VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 5

Section A: RepoRtS

President’s Report

I have the honour of presenting my second report as President of the VCA Umpires and Scorers’ Association Inc.

The 2016–17 season has been extremely successful. We took a large contingent to Adelaide to renew friendships with our South Australian colleagues, retaining the Crockett Shield in the 40th encounter between the two associations and returning the Butler Trophy to Victoria after an absence of 8 years. Our win in the Sunday Games Bonanza was only the second time we have lifted the trophy since its inception.

We began the season with the award of Life Membership to former President, Phil Shanahan at the 2016 Annual General Meeting. Phil’s long and dedicated service to the VCAUSA was applauded by his colleagues as he became the 54th umpire or scorer to receive Life Membership of the Association.

Your Committee of Management has worked throughout the season to ensure that our finances are in good order and we are well placed to host the South Australians in Melbourne in 2019. Indeed, planning for the defence of the Crockett Shield and Butler Trophy in April 2019 has already begun.

The Association has been well served by the Executive of the Committee of Management:

Gerry Schembri—who as Vice President and Social Organiser was responsible for the organisation and conduct of this season’s functions which included:

• the Cup Day barbecue at Northcote Cricket Club

• the dinner at Sabai Thai in Richmond for members held in conjunction with Umpiring Manager Richard Patterson hosting two New Zealand exchange visitors and those who umpired with them

• the theatre night to see My Fair Lady – with thanks to Trevor and Jill Finlayson

• the Melbourne University Cricket Club Business Breakfast

• the February Training and Development sausage sizzle – with thanks to John Collins and the Kingston Hawthorn Cricket Club

• the umpires and scorers’ tent at the Men’s First XI Grand Final – with thanks to Cricket Victoria and the Carlton Cricket Club

• the Annual Dinner and Presentation Night at the Veneto Club with one of our largest attendances

Gerry’s service to the Association was recognised at the Annual Dinner and Presentation Night when he was presented with the Robin Bailhache Commitment Award.

Dan Bomford—who is retiring from the role of Secretary after seven seasons. Dan had also been Secretary of the association from 1985 to 1988 and Treasurer from 1993 to 2003. His tireless service to members and his selfless dedication to the interests of the Association deserve the greatest thanks from the membership. Dan will continue as a member of the Committee of Management to support our incoming secretary.

6 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

Trevor Finlayson—who as Treasurer has worked diligently to guard our expenditure and budget for the future. As President from 2008 to 2013 and Treasurer for the past four seasons Trevor has always had the best interests of the membership in mind while performing his duties. Trevor has also been Law 43 editor and assisted at all Association functions and in the absence of a scorer member prepared to make the trip to Adelaide, Trevor again demonstrated his commitment by volunteering to score for the match.

The Committee of Management operated this season without a scorer member and it is hoped that we can attract a suitable candidate next season. Each member of the Committee of Management has assisted at, and supported, Association functions and events and has provided members with a means to voice their opinions on a range of issues affecting umpires and scorers. We thank them for their work on behalf of all members. Thanks to:

John Collins—Chef, initiator of the VCAUSA jackets and Adelaide 2017 attendee

Luke Edwards—Social Media officer, Crockett Shield 2017 and social match player

John Richards—Crockett Shield Selector, Vice-Captain, special comments “roaster” for the Crockett Shield 2017 team and co-organiser of our second annual match against the Mt Waverley Veterans

Glenn Schache—retiring from the Committee of Management, active helper and supporter at Association events, past player in the Crockett Shield – thank you for your commitment to the VCAUSA

Rob Sturgeon—retiring from the Committee or Management, co-organiser of our second match against his Mt Waverley Veterans and assisted at a variety of functions – thank you for your commitment to the VCAUSA

Tony Ventura—Crockett Shield Selector and social cricket organiser who arranged matches against the Australian Cricket Society and the Mt Waverley Veterans and active helper and supporter of Association functions

Special thanks are due to Sylvie Schembri, Bernadette Bomford, Jill Finlayson, Suzanne Collins, Jill Richards, Robbie Schache, Ruth Sturgeon, Teresa Ventura, Caroline Herft and Sue McCarthy for their attendance, work and support at numerous VCAUSA functions and events. The involvement of partners and families at Easter events is a major reason why the Crockett Shield has continued since 1931 and commemorates the fine work of past players, supporters and committees from both states. Indeed, our success in Adelaide in 2017 is very much due to the commitment of individuals and families who attended the weekend’s events culminating in the brilliant lifting of the Butler Trophy. A highlight of the Easter weekend was the group photograph taken at the Saturday Presentation Dinner with all Victorian attendees posing with the Crockett Shield.

The Association’s thanks are especially due to Damian and Caroline Herft. Damian has been photographing matches and events for the VCAUSA for some time and at Easter he was joined by Caroline. They photographed all events and captured players and participants throughout the weekend. Their photographs have been shared with our South Australian colleagues and friends and their support for the Easter weekend contributed greatly to the event.

The ongoing work of our Badges and Accessories Officer Glenn Cumming, Miscellaneous Appointments Officer Darrell Holt and Historian Bill Ellemor has ensured that items of memorabilia are available for presentation to members and exchange visitors, the VCAUSA provides additional umpiring opportunities for members and our history is recorded and analysed for future generations of umpires and scorers. Glenn Cumming looks after our medals and clothing and came to Adelaide 2017 as the reserve Victorian umpire. Bill Ellemor provides milestone and life member certificates. The painstaking research of Bill Ellemor and his South Australian counterpart, Kristen Thomas recently uncovered two errors in the recording of Crockett Shield winners. These errors have been rectified. Darrell Holt has looked after appointments to many outside competitions and all members are encouraged to contact Darrell to take up any available appointments.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 7

This season we again asked Premier Clubs to nominate a scorer from their club who has contributed to scoring generally, their club, cricket overall and the work of the VCAUSA. For the first time the Committee of Management asked all Victorian Women’s Premier Clubs to also acknowledge a scorer. The Committee received some nominations and we were very pleased to award the Cameron Medal to Alan Britton of the Monash Tigers Cricket Club. Alan has worked his way up from scoreboard attendant at Punt Road to 2nd XI scorer. He has also scored for VCAUSA matches and supported events and functions.

The Committee of Management has already appointed an Easter sub-committee to plan the visit of SACUSA to Melbourne in 2019 and they will research ground, accommodation and function locations. We will be travelling to Penola in June 2018 for a joint meeting with the SACUSA committee to update them on our progress.

On behalf of the members of the VCAUSA I wish to thank Cricket Victoria Umpiring Manager, Richard Patterson and his support staff, Alan Hale. Richard has supported the VCAUSA by meeting with the President twice through the season; allowing the Vice President to recruit new panel members; giving us time to present milestone certificates and advertise events at Training and Development nights; penning articles for Law 43 and our annual report; hosting the VCAUSA’s February sausage sizzle; joining with our members at a welcome dinner for visiting overseas umpires; facilitating a tent for the 1st XI Men’s Grand Final; and presenting awards at our Annual Presentation Dinner. The continued support of Cricket Victoria Umpiring Department contributes to the success of the VCAUSA and supports umpire exchanges with Auckland, Christchurch and Adelaide. We have begun discussions with SACUSA about exchanging a Victorian and South Australian scorer during the season for the mutual benefit of both Associations.

Congratulations to all umpires and scorers who have achieved success this season by participating in finals, First Class and representative matches and winning awards. We are all involved in the game of cricket because we love it. The game is a great leveller and teaches us about life. Most importantly, if we are still standing and still counting runs then we are still alive – that is an achievement in itself.

We look forward to your support in the season to come and thank you for your contribution to umpiring and scoring in Victoria. If cricket is to continue to grow it needs all of us.

Alan McCarthy

8 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

Secretary’s Report

2016–17 has been a most successful season, and indicative especially through the relations with Cricket Victoria via Cricket Manager Richard Patterson.

It appears to be a natural consequence that all umpires and scorers are very well treated at matches, and I am particularly grateful for Richard’s influence in this regard.

While attendances at most events were slightly up (Melbourne Cup Day, Annual Presentation Dinner, restaurant night), the numbers of Vics travelling to SA for Easter 2017 was about the most I have seen.

Our relations with the SACUSA continue to blossom, again following the interactions of both Association committees. Ready access to communication methods and the way in which we embrace those quick and smooth methods mean that communication across borders has improved markedly over the years. Thanks to SACUSA Committee and colleagues and partners for your friendship and willingness to develop relations.

My thanks go to photographers David Meagher, Damian Herft, Trevor Finlayson, Lynton Donisthorpe, Richard Patterson, Ron Birch and Gerry Schembri for their willingness to take photos at various events and cricket finals. Their work enhances the written word in this Report, our Law 43 and the website.

My thanks also go to those who have contributed to this Annual Report and other Association reports and documents with narrative, statistics etc.

