TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK By M. A. SADANAND
NO HOLDS BARRED
There are no stops1945, when my family (minus father who was in Kenya
earning his then substantial salary for the British Empirethat dotted the world) and the atom bomb was a playthingthat could, with one misstep, write the word “FINIS” to theancient history of the world, took the bold decision that ourfuture lay in the arrack-smelling Triplicane and not inKannur, my Amma rented out our palatial house in thatKerala town and we landed in Triplicane as guests of a friendKurup.
Until we moved to less-liquor-smelling Royapettah, theinterregnum was a tearful one for Amma, utterly inconse-quential to the four of us whose life Amma wanted to lift overthe road level to a level she had got used to in Nairobi (whenall of us were together before Hitler twirled his scrappymush because he had bigger toys. He was a mad leader withdestructive weapons with which he wanted to rule theworld!)
But then, everybody looked the same and even our ownNetaji had his own desire for an Indian tryst with destinyand dared to start the Indian National Army with a few toyexplosives. The last we heard of him was as a mysteriouscharacter but never a confirmed genuine leader who livedto lead. As lawyers would say, he is presumed to be deadunless he comes out of his cave and announces to JusticeP.N. Prakash, “My Lord, here I am in flesh and blood, as goodas Sadanand’s”.
But Netajis don’t die. They are like God, very much there, but you can’t see them. That is their strength. Netaji mayyet be around, looking for a predictor who will advise himwhen to move to convince people that he had more livesthan one. That will keep you going until you run into a truechap like Sadanand. Then you have to believe that goodnessis endless and there are no stops.
TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC 17M. T. Rajen, a successful Madras city electrical contractor,
promoted Vel Pictures with his pals C. P. Sarathy and P. V. Das,a businessman from Andhra and film exhibitor.
Rajen had interest in cinema and ran a distribution companyand also offered electrical maintenance services to cinemas inthe city and elsewhere. The talented trio, Muthuswami Iyer, K.Ramnoth and A. K. Sekhar, joined them and a joint stockcompany, limited by shares, was promoted. Interestingly Iyermet with S. S. Vasan, then a prosperous magazine publisher, successful horse racing man and owner of an active mail orderbusiness, and tried to persuade him to take up shares in the newfilm company. In what could be called the understatement ofthe decade, Vasan told Iyer, “Why should I dabble in films? Idon’t need it!”. As Iyer recalled to this writer decades later, thefuture Indian movie mogul and the Gemini Studio boss wishedto have nothing to do with pictures! Strange are the quirks ofDame Destiny…
Vel Pictures had its own studio, which was then situated onEldams Road, Madras in the sprawling bungalow of the Maha-raja of Pithapuram. That area was then sparsely populatedand well wooded with hardly any traffic. Indeed at the back ofthe studio there were open lots and also a pond where much ofthe outdoor shooting was done.
Dandapani Desikar played the role of the saint Pattinatharin the movie, and the other artistes in the cast were M.Harihara Bhagavathar, ‘Master’ V.N. Sundaram. (Later anoted playback singer and also actor), P. G. Venkatesan (a finesinger known as the Saigal of South India), T. R. Muthulakshmi, and Radhabai. Most of them were drawn from Tamil theaterand faded after one or two films.
The film was directed by Rajen assisted by Ramnoth whohandled the camera, Iyer and also Sekhar. The movie was amusical and had the original compositions of the saint himself. Some other songs were written and composed by PapanasamSivan.
‘Pattinathar’ (1935) was a major success and establishedDesikar as an excellent singer-actor on the ladder of success. The impact of the film was so great that many young men andalso married ones gave up active life and donned saffron robes!
(However there was considerable criticism about the castingof the singing star as the saint. Desikar looked too well fed andeven paunchy to portray the thin ascetic Pattinathar. Someof his close friends began to call him ‘ Pattina dhadiyan!’(‘Dhadiyan’ in Tamil means a fat fellow!)
After this initial success Desikar began to attract the atten-tion of Tamil film producers. They planned to make films basedon the lives of religious persons and saintly beings in whichthere would be ample scope for the singing talents of Desikarto be exploited successfully and profitably.
His next film was again a musical, ‘Vallala Maharaja’ (1938).This film brought about an important event in his personal life.Along with a role in the movie, he also acquired a lifetimecompanion, ‘unwedded wife’, as a personal friend commented! The heroine of this film was M. S. Devasena, a modestlysuccessful actress of 1930s. She hailed from the traditionalDevadasi community and her original name was Krishnammal, which was changed to Devasena when she began to act inmovies. She attracted attention when she played the heroinewith M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar in his successful film of1936 ‘Sathya Seelan’. She was not the conventional movie landchocolate and cheesecake beauty but she had good featuresand a bountiful figure.
After the 1938 film, she acted only with Desikar and livedwith him as his second wife.
During the 1930’s, Dhandapani Desikar played the lead rolesin two more religious folk myth movies, ‘Thayumaanavar’(1938)and ‘Manickavaasagar” (1939).
Then came his most successful and popular movie that isremembered to this day. That was the Gemini Studios - S. S.Vasan production ‘Nandanar’ (1942). (To be continued)

Garbage abounds in Ranganathan StreetSir, Thousands of shoppers make a beeline daily for the commercial
complexes/shops that dot Ranganathan Street, T. Nagar. They seemto be unmindful of the filth and garbage that lie scattered all over andthe poor sanitary conditions of the street.
None of the shop/complex owners or the eateries bother to maintainthe street and, instead, dirty the surroundings by dumping their dailygarbage on the street. Even the shoppers are party to creating thisunhygienic atmosphere by throwing plastic and other food waste onthe street. The Corporation workers have a Herculean task to dailyclean up the street at the end of the day.
A bit more of civic sense will go a long way in keeping one of thebusiest streets in the city tidy. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street,T. Nagar
Vacant Corporation land misusedSir, There is a vacant piece of land belonging to Chennai Corporation
on 61st Street in 10th Sector, K. K. Nagar which is being misused byanti-social elements for nefarious activities during night. There is nofence or security to protect the land. Damaged play equipment is lyingin one end of the plot.
I appeal to the authorities concerned to repair the play equipmentand also convert the vacant land into a small park or playground. Theauthorities should also ensure that the land is not misused fornefarious activities causing nuisance to nearby residents. Theyshould also erect a fence with gate or employ a watchman to protectit from encroachment. M. Munuswamy, AP777, 89th Street, 10th
Sector, K. K. Nagar
Enjoy an outing on Chetpet LakeSir, Marina and Adyar beaches have remained the most popular
places for Chennaites to spend a cool evening with family and friends. Now, Chetpet Lake has joined the list.
The sprawling lake of over 16 acres is now brimming with water andprovides a visual feast with boat rides around a natural island. Locatedin the heart of the city, visitors can, in addition to boat rides, enjoyfishing in dedicated angling spots or go for a leisurely stroll on the well-laid footpath along the bank.
The water body abounds in a variety of fish, including rohu, cutla, mrigal and pangasius. To promote bio-diversity, Chennai Corporationhas planted hundreds of rare saplings around the lake, which areexpected to attract a number of bird species. The facility also has apollination park and a 1.5 km.-long walking track.
Facility to monitor the water quality of the lake has been commis-sioned. The sprawling parking lot can accommodate 60 cars and 100motorcycles at a time.
It is a good place to relax and enjoy a day. C. K. Subramaniam, J1595, Anukul Apartments, Anna Nagar, Ph: 98203 59436
