Created for the School

Recording, broadcast and post-production studio facilities were created for the School of Music, Art,

Design and Media.

Huge success due to their timeline

Most projects of this kind have a minimum lead time of four months for design and install and VA only had 6 weeks due to

the nature of the program.

External reporting and contributions

The two radio studios are identically equipped and centred around the Lawo Crystal mixer with Vistools and uses the Tieline

Commander for external reporting and contributions.

Working closely with other disciplines

Worked closely with the school academics, technicians and principal contractor Willmott Dixon to create studios that reflect

the latest ideas and practices of commercial radio so students gain real experience of the commercial world.

Worldwide technology

The worldwide technology leader in media and entertainment asked Veale Associates to remedy the

acoustics in their London studios.

Altering the acoustics

The concepts for altering the acoustics comprised of blade diffusers directly above the consoles in each

area and a RPG diffuser on the glass partition to the lift landing.

Ceiling suspended module

The ceiling suspended module reflected the shape, size and profile of the console, having a sharp front edge

and increasing at the back (to a wedge shape) installed above each console cluster.

The function of the blades

The function of the blades was to use the sides and bottom to modify the room reflections, provide some acoustic absorption from their diffusive effect and to

use their absorptive top to reduce the free energy within the space.

Andrea LissoniSenior Curator, International Art & Film

“Thank you for such a great effort in improving the setting of the Starr Cinema. It is not obvious that someone who has been experimenting with sound for about 50 years as Laurie Anderson, is instantly convinced and happy re: the sound conditions for such a layered film. The Q&A (well, more a monologue) went perfectly sound wise, thank you for working hard on that. We were all overwhelmed last Friday by your amazing commitment”.

STARR CINEMATATE MODERNVaried programme of events and screenings, the only of its kind

The 15 year old, 250 seat Starr Auditorium in the iconic Tate Modern has been revitalised to a very high specification, multi-function venue offering facilities unique to the UK. The brief required a state-of-the-art technical solution integrated cinema, live performance and presentation in a single facility.

The performance stage needed enlargement and a full multi channel live sound system installing. The presentation facilities are for high-profile corporate functions through to internal AV educational presentations.

Before the technology could be addressed the acoustics needed a major overhaul. The solution involved stripping back the auditorium to the structural walls improving the sound isolation and constructing a more acoustically satisfying room that would optimise the technology housed within it.

Dolby Atmos is a prime feature of the cinema, existing columns created sound shadows that were corrected by pairing speakers that shared the same audio channel. Base traps were installed in the walls and ceiling, speakers were concealed to minimise impact on the aesthetic, and everything met the approval of Tate’s project team and Dolby while fulfilling the demand for transparency of the sound source.

Music recording, broadcast, TV and post-production studios were created for the London College of Music and London School of Film, Media and Design at the University of West London. Studio construction had to meet a huge programme demand to avoid a delay to the master project. Most projects of this kind have a minimum lead time of four months for design and install and the new music studios were delivered in 6 weeks.

VA worked closely with the school academics, technicians and principal contractor Willmott Dixon to create radio studios that reflect the latest ideas and practices of commercial radio so students gain real experience of the commercial world needs.

The two radio studios are identically equipped and centred around the Lawo Crystal mixer with Vistools and uses the Tieline Commander for external reporting and contributions, Protools with RedNet to ingest music from other parts of the campus and record live studio productions, Myriad for play-out, Burli for news capture and script editing, Phonebox for phone-in contributions, DJ kit comprising Pioneer CDs and record decks and mixer, Neuman microphones, PMC two two5 monitor speakers, Adder integrated KVM switches to seamlessly link the kit in the CAR/Racks room to the studio desk and wall display screens.

BFBS - BRITISH FORCES BROADCASTING SERVICESProfessional studios for a host of different users

Location : Chalfont Grove, Narcot Lane, Gerrards Cross, SL9 8TN, United Kingdom Area : 300.0 sqm Project Year : 2013 / 2014Photographs : VAContractor : EG Silverthorn & DB Broadcast

Veale Associates joined forces with the British Forces Broadcast Service (BFBS) creating new TV and edit studios to provide a new news service and to refurbish the 1980s broadcast facilities that have been supporting troops serving abroad since 1943.

The new TV news service required a studio with gallery and 5 edit booths. To bring the radio up to date 3 radio studios and 3 radio production booths were refurbished. The green screen television news studio and 5 edit studios formed part of an investment programme orchestrated by the charity which provides this invaluable service, the Services Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC), under its contract with the MOD.

The project included an extensive technical upgrade to broadcast hardware, power distribution, data connectivity and play out systems including upgrades incorporating touch screen controls across several systems. An easy to use clock and lighting system was installed to enable staff to see and select the different time zones for broadcasting to our troops overseas.