Well done and thanks to Committee members and VCAUSA office bearers for their contributions throughout the year, and thanks to their partners and families for allowing them time and space to contribute to the VCAUSA. Our Association would be the richer for having a scorer on our Committee, who could also contribute to this Annual Report.

My specific thanks to Cricket Victoria’s Peter Binns, Richard Patterson and Alan Hale. Peter, Richard and Alan are always willing to provide myself and the VCAUSA with whatever we need—annual statistics for this report, access to facilities to conduct a meeting, facilities for a barbecue or tent at the First XI Final, printing of Law 43, promotion of an Association event, an agenda place at T&D to announce milestones etc.

Thanks to Alan McCarthy, Gerry Schembri and Trevor Finlayson for their leadership and wise counsel, and for welcoming the Committee into their homes for meetings. Thanks also to their partners for their warm friendships (and suppers).

My special thanks to my very good friend Bill Ellemor who contributes much to this Annual Report. It is a fine production, due to the content from a range of resources and to Bill’s time, effort and expertise to bring that all together.

Thanks to VCAUSA members and Cricket Victoria umpire and scorer colleagues who support our Association in many ways—attending events, reading Law 43, encouraging words, posing for photos etc.

There’s still space for improvement but the Association is in its best position for some time.

Dan Bomford

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 9

Treasurer’s Report

It is my pleasure to present the financial report and associated statements for the year ended 30th April 2017, on behalf of the Committee of Management.

As of this date the Association’s cash funds totalled $15,481.02 which, when coupled with the value of Stock on Hand and the depreciated value of Items of Equipment, resulted in the Net Assets figure of $18,892.55. The details of our cash funds as set out in the subsequent financial summary, are a CBA Cash Account (No. 00915097) of $1,199.13, a Bendigo Bank Account (No. 156125593) of $4,579.21 and an Investment Deposit with the Uniting Church Ethical Enhancement Cash Trust (ARSN 610 022 985) of $9,702.68. This Uniting Church account remains the most effective investment method for our Association in that the money remains readily available as required but at the same time accrues interest at better than bank interest. As from August 2016, the interest rate offered by the Uniting Church was reduced to 2.4%, still better than one could achieve with any bank cash account and even better than could be achieved with most bank term deposits. As has been done in recent years, any excess funds in our normal operating accounts will be transferred to this investment account for the off-season.

Overall, for the financial year we recorded a deficit of $184.95 (compared with a net deficit of $2,123.22 for the previous financial year) although on account of the timing of the 2017 Annual Dinner and Presentation Night (19th May 2017), a considerable proportion of members’ payments for this event have been made prior to 30th April 2017 whereas there has only been $200.00 in expenses, this being the deposit for the venue (The Veneto Club) which had to be paid at the time of making the booking. Memberships have been maintained at a reasonable level with the figure of 86 members (5 Associate, 6 Scorer, 60 Umpire and 15 Non-paying Life). Membership subscriptions for the year totalled $7,920 compared to $7,590 in 2015–16, although it must be noted that membership fees were increased to $120 for an Umpire and $60 for Scorer and Associate Members, as the result of a motion at the 2016 Annual General Meeting.

Financial returns to members (in some cases to all CV Panel Umpires and in some cases to their partners and/or families) during this financial year were: the Cup-Day BBQ to welcome new members, held at the Northcote Cricket Club in November, 2016 ($869.87); a restaurant night at the Thai Gardens in January 2017 ($133.00); the annual Melbourne University Business Breakfast in February 2017 ($310.00); two social cricket matches (vs Australian Cricket Society in December 2016 and Mount Waverley Veterans CC in March 2017 ($370.00); the now annual sausage sizzle in conjunction with the February CV Training and Development Meeting ($120.75); the CV Grand Final Tent, at Carlton CC, although this year limited to the supply of drinks and nibbles only ($64.47); a theatre night (My Fair Lady in June 2017) ($130.00); and the Biennial Easter Exchange with SACUSA in Adelaide ($4,296.44)—in total $6,294.53. There will of course be a substantial contribution to members and partners in relation to the Annual Dinner & Presentation which, for this past season, occurs in the next financial year.

The Annual Consumer Affairs Victoria registration fee for incorporation, amounted to $55.80.

In accord with our Rules of Incorporation, there is no need for the Association accounts to be audited, but I can report that your Committee of Management has accepted the regular Financial Reports tabled at each of its meetings throughout this past financial year.

Notes to Financial Statements

1. Statement of Accounting Polices

(a) Financial reporting framework: This financial report has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the VCAUSA as an incorporated society, namely that on a regular basis throughout the financial year, a current Treasurer’s Report should be presented to each meeting of the Association Committee of Management and accepted by that Committee as a true and correct record of the finances of the Association at that time. This procedure has been followed throughout the financial year, 2016–17, during which time Committee of Management meetings were held in June, October and December 2016 and January, February and March 2017. In addition, a further Treasurer’s Report was prepared as at 30th April 2017 and sent to the Committee of

Management. This Treasurer’s Report was also approved by the Committee of Management.

(b) Income Tax: Income Tax has not been provided for in the financial statements of the VCAUSA, as it is an exempt sporting organisation in accordance with Section 50–45 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.

(c) Equipment: Equipment is carried at cost, less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation or amortisation. Badges and Accessories

A total of 79 items (including 38 bottles of port) were sold during the season with $444.00 banked. Additional stocks of the VCAUSA polo shirts in the more popular sizes were purchased during the season.

Two centenary polo shirts and two ties were provided as gifts to the visiting NZ umpires. Other items were used as presentations to umpires achieving major milestones and as prizes at the Easter event.

The VCAUSA continues to hold large stocks of jumpers (both blue and cream), chambray shirts and bottles of port, although these stocks are slowly being whittled away. Efforts will again be made during the coming season to sell as much of the old stock as possible.

My thanks to the VCAUSA Committee, especially Trevor Finlayson and Gerry Schembri, for their advice and guidance.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 15

Social Report

An important aspect of VCAUSA membership is meeting with fellow umpire and scorer colleagues and their family members outside of formal Cricket Victoria matches and training sessions.

During the 2016–17 season, the Committee of Management again agreed to organise various low cost social events in an attempt to give value to members and in the process promote fellowship amongst our umpiring and scoring membership. With the growing demands of umpiring commitments during the season it is becoming more of a challenge each year to encourage participants to attend organised social activities and events.

The social calendar began with the traditional free Melbourne Cup Day BBQ held this year at the Northcote Cricket social clubrooms due to the groundworks at Carlton. The 39 people who attended had an entertaining afternoon with cup sweeps, cricket conversations and plenty of food and drink the order of the day. Many thanks to those ladies who provided the nibbles, salads, bread, deserts and fruit platters etc. I would like to especially acknowledge the assistance provided by Shane Herbert, long time scorer at Northcote CC in helping us to secure the venue. Finding a reasonably priced venue with a liquor licence and all the necessary equipment is an ongoing challenge for us.

In January, a group of 22 VCAUSA members joined with a special group of umpires sponsored by Richard Patterson to attend Sabai Thai in Richmond. This group included New Zealand exchange umpires John Bromley and Fidel Jaary who each received a welcome pack from VCAUSA president, Alan McCarthy.

In February, a group of 12 umpires and scorers filled a table at the annual Melbourne University CC Business Breakfast held at the RACV Club in Bourke Street, Melbourne where the guest speakers were James Sutherland, Justin Langer and Jason “Dizzy” Gillespie. Both of these social events were again subsidised by the VCAUSA. Also in February the VCAUSA again organised a free sausage sizzle evening prior to the CV Training & Development meeting and photo session held at the Kingston Hawks clubrooms at Parkdale.

The umpires and scorer’s tent, a joint initiative of Richard Patterson and the VCAUSA, was again held on the Saturday of the men’s First XI Grand Final. Due to the Junction Oval redevelopment, this year the Grand Final was held at Carlton, where a smaller group of members attended with nibbles provided by the VCAUSA.

Our flagship social event, the biennial Easter Exchange between the VCAUSA and SACUSA was held over the Easter period, 14th to 17th April 2017 and is dealt with separately in this year’s annual report.

Because of Easter, our annual End of Season Presentation Night Dinner was held later than usual, on 19th May 2017. Our venue was again the Veneto Club in Bulleen where 60 people attended and a three course buffet dinner was served. The guest speaker this year was current Cricket Victoria board member, Tim Considine who spoke about recent cricket developments and the new Junction Oval Cricket Community Centre. A great night was enjoyed by all those who attended and congratulations are extended to all the award recipients.

I should also note that on 21st June 2017, a small group of members attended the theatre production of My Fair Lady, an event organised by Trevor Finlayson. I have not mentioned the two social cricket matches that occurred during the season as they will be covered elsewhere in this report.

Finally a special thank you to my wife, Sylvie for all her assistance in helping me organise this season’s social calendar.

