VEKOMA LEAVES NOTHINGTO CHANCE IN
RUNHAPPY MET MILE
Vekoma | Sarah Andrew
by Alan Carasso
Given a positive ride by Javier Castellano, R A Hill Stable and Gatsas Stable=s Vekoma (Candy Ride {Arg}) dared them to catch him in Saturday=s GI Runhappy Metropolitan H. at Belmont,
and catch him they could not, as the well-bred chestnut made every yard of the running to best perfect-trip Network Effect
(Mark Valeski) by 1 1/4 lengths. Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}) was forced to cover ground on the turn, but plugged on gamely to be third, while favored >TDN Rising Star= McKinzie
(Street Sense) had little stretch response and could do no
better than fifth.
The second betting choice by roughly $15,000, Vekoma was kicked straight into a clear advantage and galloped along comfortably enough a bit off the inside through an opening quarter in :22.73 over a drying-out Belmont main track that
was yielding fast times all afternoon. The outposted Warrior=s Charge (Warrior=s Reward) prompted from second, while McKinzie--who endured a luckless trip when runner-up to
Mitole (Eskendereya) in this 12 months back--was kept in the
clear and out of harm=s way by Mike Smith from close up in
fourth.

BROWN EQUALS RECORD IN MANHATTANby Alan Carasso
On an afternoon when Joey Chestnut was devouring a record-
setting 75 hot dogs not far away at Coney Island, trainer Chad
Brown was making some history of his own at Belmont Park.
OXO Equine LLC=s Instilled Regard (Arch) came with a sudden
burst of late energy to pip stablemate Rockemperor (Ire) (Holy
Roman Emperor {Ire}) in Saturday=s GI Manhattan S., giving the
conditioner his record-equaling sixth victory in the 10-furlong
grass feature, all since Desert Blanc (GB) (Desert Style {Ire})
provided him with his first in 2012. It was the second time in
that stretch that Brown had accounted for the exacta and came
one year after Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar (Giant=s
Causeway) led home a top-three sweep. "It's a testament to my
team," Brown said after the race. "Through the years a lot of
different horses have passed through our hands but much of my
same team is intact and they've been working with all these
horses. All the credit goes to them." Cont. p5

Vekoma, who romped to a 7 1/4-length defeat of Network
Effect in the GI Runhappy Carter H. June 6, was nursed along
into the turn after a half that was posted in a very manageable
:45.87, but they were beginning to close ranks. Endorsed
(Medaglia d=Oro), second to Code of Honor in the
GIII Westchester S. June 6, attacked three wide, McKinzie four
deep and Code of Honor was waited with on the back of the
latter nearing the stretch. Shaken up off the home corner,
Vekoma fended off Warrior=s Charge at the furlong grounds, dug
in doggedly and held sway, as Network Effect parlayed his
golden trip into a runner-up effort. Code of Honor ran with
credit to be third, while traveling 29 feet (about three lengths)
more than the winner, per Trakus data.
"I was happy with our trip around the backside,@ said trainer
George Weaver, winning his fourth career Grade I and second in
succession. AI knew we had natural speed, and no one really
went with us, so I was happy with the fact that he was there. At
the quarter pole, it seemed like all comers were coming and I
thought, 'Man, does he have anything left in the tank or not?'
When they got to the eighth pole and I saw him re-break and
keep going, I got excited. It was fun.@
Winner of the GIII Nashua S. at two going a one-tun mile,
Vekoma was the stalk-and-pounce winner of last year=s
GII Toyota Blue Grass S. and was shelved after a 13th--placed
12th--in the GI Kentucky Derby. The chestnut won the seven-
furlong Sir Shackleton S. at Gulfstream Mar. 28 ahead of his
tour-de-force in the Carter over that specialist trip last time.
Vekoma is the first to complete the Carter/Met double since
Wild Rush in 1998. Cont. p4

Pedigree Notes:
Vekoma is one of 16 top-level winners for his hugely successful
stallion and is one of two foals to race from his dam, who
defeated champion Informed Decision (Monarchos) in the
GI Humana Distaff H. in 2010. Vekoma=s now 6-year-old half-
sister Bloody Point (War Front) won half of her six career starts
and is the dam of a colt foal by Quality Road. His unraced 5-year-
old half-sister L=Age d=Or (Medaglia d=Oro) foaled a War Front
filly this year. Vekoma is Mona de Momma=s last listed produce.
Vekoma=s unplaced second dam was a half-sister to
GI Breeders= Cup Sprint runner-up Mr. Greeley (Gone West) and
to the stakes-winning Majestic Legend (His Majesty), whose
daughter Bedazzle (Dixieland Band) was responsible for
champion, GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile and GI Kentucky Derby-
winning >TDN Rising Star= Street Sense (Street Cry {Ire}). The
female family also includes MGISW >Rising Star= Paradise Woods
(Union Rags).

Instilled Regard | Sarah Andrew
Manhattan S. cont. from p1
Instilled Regard was the first to break the line from his low
draw, but Cross Border (English Channel) kicked on and showed
the way into the turn, with Channel Maker (English Channel)
lapped on his outside. Rockemperor was taken back to land in
the box seat from third, while Instilled Regard settled three back
on the rails. Cross Border lobbed along on an easy pace--the first
half-mile was posted in a methodical :50.46--but all riders were
happy enough with their position, with no significant change in
the plot entering the final three furlongs. The pacesetters still
had the race between them turning for home, but Rockemperor
peeled away from the inside into the three path and was able to
grind his way to the front with less than a sixteenth of a mile to
travel. Instilled Regard, who appeared hopelessly defeated in
upper stretch, found his second wind, split Rockemperor and
Sadler=s Joy in the dying strides and was shoved across the wire
first.
"They both got really good trips," said Brown. "Both jockeys
did a great job and both horses responded super. It's
unfortunate one of them had to lose. In the end, Instilled Regard
just made the last move of the chess match. I'm so proud of the
horse. He keeps getting better."
Third in the 2018 GI Hollywood Derby when making his first
turf start for the Brown barn, Instilled Regard broke through
with a half-length score in last December=s GIII Fort Lauderdale
S. at Gulfstream. A creditable third in the GI Pegasus World Cup
Turf Jan. 25, the dark bay was an even sixth as the favorite in
the GII Muniz Memorial S. at the Fair Grounds Mar. 21 and
bounced back with a neck defeat of an unlucky stablemate
Devamani (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the GII Fort Marcy S. June 6.
Pedigree Notes:
Instilled Regard was bought back on a bid of $110,000 out of
the 2016 Keeneland September Sale, but validated that decision
in spades when fetching the fourth-highest bid at the 2017 OBS
March Sale (:20 4/5). One of 42 group/graded and 13 Grade I
winners for his late sire--and one of five from Storm Cat-line
mares--he counts champion and eight-time Grade I winner
Heavenly Prize (Seeking the Gold) as his second dam. The latter
was responsible for the likes of Grade I winner Good Reward
(Storm Cat); the successful dual-hemisphere stallion Pure Prize
(Storm Cat); the stakes-winning Cosmic (El Prado {Ire}); the
stakes-placed Distinctively (Awesome Again), the dam of SW &
MGISP Faithfully (Smart Strike); and Just Reward (Deputy
Minister), dam of GISW Persistently (Smoke Glacken). Instilled
Regard=s third dam includes Heavenly Prize=s Grade I-winning
sister Oh What a Windfall and GISW Dancing Forever (Rahy).
Enhancing is the dam of the 3-year-old colt Grandexaltedruler
(American Pharoah) and a yearling filly by Medaglia d=Oro. She
most recently produced a Quality Road filly this past Mar. 18.
Instilled Regard is the fifth top-level scorer out of a daughter of
Forestry (Nyquist, Rushing Fall, Turbulent Descent, Bobby=s
Kitten).

