Whilst we attempt to ensure the enclosed information is as reliable as possible all matters relating to motoring law, or any other legal / official matters should be pursued with the relevant legal authorities. We cannot accept any liability for loss or damage based on of the following advice as it is given in good faith only.

Dear Members,

Welcome to yet another club magazine. I’m pleased to say, the attendance levels at our monthly outings begins to improve, which only means one

thing, you all are enjoying them.

Our last outing, which took us all out to Manzoni, was

a well enjoyed day. Many thanks to the Tankards for hosting us, and also for cooking the bbq on their very

‘’small’’ bbq grill. Thanks to all those who helped cook something for the day.

You all will be very pleased to know, the club’s annual

run is our next major outing. Tremendous amounts of work has gone into preparations for this event, and I

am pleased to announce we have a main sponsor and co-sponsors on board, which has helped us immensely

in making this an affordable outing for all you members.

It’s so affordable………………………………….. IT’S FREE!

We have organised fuel, accommodation, meals, and wines for the weekend, all at no cost to you, if you

participate in your Vintage or Classic car that is. Lake Naivasha Sopa Resort has given us full board

accommodation for the weekend, and as is the case, numbers are limited, so please send in your

confirmations quickly and also give details of which car you will participate in. There will be a host of

goodies being given out, all with compliments from your Committee and sponsors.

Where will you ever get a free weekend, at a 5 star resort? So please hurry up.

Many thanks to Sopa Lodges (our main sponsor), Menengai Oil refineriesl Ltd, Vitafoam Products Ltd & Domaine Kenya Ltd. You all have greatly boosted our

efforts in reviving the annual run to its former glory.

Get those cars out and let’s go driving…….

Dear Members, Welcome to the September issue of the VCCCK eMag. In this month’s eMag, there is the international article on Mr Alexander Braunmuhl’s recent trip to India of which he kindly emailed me the full write-up and photos for the eMag. In the local section, there is the history of the East African Concours D’elegance as well as the VCCCK trip to Twiga Retreat, Maanzoni in the outings section. There’s also a new ‘test yourself’ question so please test your car knowledge and guess the car and model. Unfortunately, last month there were no correct answers and hence no winners. Lastly, this magazine is unfortunately going to be my last issue as the Club’s temporary editor. Due to University work during the day and on most evenings, I feel that I’m unable to give the club magazine the time it deserves

and have been unable to consistently send out monthly magazines. Raju has however found a replacement editor who will be handling both the magazines and the VCCCK website from next month. I would like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to do the magazine for a year and to all members who supported and sent in content and comments for and about the magazine. I really learned a lot during my term as temporary editor and would like to wish the new editor all the best.

Take care,

Karann

VCCCK Barbecue at Twiga Retreat, Maanzoni The VCCCK barbecue took place at Twiga Retreat in Maanzoni on the 16th of September.

Outings

Members started to arrive by around 12pm and after a few drinks, the barbecue was started off with bitings of nundu and sausages. The main menu consisted of pork chops, lamb chops, steak and chicken tikka which were prepared on the massive barbecue at Twiga Retreat.

All in all, the outing was well attended with around 30 members attending; it was a beautiful location and a big thank you to Steve Tankard and Kelly Tankard for kindly hosting the VCCCK at their amazing house and for organizing the barbecue.

On the occasion of the Annual General Meeting I had given VCCCK members a piece of my mind in criticising the prevailing lack of enthusiasm for owning, maintaining and, most importantly, using their classic cars (who of the readers has actually listen to it when Gary Farrant kindly read it out at the AGM on my behalf? Anyway, it is water under the bridge). In order to escape their wrath I went to India with my wife Carla to breathe some life into our Royal Enfield 350 Bullet motorcycle, which had been hibernating in New Delhi since the last trip in 2009. Royal Enfield may sound familiar to British arms and motorcycles buffs. In 1851 George Townsend set up a needle-making mill in Hunt End, England. In 1880 his son began producing bicycles. In 1893, after a merger of the Enfield Manufacturing Limited with the Royal Small Arms Company, the Royal Enfield Company is born and the slogan “made like a gun” created. In 1901 the first motorcycles is produced. In 1932 Royal Enfield christens its four-valve single-cylinder motorcycle Bullet and extends the advertising punch to “made like a gun, runs like a bullet. In 1949 the 350 ccm Bullet was launched in India, when Madras Motors won an order from the Indian army for the supply of motorcycles. The Madras Motor Company started off by receiving the Bullet in kits and simply assembling them. The Indian Army, however, the sole reason why the Enfield had been brought to India in the first place, insisted that they would continue doing business with Madras Motors only if the Bullet was produced indigenously. In 2005 Royal Enfield India celebrates 50 years of motorcycle production with the launch of the S5 Electra Bullet 350, which is our model.

Motoring in India

Right: In 1990 Enfield presented the model Taurus, the

first productionised Diesel motorcycle in the world with

a 345 cc Greaves Lombardini pumpset engine (see

www.royalenfield.com , it is worth it!).