16 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

Miscellaneous Appointments

The Association receives requests seeking umpires for matches. Most requests arise from regular schools’ clients from whom we have supplied umpires for many years.

Total umpires appointed reached 593—a big increase on previous seasons. Requests from schools ensure the peak load time occurs during October/November and February/March.

The bulk of requests originated from:

• Associated Catholic Colleges

• Association of Co-Educational Schools

• Crusaders Cricket (Schools program, Foundation and Veterans)

• Eltham College

• Oblate Interstate Carnival (via Mazenod College)

• MCC Club XI

• School Sports Victoria

• Scotch College interstate Carnival.

Most appointments are for mid-week matches, but we also filled all umpire appointments for the MCC Club XI Competition played on weekends. MCC Club XI required 11 umpires each round.

Crusaders Cricket has also moved to playing a number of their youth Foundation Program matches on Sundays. Increased weekend fixtures creates some difficulties as almost all available umpires are committed to their regular umpires’ Association.

Assistance from a small group of umpires from the Cricket Victoria panel was appreciated. It is however necessary to secure the services of many competent umpires from other Metropolitan Cricket Associations to fill all appointments. These included former members of the CV Panel.

Rain caused some abandonment of some matches, but “global warming” disappeared during the 2016/17 season and negligible days were subjected to “heat policies” rules.

John Collins and Eric Kelly officiated in the four day match Crusaders vs CV Academy. September rain reduced the five day Crusaders Foundation tour of Northern Victoria to just two days play.

Several of our clients sought advice on improving the Playing Rules for their games.

The professionalism by all appointed umpires within the Miscellaneous Appointments program contributed to the many appreciative reports received from our clients—in particular, Mazenod College and Scotch College for umpires of their respective interstate carnivals. Michelle Sheehan, our largest client (Association of Co-Educational Schools) always highlights the performances of “our cricket umpires”.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 17

Law 43

It is my pleasure to present this report to the Association.

Volume 23 of Law 43 for the 2016–17 season comprised seven issues commencing with the September issue, including a combined January/February issue and ending with a special issue published to coincide with the Biennial Easter Event in Adelaide. As was the case for 2015–16, each of these issues was published as an email attachment one day or so prior to the respective CV Training and Development (T&D) night, with only a required minimum of about 10 hard copies being printed and posted to those members who do not have email or who specifically requested a hard copy. Each issue was emailed to the whole of the CV Panel by Umpiring Manager, Richard Patterson, while issues were either emailed or posted to all other Association members by our Honorary Secretary, Dan Bomford. Sincere thanks to Richard for this distribution and the printing of the hard copies requested by some of our members. Several hard copies of the special Easter Issue were also taken to Adelaide and made available to our South Australian colleagues.

The introduction to new panel members via the publication of a short “bio” from each of them, again served a useful purpose and thanks to each of them for their contributions. I must acknowledge the various authors of both the regular columns and the occasional articles which I received throughout the season. Again the regular column,

“From the President” was shared between President, Alan McCarthy and Vice-President, Gerry Schembri, on an alternating basis. In what has been a fairly difficult season for our Umpiring Manager, Richard Patterson, given the unavailability of a regular venue for monthly Training and Development meetings, he has used his column to good effect with various items concerning panel membership and expectations thereof. One hopes that the maintenance of the column entitled, “Planning for the 2017 Crockett Shield – The Mission Continues” has been appreciated by readers, and I am grateful to Alan McCarthy for his reports on our two social cricket matches, to Chris Allan for informing us about Cricket Willow and its association with the Crockett Shield, to Bill Ellemor for correcting some Crockett Shield statistics and, in the special Easter Issue, to SACUSA Historian, Kristen Thomas, for her most enlightening article on the Crockett Shield History. Alan McCarthy also maintained the column, “Macca’s Book Review,” with a review in each of the seven issues, on the basis of his regular reading. One hopes that this column might continue and it would be good to receive reviews from other book readers for next season’s issues.

Occasional articles were received from Paul Welbourn on Darrell Holt’s 600th game, from Phil Gillespie on his Matador Cup experiences, from Tim Wendelken concerning cricket in Korea following his visit there during the Christmas break, from Eric Kelly on the famous Gray Nicholls Scoop, from Daryl Brigham on the National Under 19 Carnival and from Michael Nolan on the Handled the Ball incident in a 3rd Grade Preliminary Final. All these articles made for interesting reading and I am grateful to their respective authors.

I should comment specifically on Volume 23, Issue 1, in September, 2016, which I called “The Holiday Issue” for which Darrell & Heather Holt, Sandra & Eric Kelly, Richard, Leanne and Jessica Patterson and Jill and I, provided interesting tales from recent, respective, overseas holidays. I propose to continue this column in the first issue for next season so I should be pleased to receive holiday tales from any member who would like to offer them for publication.

Finally, I am grateful to Darrell Holt for continually forwarding to me the cricket newsletter, Playing the Game, from which interesting items can be reproduced.

Following the production of each issue, the relevant file has been immediately available on the Association website, thanks to Gerry Schembri. While I have no knowledge of the readership of the web-based copy, it would be nice to think that this outlet gives our Association some additional exposure to an anonymous readership interested in aspects of cricket both in Victoria and elsewhere.

Season 2016–17 saw a few ups and downs in the VCAUSA Social Media world.

Gerry Schembri has again done an amazing job in maintaining and keeping our website as up to date as possible for our members. During the last offseason, Gerry was able increase our allocation of data for our website, allowing us to keep content for longer. If you do have a chance, please take the time to go and have a look.

Our Facebook Page has progressed to 301 people liking our page and as mentioned in previous years, these range from people not only within our own ranks, but umpires from other States and from some of our local club competitions. We struggled a little bit this year gathering information for certain events, appointment and milestones that we’ve highlight on our page in the past. In previous years, we were able to catch up and gather a lot of our content at our monthly T&D sessions however due to the Junction Oval redevelopment, these sessions didn’t take place all that often. Moving forward into next season, we might look at compiling a list of all things we want to publish on a page as a lot of events and appointments are repetitious, then actively go out and seek that information. If we haven’t heard about it, we can expect that not many others have either.

Last year we launched the VCAUSA Twitter account and since the departure of Kaitlyn Abrahall, no progress has been made. We currently sit at 21 people following us, the same as last year. With limited knowledge and usage of Twitter within our Committee of Management, we may need to look at our membership and try to find someone who is willing to take over this responsibility. Similar to Facebook and moving forward with Twitter, we may need to look a compiling a list of things we would like to publish annually on our Twitter feed.

I would like to finish by thanking all of those people who have contributed and provided photos for us to use throughout the year—a special mention to our VCAUSA photographer Damian Herft. I would also like to thank Gerry Schembri for all his hard work and effort on the website this past season.

20 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

VCAUSA History

In my role as researcher of Association history and keeper of our records, this year was significant as it unearthed new information about a vital part of our history—the Easter Exchanges with South Australia. I wrote an article for the March edition of Law 43 detailing this, so do not intend to go over it again here, but rather summarise the key points of our history that became clearer in the process.

We now know much more about the pre-war matches than we did previously—

1. The newspaper cutting previously thought to be a match report of the 1949 match is in fact of the 1936 match

2. We can be fairly certain that the undated “Healesville article” concerns the 1937 match

3. We found on Trove a previously unknown news report of the 1939 match

We also now know less about the early post-war matches than we thought we knew. The only information we are currently aware of about the 1947, 1949, 1951 matches is the engraving on the Shield itself. However we can now be certain that winners of the early matches were:  1931—drawn; 1936, 1937, 1939, 1947—SA; 1949—Vic; 1951—SA. We have also been able to add the names of two other umpires of these matches, C.W. Walker and R.M. Hamence, both South Australians, who umpired the 1939 match.

In view of the above it is possible to piece together a likely scenario as to how the biennial exchange programme came into being. As we now know, the first exchange took place in 1931—a visit by SA umpires to play a match in Melbourne. An article uncovered in 2016 from The Advertiser, 11 April 1936, talks of the impending visit to Adelaide of “15 umpires from Melbourne” as “reciprocating a visit paid to Melbourne five years ago”. Although it took five years for the first return match to come about we can assume that this visit was deemed so successful that a further return match was soon arranged for the following year. It appears that the concept of a making it a biennial exchange was born during this visit, The Advertiser reporting that: “SA Manager, (Mr Geo. Carr) said that the trip was such a happy one that he hoped that an interchange of visits would take place every two years”.

This idea was obviously taken up as the next exchange indeed took place two years later, in 1939. With this mindset in place it is easy to come to a conclusion that when the war ended there was a determination to resume, together with a desire to formalise the exchanges by instituting a trophy. Thus the first match contested for the Crockett Shield was the resumption match in 1947. Seventy years later we have now contested 40 matches in all.

Cricket Victoria Umpiring Manager

Premier CricketThere were nine new and one returning umpires invited to join the CV Premier Cricket Umpires’ Panel for the 2016–17 season which brought our number of umpires for the season to 100.

