Developing a concept for building facades is an essential part of planning. The important aspect is the combination of high aesthetic requirements with demands on energy efficiency, thermal insulation and comfort. WAREMA sun shading products offer enormous flexibility. We offer extensive services for architects and specialist planners, enabling them to select the best sun shading systems for their projects.

Increasingly complex facade structures and buildings raise the demands on architects and planners and last but not least the sun shading products. The WAREMA sun shading planner will help you to plan your sun shading system quickly and reliably. Short descriptions and application examples help you with choosing your system. The included CAD library offers the option of independently generating sections and views and to tailor them to structural conditions, with dimensions and ready for integration into your planning.

The matching bidding texts for the generated solution can also be found in the sun shading planner. The integrated control planner supports you with system selection, including diagrams for line routing and connection plans for the control components. The sun shading planner can be found at: www.sonnenschutzplaner.de

We also help you with energy optimisation, provide advice for planning commercial projects and residential houses and determine all relevant values for thermal protection certificates. We organise and coordinate measuring for test certificates in cooperation with recognised institutes.

Unattractive and boring purpose-built buildings are a thing of the past – floor to ceiling glazed facades and special shapes have become a staple of modern architecture. The desire for individual style within our own four walls is constantly growing. This new diversity also demands a similar diversity of sun shading systems. WAREMA offers a perfect, individual solution for every architectural style – for inside and outside.

WAREMA venetian blinds meet the highest requirements for use in coupled systems and also any demands on sun shading systems. They are resistant to heat and corro-sion and can withstand high levels of humidity. The venetian blinds provide anti-glare and heat protection, visual privacy as well as view out and thanks to their protected loca-tion they can be used irrespective of wind loads. The slats which are threaded through the webs prevent unwanted adjustment of the slats, creating a homogeneous curtain appearance.

Technical informationEnergy efficiency in buildings

Complying with legal requirements for improving energy efficiency requires good knowledge of the relevant regulations – but also suitable materials, a high level of competence and efficient concepts. WAREMA supplies the suitable products as part of efficient sun shading concepts.

History of energy saving regulations (EnEV)

2002 – The energy saving regulation (EnEV2002) first issued in 2002 replaced the then valid thermal insulation regulation and the heating systems regulation and combined the two. This made it possible to have a combined evaluation of the building shell and the systems.

 2004 – First amendment (EnEV 2004)

2007 – The EnEV 2007 first brought about extensive changes. Since then non-residential buildings require a calculation according to DIN V 18599 stipulating the evaluation of cooling systems and lighting in addition to building exterior, heating and ventilation system. Energy passes which are mandatory for all buildings provide a statement about the energy requirement for heating, hot water, ventilation and cooling, allowing an easy comparison between the energy efficiency of different buildings.

2009 – The EnEV 2009 brought about extensive changes. Compared to the EnEV 2007 insulation of the building exterior has to be 15 % better on average and the permissible energy consumption of a building was lowered by 30 %.

Future – Further tightening is planned for the years 2012 and 2015.

Efficiency factor – building shell With an optimised building exterior the energy exchange between outside and inside through walls, roof and floors is almost eliminated. This turns the glazing into the “energy windows” for the building:

in summer it can be used to control heat input

in winter it can optimise solar gain and reduce lossesIn this way well-planned sun shading systems always provide a reduction of energy consumption and also ensure a good and comfortable room climate.

Detailed information about EnEv 2009, check lists and requirements can be found on the internet at: www.enev-online.org

Degree of automation

Influencing the total energy balance When current standards and regulations for public or commercially used non-residential buildings are followed, building automation becomes an important part of integral planning.

The details are governed, amongst others, by EN 15232 “Energy performance of buildings” for Europe, by DIN V 18599 “Energy evaluation of buildings” or EnEV 2009, which came into force in October 2009, for Germany.

The structure of such automation in order to categorise the building into the respective energy efficiency classes is governed by the VDI guideline 3813 part 2.

EN 15232 differentiates between four building energy efficiency classes: D (no automation, no longer permissible), C (minimum), B (good), A (optimum)

The draft for the VDI guideline 3813 part 2 defines the required degree of automation (in relation to the sun shading) for each class. The following requirements are stipulated for each class:

Class C: simple automatic sun control sufficient for controlling the sun shading system

Classes B and A: automatically controlled, switched or dimmed daylight supplementary lighting, slat tracking, shading correction as well as automatic thermal control are required

For architects and planners these regulations represent an important principle for the future: They generally will have to include sun shading systems in the building plans.

WAREMA as a sun shading specialist contributes ideal concepts already during the planning and project development phase.

For WAREMA innovative sun shading stands for intelligent overall concepts and not just for perfect heat protection and intelligent daylight guiding.

Control and drive technology are logical complements to the range.

Technical informationBuilding physics basics

Effective thermal insulation is a must today. A highly insulated outer facade, which protects from heat loss in winter, will also keep the heat coming in through the glazing in summer. This can quickly lead to overheated rooms.

For sophisticated architecture, the facade is without doubt the defining design element. Due to strong wind influence, external sun shading systems are often not desired or technically possible. One energy efficient possibility is the use of WAREMA venetian blinds for coupled systems.

Energy transmittanceInfluence of glazingDIN EN 13363 “Sun shading installation in combination with glazing – calculating solar radiation and light transmittance” describes a more exact procedure for the calculation.

Depending on the glazing, which in the calculation is defined with the heat transmission coefficient of the glazing (Ug in [W/m²K]) and the energy transmittance (g value), exact calculation of the total energy transmittance (gtot) can be carried out using this procedure. Afterwards the shading factor Fc of the sun shading system in combination with the glazing is determined: FC = gtot/g

For reasons of energy saving, sun shading glazing should be used in combination with an internal sun shading system, a double skin facade or coupled or casement windows can be used as an alternative. This can ensure protection against summer heat with the correct internal textile sun shading system or an efficient venetian blind.

Mirror-finish slats In modern buildings the energy demand for artificial lighting is becoming an increasingly important factor in the total energy balance. Light guiding systems can reduce the energy requirements for artificial lighting. In combination with a highly reflective white ceiling even the back of the rooms can be supplied with sufficient daylight. This creates a comfortable room climate and increases efficiency in the workplace by providing a high level of daylight.

The values refer to a combination with double glazing with Ug = 1.1 W/m²K and g = 0.37

Shading factorsThrough being adjustable, venetian blinds comply with allrequirements regarding view out, visual privacy and glare control that the user could have for a sun shading system. As with textiles, protection against summer heat depends on the reflectance.

The following diagrams apply to a first assessment when closed (best value) and for slats at a 45° setting (recommended by DIN V 18599), depending on the possible reflectances.

The values refer to a combination with double glazing with Ug = 1.1 W/m²K and g = 0.27

The values refer to a combination with triple glazing with Ug = 0.8 W/m²K and g = 0.38
