THE ORIGINAL VELAN STEAM TRAP
Steamtrap 2
THE ORIGINAL VELAN STEAM TRAPVelan is pleased to announce that we have reacquiredthe Velan universal steam trap line produced for 15years by Plenty Steam Products. This comprehensiverange of steam traps is based on a unique design thatwas developed and patented by A.K. Velan, Presidentand CEO of Velan Inc., and is now copied by majorsteam trap manufacturers. Once again, you can trustVelan to supply high quality steam traps for virtuallyall of your condensate drainage applications.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

WHAT IS BIMETAL?• Bimetal is a composite metal
comprising two or more metalliclayers with different coefficients ofexpansion, which changes curvaturewhen subjected to heat.
• Velan Steam Traps use abimetal of high tensilestrength, stable at hightemperature with deflectionlimited to 600°F (315°C) toprevent over-stressing onsuper-heated steam service.

UNIVERSAL STEAMTRAP PRINCIPLEChart 2 illustrates the bimetalclosing force developed atsaturated temperature inrelation to the line pressuretending to open the valve. The gradual increase in force, following the steam curve, is a function of the patentedsegmentation principle of the element. The delicatebalance of opening andclosing forces exists in allpressure ranges such as 0-200, 0-350, 0-600, 0-1500, 500-2500 psi (0-14, 0-21, 0-41, 0-103, 35-172 bar), and produces completeuniversal operationthroughout the pressurerange without adjustment or orifice change.

FLOAT BIMETALLIC PRINCIPLEChart 3 illustrates theoperation of the combinationof a bimetal and float elementutilized in the float/bimetallicseries. In this principle, thebimetal is used to close thevalve at saturated temper-ature or release cool air in thesystem. However a smallaccumulation of condensate in the trap body lifts the float and opens the dischargevalve. No temperaturedepression is required for thisprocess and, as a result, thecharacteristic is identical tothe saturated steam curve. The steam trap shuts off in the presence of steam andopens at once in the presenceof condensate even atsaturated steam temperature.

ENERGY (STEAM) INPUT Using Velan Bimetallic Traps
When using Velan Bimetallic Steam Traps the dischargetemperature of condensate is adjusted by a temper-ature controller and most of the sensible heat in thecondensate is saved. Condensate is discharged at 180°F(82°C). 231.5 (129)* [381.5-150 (212-83)*] are availableto re-evaporate part of lodged condensate 820 (456)*required per lb (kg). 231.5 (129)* will evaporate 29%into live steam. Heat is transferred to the oil efficientlyand the heating process with high pressure condensateapproaches heating with live steam.

ENERGY (STEAM) INPUT Using Conventional Bucket, Float, Thermodynamic & Bellows Traps
Condensate is discharged as soon as it forms. The latent heat is extracted which, in our example, is 820 (456)* per pound of condensate. Most of the sensible heat contained in the condensate 381.5 (212)* or 32% is wasted.
