CONFERRAL OF THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION Veni Sancte Spiritus – Sequence for Pentecost Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine! Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine. You, of comforters the best; You, the soul’s most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe. O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill! Where you are not, we have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill. Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend; Give them virtue’s sure reward; Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end. Amen.

St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church – O’Fallon, IL

Monday, August 3rd, 2020 – 7:00pmCover Art: “Pentecost” by John August Swanson (2013) Artist Statement: The scene is of the Holy Spirit descending upon the people, as mighty winds and tongues of fire, enabling them to speak to all of the wonders of God. In my image of Pentecost, I see the Spirit of God, re-energizing all people and bringing us together to work for peace, to heal the Earth, and to honor the diversity of our life’s journey.

What are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?“Baptism, the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the sacraments of Christian Initiation whose unity must be safeguarded.” (paragraph #1285, The Catechism of the Catholic Church) In today’s celebration of the Eucharist, during which our young people will be confirmed by the bishop, everyone in our church should be praying that they will be filled with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts include not only an increase in faith, hope and love, a greater commitment to Jesus Christ and His Church and the discernment of the life and vocation to which God is calling them, but also the gifts prayed for by the bishop in the prayer just before the Confirmation takes place. These spiritual gifts are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and the fear of the Lord.

What are the Fruits of the Holy Spirit? The Catechism of the Catholic Church lists the Fruits of the Holy Spirit in paragraph #736 as “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faith-fulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal. 5:22b-23a). The actions of our lives should reflect these fruits.

St. Clare Parish announces the establishment of the Tyrone Sanford Memorial Scholarship for Catholic high school education. To honor the memory of her late brother, former St. Clare Parish School of Religion Confirmation catechist Simone Wheeler has funded this one-year, $500 scholarship for a student who will attend a Catholic high school in the year after his or her Confirmation. Mr. Sanford died of cancer at age 37. He was an amazing man and a gentle spirit, who loved the elderly and children of all ages. He was valued education and helping others. He became Catholic as an adult and thrived

on learning about his faith. The scholarship will be awarded for the fall semester to a student who best meets the application requirements. The determination of the award will be based on applications from the students and their efforts in preparing for Confirmation. The amount awarded will be sent directly to the student’s school to be used for his/her tuition or books.

Scholarship requirements: •St. Clare parishioner •Completed all St. Clare Parish requirements for Confirmation •Will be confirmed this year •Will attend a Catholic high school in the coming school year •Must complete application

1 Corinthians 12:4-13Reading Brothers and Sisters: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit;there are different forms of service but the same Lord;there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit;to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit;to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Psalm 104

1. Bless the Lord, o my soul! O Lord my God, how great you are, clothed in majesty and honor, wrapped in light as with a robe!

2. How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you have made them all The earth is full of your creatures. Bless the Lord, o my soul.

3. All of these look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it, they gather it up; you open wide your hand, they are well filled.

4. You take away their breath, they die, returning to the dust from which they came. You send forth your spirit, and they are created. and you renew the face of the earth.

Gospel Acclamation

8 13

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithfuland kindle in them the fire of your love.

On the last and greatest day of the feast,Jesus stood up and exclaimed,“Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. As Scripture says:Rivers of living water will flow from within him who believes in me.”

He said this in reference to the Spiritthat those who came to believe in him were to receive. There was, of course, no Spirit yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

Homily Fr. Jim Deiters

Renewal of Baptismal Promises

Do you renounce Satan and all his works and empty promises? Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth?

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered death and was buried, rose again from the dead, and is seated at the right hand of the Father?

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who today through the Sacrament of Confirmation is given to you in a special way just as he was given to the Apostles on the day of Pentecost?

Do you believe in the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?

This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Assembly: Amen.