Our other new member to the Cricket Victoria Umpire Department was Alan Hale. Alan began work in August of 2016 and soon became an integral member of the department (which is now two).

As per previous years there were some availability issues that impacted upon the appointments, however even with Cricket Australia appointments and these availability issues we were able to cover all matches with two umpires from within the CV Panel.

Several members stood in two games per week to assist in the coverage of all games and their assistance is greatly appreciated.

For the first time we assisted the new Cricket Southern Bayside competition with umpires when we were able to. This meant that members who were not appointed to CV matches were able to officiate in other games. We also assisted the AGS competition again with umpires.

MyCricket was again used for the administration of the Umpiring Panel. The information captured on MyCricket provided data for weekly Umpire Manager coaching comments and end of season reviews.

These reviews reflected the Captains assessments and comments along with details of games umpired for the year and an overall total of matches officiated in each grade.

The Mentor panel was again in full use this season. The panel which consisted of Darrell Holt, Eric Kelly, Russell Turner, John Collins, Colin Hall, Dennis Garde, Paul Baleisa, Graeme Lloyd and newcomer Trevor Finlayson provided positive feedback to their partners during the year. The feedback was provided individually and detailed reports were submitted to the Umpiring Department after each match.

The practice of selection on merit continued during this season. There was significant movement within the panels this season and this required to continually refresh our Umpiring Panel.

Of the new umpires appointed this year eight were appointed to Finals Panels and four new member went on to officiate in Grand Finals across all grades.

During the season three members, Luke Edwards, Mark Malmberg and Matt Robertson debuted in the first eleven.

Congratulations to Eric Kelly, who received the Service to Umpiring recognition at the Premier Cricket Awards.

22 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

National Umpiring PanelCricket Australia selected the following Victorian umpires to the National Umpiring Panel this season: Ash Barrow, Shawn Craig, Geoff Joshua, John Ward and Phil Gillespie stood in multiple First Class matches as well as Matador Cup and KFC Big Bash League.

Geoff Joshua was appointed as 3rd umpire for both the Matador Finals.

Cricket Victoria nominated a four-man “State Panel” comprising of David Shepard, Dale Ireland, Stephen Brne and Daryl Brigham who were all selected across Toyota Futures League, WNCL and WBBL matches. They also completed duties as 4th umpire at Melbourne-based KFC Big Bash League matches.

David Shepard, Stephen Brne, Dale Ireland and Daryl Brigham also attended the U19 National Championships in Adelaide.

Greg Azzopardi and Luke Edwards represented Victoria at the U18 Female Championships and U15 School Championships respectively.

New Zealand ExchangeGaurav Bawa and Matt Cervetto represented Cricket Victoria in Christchurch and Auckland respectively. It is expected that both umpires will benefit from the experience in the seasons to come.

In exchange, John Bromley and Fidel Jaary both performed well in the matches they were appointed to including Premier Cricket and Junior State Championship fixtures.

Cricket Victoria Panel Training and DevelopmentA number of training and development nights were held throughout the season with the sessions focusing on Premier Cricket and matters arising from matches.

Along with the personal development of umpires there was training on the specific demands of the various forms of matches played within CV.

Unfortunately due to the Junction Oval not being available we had to travel to Bundoora and Parkdale for our meetings. This was obviously not ideal, however once the Junction comes back on line in the early new year (2018) we will be, again, holding our meeting there.

VCAUSAOnce again the VCAUSA cooked up a storm on the BBQ at the February meeting. The Masterchefs once again cooked approximately 200 sausages for all.

The Grand Final tent was again in operation at the men’s 1st eleven Grand Final. It was disappointing that there were only a few umpires in attendance. This could have been due to the final being held at Carlton. With the move back to Junction Oval next year I hope that it will be well attended again.

The continued relationship which CV has with the VCAUSA is certainly appreciated by myself and I enjoy working with Alan and the committee of the VCAUSA.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 23

Winter Umpiring ClassesThe classes continue to be successful with good numbers at all venues. The classes are the most productive recruiting ground for umpires with interested people directed to competitions around metropolitan Melbourne. There were approximately seventy prospective umpires introduced to other associations prior to and during the season.

Seminar in September (SINS)A two day Umpires’ Seminar was conducted at Cricket Victoria and Holmesglen in late September.

The opening day was for the new umpires to the CV Premier Cricket Panel and covered administrative issues and outline expectations. The second day was used for the full CV Premier Panel.

Country LecturesCountry lectures were held at Leongatha and Warrnambool after being offered to all regions.

The sessions held were tailored to the host associations and they covered topics such as the changes to the Laws of Cricket and umpiring techniques.

Several visits were made to metropolitan associations and they covered topics such as law changes and techniques.

CA National Umpires AccreditationDuring the period August 2016 to April 2017 an audit was undertaken by Alan Hale to ascertain how many umpires were actually accredited in Victoria and which Association they currently umpire with. This was a mammoth undertaking and Alan has completed this task. The Audit presented the following figures:

• Umpires registered in Victoria (taken from MyCricket): 2872

• Representative accredited umpires: 866

• Community accredited umpires: 558

• Unaccredited umpires: 1448*

*A number of these umpires may be accredited as Community or Representative but have not been identified as yet in the audit.

Accreditation continues to be well accepted throughout the State and the Cricket Victoria Board and Premier Cricket Management Team fully support the accreditation process and it remains mandatory for CV Panel Umpires.

New Zealand Exchange

Melbourne Exchange – from Auckland

On a Friday 13th Jan 2017 on a rainy day I arrived in Melbourne for the start of my exchange which will last till the 22nd Jan 2017, greeted on arrival by Richard Patterson. During the ride to the hotel I was provided with valuable information and some iconic views of Melbourne city. I was checked into my hotel after Richard had sorted and provided me with my umpiring gear. John and I had the opportunity to visit the CBD and exploit the down town for several purposes, food, shopping etc.

The forecast for Saturday for my two-day game with my colleague Scott Olufson between Melbourne Cricket Club and Kingston Hawthorn was a good one, the Ground (Albert Park) as below.

The ground was superb; the game was of a very high standard in terms of discipline, play and competitiveness. MCC won the toss and elected to field. Kingston were all out for 135, MCC were 125 for 5 at the end of day one, and the club house was very hospitable and excellent in providing lunch and tea.

On the second day, MCC continued batting, scored an additional 150 runs and declared on 275 for 7. Kingston’s second inning started and they went on to score 250. It was decided to call the rest of the remaining overs off as both teams reached the conclusion that no further play was required.

Because Sunday was a rest day, Richard kindly provided tickets to MCG for the ODI between Australia and Pakistan. John and I went and had a fantastic day at the MCG, though the results didn’t go Australia way, with Pakistan winning that ODI.

I was picked up on the morning of Monday 16th Jan 2017 for a U16 one-day game between Barwon and Metro North West at Princes Park. My partner, Darrell Holt, was very experienced and friendly. The game was scheduled to start one hour earlier to cater for the heat, at 9:30am rather than 10:30am. The game was great and of high standard, the weather very pleasant, and both teams produced a very competitive and excellent cricket.

On Tuesday morning, I was appointed with Bill Sheahan for U16 between Central Highlands and Metro West at Merv Hughes Oval.

The day was very hot and temperature was expected to reach 38 deg. It was decided to start the game one hour earlier at 9:30am and two water drinks breaks were provided to cater for the heat. Although both teams produced a high level of cricket and competitiveness, Central Highlands were the winners on the day for their excellent bowling and batting.

On Tuesday night, I went to see the Big Bash game between Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heats, which ended in the Stars losing the game. Regardless, MCG put on a great show on the night highlighting what a wonderful ground and stadium MCG is. Wednesday and Friday 18th &and 20th Jan 2017 respectively were rest days.

Thursday 19th Jan 2017 was U14 one-day game day. The game was at Watson Park between Metro Northern and Mallee Murray. The weather was superb, the ground was great, and both teams played to their best and produced excellent cricket.

Richard Patterson and VCAUSA had organised a farewell dinner at Sabai Thai for umpires who umpired with me and John in addition to other members of VCAUSA who were available to come and join in that memorable evening.

Following the second day of the game between Melbourne CC and Kingston Hawthorn, Stephen, John, and myself decided to go for a feed at the CBD beside the Yarra river. It was a great night.

On Sunday I caught a taxi back to the airport for my flight back to Auckland at 8:45am.

I would like to thank Richard for his continuous help and support and his dedication to provide excellent games and look after New Zealand umpires. I also would like to thank him for his hospitality and all clubs who made all games possible and provided facilities and food on the day.

I also would like to thank all the umpires I stood with, starting with awesome Scott Olufson, the friendly wonderful Darrell Holt, the great and calm Bill Sheahan and lastly the great Dario Licheni.

I also would like to thank Doug Cowie and the ACUSA Executives for selecting me and giving me the opportunity to experience other cricketing associations and meet other umpires.

