Many exciting things are happening at VCDS! At the beginning of this year, I challenged our community of readers to explore opportunities for VCDS to better serve our community. You responded with positive ideas and as a result VCDS is exploring a veterans’ program, a restorative justice program, a commercial landlord/tenant program, as well as implementation of more comprehensive family law services. We are also happy to announce the addition of two new members to our board of directors. The first is Judge Dave Long (Ret.) who has been a staunch advocate and supporter of VCDS services both on and off the bench. The second is Matt Bennett, a licensed marriage and family therapist, who has been involved in our training committee and has helped expand our scope of services to the behavioral sciences community. In addition to that, we have some great programs on the calendar. On Saturday April 21st, we have our annual ADR conference which has been dubbed “OCCUPY CAMARILLO”. It will touch on a variety of intriguing ADR topics relating to wars, Wall Street, prisons, and spirituality. It promises to be an intriguing program and a great opportunity to meet and network with other professionals in the ADR community. Go to our website at www.vcds.bz to register. The second program is our mediator training which has been set for June 15, 16, 22, 23. If you know anyone who can benefit from the training or if you want a refresher, please visit our website or call the VCDS office. There are also sponsorship opportunities for the conference and the training available by calling our Executive Director, Sandra Rubio at 805-384-8595. And finally...VCDS is largely a volunteer organization and we are indebted to those who participate and give their time to help in the community. If you have the ability to volunteer in the Camarillo office to help with case intake and coordination, then the organization could really use your help. Many of us, including me, started out doing this. It’s a great way to practice your mediator skills in a low-stress way by dealing with clients over the phone. You also get the opportunity to observe in-office mediations. We are in need of both English and bilingual volunteers. I wish you happiness and good health and look forward to meeting you at the conference on the 21st and communicating with you again around the first week of July. Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’...

Your contribution of time and expertise

will help to make it memorable for all of

the participants, and you will be helping

to train the next generation of

mediators.

The PMJ is a unique opportunity for

students to develop and practice

conflict resolution skills. During the

Jamboree as we visit the scheduled

Ventura County schools, middle-

students will participate in role plays

where they will take on the role of

disputing parties as well as the role of

mediator, managing each stage of the

mediation from welcoming the parties to

writing the agreement.

This event will also recognize and award

the individual students and schools for

their dedication to peace and violence

prevention.

For more information and/or to volunteer, contact

Sandra Rubio at 805-384-1313 or [email protected]

Dear Colleagues: On Saturday, April 21st, we will be holding our 2012 annual conference for mediation professionals, “Occupy Camarillo: Mediating War for Peace”, hosted by VCDS and CSU Channel Islands Communications Program. Our theme for this year highlights that with many members of our society dissatisfied with the current economic and power structures, mediation can be an important tool in addressing conflicts arising out of social and economic equality.

We are excited and privileged to have as our keynote speaker, Laurel Greenspan Kaufer, the co-creator of an innovative program using mediation to transform a women’s prison. As you will see in the brochure, in our break-out sessions, the professionals joining us will offer a wonderful variety of both theoretical and practical topics and perspectives. Along with providing opportunities for education and discussion, one of our aims at this year’s conference is to consider innovative ways in which mediation could benefit our community and the nation.

Many of the participants from last year’s conference shared with us that they particularly enjoyed the opportunity to hear the perspectives of other members of the conflict management community. Often, being a mediator is a fairly solitary pursuit and part of our mission in hosting this conference is to provide an opportunity for all of us to share opinions and experiences with each other. In doing so, we hope to develop new perspectives. Most of all, at this conference, we hope that our participants will benefit from a day of sharing knowledge and skills. We feel confident that attending the conference will give you a renewed zeal for mediation and a novel insight into how it can profit the community you serve. We hope you will join us.