A horse who has experienced his fair share of poor racing luck,
Juddmonte homebred Tacitus needed very little luck in
Saturday=s GII Suburban S., as he easily bossed six overmatched
and outclassed gallopers.
Tacitus was content to lie in fourth position early, just to the
inside of Moretti, as longshot Parsimony (Dominus) showed the
way from Mr. Buff (Friend or Foe). Given his cue fully a half-mile
from home, the son of >TDN Rising Star= Close Hatches made
ominous headway three furlongs out and was on even terms
without having been asked three wide at the top of the lane.
Allowed to stride into the lead three-sixteenths out, he cantered
under the wire a comprehensive winner.
Last year=s GII Wood Memorial S. hero and promoted to
complete an unlikely Bill Mott 1-3 in the GI Kentucky Derby,
Tacitus was runner-up to Sir Winston (Awesome Again) in the GI
Belmont S. A slow-starting second in the GII Jim Dandy S., the
gray played bridesmaid yet again behind Code of Honor (Noble
Mission {GB}) in the GI Runhappy Travers S. Third in the GI
Jockey Club Gold Cup over this track and trip last October, he
represented his Saudi-based owner with a fifth in the Feb. 29
Saudi Cup and was exiting a troubled fourth in the GII Oaklawn
H. May 2.

Grade I-winner Bellafina was the main attraction heading into
Saturday=s GII Great Lady M. S. at Los Alamitos, however, it was
Sneaking Out that proved best on the day, earning a 3/4-length
victory over the $1.5 million earner.
Content to track 6-1 chance Artistic Diva (Munnings), who
carved out an opening quarter in :21.63, the Jerry Hollendorfer
trainee maintained a narrow lead over her nearest pursuers
Amuse and the rail-hugging Bellafina, who was bet down to 1-2
favoritism following her May 17 GIII Desert Stormer S. score.
Fanned out four wide turning for home as Artistic Diva starting
to lose steam, Sneaking Out ground her way to the front at
midstretch while Bellafina was forced to circumnavigate the
tiring pacesetter. Despite inching closer to the leading Sneaking
Out late, the heavy favorite ran out of real-estate and had to
settle for second. Amuse outlasted Artistic Diva for third.

Completely friendless in the market while trying a distance of
ground for the first time, Project Whiskey sat a three-wide trip
and boxed on gamely in the final sixteenth of a mile, holding off
Dream Marie in Saturday=s GIII Delaware Oaks.
Trapped out as second favorite Piece of My Heart (Flat Out) set
a solid tempo up front, Project Whiskey was always traveling
comfortably beneath Frankie Pennington, but she was forced to
go a few strides earlier than she perhaps wanted when Dream
Marie forced the issue four deep at the five-sixteenths. Project
Whiskey struck to the front once heads were turned for home
and while Dream Marie looked to have all the momentum, she
couldn=t quite finish the job and Project Whiskey was edging
further clear at the wire.
Winner of a moderately rated Parx maiden at third asking last
September, Project Whiskey added the Parx Juvenile Fillies S.
Nov. 4 before disappointing in the Maryland Juvenile Fillies=
Championship Dec. 7. She had one run under her belt this term,
a distant sixth to Saturday=s GIII Victory Ride S. winner Frank=s
Rockette (Into Mischief) in Churchill allowance company
May 25.
Pedigree Notes:
The sixth graded winner for her Gainesway-based stallion,
Project Whiskey is out of a winning half-sister to GSW & GISP
Ready=s Image (More Than Ready) and is inbred 4x3 to A.P. Indy.
Over the Moon was most recently bred to Irish War Cry.

The flashy Uncle Chuck went from maiden winner to graded
winner as he ran away from just three foes as the heavy favorite
here. A seven-length romper going a flat mile at Santa Anita
June 12, the half-brother to brilliant debut winner and sire
Maclean=s Music (Distorted Humor) was bet down to 13-1 in last
week=s GI Kentucky Derby future pool and gave his backers
reason to feel good about their chances Saturday. With
stablemate and MGSW Thousand Words the main danger on
paper, the leggy dark bay chased the pace while kept very far off
the rail. Thousand Words sat even farther back and more off the
inside. Uncle Chuck made a quick move to challenge for the lead
around the bend, and while Thousand Words looked like he
might be going better heading into the long Los Al stretch, Uncle
Chuck found plenty more despite some lead issues to bound
away.
AHe broke great and I just left him alone,@ said rider Luis Saez,
who flew in from New York to take the mount. AHe was doing it
easy all the way. When I showed him the whip he took off. He=s
a very nice colt.==
While Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has lost two of his
sophomore stars this year on the elongated GI Kentucky Derby
trail, he has displayed the depth of his bench this week, first
with $3.65-million Cezanne (Curlin) going two-for-two on
Thursday followed by the exacta in the Los Alamitos Derby.
AThat was good,@ Baffert said. AAt the top of the lane, I thought
Thousand Words might get him, but at least he ran better.
We=re just learning more about Uncle Chuck. He=s still pretty
green, but he=s got gears. Luis was excited about him and I think
he=s one of the top riders in the country. He said [Uncle Chuck] is
still learning and he=s got a lot of improvement in him. He was
full of himself when he came back. It=s exciting. He=s learning
quickly and he has brilliance. I was impressed. I think we just
saw something pretty special and he=s been special from day
one. He=s bred to be any kind.==
Pedigree Notes:
An 8 1/2-length first-out scorer (105 Beyer Speed Figure)
herself, Uncle Chuck=s dam Forest Music is responsible for four
debut winners, including the fastest of all time in Steve
Asmussen trainee Maclean=s Music, who earned a 114 Beyer for
his lone appearance Mar. 19, 2011 at Santa Anita. Forest Music
was purchased privately by Stonestreet before taking the 2005
GII Honorable Miss H. at Saratoga. Despite her speed, Forest
Music has produced several horses who have seen out a route
of ground, including Stonestreet=s 2019 GIII Doubledogdare S.
winner Electric Forest (Curlin) and 2015 GII Los Alamitos Derby
third Kentuckian (Tiznow). Forest Music produced a Curlin colt in
2019 but was barren when bred back to that stallion for 2020.
Uncle Chuck is the 32nd graded winner for Uncle Mo but first
out of a mare by top broodmare sire Unbridled=s Song. GI Apple
Blossom H. winner Unbridled Mo is out of an Unbridled mare,
and GI Wood Memorial S. hero Outwork is out of a mare by
Unbridled=s son Empire Maker.

Well behind a slow pace and with time ticking away in
Saturday=s GIII Poker S., Social Paranoia was switched out widest
of all into the final eighth of a mile and whooshed home to post
what was ultimately a comfortable second graded-stakes
success.
Dream Friend (Ghostzapper) showed the most early initiative,
covering the opening couple of furlongs in a modest :24.50 as
Got Stormy (Get Stormy) was yet again forced out of her best
game to do the chasing from second. Favored Value Proposition
settled about midfield and in the clear, while Social Paranoia had
just Seismic Wave beaten entering the final half-mile. The latter
went for an early and overland run beneath Joel Rosario
entering the second turn, relegating Social Paranoia to last
between calls and they lined up four abreast at the quarter pole-
-Dream Friend, Got Stormy, Value Proposition and a rallying
Seismic Wave from the rail out. Jose Ortiz elected to keep Social
Paranoia in the slipstream of Seismic Wave into the lane, but he
took off when switched off heels passing the eighth pole and
sprinted the final quarter-mile in a race-fastest :22.79 for the
victory.
AI knew they were going slow but he was very relaxed,@ Ortiz
commented. AWhen we made our move, I had to go wide
because they were going so slow. I knew everyone was going to
have a really good run to the end but when I passed the eighth
pole, he was going really nice. He put his head down and rolled
home.
Runner-up in last year=s GI Belmont Derby going 10 furlongs,
Social Paranoia won the Dueling Grounds Derby over an
extended mile-and-a-quarter trip and added victorious graded
black-type in the GIII Appleton S. first off the layoff this past
March. Third to his stablemate Halladay (War Front) in the
May 9 Sunshine Forever S. at Gulfstream, he was exiting a
disappointing sixth in the GIII Fort Marcy S. June 6.
Pedigree Notes:
One of 39 stakes winners and 16 graded winners for his sire,
Social Paranoia is out of a half-sister to the good three-time
graded-winning turf horse Fantastic Fellow (Lear Fan). Third dam
Chateaucreek produced Henbit (Hawaii {Saf}), the 1980 G1
Epsom Derby winner and champion English 3-year-old. The
female family also includes Grade I winners Mr Purple (Deputy
Minister) and Queens Court Queen (Lyphard). Social Paranoia=s
2-year-old full-brother Brony Boss (Street Boss) has two minor
placings from three starts this season and Shutterbug is the dam
of a yearling full-brother to Social Paranoia. She was most
recently covered by Bernardini.