Melbourne Exchange – from ChristchurchIn 2016 I was asked by Canterbury Regional Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association to participate in the annual exchange to Melbourne in conjunction with Cricket Victoria set for January 2017. This was a real privilege to be asked and one that I accepted accordingly.

I left NZ on Friday the 13th of January and was met by Richard Patterson and taken back to Cricket Victoria which is opposite the MCG. Richard took me across there for lunch and my first visit to this magnificent stadium.

Once we had completed lunch we returned to Cricket Victoria and completed the formalities for the next week including being issued the gear I was to umpire in.

From there Richard dropped me off at the Mantra St Kilda Hotel which is where I was based for the next eight days. This was a very nice hotel which was well served by the tram system which was easily accessible and simple to use which made accessing Melbourne a breeze.

Later that day I met Fidel from Auckland who was also on the exchange and we traded notes on playing conditions etc. We both had similar schedules over the week and this is detailed in the table below:

28 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

Saturday came around quickly enough. Stephen Brne picked me up from the hotel and we headed to Princes Park for my first taste of Premier Cricket in Melbourne which was played over two Saturdays. The day was fine and despite a rather wet section of outfield the game started on time. Not sure if this would have happened at home and all credit to both Carlton and St Kilda for their willingness to get underway.

Overall the day went well with St Kilda batting all day and finishing roughly on time. The only hiccup for the day was being issued a career limiting move (CLM) by Richard at lunch time regarding my bum bag. Richard, you will be happy to know I have invested in a nice smaller camera case (photo 1) that will grace my belt in the future. Hopefully I get the opportunity to show it off in Melbourne in the future.

The second day saw St Kilda bat on for a short period and then declaring leaving Carlton some 80+ overs to score 300+ runs. They were in trouble early and wickets kept falling at regular intervals and were finally out as the tea break came due. The game ended here with no further result available due to there only being two hours of play left.

The other three games (two under 16 and one under 14) were also very enjoyable. All three games were close particularly the one at Melbourne University which I did with Bill Sheahan. The talent across all these teams was impressive with a number of these lads destined for higher honours at some stage.

Besides the games being tight the other major highlight was the grounds I was allocated. To umpire on these grounds was a real treat topped off with excellent partners. The photo below is of the ground at Melbourne University. The facilities here were top class and the game also proved worthy of the facilities with it going down to the last ball and amazingly finishing 50 minutes early due to well coached and captained teams.

The ground at Camberwell was of equal standard. A WBBL game was held there a few weeks prior. The Tony Dodemaide Oval was also a good ground but not quite up to the standard of the other three which as explained earlier were exceptional.

The friendship and hospitality shown by the gentleman I stood with and Cricket Victoria was of an extremely high standard. A huge thanks to Richard and his team for this.

As per the itinerary there were ample days off to sightsee and enjoy Melbourne which as advertised is an amazing city and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. We (Fidel and I) were supplied tickets by Cricket Victoria to attend the ODI between Australia and Pakistan as well as the Big Bash game between the Melbourne Stars and the Brisbane Heat. Both were great experiences and not to be forgotten for a long time.

We also dined at some great restaurants culminating in a Cricket Victoria Umpires gathering. A very good night had by all. Thanks also to Steven for the two meals he organised to have with Fidel and I. The Italian meal in St Kilda was one to savour.

I have listed some of the benefits I took from the exchange. This is by no means all but some of the major ones:

1. Being out of your normal comfort zone – having to be adaptable

2. Different climate and a lot warmer at times

3. Studying up on new playing conditions for the various competitions (three in total). Made the mind think a little more over the next day’s play

4. Umpiring unfamiliar faces

5. Umpiring with people you had basically met at the ground. This was not a challenge at all as they were very accommodating and just very good at what they do. This is again a credit to Cricket Victoria’s planning and implementation of their umpiring program.

6. Umpiring in another country

If I was asked what went well it would be easier to reply with what went not so well. This could be summed up in one easy statement: “The CLM!” Other than that, all other facets of my umpiring went very well. When you have partners and venues as were provided it’s pretty hard to not be the best you can be.

In finishing I would like to thank all those involved in making this exchange happen and I hope that future recipients get as much as I did out of it and that it carries on for some time yet. I hope that one day I get to return some of the hospitality shown to me.

Many thanks from one very grateful umpire and all the best for the rest of the season.

Representative Experiences

Women’s Big Bash League, 2016–17 (WBBL02)Stephen Brne, David Shepard, Dale Ireland and I were fortunate to be appointed to officiate the Victorian fixtures of the WBBL02 season. I was appointed to five matches, four of them involving the Melbourne Renegades and the other the Melbourne Stars. I was lucky enough to umpire on Etihad Stadium and the MCG, along with a double header at Queen Elizabeth Park in Bendigo and one match at the refurbished Camberwell Sports Ground. There were highlights in each of these fixtures:

• Renegades v Hurricanes, 17 December

Hurricanes set the home team 134 to win. The Gades came up short, needing a boundary off the last ball to trigger a ‘super over’ and only managing a single. I said to Steve after the game that we might want to review the super over procedures given we nearly found ourselves in the thick of it. That did feel like homework, we concluded—surely this was as close as we’d get for the summer.

• Renegades v Hurricanes, 18 December

Hurricanes set the home team 122 to win after struggling through much of the innings to find the rope. A big last over by Amy Satterthwaite helped them get past a run-a-ball total. The Gades looked in control for most of the run chase, only for a couple of brain-fade run-outs in the last over resulting in the game finishing in a tie! The sizeable crowd at the game certainly enjoyed the prospect of witnessing a super over. Our match referee Richard Patterson then really earned his match fee! Questions left right and centre were fielded about the intricacies of the super over process. Steve and I were grateful for the two-way communication which enabled us to communicate with Richard and ensure the officiating team were all on the same page. In the end the Hurricanes won the super over after West Indian signing Hayley Matthews did some damage with the bat. It was a great way to finish a weekend that showcased the professionalism of WBBL to regional Victoria. I hope more regional games will be fixtured in seasons to come as the local crowd seemed to really enjoy the spectacle.

• Renegades v Scorchers, 29 December

The memory of this game was primarily the weather. The stadium roof was closed due to the prospect of a thunderstorm hitting town. This had the result of making the stadium feel like a gigantic steam room, as the outside temperature had been around 40 degrees the day before and humidity on the day must have been in the 90’s. Dale and I sweated up a storm and found the artificial light a challenge. The Scorchers proved too strong after Victorian Elyse Villani dominated their innings with 60 off 43 balls. Another highlight was a one-handed catch by Suzie Bates to dismiss Molly Strano. Another highlight for me was having my son in the crowd watching his old man on the big screen for the first time.

• Renegades v Scorchers, 4 January

This game was played in front of a healthy crowd at Camberwell. The conditions were absolutely perfect for T20 cricket. The Scorchers set a competitive total of 131 and looked to have the Gades under control for much of the run chase. That was until Grace Harris came to the crease and showed what a player she is. Grace was clearly batting in distress with her shoulder heavily taped (she had missed the previous game because of the shoulder). She grimaced each time she played a shot and played a few with basically one arm doing all the work. It highlighted to me the toughness in these athletes and the strain on their bodies that playing so many matches in a short period of time

Page 33: V.C.A. Umpires & Scorers’ Associationvcausa.vic.cricket.com.au/files/15551/files/VCAUSA Report... · 2017-08-14 · CV Finals – 2017 ... The Ian McGregor Medal ... and returning

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 31

would have. Grace hit 39 off 17 balls, included two sixes to get the Gades over the target score in the 19th over. The crowd really appreciated the quality of the contest.

• Stars v Strikers, 10 January

In the most one-sided of my matches, the Stars won in the 17th over after restricting the Strikers to 94 off their 20 overs. There were a couple of highlights and a lowlight. The lowlight was that Aussie skipper Meg Lanning was a late withdrawal from this game due to injury—I was looking forward to umpiring her for the first time. The highlights were the crowd and venue—being a double-header fixture I could really sense the crowd growing throughout the game. It was definitely the biggest crowd I’d umpired in front of and what better venue to do it—an experience I’ll never forget, and I guess a bit surreal in memory given the countless days I’ve spent as a young fella watching the action from the other side of the fence. The potential to umpire a game of any description on the G is no doubt one of the great perks of being a CV panel umpire. The other highlight was answering an enthusiastic LBW appeal on a hat-trick ball from Kristen Beams—with the previous two deliveries being affirmative LBW decisions! A hat-trick of LBWs would have been a nice memory of umpiring on the G but alas I had to keep the finger down as the ball was sliding down leg-side.

