September 18 & 19, 2017. El Matador is a competition for Men’s 4.0 & 4.5 players where a 4.5 player is paired with a 4.0 player. Two rounds were played on Friday and two rounds were played on Saturday followed by an outstanding steak dinner at the clubhouse. Below are the results:

TENNIS TIP - V STRATEGYUse an imaginary “V” on your opponent’s side as a strategy. The lowest portion of the “V” starts at the net strap. The end of the “V” is at the baseline. You can make the “V” as wide or as narrow as you please. If your shots are bouncing and staying outside the “V”, that means that you are making your opponent run and hopefully hitting out of balance. If your shots are bouncing inside the “V”, your opponent is hitting his/her shot without having to work very hard.
Use the “V” for your next “V”ictory.

If you have not seen the newly renovated golf shop yet, please come visit! We’re very pleased with the new look and believe it better suits the needs of our members. We have many golf and non-golf items in stock, and if you want something we don’t carry, we’ll do our best to get it in stock. We have several new faces on the outside golf staff. A couple of these fine young men are looking
to make golf part of their future careers. We are always looking for ways to improve our service in all aspects of the golf operation, so if you have any thoughts, my office is always open and I’d love to hear from you.I know we will all have a fabulous golfing season, and the golf staff looks forward to making your golfing season the best one ever!

from the PRO turf TALKWith the summer maintenance behind us, I’d like to give you quick recap of what we accomplished over the past few months.
Our first aerification has always taken place at the end of April or beginning of May. This year we pushed it back to June and it was the most extensive one we’ve ever performed at Avila. During the greens aerification, we were able to remove almost 17%
of our organic matter in one shot by using big tines and grading in two directions. As summer moved on, our next aerification was performed in August and we were able to disturb 5% of our organic matter with a quick heal time. Our last aerification was done right after Labor Day with a process called Dry-ject. This process does not remove material, instead, it shoots sand into the greens leaving channels that aid in firming the soil to help improve water flow throughout the profile. This is a very crucial process going into the winter months.
We also took time to add new landscape beds to the left of #4 tee, behind #10 green, right of the cart path leaving #11 green going to #12 tee, right of #13 tee, right side of #13 green left of #14 tee, behind #14 green, and left of the range.
During the next few months I will be evaluating our current program. I will be looking for ways to eliminate down time and improve playing conditions through these processes. I look forward to seeing you on the course and, as always, if you have any questions please feel free to email me at [email protected].

Although this goes back to the spring, it should be recognized that on April 18th, Dr. Cary Williams made an ace on #17 with a 7-iron from 148 yards. He was playing with Mike Jones, John Yimoyines, Syd Heaton, and Gregg Smith. The whole 5-some said “It never left the flag! Landed right on the green and rolled perfectly into the cup!” Wow, what a great ace!
On May 30th, Randy Krafft jarred it on #5 with a pitching wedge from 114 yards. John Yimoyines witnessed this one too, along with Wes Martin and Jeff Marshall. Congratulations Mr. Krafft on this special shot!

Congratulations to Avila member and LPGA tour professional Brittany Altomare on her runner-up finish in the Evian Championship in Evian-les-Bains, France on September 17th. Brittany was in a playoff for the last major event
of LPGA season. Her 2nd place finish is a career-best in only her third year on tour. Two weeks prior, Brittany tied for third in the LPGA Cambia Portland Classic in Oregon. She has secured a berth in the season-ending CME Group Tour championship Nov. 16-19 in Naples, Florida, and she’ll be fully exempt for all of 2018, including the five majors. Great playing by the former All-American out of the University of Virginia, and all of Avila wishes you continued success.