Gufo | Hoofprints
Kent S. cont.
Gufo kept his hot streak going with his first graded success in
the Kent S. Saturday at Delaware Park. Leaning right slightly out
of the gate, the chestnut was jostled around a bit, but got his
hooves beneath him and ran in second last early as Sunsation
(Bayern) loped along through moderate fractions. Closing the
gap a bit on the backstretch, Gufo swung out for a three-wide
bid at the top of the stretch and powered past his foes to secure
his fourth straight victory.
Third on debut at Aqueduct Nov. 17, Gufo broke his maiden
next out at Gulfstream Dec. 29 and followed suit with an
optional claimer victory there Mar. 27. He made it three in a row
last time with a late-rallying score in the English Channel S. in
Hallandale May 2.
Pedigree Notes:
Gufo is the 16th graded winner for Declaration of War and one
of 27 black-type winners for that stallion. He is a half-brother to
three-time graded victor Hogy. Their dam Floy=s most recent

>TDN Rising Star> Frank=s Rockette wasn=t given the easiest of
tasks in the early going of Saturday=s GIII Victory Ride S., but she
showed her grit and class late with a hard-fought head score
over the well-meant Reagan=s Edge.
Off a hair slow, the Bill Mott trainee raced out to take an early
advantage from her inside draw and was closely attended by
Reagan=s Edge, an allowance winner at Churchill in May, and
Center Aisle, a $1.5-million Fasig-Tipton Florida sale graduate
who scored first out at Gulfstream in March before finishing
fifth in a Churchill allowance May 22.
Pursued by those rivals through initial fractions of :23.11 and a
half in :45.52, Frank=s Rockette maintained a comfortable edge
turning for home, and while her two rivals gave it their best
shot, the 2-5 favorite held on to post the narrow victory over
Reagan=s Edge, with Center Aisle 3/4 of a length third. The final
time of 1:14.47 was 0.01 off the track record for 6 1/2 furlongs.
"When you looked at the race on paper, it looked like we'd be
the clear speed and probably be a length or two in front on the
backside," said trainer Bill Mott. "There was a horse hanging
right with her. She didn't break quite as sharp as I've seen her in
the past, but she was able to open up a bit when she turned for
home and had enough courage to hold them off. She had to
work at it a little bit. It was not an easy win."
Mott indicated the Aug. 8 GI Longines Test S. at Saratoga might
be next.

AThat's what I've had my eyes on," Mott said of the Test. AIt's a
big challenge. The Test is a great race. We've won it a couple of
times and it's a very important race for 3-year-old fillies. If she's
doing well, I'd like to give her a try in there.@
A runaway first-out winner at Churchill Downs last term,
Frank=s Rockette recorded a pair of runner-up finishes at
Saratoga behind Perfect Alibi (Sky Mesa) in the GII Adirondack S.
in August and the GI Spinaway S. the following month before
playing the bridesmaid once again, this time to Wicked Whisper
(Liam=s Map), in the GI Frizette S. in October. An easy front-
running seven-length winner in her sophomore debut in
Gulfstream=s Any Limit S. Feb. 22, she was second to Kimari
(Munnings) in Oaklawn=s Apr. 4 Purple Martin S. before
returning to the winner=s circle following a May 25 optional
claimer in Louisville.
Pedigree Notes:
With the win in the Victory Ride, Frank=s Rockette becomes the
30th graded stakes winner for Spendthrift marquee sire Into
Mischief. Rocket Twentyone, a $300,000 OBS March purchase
who evolved into the winner of the GIII Arlington-Washington
Lassie S., is also responsible for the stakes-placed duo of
Firewater Rocket (Macho Rocket) and Rocknroll Rocket (Curlin).
This represents the family of 2-year-old champion filly and
champion female sprinter Indian Blessing (Indian Charlie).
A half-sister to graded-placed Bear=s Conductor (Congaree),
the 11-year-old mare hasn=t produced a foal of record over the
past two seasons and was bred to American Pharoah earlier this
spring.
MONOMOY GIRL BREEZES TOWARDS
RUFFIAN Michael Dubb, Monomoy Stables, The Elkstone Group, and
Bethlehem Stables' Eclipse Award winner Monomoy Girl
(Tapizar) breezed a half-mile in company in an easy :49.30 over
the Belmont main track Saturday morning as she completed her
preparations for the July 11 GII Ruffian S. at Big Sandy.
Partnered with Javier Castellano, the 5-year-old worked in the
company of her multiple stakes-winning stablemate A Bit of
Both (Paynter) and was timed in splits of :12.30 and :24.40
before galloping out five-eighths of a mile in 1:02.10.
"Today it was a very straightforward work, a half-mile from the
half-mile pole with another horse inside. I was outside tracking
the other horse," said Castellano, who was subbing for regular
rider Florent Geroux.
"She handled the track well. Even at the beginning when we
started galloping, she was splashing nice and smooth in a good
rhythm, good balance and good mind. These good types of
horses, they do that."
Geroux retains the call for the Ruffian.
A $100,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase,
Monomoy Girl won the GI Breeders= Cup Distaff to cap her
championship season at three, her lone blemish coming when
she was disqualified to second behind Midnight Bisou (Midnight
Lute) in the GI Cotillion S. The chestnut missed her entire 4-year-
old season, owing to a bout with colic and later a hamstring
injury, but returned to action with a better-than-it-looked
2 3/4-length allowance victory going Churchill=s one-turn mile
May 16. Connections bypassed a clash with Midnight Bisou in
the GII Fleur de Lis S. last weekend in favor of the Ruffian.
The one-mile event, which carries purse money of $150,000, is
the final graded stakes on the abbreviated Belmont stakes
schedule. Monomoy Girl won the GI Acorn S. over the same
course and trip in 2018.