South Africa ExchangeHere is a report of my exchange to South Africa, where I umpired two Sunfoil Series First Class Matches:

• Cobras v Knights, Boland Park, Paarl, Feb 2–5, 2017 • Lions v Knights, Wanderers Stadium Johannesburg, Feb 9–12, 2017

On Saturday Jan 28, I was met at Johannesburg Airport by one of their National Panel umpires, Alahuddien Paleker (Pallies). Pallies and I were friends already, having stood together in a Sheffield Shield match during his exchange in 2014, and keeping in touch since. I was really happy that I would be umpiring with him during my second match. After checking into the hotel, I immediately went out for dinner with Pallies and his wife, as well as the New Zealand exchange umpire Richard Hooper. By staying awake until after dinner (even though I was tired) I was able to immediately adjust to the local time, and avoid too much jet-lag (using advice received from back home).

On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, myself and the other two exchange umpires (including Verinder Sharma from India) were left to our own devices, and we organised some sightseeing and a safari adventure. The safari was fantastic, but unfortunately the lion cub that I was playing with mistook my arm for a piece of fresh meat. Luckily the giraffe that I hand-fed was far gentler. The time spent with these other two gentlemen was invaluable, as I was able to talk all things cricket with colleagues from other countries, as well as sharing ideas and insights. I also used this time to get the sizes correct for my on-field clothing (but was unable to swap the travel shirts).

On Tuesday night (Jan 31), I joined up with Bongani Jele, my partner for the first match (a CSA International Panel Umpire). I had met Bongani in Australia, during his exchange in 2014. Together we had a meal, and then on Wednesday we went to the airport, where we were to travel to Cape Town, then on to Paarl for my first match. A challenge awaited at the airport, when I was booked onto the flight as Mr Joshua Geoff. I was not going to be allowed to board, until Bongani made the necessary calls to the Cricket South Africa booking office, who then re-booked my flight on the spot. Bongani also re-affirmed with the booking office that they had now also re-booked my return flight for next week in my correct name, and they assured him that they had. At the airport I also met the match referee Tiefie Barnes.

32 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

On to Boland Park, Paarl, in the Western Province, where we did a venue inspection, and observed the pitch to be very dry. Whilst there, we met the players and coach (Nicky Boje) from the visiting side (Knights). Nicky made it clear that he believed that the pitch had been deliberately prepared a certain way to advantage the home team, and that they were not impressed. We then travelled to our hotel in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch.

On Wednesday night we were joined by the third (reserve) umpire, Murray Brown, and then had a pre-match meeting and dinner. We then discussed playing conditions, team-work, players, venue matters, and all other management matters relating to our upcoming match.

Boland Park is surrounded by picturesque mountain ranges, and the match on Thursday (Feb 2) commenced under clear blue skies. Unfortunately, by end of day 1, the picturesque mountain scenery had been replaced by thick black smoke of bushfires around the mountains. These fires continued overnight and were still very prevalent on Day 2, leading to much property damage and road closures.

The home side, Cape Cobras, won the toss and batted on the dry flat wicket. The Knights fast bowlers of Duanne Olivier and Marchant de Lange did a fantastic job, and the Cobras were bowled out for 154. This, however, proved to be difficult to chase, as the Cobras immediately turned to their spinners, Captain Dane Piedt, and debutant Kyle Simmonds, and were able to dismiss the Knights for 153 in reply. The ball spun immediately, and continued on throughout the match, creating a different but obvious challenge for the umpires.

During day 2, we had a stoppage for GWL with a difference—the smoke from the bushfires started filling the playing area, causing us to stop play, as it was affecting the breathing of players and umpires alike. I also saw, first hand, the efforts of the local fire fighters. They certainly worked tirelessly, and were obviously without the resources or equipment that we are used to back home.

The Cape Cobras had a solid second innings, with former Protea batsman, Stiaan Van Zyl, scoring a century. The 332 which was set to win early on day 3, was far too much for the Knights, who were bowled out again for 180, with the spinners again doing all of the work. Game over on Day 3. Sure enough, the Knights did make a formal protest about the pitch, meaning that our views were sought by CSA about its fairness and fitness for play.

Throughout the next three days and nights, Murray Brown became my personal tour guide, where he totally devoted his time to my sightseeing and touring experiences. I was taken by Murray to various wineries in Stellenbosch (known as wine farms), a day-trip up Table Mountain using the cable car, a ‘braai’ at his home with his lovely family, and a day trip around the Cape of Good Hope to places such as Simons Town, Hout Bay and Cape Town City. A phenomenal effort of Murray to devote his time to me, and I know that he has given his time in similar way to many other touring umpires before me.

On Tuesday afternoon, I caught up with friend and previous umpiring colleague, Adrian Holdstock (SA and ICC International Panel Umpire), at the ICC umpires hotel in Cape Town. Adrian was there with an umpiring team for the ODI match between South Africa and Sri Lanka. I also caught up with another friend, Richard Kettlebrough (ICC elite panel), whom I have previously worked with, as well as umpiring coach, Denis Burns, whom I obviously know well from his time working at CA. These gentlemen invited Murray and me to dinner with the umpiring team that evening, as well as inviting me into the 3rd umpires box for the ODI match at Newlands, on the following day. I also met, and was lucky enough to chat with Karl Hurter (CSA umpiring manager), Sir Richie Richardson (ICC match referee), Richard Illingworth (ICC elite umpire) and Shaun George (SA and ICC panel umpire).

The experience at Newlands was fantastic, where I was able to observe ‘the best in the business’ Richard Kettlebrough conduct 3rd umpire duties, including using DRS, and dealing with code of conduct matters, as well as watching elite umpires prepare and deal with all aspects of the match. The ground itself is absolutely spectacular, and I really enjoyed the opportunity. I also enjoyed the discussions with Denis and Karl, as well as Mike Gadger (CSA Cricket Operations manager).

Wednesday (Feb 8) was the day I was to travel back to Johannesburg (this time on my own), and after being dropped off by Murray at the airport, I tried the self check-in, but quickly realised that I had again not been booked in correctly. I had given myself plenty of time, as I was prepared that this may be the case again, and was armed with a phone

Page 35: V.C.A. Umpires & Scorers’ Associationvcausa.vic.cricket.com.au/files/15551/files/VCAUSA Report... · 2017-08-14 · CV Finals – 2017 ... The Ian McGregor Medal ... and returning

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 33

number if required, however this time I carefully chose the check-in person, and was able to convince him that I was the person booked, and he allowed me to go through.

In Johannesburg, I was again collected by Pallies and, after checking in at the hotel, met the match referee Shaid Wadvalla, and the 3rd umpire, Gerrie Pienaar. We attended the Wanderers Stadium for a venue inspection, and I took far longer than necessary, as I wanted to fully take in the venue and its history. We conducted our pre-match meeting in the umpires’ room at the ground. We then met the curator, and I observed a well grassed pitch, which I was assured would bounce significantly. There is a significant slope to one side of the pitch, and my colleagues informed me that it can affect the bounce/direction of the ball.

Notwithstanding the obvious importance of our performance, the upcoming match had extra significance, as it was the final round of Sunfoil matches, and the trophy was very much up for grabs. In fact, five of the six sides could still win the title. The home side (Lions) were 4th on the table and still mathematically in the hunt, however the away side (Knights) despite their loss the previous week, were second, only 1.4 points behind the leading team (Titans). 1.4 points is effectively 140 runs within the first 100 overs (if bowling wickets taken are the same).

On Thursday (Feb 9), the Knights won the toss and batted. Knowing their requirements to score quickly, everything fell into place for them, and they amassed 7 for 408 on day 1, and were dismissed early on day 2 for 443. The pitch was very bouncy, as expected, and with the Knights two fast bowlers Duanne Olivier and Marchant de Lange bowling with plenty of energy and stamina, they bowled out their opponents for 87 and then 235 following on. The Knights won by an innings, and this was good enough to see them presented with the Sunfoil Series trophy at the completion of the match, again on day 3. The umpires and referee had a really good discussion after the game, about our performance, the exchange in general, and umpiring matters going forward, especially in South Africa.

That night, I caught up with Adrian Holdstock as well as his wife Carmen, and they again entertained me at their home the following day, prior to my flight back home.

Overall Highlights

• Umpiring with new partners, who were both fantastic guys and team-mates. In both cases, we were on the same page in relation to all teamwork matters, such as signaling, pitch hand over, communication, and pitch/ball/weather management, and I really enjoyed the matches with these gentlemen.

• The post-match discussions with umpires, referees, third umpires, and the discussions about similarities and differences in umpiring matters in our countries.

• The amazing hospitality of the South African umpires, but particularly Murray Brown, as well as Pallies and Adrian, and their respective wives. I really look forward to the continuing friendship with them.

• The entire experience with the ICC umpires at Cape Town, including dinner, and the development opportunity in the 3rd umpire’s box at Newlands.

• The beautiful towns, and picturesque venues, especially Stellenbosch, Cape Town, Newlands Stadium, and Wanderers Stadium.

• The amazing and different touring and cultural experiences that the country presented to me.

• Awesome weather for the entire trip.

