VELVET HILLS CHORUS
Competition Information Book

Dear Chorus, As we prepare for our first contest run together, I want to say "Thank you" to you all for making a home here in Velvet Hills, for me, and my family. The family feel of this chorus is what attracted me to this position in the first place, and you have continued to care for us, watch out for us, and love us. I do love to compete, and I do love to win. BUT... the biggest charge I get out of doing this every Monday night (and every day of my career) is watching the learning happen, and seeing the growth. We have done a great job of buying into the learning and growing, and that growth has been amazingly consistent over the past 16 months. Realize that this contest is just a stop along the journey of our growth as a chorus, as musicians, and as singers. I am being completely honest when I say I don't really care how we finish with our scores. What I do care about is: 1) our growth through this process, 2) the FUN that we have in the music we sing and the work we do, and 3) taking care of each other throughout this journey. I purposely choose music I like, and I know is fun to sing and perform. I don't really care about choosing songs that will "score well." Groups that do that have kind of lost the meaning in what we do, in my opinion. So, above all else, let's have some fun! Darin
GENERAL INFORMATION AND REMINDERS
Our Regional Convention and Competition will be held in Cheyenne, WY. Cheyenne is
approximately 170 miles north of Colorado Springs on I-25. Driving time is about 3 hours, but
remember that one of Colorado’s seasons is “Road Construction”, so there may be delays.
Velvet Hills will be staying and rehearsing at Little America Resort, 2800 W. Lincolnway. It is
northwest of the I-25 and I-80 interchange. Our Southern Star friends will be staying and
rehearsing at the Red Lion, 204 W. Fox Farm Rd.
The contest venue is the Cheyenne Civic Center, 510 W. 20th Street. There will be a shuttle bus
from each hotel to the Civic Center for competition events. At other times, you will need to
drive yourself. There is free parking near the Civic Center.
Driving directions from Little America to Cheyenne Civic Center: Leaving Little America, turn
left onto W. Lincolnway; after 2.1 miles, turn left onto O’Neill Avenue; Civic Center is on the
right.
Velvet Hills is known as a friendly, supportive chorus. Let’s maintain and enhance that image by
greeting everyone with a smile…especially our fellow competitors and service personnel. Lines
will be long at times, bring your patience as well!
Be a positive, encouraging audience member. Remember, the comment you just made may be
overheard by the mother/sister/cousin/best friend of the person you spoke about. If negative
must be vocalized, save them for the privacy of your room.

COMPETITION COSTUME:
• Multi-color Tunic
• Black Unitard o only those with Leotards must wear All-In-One
• Blue Earrings
• Black Capezio-style Character shoes o Hose not required o Optional to wear Nude color knee highs that can be scrunched down to
not show a “top line” in the leg. Or may wear pantyhose under unitard.
• Makeup as per instructed.
REHEARSALS, FRIDAY QUARTET CONTEST, SATURDAY CHORUS BREAKFAST: Wear UPSCALE CASUAL for Regional in Cheyenne to represent ourselves as the host chorus, Velvet Hills. Please follow these guidelines:
• Choose SOLID colors for Tops in Purple, Violet, Black or Gray.
• Choose SOLID colors for Bottoms (pants, skirts) in Black or Gray.
• Wear our “Velvet Hills” pins.
• Comfortable shoes.
• Avoid these: No Prints, Stripes or Patterns of any kind. No sleeveless tops. No jeans. No white pants. No shorts. No logo shirts.
SHOW OF CHAMPIONS/AFTERGLOW – SATURDAY NIGHT:
Theme is Western. Wear your Jeans, Boots, and your BLING!! Have fun!!
MAKEUP APPLICATION SUGGESTIONS 2019
1. Apply your own makeup primer, eye primer, and concealer to a clean face. INCLUDE primer on your lips.
• Suggestion: Smashbox primer- Maybelline: Instant Age Rewind Concealer- Mabelline or Smashbox eye primer 2. Apply 1 thick coat of Ben Nye Tone Matched Matte Base to face, ears. neck, and chest. Include the entire eye area and lips. Apply with a DRY skinny round or wedge sponge. Apply by patting on foundation in several areas and blending with your finger tips or the other side of your sponge. Make sure the foundation is applied EVENLY. 3. Apply EYEBROW PENCIL darker and a little thicker. Use black, dark-brown, or charcoal gray – the color closest to your hair color. EXTEND the brow line to the end of the eye.
• Suggestions: Maybelline or NYX brand eyebrow pencil (Walmart or Ulta) 4. Apply BLACK EYELINER (pencil or liquid) along the top edge of the eyelid. Begin application a little out from the corner of the eye and extend the line a little beyond the end of the eyelid.
• Suggestion: Maybelline eyeliner twist pencil 5. Apply BLACK EYELASHES with a Clear drying eyelash glue. Be sure the eyelashes are full and fit the width of your eye. They can be cut to fit your eyelid.
• Suggestions: Ardell, Adrianna, Salon Effects – your choice from Walmart, Ulta, Walgreens 6. Apply Covergirl 705 #1 the lightest shade (or Sephora lightest shade) under the eyebrow with a DRY sponge tip applicator. Apply generously. 7. Apply Covergirl 705 #2 the gold glittery shade (or Sephora medium gold shade) under the lighter shade -cover the rest of the eye area and eyelid. Use a separate DRY sponge tip applicator. Apply generously. 8. Apply Covergirl 705 #3 darker shade 3rd from the left (or Sephora darkest shade) along the brow bone (not in the crease but along the top of the brow bone). Begin at the center of the brow bone using the SIDE of a separate DRY sponge tip applicator and extend a LINE of shadow to the outer edge of the eye. Apply a LINE of shadow on the eyelid at the outer corner of the eye where the eyeliner is placed. Blend with your finger to soften the line of dark shadow. 9. Using the DRY sponge applicator used for the lightest eyeshadow color put a dot of the lightest eyeshadow color at the inside corner of each eye, a dot on the ball of each eye, and a dot above each eyebrow at the outer edge.
10. Apply 2 coats of BLACK MASCARA to your own and the false lashes by sweeping out, up, in to cover all sides of the lashes.
• Suggestions: Maybelline “Falsies” or Maybelline Great Lash “Lots of Lashes” – the one with the Heart on it. 11. Apply Ben Nye DESERT CORAL BLUSH with a brush sweeping from the top of your cheek bone (ball of the cheek) in a line to the top of your ear. BLEND with your fingers. NO CLOWN CHEEKS 12. Apply lip primer (you can use eye primer) and foundation to your lips. Next, apply Ben Nye Currant Lip Liner to outline your lips. THEN FILL IN THE LIPS WITH THE CURRANT LINER. 13. Apply the 1st COAT OF Ben Nye True Red Lipstick– blot– apply 2nd coat of lipstick- DO NOT BLOT. To avoid lipstick on the top teeth, insert pointer finger into mouth and slide the finger out again, Suggested stores to Shop: Walgreens, Ulta, Target, Walmart Cin.c

8. Eye Shadow{3 Dark shade 3d from the left. Apply a LINE from the top of the brow bone
to the outer edge ofthe eye.