SHIVAREE TUNES UP FOR BLUE GRASS
Shivaree (Awesome of Course), who belied odds of 80-1 to
complete the exacta behind future GI Belmont S. hero Tiz the
Law (Constitution) in the GI Curlin Florida Derby Mar. 28,
worked five furlongs in 1:01.65 Saturday morning at Gulfstream
Park in advance of the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland
July 11.
A homebred for Fred Brei=s Jacks Or Better Farm, Shivaree
required five starts to break his maiden, but has since proved he
belongs in the 3-year-old discussion with a pair of stakes scores
prior to his Florida Derby effort. The Ralph Nicks trainee was a
latest third to Sole Volante (Karakontie {Jpn}) in a salty one-mile
allowance in Hallandale June 10.
AIt was a very good work--1:01 and change and 1:14 and
change in the gallop out,@ Nicks said. AI hope he reproduces his
Florida Derby race in the Blue Grass, then he=ll get a big piece of
it. If he doesn=t get it all, he=ll get a big piece of it.@
BLUE GRASS-BOUND PAIR FIRE KEENELAND
BULLETS Finnick the Fierce (Dialed In) and Man in the Can (Can the
Man) were the recipients of Saturday morning bullets at
Keeneland as each wrapped up their serious work ahead of next
Saturday=s GII Toyota Blue Grass S. in Lexington.
The one-eyed Finnick the Fierce drilled a half-mile in :46.20,
the fastest of 90 works at the distance Saturday morning. The
gelding, an adjudicated allowance winner at Oaklawn Apr. 4,
was a sound third to the now-retired Nadal (Blame) in the
GI Arkansas Derby May 2. He exits a third in Churchill allowance
company June 13 in which Blue Grass hopeful Art Collector
(Bernardini) was allowed to set a moderate pace and kicked
home much the best.
Arkansas-bred Man in the Can won the state-bred restricted
Rainbow S. Apr. 17 and the Arkansas Breeders= Championship S.
May 1 before besting next-out GIII Ohio Derby upsetter Dean
Martini (Cairo Prince) in a June 12 allowance beneath the Twin
Spires. The bay zipped five furlongs in :59.60 (1/18) Saturday in
Lexington.
AHe handled the track really well,@ trainer Ron Moquett said. AI
was really glad to see that. It should set him up well for the
race.@

SPEIGHTSTOWN SON OF PERFECT SHIRL
SUPER SHARP IN RISING STAR-WORTHY
UNVEILING Shirl=s Speight (Speightstown)=s dam Perfect Shirl (Perfect Soul
{Ire}) may have rallied from far back when she upended the
2011 GI Breeders= Cup F/M Turf at 27-1, but Shirl=s Speight
showed off impressive speed from the first jump Saturday at
Woodbine to garner the >TDN Rising Star= distinction. Sporting a
mostly unassuming worktab over the local Tapeta, the Chuck
Fipke homebred quickly assumed command and doled out splits
of :23.02 and :45.38 while traveling well within himself. Rafael
Hernandez still hadn=t moved a muscle on the 3-1 shot as they
spun for home, and he continued motionless all the way to the
wire as Shirl=s Speight powered away a head-turning eight-
length victor. Just Like Larry (Langhfuhr) was best of the rest.
Shirl=s Speight is his dam=s fourth foal, and has a year-older
full-brother who also won first out while showing speed on the
turf--that runner, Perfect Speighty, is now two-for-four. Perfect
Shirl, out of the GISW Lady Shirl (That=s Nice), is a half to MGISW
Shakespeare (Theatrical {Ire}), MGSW Lady Shakespeare
(Theatrical {Ire}) and SW/MGSP and useful producer Fantastic
Shirl (Fantastic Light). Perfect Shirl has a 2-year-old full-sister to
Shirl=s Speight named Speightstown Shirl who was posted two
works recently at Woodbine.

Facing fellow Ontario breds for the first time, the $600,000
Keeneland September yearling purchase settled in a stalking

paths wide turning for home, the 6-5 choice took over a

the Woodbine Tapeta.

The heavy chalk to win his second consecutive black-type
event, Double Crown broke alertly in Gulfstream=s Carry Back S.
and settled mid-pack in the tightly bunched field of just five.
Always in range, he collared the leaders coming off the turn with
rider Cristian Torres sitting chilly. The bay set sail for home and
never left the outcome in doubt in spite of the three-quarter
length margin at the wire. Closing With Verve was between
Double Crown and his stablemate, Ournationonparade, who like
the winner, carries the same silks of Reeves Thoroughbred
Racing.
The Carry Back winner debuted last September at Laurel under
Lacey Gaudet for then-owner Debbie Rhodes, besting
Ournationonparade, who also had different connections.
Privately purchased following that effort, Double Crown didn=t
start again until Apr. 26 finishing second in the slop at
Gulfstream. A subsequent win in the Roar S. at 6 1/2 panels May
16 in Hallendale over last year=s GII Saratoga Special S. winner
Green Light Go (Hard Spun) catapulted him into the Carry Back.
Two Columbus has had one reported foal since Double Crown,
a 2-year-old colt named Espolon (Great Notion), who sold for
$60,000 at last year=s Fasig-Tipton=s Midlantic Fall yearling sale.

Boerne shot straight out the gate and moved over to the rail to
control the pace in Gulfstream=s Azalea S. She was able to set a
moderate pace of :23.13 for the first quarter before picking it up
a bit for a :45.35 half while being dogged by Compensate (Liam=s
Map). Boerne put that one way, then drifted wide through
three-quarters in 1:09.24 over the slop. She continued to drift,
in spite of right-handed encouragement. The dark bay ended
very wide, but still held on for a 1 3/4-length score.
It was Boerne=s first black-type victory after three straight wins
at Gulfstream while moving through her conditions to start the
season. Her last win was a 6 1/2-furlong May 3 allowance before
grudgingly giving up the lead and placing second in the June 6

The lightly raced Trickle In got her first black-type win in
Delaware Park=s Christiana S. in her second stakes try. A first-out
maiden winner at this distance on Belmont=s lawn last October
when trained by Jonathan Thomas, the bay was switched to
Michael Stidham for her second start and win when shortened
slightly to a mile for an allowance/optional claimer at Fair
Grounds Jan. 17. Sent in the Shantel Lanerie Memorial
Overnight S. Feb. 8, Trickle In didn=t get her customary lead and
weakened to fourth.
Back on the lead in the Christiana, Trickle In showed the way
throughout fractions of :23.57 and :47.54. Pressured from the
outside by Toolcat (Kitten=s Joy) and eventually headed by that
one on the turn, Trickle In held sway through three-quarters in
1:11.20. As Toolcat faded in the lane while Duchess of Sussex
and Embossed had her in their sights, Trickle In remained strong
for a length triumph.
Knox County Zip sold for $80,000 at the 2016 Keeneland
November sale while carrying Trickle In. Her 2018 colt, I=m
Blaming You (Blame), sold for $100,000 at OBS March. A half-

Emmet McNamara looks back and sees no challengers to Serpentine
in the Investec Derby | Racing Post
SERPENTINE SUBLIME INTHE DERBY
By Tom Frary
It was a clear-record eighth G1 Investec Derby at Epsom on
Saturday for Aidan O=Brien, but not necessarily with the
expected one as Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) went off on his
own under Emmet McNamara and did a ASlip Anchor@ to score
by 5 1/2 lengths. Always clear at the head of affairs, the
previous Saturday=s nine-length Curragh maiden winner was still
dangerously out of reach swinging around Tattenham Corner
and kept grinding to lead home a shock trifecta. Khalifa Sat (Ire)
(Free Eagle {Ire}), Andrew Balding=s second string behind the
fourth-placed 5-2 favourite Kameko (Kitten=s Joy), held on for
second at 50-1 by a half length from Ballydoyle=s 66-1 shot
Amhran Na Bhfiann (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Derrick Smith=s son Paul
summed up the bizarre turn of events in the most bizarre of
years. AWhen you=ve got Galileo and you=ve got Aidan, anything
is possible,@ he said. AThey let him go and he just ran for fun. It
was an incredible race to watch and once they=d left him alone I
thought >this is going to be interesting=. Galileo is the holy one
and long may it last.@
Aidan O=Brien was back at base and said, AIt=s unbelievable
really. He has some pedigree and we always thought he would
stay well. Wayne [Lordan] won on him over a mile and a quarter
at The Curragh last week and he galloped straight through the
line.@ Cont. p2
LOVE ROMPS IN THE OAKS Already an emphatic winner of the G1 1000 Guineas,
Coolmore=s Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) entered elite territory on
Saturday with a nine-length romp in the G1 Investec Oaks at
Epsom. While not quite in the arena of the 12-length 1983
heroine Sun Princess (GB), this winning margin equalled that of
the 1996 heroine Lady Carla (GB) (Caerleon) and there have
been only four fillies in this race=s history to have won by
further.
Settled behind a duo among the main six-strong group racing
adrift of the runaway pacemakers Tiempo Vuela (GB) (Lope de
Vega {Ire}) and Passion (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) early, the chestnut
moved forward to swamp stablemate Ennistymon (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) approaching two out. Powering clear from there, she led
home another one-two for Ballydoyle as Ennistymon held off
Frankly Darling (GB) (Frankel {GB}) by 3/4 of a length for the
runner=s-up spot. Cont. p5