• Very hospitable and friendly stakeholders (ground staff, venue staff, scorers, caterers, video analyst).

• Totally different umpiring experience in relation to pitch characteristics, especially at Paarl.

• Having the experience of being out of my comfort zone, umpiring 22 players, plus coaches, who had never met me, nor I them. My only knowledge of their potential behaviours and playing characteristics was from what the umpires had told me. Notwithstanding this, their pleasantries, and appreciation during and after the match.

• Backing my experience to hold me in good stead, even in unfamiliar surrounds, and trusting my own routines, judgment, and the use of strong teamwork.

• The team preparation and knowledge of playing conditions, as well as overall teamwork and experience.

34 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

• The overall behavior of the players, and the on field culture, which is a credit to South African Cricket.

• Learning about the cultural and political challenges faced by players in South Africa, and the challenges that extend to everyday life within the community.

• Observing, for the first time, the skill of some different overseas players, including some who could easily be playing international cricket, if not for the requirements in relation to race.

• Umpiring to a good standard and reaching my match and tour goals, successfully.

Learnings

• The experience of umpiring in a different time zone to back home, and managing sleep patterns around that.

• Managing my interactions with the family back home, who are in a different time zone, and ensuring it doesn’t affect your work performance.

• Umpiring, working and living in a cultural sensitive environment and workplace, and empathising with people who are affected by political and cultural issues, without allowing it to affect your professionalism.

• Eating food within a different cultural environment.

• Travelling overseas to a country where personal security is a major consideration in planning activities.

• Umpiring on vastly different pitches to what I’m used to. I was expecting them to be quite similar to Australia, however the pitch in Paarl was very different.

• Umpiring players that I have never seen or met before, on grounds that I’ve never been on, and with new colleagues, and with new playing conditions.

• The varying attitudes of my colleagues to their work/life balance, and the differences in their professionalism, and the perceptions that they display.

• The different and varying expectations in their management of the Code of Conduct and unfair play.

• The advantages of having reserve umpires present in First Class Matches.

• Travelling domestically within foreign countries. Dealing with foreign airlines, hotels and booking agents, and the challenges faced when bookings are found to be incorrect.

U18 Female National ChampionshipsWhat a learning curve!

Upon receiving my first official email from CA it was quite surreal. Time for pre tournament studies as there were new PCs to get through and also goal setting. I was fortunate enough to sit down with Phil Gillespie before heading off to Hobart to go through the expectations that CA would have throughout the tournament. It was an invaluable meeting.

It all started pretty smoothly with a taxi ride to the airport. There I met up with Bob Parry and other officials from CA to embark on our journey to Hobart to officiate in the national carnival for the Under 18 Female Championships.

Unfortunately our flight was delayed which made it all a bit of a rush. We landed in Hobart and there was no time to spare. We headed straight to Blundstone Arena for our pre tournament briefing. There was a wrong turn or two on the way. There I met for the first time the officiating umpires from around the country who I would be standing with. We quickly organised a get together for later that night so we could all get to know each other a little better. It was now time to rest as we had our breakfast meeting at 7:00am.

It was a very good idea to run through PCs before I left home as there was no time before game one. Before I knew it, I was meeting with curators, St Johns ambulance and the CA match manager. My first game was at Kingston Twin Ovals, which is Cricket Tasmania’s ‘Junction Oval’. Very picturesque. There were extra concussion rules to deal with, post game briefings and match reports. We also had bad weather on day one with interruptions to both innings.

Time to get the calculation sheet out. The game went well and I ended up physically and mentally drained.

Day two I found a little easier. Now that I knew what to expect I could prepare a little better. This time I was paired up with Jillian from Queensland. Sharing the same facility was no problem, however understanding her signalling and Tic Tac Toe was very different. Pre game chats quickly sorted out any differences that we had and our non-verbal communication proved excellent throughout the game. Post match briefing with the umpires’ observer was fantastic. Getting immediate feedback on the day certainly does help as everything is fresh in everybody’s mind. Constructive feedback is paramount for our development as umpires so whenever someone has something meaningful to say, we should make sure to take it on board.

Friday was one very cold day in Hobart where the sleet was slamming into our faces. The batsmen were shivering at the crease whilst fielders had hands in pockets with hand warmers. Holding the bowler’s jumpers at the bowler’s end, I swear I needed a clothes rack.

We had a rest day on Saturday and we were lucky to be invited to see the first session of the Shield game between Tasmania and NSW. We caught up with David Talalla who was the match referee for the game. We were also able to sit with him throughout the first session in the third umpire’s room. Wow! It is another level again in regards to the professionalism on how the day is run. Lost time calculations and allowances for the over rate were seamlessly accrued from constant feedback from the umpires through to David and vice versa. This is a level that I aspire to be able to get to, but there is so much work to be done before that is a possibility. I certainly have an increased found respect for the CA panel members and match referees.

Also on our rest day we managed a quick trip up Mt Wellington. Dare I say it, but this was the coldest that I have ever been. It was colder than your Mother-in-law’s kiss! Although there was a little cloud cover the view was still magnificent.

We had three days to go in the championship and I was starting to get to know the players well. I found myself improving throughout the week and put into practice the great feedback that I had been given earlier.

The Championship was run and won all too quickly for my liking, as I just didn’t want it to end. I have taken away some important notes from my experience:

• Preparation

• Teamwork

• Match management

• Perception

• Decision making

• Recovery

These six headings, in my mind, are key to success. I have brought what I have learnt from this championship and introduced them into my daily umpiring routines. This tournament has certainly helped me develop as an umpire and hopefully guide me to get better and more consistent performances.

I would like to send a big thank you to CA, Bob Parry and Richard Patterson for this amazing opportunity. I will certainly continue to work hard and look forward to representing the CV panel in future tournaments.

Social Cricket Matches

Mt Waverley Veterans v VCAUSASunday 5th March, 2017

Another perfect sunny Sunday and Chairman of Selectors for the Crockett Shield team for 2017, Tony Ventura won the toss and batted against the Mount Waverley CC Veterans. The pitch as usual was dry and cracking but did have some grassy patches just short of a length at the northern end. Chris Doyle (Melbourne’s 1st XI scorer) and Mattis van Eck backed up after their impressive debuts against the Australian Cricket Society in November and we also welcomed back Jason Leonard-Scott, Stephen Brne, Greg Azzopardi, Mick Nolan, Dan Bomford and Daryl Brigham. Alan Britton (Monash Tigers 2nd XI scorer) tended the scorebook and Tony Ventura and Alan McCarthy (Crockett Shield Selector and Captain) umpired. Rob Sturgeon played for the MWCC Vets CC and John Richards (Crockett Shield Selector and Vice Captain) returned to our ranks.

Jason Leonard-Scott and Greg Azzopardi opened the batting and found the pitch difficult to read with some balls seaming from a length and others keeping low. Greg was the first to fall to a ball keeping low and Jamie Wyatt fell soon after mistiming and being caught. Paul Welbourn also fell to a ball keeping low and the Vics were now 3/17 and in trouble. Things got worse when Mick Nolan was bowled, and at 4/19 after 10 overs a rescue mission was required. The “Great Scott” and Daryl Brigham resurrected the innings with some intelligent batting and a bit of luck. They put on 30 before Jason was bowled for 25 after batting for an hour. Stephen Brne arrived and with Daryl pushed the score to 67 before Steve fell for 14 trying to lift the scoring rate. The “Doctor” arrived and put on 20 with Daryl until Brigham fell at 7/87 from 28 overs.

Courtney Lai was caught soon after bringing Dan Bomford to the crease. Quick running with John Richards pushed the score to 106 when Dan gave Rob Sturgeon his first wicket for or against the VCAUSA by skying the ball to Thompson. John and Mattis van Eck teamed well to reach 124 in the 39th over before Mattis became the third batsmen bowled in the innings. With only four players reaching double figures it showed that the wicket was not going to get any easier to bat on and with our most potent bowling attack for some time we were confident of victory if we bowled accurately and fielded well.

After an excellent afternoon tea provided by Mt Waverley and Rob and Ruth Sturgeon we took to the field with Alan McCarthy captaining and Jamie Wyatt taking the gloves. Chris Doyle and Mattis van Eck opened the bowling and their accuracy and pace were putting the batsmen under pressure. Mattis got an edge from Oxley and Jamie Wyatt did the rest. At 1/15 from 6 overs Brne and Azzopardi came on. Greg picked up a wicket in his first over when he bowled Thompson with the Vets now 2/19 from 8 overs. Rod McKinnon came on soon after and after 1.1 overs he took a throw from the outfield which kicked up and hit him in the chin drawing blood. Rod left the field for treatment but returned soon after. Godkin was batting steadily but needed support from the other end to push the score along.

