    ISSUE #1

    FEBRUARY 1, 201

    Principals Message

A Kind, Caring Community of Kids!

As you know, BE KIND is one of three parts of our Bobcat Code (Be Kind. Be Safe. Be YourBest.). We teach students about kindness at Ventana Vista explicitly throughout the year, andon a day-to-day basis when teachable moments present themselves.

Recently, a school-wide assembly reinforced the message of kindness at our school.Students watched a video about the power of random acts of kindness; they enjoyed a skit puton by staff members with a lesson about giving of oneself; and they heard about our StudentCouncils work with the Bens Bells project (see www.bensbells.org for more information).Every staff member was given some kindness coin necklaces to pass on to students whodemonstrate kind acts. Students are then to be on the lookout for others to pass theirnecklaces onto.

Some specific acts of kindness toward our greater Tucson community to note:

Just before the holidays, our third grade team held a Read-a-Thon. They raised atotal of $1,839.40! The project related to their study of social studies, as well, and thestudents chose to split their proceeds to benefit two local organizations. Theydonated $886.60 to the Community Food Bank and $952.80 to Make Way forBooks. Way to go 3rd grade!

Students in Srta. Acuas kindergarten classes have also recently participated inprojects to benefit our greater community. They collected over 300 toys, books, andDVDs for Casa de los Nios and the Diamond Children's Hospital at UMC inDecember. In January they collected 250 pounds of food for the Community FoodBank. The food collection project related to their study of mathematics. As itemswere brought in, they put the cans in groups of 10, counting their way to 100 (andbeyond!).

Coming up later this monthVentana Vista students will show their kindness toward ourschool. On the afternoon of Tuesday, February, 19 (NOT an early release day), the entireschool will participate in one or more service projects around the school: cleaningclassrooms, picking up trash, shelving books, making signs, etc. We love our school, and allshare the responsibility for taking care of it!

Thank you for all that you do at home to encourage your children to demonstrate kindness atschool, and throughout their lives!

    Tucson Festival of Books

We LOVE reading (and will have fun with it during a week-long celebration in March)! The