Serpentine gives them the slip | Racing Post
Serpentine Sublime In The Derby cont. from p1
AHe went an even pace and Wayne said he couldn=t pull him
up. We were happy he wasn=t going to stop and go an even
pace. He wasn=t going to come back. He=s another homebred by
Galileo. He always had the
Derby pedigree. He took a bit
of time to come last year and
just had the one run. There
was no doubt with his
performance the last day he
had to take his chance. I=m
absolutely delighted for
Emmet. He gave him an
incredible ride, so I=m over the
moon. They all run on their
merits and we give them the
best instructions for each horse
to win the race. He stayed well
and there was no point waiting
with him with no pace. We are always delighted if one of them
wins.@
Serpentine was given a quote of 9-2 for the G1 St Leger post-
race and 14-1 for the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe.
"He stays very well,@ O=Brien said. AI don't think he would have
a problem with soft ground in the autumn in an Arc.
AThis horse has a little bit of knee action and on his pedigree, he
would handle slower ground in something like an Arc.@
Just over a week previously, Serpentine was a twice-raced
unplaced maiden very much on the fringes of the stable=s
candidates for this 241st renewal.
In the opener on the Irish Derby
card, the chestnut had put himself
in the picture with a dynamic
front-running display under
Wayne Lordan and there had
been a quiet word that he was
fancied to outrun his odds here.
For McNamara, the race was as
straightforward as it gets and he
was able to play Steve Cauthen in
isolation as the great Kentuckian
had when catching his peers by
surprise in 1985. Hitting the first
left-hand turn, the eventual first
three home were in those positions which suggests the track
was playing very much to front-runners on the day.
Much of the race was uneventful, but running downhill to
Tattenham Corner Khalifa Sat was at full stride trying to stay
within hailing distance of Serpentine and all the fancied horses
were already struggling to make any inroads.

Emmet McNamara and Serpentine | Racing Post
Just as Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) had in last year=s G1 Irish
Derby in these same grey Susan Magnier silks, Serpentine kept
rolling and by the half-mile marker it was clear from
McNamara=s body language that his mount was still
comfortable. A furlong from home, the result was settled with
the wall of favourites unable to even get past Khalifa Sat.
Finishing in a heap behind the runner-up and the Rosegreen
maiden Amhran Na Bhfiann, the riders of Kameko, English King
(Fr) (Camelot {GB}), Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Russian Emperor
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will
perhaps be inflicting self-incriminations for letting the winner
go.
According to Andrew Balding, Oisin Murphy was already
castigating himself in the immediate aftermath. AOisin is cross
with himself, but I don=t know why,@ the master of Kingsclere
said. AKameko ran well to a point and Oisin just felt he emptied
out a little bit late on. He will certainly be dropping back in trip
and that=s his last run over a mile and a half. We had to give it a
go and Sheikh Fahad is a proper sportsman, so he=ll take it on
the chin. I=m thrilled with Khalifa Sat, he=s a very nice horse for
the future and ran a great Leger trial. Fair play to Aidan, he=s got
the ammo and he knows how to use it.@
Ed Walker said of the fifth-placed English King, AThe way the
race panned out was frustrating, purely and simply. I am thrilled
with everything--proud as punch of the horse, Frankie did well
from a difficult draw. I have got no excuses, it was just a
frustrating race. A Derby with no pace--there is no such thing
these days, really--and we needed pace. He has hit the line hard
and in another 50 yards he might have been second.@
Aidan O=Brien=s eight Derby winners have been ridden by
seven different jockeys and the precedent was there for
McNamara to cause an upset. AI think I got a little bit of a
freebie,@ commented the rider, who had gone so close on Tiger
Moth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in Saturday=s Irish equivalent.

AI had a huge amount of confidence in the horse, having
spoken to Aidan during the week. He said he was a horse that is
going to stay a mile and six well, he said >jump, go your own
tempo and just from halfway, from the six to the five, give him a
breather=. He said >he=ll keep going= and he was right. All I could
hear was the horse breathing. He was in a good rhythm, he was
relaxed and I couldn=t hear a thing around me. I wasn=t sure, but
I knew I was a few clear all right. It=s a bit surreal. I can=t believe
it.@
Pedigree Notes Serpentine, who was beaten a total of 16 lengths when 10th of
11 on debut in a maiden over an extended mile at Galway in
September and fifth at The Curragh on June 12 before he turned
his fortunes around so dramatically, is no surprise winner of this
on pedigree at least. His dam is the Listed Victor McCalmont
Memorial S. winner Remember When (Ire) (Danehill Dancer
{Ire}), who was third before being latterly awarded the
runner-up spot in the 2010 G1 Epsom Oaks. Her progeny are all
by Galileo and are the G2 Kilboy Estate S. winner and G1 Nassau
S. runner-up Wedding Vow (Ire), the G3 Blue Wind S. winner Bye
Bye Baby (Ire) who was also third in the 2018 G1 Epsom Oaks,
the G3 Gallinule S. scorer Beacon Rock (Ire) and the Listed Trigo
S. scorer Bound (Ire).
Remember When is a three-parts-sister to the G1 Prix de l=Arc
de Triomphe and G1 Irish Derby-winning champion Dylan
Thomas (Ire) (Danehill), as well as being kin to the shock G1
1000 Guineas heroine Homecoming Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman
Emperor {Ire}) and the G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Queen=s
Logic (Ire) (Grand Lodge), who is the second dam of the G2
Lowther S. winner Queen Kindly (GB) by Galileo=s Frankel (GB).
Remember When also has an as-yet unnamed 2-year-old colt by
Galileo and a yearling colt by the same sire.

Love all alone at the line | Racing Post
Love Romps In The Oaks cont. from p1
AShe is very special I think,@ Moore said of the 11-10 favourite.
AShe was exceptional today. We always thought she was very
good, she proved that in the Guineas and took another step
forward. She loved the trip and one of her best furlongs was her
last. She couldn=t have been any more impressive. You never
expect to win an Oaks by that
far.@
Campaigned over seven
furlongs on her first six starts,
Love was fourth at Leopardstown
and second at The Curragh in
June before heading back to the
former venue the following
month to break her maiden and
add the G3 Silver Flash S. to her
rally. Only fifth a month later in
the G2 Debutante S. back at The
Curragh in August, she may have
been undermined by the rain-
eased ground there and was duly
back in dominant mood when
annexing the G1 Moyglare Stud S. also there in September.
Taken to Newmarket for the G1 Fillies= Mile, she was 1 3/4-
lengths third to Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) when again the
ground was riding on the soft side of good but conditions were
ideal on her return last month for her first Classic date.
That four-length win in the June 7 Newmarket Classic marked
her out as of distinguished class, but this powerful display was
something else. While it was a strange race tactically, with
Tiempo Vuela and Passion harrying each other into setting an
unsustainable pace and the Ribblesdale winner Frankly Darling
never looking happy on the track, Love was in a league of her
own virtually the whole way. Seamie Heffernan made the first
move when steering Ennistymon down the descent on the rail,
but Moore always had her covered and while the first three in
the market came away from the rest it was Love who ended the
contest in isolation.
Aidan O=Brien, who was registering an eighth victory in the
Classic, commented, ABefore the Guineas we were aware that it
was a little bit short for her--we always thought she would get a
mile and a quarter well and obviously she is by Galileo and has a
lovely, long, low action. As you
see she is very genuine, sticks
her head out and really tries
very hard, so we were always
hoping that the extra distance
was going to improve her, and
we were absolutely delighted
with the result.@
AShe was working incredibly
well,@ he added. AHer last few
canters through the week were
incredible, really, so although
we obviously didn=t know what
was going to happen, we were
aware that she was incredibly
well. We are in a very privileged
position to have such horses to train and an incredible group of
people, both here and in Coolmore, and everybody involved.
Love is very special. It is very hard to say you would ever have a
better filly than her--we saw what she did in the Guineas.
AWe will wait and see what is next and the lads will decide
that, but obviously the Irish Oaks is a possibility. We will see how
she is over the next few days before we make any decisions, but
that was always going to be a possibility. You would have to
think about the Arc in the autumn. We know what 3-year-old
fillies can do in the Arc. We would definitely have to think about
it. I guess it will all depend on how she comes out of today and
whether she has a midsummer break now or gets in another run
and has a break after that, but the Arc has to be a definite
possibility.@

