3) Single PtP fiber with WDM

Basic BBU Centralization Transport Options

This CPRI transport configuration is already supported but …

• … fiber is not widely available on cell sites

• … even when available, fiber is usually a scarce and costly resource and this usage is not efficient

• in an ideal scenario, a cell site should not use more than 1 optical fiber (2 for resiliency)

• … it does not scale up easily when the site configuration must be increased

• fibers must be added when new RRH are added

• high number of Long reach SFP heads increase the CAPEX

• … this is not a carrier-grade solution

• no management of the optical NW: optical NW failures hard to detect, troubleshoot and fix

This configuration is defined in CPRI standard and reduces the number of fibers used but …

• … it would introduces a single point of failure on the cell site and wireless equipment have a lower reliability than transport equipment

• … it would not be adapted to large site configurations

• the highest CPRI rate currently defined in the standard is 9 830 Mbps, and the bandwidth required for large site configurations exceeds this value (e.g, 3 sectors LTE 20 MHz MIMO 4x4 would require 2 CPRI Rate 7)

• … this is not a carrier-grade solution either

Passive solution with reduced number of fibers used, but…

• … requires many expensive long-haul colored interfaces (SFPsI in BBU and RRH making it an expensive solution for sites with many CPRI interfaces

• … it is difficult to manage operationally as each RRH must use the correct colored transceiver with a matching colored interface at the BBU Pool end

• … it is also not a carrier grade solution

9721 lightRadio™ Fronthaul Optimiser (LFO)

What is the problem we are trying to solve ?

1) Enable BBU Centralization in every possible

fiber circumstance

2) In a cost effective way to optimize TCO gains

3) Introducing Manageability of the Optical Network

How ?

1) By the ability to connect any Optical access Network

2) By compressing and multiplexing electrically CPRIs to

save optical NW cost

3) Using ITU-T G.709 standard in the optical network

What is LFO ?

1) LFO is an ALU Wireless-aware Transmission-access module

ALU Wireless-aware allows optimization of the CPRI links, Transmission-access allows to optimize the way we access

any fibers

LFO: Saves fibers, saves lambdas, interworks with any Optical network bringing manageability to this new interface (network supervision and automatic recovery from failures)

CP4 functions Control of base RNC 9370 functions such

as loading, fault detection and sparing Disk management

a software-based journaling system (the shadow file system or SFS) is used to replicate file writes to the spare CP4 disk drive.

Ethernet access to MDM/MDP via TCP/IP for Out of band OAM connectivity

In-Band OAM management will also be provided. IP flow containing OAM signalling will be sent to the OMC-R on top of AAL5 ATM on the same STM1 that is used to carry Iu protocol. This type of OMC connectivity is handled by the 16ptOC3/STM1 board.

IP routing function for OMC-B/Node Bs links

Security: Radius and IP-Sec for OAM paths

ALCATEL-LUCENT 9370 RNC

ENHANCED DUAL CORE PACKET SERVER (EDCPS)

• FEATURE DESCRIPTION

• 9370 RNC capacity growth with DCPS has reached its limit. 3G data traffic continues to grow exponentially year over year.

• Enhanced Dual Core Packet Server (eDCPS) is introduced as an alternative to the existing DCPS to enable future capacity growth of the RNC compared to the 9370 with DCPS.

• By default, the eDCPS will provide the same capacity as DCPS. The capacity increase will be available through software upgrade

• DCPS and eDCPS simultaneous support in the same RNC at iso-capacity.

• FEATURE VALUE

• RNC increase capacity through software without additional HW need

• CAPEX saving: Immediate investments in eDCPS at iso- capacity is less costly compared to adding DCPS and then replacing them witheDCPS when additional capacity is needed.

• Reduced footprint thanks to reduced nb of RNCs vs the RNC with DCPS.

• eDCPS allows for continuing capacity evolution in future software releases

Future proof 9370 capacity growth solution while protecting hardware

investment