From the year 2000 Royal Enfield produces the 325.00

ccm (19.83 cubic inches) Taurus Diesel model (Power:

6.50 HP (4.7 kW)) @ 3600 RPM, torque: 15.00 Nm (1.5

kgf-m or 11.1 ft.lbs) @ 2500 RPM, bore x stroke:78.0 x

68.0 mm (3.1 x 2.7 inches). A handful of craftsmen in

England, Germany and Austria sell Enfields with

Yanmar clone 406 cc, Italian Ruggerini 850 cc, a

German made 350cc direct injection HATZ 1B30 and a

Hatz 425 cc Diesel engines

m). Meanwhile Royal Enfield in Chennai is planning to

launch a new diesel models this year. Our “petrol

head” Electra with a big rear carrier was ready to roar

after a day’s work at the acclaimed fundi Bawa’s

workshop in Karol Bagh, which is the Mecca in New

Delhi for Enfield sales used and new, garages and

spare part shops.

Right and Below: Indian roads are awash

with a bevy of 125 and 150 ccm

motorcycles, namely Honda Hero

Splendor and Passion, Bajaj Chetak

scooter and other Indian made

Kawasaki, Suzuki and KTM models.

Surprisingly the ubiquitous boda boda

Bajaj Boxer of Kenyan fame does not

exist. Pillion riders as passengers are

called can be as many as five, not to

speak of chicken, sheep and goats.

Right and Next Page: In some

states like Madhyia Pradesh

one would find self-made

lorries. They are distinctly

folksy with their elementary

body and a Kirloskar

stationary Diesel engine.

Page 12: VCCCK eMag September 2012

12 www.vccck.org

Right: Speaking of trucks they are

longer than any I have seen

anywhere in the world, although I

cannot guarantee for the extra

inches of the coach by comparison

what we are used to.

Transport is full of surprises to say the

least.

Left: Another peculiar mean of

transport are camel-drawn carts.

In Rajasthan their owners groomed

adorn them thus adding a touch of

beauty to their sheer usefulness.

Page 13: VCCCK eMag September 2012

13 www.vccck.org

Above and Below Right: A final consideration of the roads, which we have been using for 1,550

km this year and many more in previous years: if the road network and the state of the roads

are at all indicative of the level of corruption, Kenya is head and shoulder above her big

brother out East. While there is a frenzy of the new economic powerhouse to build new roads,

the existing ones are fairly well maintained allowing for ‘plain sailing”, were it not for the

extremely intense traffic. And a final tribute shall go to the pesky horn blowing and the latest

Royal Enfield model in a Jaipur showroom.

Way back in the days of horse drawn carriages the French aristocracy paraded them in the parks of Paris during summer weekends and holidays. In the 17th Century this pastime became known as the Concours d’ Elegance (a gathering of elegance). In due course, carriages became museum pieces and the advent of the motor car brought a competitive edge to the Concours. Rival manufacturers vie with each other for prizes and the attention of potential buyers. Today, there are Concours d’ Elegance events around the world which attract owners of classic and vintage cars and motorcycles.

In Kenya, the Africa Concours d’ Elegance tradition has been maintained by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club. This country’s Concours is over 20 years younger than the event at the Pebble Beach in California. This is rated as “The most prestigious and varied event of its type in the world. The cars

are magnificent examples of the best from around the world”.

“Pebble” as insiders call the event is all about the style and history and most of “those who know” from the automobile industry make a point of being there. An auction of fine and rare cars is an important feature of the Pebble Beach Concours. At a recent event a 1933 Alfa Romeo Tipo 8C 2300 Spider was sold for 1.6 million dollars. Although the Concours at the Nairobi Racecourse is not in the same league as Pebble Beach, the organisers have achieved international status.

In the past, Kenya registered cars and motorcycles have been joined by entries from Australia, England, Germany, Mauritius, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Uganda. Among the noteworthy machines last year were seven cars made before 1940 including a 1934 Alvis Firefly and a 1926 Fiat. Competitors delight in driving their superbly prepared cars down the judging line in front of the

crowded Racecourse grand stands. The assessment process starts with a ramp and an inspection of the under-side. This is followed by separate checks on external finish, interiors and engines. Classes for motorcycles were introduced during the eighties, a step which widened the appeal of the Concours. The bikes are marked at the Racecourse parade ring and judging follows a similar pattern to the system used for cars.

A 1922 Hupmobile drives past spectators during the 2008 Schweppes Africa Concours d' Elegance vintage cars and

motorcycles show in Kenya's capital Nairobi on September 28, 2008

The oldest car in the CBA Africa Concours d’Elegance was this 1928 Ford Model A. The vintage Ford was prepared and entered by Phoenix Aviation who had the satisfaction of capturing the overall runner up award. The ancient Ford finished behind the Jaguar E Type of Matthias Koehler and ahead of Diccon Wilcock’s 1934 Rialton which was the top car last year.

Chill out Corner

A man was driving home late one afternoon, and he was driving above the speed limit. He notices a police car with its red lights on in his rear view mirror. He thinks "I can outrun this guy," so he floors it and the race is on. The cars are racing down the highway -- 60, 70, 80, 90 miles an hour. Finally, as his speedometer passes 100, the guy figures "what the heck," and gives up. He pulls over to the curb. The police officer gets out of his cruiser and approaches the car. He leans down and says "Listen mister, I've had a really lousy day, and I just want to go home. Give me a good excuse and I'll let you go." The man thought for a moment and said... "Three weeks ago, my wife ran off with a police officer. When I saw your cruiser in my rear view mirror, I thought that you were the officer and that you were trying to give her back to me!"