Love completes the Guineas/Oaks double | Racing Post
There is a chance that Love could emulate Oh So Sharp (Ire)
(Kris {GB}) in completing the fillies= Triple Crown, but O=Brien
seemed cool on the idea in the aftermath of this second part of
the equation. AThe St Leger comes three weeks or a month
before the Arc, so would it be too tough for a filly to do that and
then go on to the Arc? I don=t know, but I suppose we will see
how she trains and what the lads want to do.@
Of Ennistymon, O=Brien said, AWe felt after Ascot that we
would be happy to take the winner on again. It worked out how
we thought it might. She was back a bit at Ascot and Frankly
Darling got an easier time out in front and that changed today.
We were delighted with her performance today and the quick
pace suited. She is a very nice filly for Mrs Stockwell.@ Frankie
Dettori said of Frankly Darling, AThe track was not for her. She
just started hanging and all sorts.@
Pedigree Notes Love=s dam Pikaboo (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) is also responsible for
the G2 Lowther S. and G2 Cherry Hinton S. scorer Lucky Kristale
(GB) (Lucky Story) and the strong-staying Group 3-winning
Galileo fillies Flattering (Ire) and Peach Tree (Ire). Pikaboo is a
half-sister to the seven-furlong specialist and dual G2 Park S.-
winning sire Arabian Gleam (GB) by Pivotal=s son Kyllachy (GB),
and the listed-winning sprinter Kimberella (GB) who is also by
Kyllachy. Another half-sibling Light Quest (Quest For Fame {GB})
produced the G3 Prix Fille de l=Air scorer and stakes producer
Skia (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) and the Singapore Gold Cup winner
Tropaios (GB) (Excellent Art {GB}). This is also the family of the
G1 English and Irish 2000 Guineas-winning sire Don=t Forget Me

ROMANCE IS BACK Saturday=s G3 Princess Elizabeth S. at Epsom turned into an
extremely tactical affair, with William Buick on the money
dictating on Godolphin=s >TDN Rising Star= Summer Romance
(Ire) (Kingman {GB}) to make all. Always comfortable setting a
moderate pace shadowed by the G1 1000 Guineas runner-up
Cloak of Spirits (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), the one-time
exciting Listed Empress S. winner who had threatened to
disappear into the wilderness was always holding that rival in
the sprint up the straight. Hitting the line with 3/4 of a length to
spare, the 9-1 shot was announcing a return to form as Rose of
Kildare (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) snatched third, 3 3/4 lengths
away.
AShe ran in the Guineas, but I wasn=t in a good position--I had a
wall of bad horses in front of me,@ Buick explained. AIt was hard
to notice it with the naked eye, but she did a lot of good work in
the Guineas. She was staying on past horses. Last year she was
obviously very speedy, very sharp, but Charlie was adamant a
mile was within her compass. Obviously I got a soft lead today
and it definitely suited her. She really deserved that. She=s
always been perceived as a nice filly in the stable. I=m just so
glad she=s got a group win next to her name and she=s a filly that
should go through the grades nicely.@
Summer Romance was two-for-two after her six-length
success in the six-furlong Empress at Newmarket in June, but
the wheels came off when sixth in Ascot=s G3 Princess Margaret
S. the following month. Charlie Appleby said he felt there were
unmitigating circumstances for that flop and she was put away
after a subsequent underwhelming third in the G3 Dick Poole
Fillies= S. also over six at Salisbury in September. Returning with
an eighth in the June 7 G1 1000 Guineas, where she was almost
six lengths adrift of Cloak of Spirits, the grey cut a different
figure here even allowing for her rider=s guile on a day where
closers were finding it tough.
Charlie Appleby said, AIt was a great ride by William and we
are very pleased to see Summer Romance win a Group 3 race.
She won on debut last year before scoring impressively in the
Empress S., but lost her way a little bit afterwards. We felt that
she would come forward for her first run of the season in the
1000 Guineas and she has done it well in the end. It is nice to
see her get her head in front and, while we have no immediate
plans, we can think about looking for some more nice races.@

MOTHER EARTH DOMINATES AT NAAS While the big wheels were turning at Epsom on Saturday,
there was a staging post for future movers-and-shakers at Naas
and it was Ballydoyle=s Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) who
shone brightly in the G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies= Sprint S.
Coming back from Royal Ascot, where she had run a creditable
third in the June 19 G3 Albany S. over this six-furlong trip, the
bay put the pressure on Jessie Harrington=s June 20 Naas
maiden winner Sussex Garden (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) from the
outset and had her measure before the two-furlong marker.
Stretching clear under Wayne Lordan, the 10-11 favourite had
carved out a four-length advantage at the line, with the outsider
Give Her a Squeeze (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) 2 1/2 lengths away in
third.
AShe=s a smashing filly and her form was good enough to win,@
Lordan said. AI travelled easy and she=s a filly that=s going to stay

ALL POWER TO HIM
Having impressed when winning Royal Ascot=s Palace of
Holyroodhouse H., King Power racing=s Art Power (Ire) (Dark
Angel {Ire}) proved on Saturday that the move up to another
level was well within his range as he mastered the G3 Coolmore
Sioux Nation Lacken S. at Naas. Emphatic in that five-furlong test
at the Royal meeting on June 19, the grey showed the same
speed to race prominently up the centre and after edging ahead
of last year=s G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Millisle (Ire)
(Starspangledbanner {Aus}) with a furlong remaining drew away
to win by 2 1/2 lengths, with Zarzyni (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) 4 1/2
lengths away in third.
Unbeaten since his debut third at Newcastle in September,
with his following four starts including this black-type
breakthrough won by a cumulative margin of 16 1/2 lengths, Art
Power is a sprinter going places fast. Colin Keane was on the first
British-trained runner in Ireland since the return of racing and
he said, AHe=s a lovely horse, very relaxed and the minute you
pick him up he=s very sharp. It=s like putting your foot on an
accelerator. I=d say he=s a horse with a big future. He was a big
help to me--he was very straightforward. He felt like a Group 1
horse--very sharp, a lot of speed and a great mind to go with it
for a sprinter especially. I=d say he=ll keep progressing.@
Pedigree Notes Art Power is out of the Listed Sweet Mimosa S. winner and G3
Phoenix Sprint S. runner-up Evening Time (Ire) (Keltos {Fr}), who
was also third in the G3 The Minstrel S. Her leading performers
until Saturday were the G3 Ballyogan S. winner Penny Pepper

Morning Frost (Ire) (Duke of Maralade {Ire}) and the Tropical
Park Oaks runner-up Shaan (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), but this colt
surpassed them with this performance.