John Sullivan Head of Projects and Infrastructure at SSVC

“Everyone is pleased with the final result. The refurbishment has given presenters a better working environment and a commonality with the studios they work from around the globe. We are particularly delighted to continue a long association with Veale Associates. The company’s flexibility in accommodating our requirements and changing timelines has been very much appreciated.”

KERRANG! STUDIO BIRMINGHAMHigh visual communication and interaction throughout the premise

Studio Designers : Veale AssociatesProject : Commercial Radio BroadcastingUse : Broadcasting radio liveLocation : Aqua Building, Lional Street Birmingham, United Kingdom Area : 560.0 sqm Project Year : 2010Photographs : VAContractor : EG Silverthorn, Skyline Office Interior

In 2010 Kerrang! became the new broadcaster in Birmingham. High visual communication and interaction throughout the premise was essential and the reception was linked to the zoo area and studios through extensive use of glass. The studios incorporated huge windows for maximum visibility which, coupled with the generous use of metallic surfaces, demanded an innovative approach to acoustic design.

The glass used in the studios measured 3.4x1.7m and 24mm thick presenting a number of challenges including the logistics of moving it into place. The extent of glass required for visual impact significantly affected the room acoustics, demanding a high level of innovative acoustic design. The glass was specially formulated to achieve 50dB isolation and the angles were calculated to minimise effect upon the room acoustics. Careful acoustic design was undertaken to maximise the use of hard surfaces to produce well-tempered studios that met the demands of a leading broadcaster and the aesthetic design.

Kerrang! UK-Based MagazineBirmingham , UK

“Kerrang! is a UK-based magazine devoted to rock music, currently published by Hamburg based Bauer Media Group. It was first published on 6 June 1981 as a one-off supplement in the Sounds newspaper. Named after the onomatopoeic word that derives from the sound made when playing a power chord on a distorted electric guitar, Kerrang! was initially devoted to the new wave of British heavy metal and the rise of hard rock acts.[2] In the early 2000s it became the best-selling British music newspaper”.

Studio Designers : Veale AssociatesProject : Refurbishment of recording studioUse : Commercial recordingLocation : 59 Dean St, London, W1D 6AN, UKArea : 93.0 sqm Project Year : 2011Photographs : Mike BanksContractor : Transmation

The historic studios of Tony Visconti, “The Good Earth”, were bought back to life in just 6 weeks, redesigning and refurbishing the main studio with a contemporary warm feel for the new owner Suzanne Lee-Barnes.

The main studio refurbishment included the wall coverings and adding metallic laminate accents to give a modern look in keeping with modern trends. The modern feel continued with a real oak floor and the use of illuminating star cloth completed the effect on the ceiling.

The control room also received an update with state of the art equipment that included an SSL Duality. The large feature window used for visual communication between engineers and artists in the control and recording studios had significant bleed issues and new improved glazing was installed. Over the last few decades the venue has been used by many artists including James Arthur, Mark Ronson, A$AP Rocky, Lady Gaga, The Strypes, Skullcandy, Mr Hudson, The Weekend, Tom Odell, SBTV, Ed Sheeran, Paul Weller, Paloma Faith, Florence + The Machine, Plan B, Kelly Rowland, Noel Gallagher, Miles Kane & The Wanted and Adele.

“The live room itself was designed by world famous Eddie Veale and his daughter Eloise. The acoustics are stun-ning and the addition of the booth facilitates many interesting combinations of live recording and tracking.”

TECHNICOLORQuality control and distribution

Studio Designers : Veale AssociatesProject : Acoustic TreatmentsUse : TV Transmission ServicesLocation : Chiswick Park, London W4 5YA,United Kingdom Area : 416.0 sqm Project Year : 2008Photographs : Gilead LimorContractor : Matrix Interior Systems

The worldwide technology leader in media and entertainment, Technicolor, appointed Veale Associates to remedy an acoustic problem in their London TV transmission suite. The problem was too much reverberation that affected the listening conditions and caused unwanted sound spill to adjacent operators. A solution for the main area was created by blade diffusers located directly above the consoles in each area and a RPG diffuser on the glass partition to the lift landing. The ceiling suspended modules are based upon the shape, size and profile of the console, having a sharp front edge and increasing at the back (to a wedge shape) installed above each console cluster. The front edge was kept as thin as practicable to create a “blade” profile. The top and bottom of the blades modified the room reflections providing some acoustic absorption from their diffusive effect, whist their absorptive top reduced the free energy within the space.

A design challenge was fixing the blades to a metal suspended ceiling and navigating the congested services within the ceiling void. Access was limited and inconvenience to operators had to be kept to a minimum. To overcome this the design included a tubular bar suspension that minimised the number of fixings required into the concrete soffit and aided alignment of the blades.
