I have a habit of consis-tently thinking about the future: what’s going on tomorrow, or next week or where I want to be in a year. I have an overall lack of feeling present. From things as simple as the pace at which I eat to the pace at which I walk I feel that things are constantly moving. I wanted to make a change that would shift my pace. I decided that my trip to Italy was as good a time as any to begin this new chapter, especially since I would be completely removed from my every day life.

I found that letting go of that neurosis and regimented mindframe is not nearly as easy as it seems. From the water to the behavior and manner-isms of the natives, Venice is incredibly fluid and easy

going in every sense of the word. Directions given by the natives are far more general and loosely defined. Coming from a place where everything is structured, scheduled and specific, having someone tell me that where I need to go is “just down that way” left me with little (if any!) information about my journey. A few examples like this made my first few days a little difficult.

Undoubtedly, my lack of feel-ing present is not solely due to the fact that I live in New York. However, I decided to explore this Venetian theme of a free flowing feeling that is reflected in many aspects of this city.

I felt the following greatly compliments this calm energy of the city, while imposing a highly positive message:

In a superficial sense, one can see by this map of Venice that it has a natural flow in its layout and the water that runs throughout. Unlike most cities, Venice possesses these veins that keep a steady, but refreshing flow of water, energy and richness.

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

flow \’flo\ verb. to proceed smoothly and readily

Flow is also the best word that can be used to describe the the vibe of Venice. As a visitor with eyes wide open, there is so much in the Venetian culture that reflects this fluidity from signage, type and decorative elements on windows to plants and even the fact that the island is surrounded by water that flows constantly and calmly.

Non posso cambiare direzione del vento, ma posso aggiustare le vele...

My trip to Venice will definitely be one that I will not forget, and I will return at some point in the future. I plan to continue work-ing on feeling more present and letting go of the regimented piece of myself. I felt that this quote was the perfect middle ground for where I am and where I’m work-ing to be in the future.