TOTAL ECLIPSE By 3.35pm on Sunday, the Derby and Oaks will already be old
news and the dust will be settling after Chantilly=s early-
afternoon prestige races. As if all the Classics that played out
over the longest weekend were mere support acts, Juddmonte=s
sovereign Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) is back to take up most
of the headline inches in a renewal of Sandown=s
G1 Coral-Eclipse which rates as one of the finest in its recent
history.
No horse in training has the same draw as the 6-year-old and
although the Classic generation are excluded this year, given
that we are talking also about Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}),
Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) and
Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) it is debatable whether any
would have dared turn up at all.
In theory, tactics should be straightforward if past precedent is
anything to go by with Ghaiyyath almost certain to go forward
from stall six. His emphatic G1 Coronation Cup success was
affirmation that he is a serious racehorse which he had already
suggested when registering a 14-length win in the G1 Grosser
Preis von Baden in September. John Gosden has been at pains to
stress that the 2020 version of Enable may not be as dynamic as
the prior incarnations, but with Ghaiyyath to aim at she should
at least have the ideal bullseye. If successful, she will be the
sixth dual winner of this and the first since Halling to do so in
1995 and 1996.
Teddy Grimthorpe said of Enable, AIt=s no secret her main
target this season is the Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe again, she
came so close last year. Everything she does before that will be
building up to Paris. John has made no secret that the older she
gets, it just takes that little bit longer to get her fit, there=s no
question about that. We=re looking forward to seeing her again.@
Charlie Appleby said of Ghaiyyath, AHe is in great form and his
preparation has gone well. Dropping back to 10 furlongs doesn=t
worry me. In the past we have been concerned, as we have all
seen how those big performances take it out of him. Winning by
these big margins looks comfortable, but in the past those
performances have taken their toll. This year we have seen a
difference and we saw that at the start of the year when he won
well in Dubai.

AT THE END OF THE DAY WE ALL HAVE
ENABLE TO BEAT. HOWEVER, WE ARE
GOING THERE OURSELVES WITH A
HORSE WE’VE ALWAYS HELD
IN HIGH REGARD.Charlie Appleby on Ghaiyyath
The most encouraging part of that performance and what
makes it exciting is post-race he has held his condition well and
visually he has bounced back. He took the Coronation Cup really
well. It was always the plan afterwards to head for the Eclipse.
People mentioned the Prince of Wales=s S., but we wanted to
give him that gap and the Eclipse fits in well.
AWith no 3-year-olds in the
race it changes the dynamics a
bit, but a good field has still
been pulled together. At the
end of the day we have all got
Enable to beat. I know she is six
and John Gosden has said she
has taken a bit longer to come
to hand, but she is such a classy
animal. However, we are going
there ourselves with a horse
that we have always held in
high regard and is going there
on the back of a nice seasonal
debut.@
Coolmore and Masaaki
Matsushima=s Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) represents Ballydoyle
and should strip fitter and sharper for his reintroduction when
fourth in the June 17 G1 Prince of Wales=s S. at Royal Ascot.
Tardy out of the gates there, last year=s G1 Juddmonte
International winner will have to break on terms to have any
chance this time as the field play catch-up to Godolphin=s
trailblazer. AWhat happened to Japan at Ascot was Ryan was
waiting on the stalls to open and when the starter shouted
>hoods off= he jumped and hit the stalls, so when the stalls did
open he was on the back foot
and lost a little bit of ground,@
Aidan O=Brien explained. ARyan
then let him go forward but he
did that when the pace was
strong, it was his first run and
the combination of all that he
got a little bit tired in the last
furlong, but Ryan was very
happy with him.@
O=Brien also saddles Magic
Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is
a potentially crucial second
string with her early pace
potentially a fly in the ointment for Ghaiyyath. She comes into
this on the back of an impressive success over a mile in the G2
Lanwades Stud S. at The Curragh on June 13. AThe plan was
always to come here if Japan was fine and we think he=ll come
forward again, so we=re looking forward to it. In an ideal world
you might want a little more time, but it=s not an ideal world.
Charlie=s horse is there who could make the running and we=ve
got the filly [Magic Wand] in there also, so it=s good to be able to
take part in it. She is in good form, we need to keep finding her
races to keep her ticking along and then when something really
suits her she can run a very good
race. She=s very well, very happy
to go forward, but in this race
there should be plenty of pace.@
Another who will benefit from
a strong pace is last year=s G1
Nassau S. heroine and G1
Champion S. third Deirdre (Jpn)
(Harbinger {GB}), who was upset
in the Feb. 29 Mohamed Yousuf
Naghi Motors Cup over 10 1/2
furlongs at Riyadh. Oisin Murphy
will know where to place her and
it is just a case of how much
ground she can make up in the
home straight. ADeirdre=s been
working really well and that continued this week as she flew up
the Al Bahathri again,@ he explained. AShe=s in a great routine at
present and we=re very happy with her. Obviously it=s a hugely
competitive race with Enable and Ghaiyyath in there. It=s a
brilliant race, it doesn=t get much better really, but she=s in
grand form and I=m expecting her to run well.@
Earlier in the day at Chantilly, >TDN Rising Star= Victor Ludorum
(GB) bids to emulate his recently-deceased sire Shamardal by
completing the G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains-G1 Prix du Jockey
Club double. Drawn in one
against the rail, the bay--who
also captured the G1 Prix
Jean-Luc Lagardere--is expected
to appreciate the step up from a
mile, having finished off strongly
when annexing the Poulains over
Deauville=s straight track on June
1. Intriguingly, Shamardal=s
Andre Fabre-trained son Lope de
Vega (Ire) was one of a trio to
complete the same Classic
double in 2010 and it may be
that the stars have aligned for
Godolphin=s homebred. AVictor Ludorum is in good form and I
am very happy with his level of condition,@ commented Fabre,
who is looking for a fifth renewal. AI am confident the distance
will not pose a problem. This race has long been the objective.@

Cont. from p11
Fabre also saddles another >TDN Rising Star= in Ocean
Atlantique (American Pharoah), but Coolmore=s impressive May
31 Listed Prix de Suresnes winner has a wide draw to hamper his
prospects. He also has to reverse form with the Wertheimers=
Pao Alto (Fr), the son of the 2013 Jockey Club hero Intello (Ger)
who has been freshened up since their encounter in
ParisLongchamp=s G3 Prix la Force. Successful by 1 1/2 lengths in
that May 14 nine-furlong trial, Pao Alto also holds the third-
placed Chachnak (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) who has subsequently won
the G3 Prix de Guiche also over that trip here on June 10.
In the first truly post-lockdown trans-European encounter at
the top level, John Gosden saddles Prince Faisal=s impressive
June 6 Listed Newmarket S. winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe
{GB}), while Aidan O=Brien=s duo are headed by Saturday=s G1
Irish Derby fourth Order of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}).
Seamie Heffernan said of him, AThe trip will help, as will nicer
ground.@
Jean-Claude Rouget is looking for a fourth renewal and his
strongest chance appears to be Claudio Marzocco=s unbeaten
Port Guillaume (Fr) by the 2009 Jockey Club hero Le Havre (Ire).
He beat the re-opposing Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}) in a
conditions event over this trip at Saint-Cloud on May 12 and the
latter is one of three runners from the Fabrice Chappet yard.
After his reversal at Saint-Cloud, Gold Trip took a weak renewal
of the 11-furlong G2 Prix Greffulhe at Lyon-Parilly on June 6 and
will have to improve to bring owner Jean-Louis Bouchard a
fourth Jockey Club. His three others, Celtic Arms (Fr), Ragmar
(Fr) and Blue Canari (Fr), came between 1994 and 2004 in its
former guise as a mile-and-a-half Derby equivalent. AGold Trip
won the Greffulhe so easily. The opposition is stronger here, but
we don=t know yet how good he is,@ Chappet said.
In the G1 Prix de Diane Longines, the Niarchos Family are
omnipresent again with the impressive G1 Coronation S. heroine
Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) looking to capture a fifth
edition for her owner-breeders since Northern Trick started the
ball rolling in 1984. A granddaughter of the 1994 Diane heroine
East of the Moon (Private Account), the half-sister to Alpha
Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) boasts the best form
among her age and sex and raced as if she needs this 10 1/2-
furlong trip when putting Sharing (Speightstown) and
Quadrilateral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in their place at Royal Ascot
June 20. AWe want to look after Alpine Star, she prefers soft
ground even though she=s proven she will adapt to anything,@
Kate Harrington said.
Michael Tabor=s June 13 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas first and
second Peaceful (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Fancy Blue (Ire) (Deep
Impact {Jpn}) add significant weight to the Irish challenge, with
the former representing Aidan O=Brien who is yet to win this
Classic. Seamie Heffernan has never made any secret of his
regard for Peaceful and said, AAll I need is a bit of luck. I like this
one--she never disappoints me.@ Donnacha O=Brien is
responsible for Fancy Blue, who caught the eye coming from far
back in that Curragh Classic and he said, AShe is in very good
form and her work has been really good. I have a fantastic rider
[Pierre-Charles Boudot] on board and hopefully she=ll run a big
race. She is a possible for the Irish Oaks down the line and we=ll
know more after the weekend, but her pedigree is all stamina
and this step up in trip will suit her. She did well to make up
ground in the Irish Guineas and it was a very promising run. It=s a
very good race with Alpine Star in there and a few unexposed
French fillies, but we=re very happy with our filly.@
Fabrice Chappet again has three engaged, with the pick
perhaps being Speak of the Devil (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB})
who would have beaten Dream and Do (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in
another stride in the G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches at Deauville
on June 1.
TDN EUROPE • PAGE 13 OF 26 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 5 JULY 2020
Fabrice Chappet saddles three in the Prix de Diane | Scoop Dyga
Antoine Gilibert=s Mageva (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) was
two lengths back in third on that occasion, while Lael Stable=s
May 14 G3 Prix Vanteaux-winning acquisition Magic Attitude
(GB) (Galileo {Ire}) was five-lengths second to Tawkeel (GB)
(Teofilo {Ire}) in the 10-furlong G1 Prix Saint Alary here on June
14.
ASpeak of the Devil was having
only her third career start when
second in the Pouliches--the
plan had been to have another
race before that, but the
lockdown meant that wasn=t
possible,@ Chappet explained.
AThe question for her is one of
stamina. Her dam is by Indian
Rocket, who passes on a lot of
speed. Mageva ran in the
Pouliches like a filly who could
run over further. She was
another to give a remarkable
performance in Deauville.
Neither filly has run at Chantilly before, but they=ve both worked
on the racetrack. Magic Attitude ran a bit free in the Prix
Saint-Alary. We will ride her more quietly on Sunday. All three
fillies deserve to take part in the Diane.@
In a race that arguably has more depth than the G1 Epsom
Oaks, another dimension is added by the presence of Alain
Jathiere and Ecurie du Parc Monceau=s Miss Extra (Fr)
(Masterstroke) who steps up from a mile having captured the
June 19 G2 Prix de Sandringham here. Trained in partnership by
Pia and Joakim Brandt, the supplementary entry originally ran in
the colours of her breeder Sophie Boulin Redouly, a vet and
author of crime novels, and is now part-owned by Philippe
Lazare, the former CEO of Ingenico. The latter said, AEveryone
dreams of running in the big races and the Diane is one of them.
I am in partnership with an excellent owner in Alain Jathiere and
Miss Extra has improved a lot and comes into the race off three
wins. She=s a good filly and is also with a good trainer. Her
pedigree is interesting, with a speedy female family and a sire
who brings stamina.@
At Haydock, soft ground is the order of the day and that will
play into the hands of the Waverley Racing-owned and Ralph
Beckett-trained daughters of Lope de Vega (Ire), Manuela de
Vega (Ire) and Antonia de Vega (Ire), in the feature G2 bet365
Lancashire Oaks. Ridden with supreme confidence by Rob
Hornby when making all from the subsequent G2 Hardwicke S.
scorer Fanny Logan (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the course-and-
distance G3 Pinnacle S. on June 7, Manuela de Vega is again
partnered by that rider with Harry Bentley on Antonia de Vega.
The latter has captured the G3 Prestige S., Listed Abingdon S.
and Listed Pontefract Castle Fillies= S. giving the impression there
is something bigger in her locker. AI hope they get more rain, as
the softer the better,@ Bentley said on Friday. AShe really handles
it--it looks a strong renewal, but she suits a galloping track and
I=m looking forward to it.@
Another 4-year-old of note in
the Lancashire Oaks is Anthony
Oppenheimer=s returning G2 Prix
de Pomone scorer Dame Malliot
(GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), who
showed more than a glimpse in
2019 that she could be out of
the top drawer. The 3-year-old
challenge comes in the form of
Cheveley Park Stud=s >TDN Rising
Star= Cabaletta (GB)
(Mastercraftsman {Ire}), who is a
daughter of Allegretto (Ire)
(Galileo {Ire}) who captured this
at the same age in 2006. Having
beaten Frankly Darling (GB) (Frankel {GB}) on her sole 2-year-old
start over a mile at Yarmouth in October, the Roger Varian-
trained homebred was runner-up to the potentially high-class
Franconia (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in Newbury=s Listed Abingdon
Fillies= S. over a mile and a quarter on June 13. She will relish this
step up in trip and can call on a sizeable 12-pound weight-for-
age pull with her elders.
Also on Sunday is Sandown=s G3 Coral Charge, where the 3-
year-old sprinters look to dominate their elders courtesy of
Godolphin=s impressive June 13 Listed Scurry S. winner Lazuli
(Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and last year=s G3 Molecomb S. winner
Liberty Beach (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}). Lazuli is highly-regarded by
Charlie Appleby and he said, AHe has a nice draw, which can be
very important at Sandown, and has come out of his last race
well. This is his first run against older opposition, but he goes
there in good order with a good course-and-distance win under
his belt.@ Liberty Beach, who was third in the G1 King=s Stand S.
at Royal Ascot on June 16, races at a consistent high level and
won over this course and distance in last year=s Listed Dragon S.
Godolphin are also represented on the Sandown undercard by
the 2018 G1 Melbourne Cup hero Cross Counter (GB) (Teofilo
{Ire}) in the two-mile G3 Coral Henry II S. He drops in class,
having been third in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on June 18
and Charlie Appleby said he believes it could be an ideal
confidence boost. ADropping back to two miles on a sounder
surface is going to suit Cross Counter. We feel that he has
definitely come forward for his run in the Gold Cup and this
looks a nice opportunity to hopefully get his head back in front.@

Successful in a mile maiden at Gowran Park in September,
Even So was one of the few who returned pre-lockdown and
was third in the Mar. 23 G3 Park Express S. over a mile here.
Fifth in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh on June 13, the

deemed likely to suit. Strongly challenged by Laburnum inside
the final two furlongs, she gave generously to prevail as the

AShe=s as game as a pebble,@ Shane Lyons said. AShe came out
of the Guineas in great form. She doesn=t show an awful lot, but
is one of those fillies that brings it to the racecourse and Colin
[Keane] said she was even a little bit fresh in his hands. The plan
was always to go for the [G1 Irish] Oaks, as we know that [12-

thrives after this and with a little bit of cut in the ground that is
where she goes.@