Daryl Brigham picked up a wicket in his first over having Anderson caught at first slip by the “Great Scott” at 3/39 from 15 overs. When Godkin retired on 30 with the score at 53 we needed to tighten the screws and prevent scoring which would in turn create wickets. When Mick Nolan bowled Logan for 11 the score had reached 4/69 from 24 overs and the game was in the balance with 56 runs needed from 96 balls for the Vets to win the game. Tight bowling and good fielding would be required by us to secure the win.

38 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

While we generally fielded very well we did put down a couple of catches. Rod McKinnon tumbled backwards striking his head on the ground trying to take a catch and left the field for the second time in the innings. After being looked after by Courtney Lai and Paul Welbourn and a Vets player who was also a doctor it was apparent that Rod was concussed and an ambulance and his family were notified. After a few hours of observation at hospital Rod was released into family care and after two days returned to work.

At the 28 over mark the 5th wicket fell for 78 when Nolan had Perkin LBW for 18. Mattis van Eck returned to the attack and in the 32nd over he picked up two wickets bowling Mattingly and then Green. With the score on 7/85 and with 40 runs needed from 48 balls the match was tilting towards the VCAUSA. The bowling continued to be accurate and the equation became too difficult for the Vets with boundaries or even twos difficult to score. The pair at the crease put on 28 runs but were unable to lift the scoring rate. Luke Edwards bowled out the last over only allowing 4 singles to secure a win for the Vics by 11 runs.

Batting plaudits went to Daryl Brigham (26), Jason Leonard-Scott (25) and John Richards (17no). The best bowling was by Mattis van Eck with 3/8 (6 overs), Mick Nolan 2/13 (6 overs) and Chris Doyle 0/10 (6 overs). Jamie Wyatt was tidy behind the stumps given the inconsistent bounce.

Mt Waverley again provided a sausage sizzle and the VCAUSA supplied the drinks while players and families enjoyed the MWCCV’s hospitality. Many thanks are due to official photographer Damien Herft who took action shots from off (and on) the field and to organisers Tony Ventura, Rob Sturgeon and John Richards. The VCAUSA selectors assessed a very strong bowling attack but a need to strengthen our batting to take on SACUSA in Adelaide in April.

The end of an enjoyable contest

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 41

Vale – Jack Cameron

Sadly I advised members that our good friend and past member, Jack D Cameron, passed away on Friday 7th April 2017.

I was fortunate to have known Jack for more than 50 years, having first been invited to the Cameron home in Noble Park following the 1961 Australian Tour of England, to look at slides of the trip on a projector.

Jack was the winner of the Association’s Bill Smyth Award in 1993 for services to cricket in Victoria, and at that time I interviewed him, and present the following excerpts.

Jack lived in North Melbourne, and started playing cricket with North Seconds in 1938; he was an “offie”.

Jack began as North Melbourne CC 2nd XI scorer in 1946-47, worked as a statistician for the ABC from 1954 and took over as North Melbourne CC 1st XI scorer when his father retired in 1970-71.

He also served with the Army and Air Force in Australia during World War 2, and resumed playing with North after the War; but unfortunately, he had a “crook” hand - and so took up scoring in the footsteps of his father. The highlight of his cricket career was his selection as the Board of Control’s official scorer for the 1961 Australian Tour of England.  His selection is outstanding as he was North Melbourne Second XI scorer at that time.He toured without his family, as “it was against the rules to take them”. “I couldn’t afford to anyway,” Jack said, “as I had a wife and five young children.” The Australian party toured for 33 weeks, from March 14th until mid November. The Australians played 6six days per week, and moved base twice a week when not playing a Test. The party travelled 12,000 miles in England. They would, for example, finish a game at Stanton at 4.00pm, pack up and travel to Manchester, arriving at 1.00am, and begin playing the next day at 10.30am—12,000 miles, and quite a rigourous itinerary.

Page 44: V.C.A. Umpires & Scorers’ Associationvcausa.vic.cricket.com.au/files/15551/files/VCAUSA Report... · 2017-08-14 · CV Finals – 2017 ... The Ian McGregor Medal ... and returning

42 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

Ten years after his return, he took over from his Dad as scorer for North Melbourne First XI at the beginning of the 1970–71 season, and has been with the Firsts ever since. When asked “how many games have you scored?” Jack replied: “Don’t know.” In addition to scoring for North, Jack was well known as the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s cricket scorer and statistician in Melbourne—that ever-silent statistician. He began with ABC radio when the Melbourne Cricket Ground was being prepared for the 1956 Olympics, scoring mainly at the Junction Oval in St Kilda, where First Class games were played in 1955–56 and 1956–57. He was involved as the commentator’s right hand man in the famous tied Sheffield Shield match at St Kilda between Victoria and New South Wales. Not incidentally, Bill Smyth officiated in this match.

As Jack Ivorson was giving special comments as the game neared a tense conclusion, Jack Cameron was busily hunting through old VCA reports for information on tied matches. As Jack’s North Melbourne colleague Len Maddocks took the catch to tie the match on the last scheduled ball of the game, Jack reported to Jack Ivorson that there had been no previous tie recorded; so Jack Ivorson was able to report to ABC radio listeners that a “first had taken place”.

In addition to an illustrious playing and scoring career, Jack has had other contacts with major sports in Victoria, including football, golf, athletics and baseball—mainly in a scoring and/or statistical capacity.

Jack developed a colour coded scheme as scorer and statistician for ABC radio golf, so that when a ball dropped into the hole, the commentator immediately knew who the tournament leader was.

A sponsor offered the Director J Murray Ashford a computer. The Director asked “What would I want that for?” The response was: “Well, 15 seconds after the ball drops into the hole, you’ll know who the leader is.” The Director replied: “No thanks. You’re too late. I’ll stick with Jack.”

Jack was radio statistician in athletics for the legendary athlete and commentator Franz Stampfl, and the legendary sportsman and commentator Dick Mason. Jack was even radio stats man for car racing at Sandown Park.

Jack’s business career led him to the heights of Victorian government. He was the Chairman of the State Tender Board for many years, and I ran across him there too.

Cricket Victoria’s 200 Club website indicates that Jack officiated in 372 First XI, 62 Tests, 235 Sheffield Shield, 65 other First Class, 145 ODI and 77 ODD matches for a total of 956 Cricket Victoria First XI games or higher. His record included 256 2nd XI matches, 37 others, 5 T20, 16 NMCC one-dayers, and 5 Second Class for a total of 1,275 matches.

The websites also indicates that his father, Jack L Cameron participated in 527 Cricket Victoria First XI games or higher: 411 NMCC First XI, 16 Tests, 69 Sheffield Shield, 31 other First Class, and 34 other VCA/Australia for a total of 561 matches.

As well as being a recipient of the VCAUSA’s Bill Smyth Award, the VCAUSA Cameron Medal for Scorer of the Year is named in honour of Jack and his father. Both are Life Members at NMCC/GKCC. Jack Junior was the VCAUSA’s Scorer of the Century in its Team of the Century.

On its website in 2003, Cricket Victoria wrote:

Another North Melbourne Club legend, Jack Cameron has informed the club of his retirement from the post of first team scorer after 32 years at the helm. Jack has been at the club since 1938, and has scored in excess of one thousand matches. Jack received the OAM two seasons ago for his services to cricket and was also inducted into the MCG Media Hall of Fame. The former ACB scorer will continue with the ABC until at least the end of this season. At a special luncheon for Jack on 16 February, the Kangaroos paid tribute to the man who has given more than 60 years of his life to the Club.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 43

At about the same time, Camberwell Magpies honoured one of Jack’s great mates, their legendary former scorer Phil Monohan to celebrate Phil’s involvement in 1,000 VCA matches. Cricket Victoria wrote: “Cricket Victoria pays tribute to both Jack Cameron and Phil Monohan for their enormous respective contributions to their clubs, to cricket in the State and to District/Premier Cricket in particular”.

Robin Bailhache, former VCAUSA President and Life Member provided the following commemorative:

Over the years, Jack Cameron became a legend in the ranks of cricket scorers. I fondly remember on several occasions being engaged in friendly banter about the relative importance of umpires and scorers in the game of cricket. To Jack (tongue in cheek) umpires came a distant second. Swift and accurate, during game time invariably when I turned to signal the scorers, the light was already on. I sometimes thought he knew the call before I did, although he did on one or two occasions keep me standing on one leg in order to let everyone know who ran the show. He liked visiting the umpires before the start of a day’s play so that he could say hello … and his family recall their dad relating how he used to lean out of the ABC box and clap the umpires onto the ground for a Shield match. In an almost empty stadium, that one person clapping could be clearly heard. Great memories shared with a great bloke.

It was fitting to see so many ABC faces at Jack’s funeral: Peter Booth, Graham Dawson, Clarke Hanson, Tim and Samantha Lane and Drew Morphett. Cricket Victoria and NMCC/GKCC were represented by Earl and Michael Eddings, and Greg Waring; other scorers present included Shaun Rodgers, Jim Hamilton and Shane Herbert.

The Cameron Family penned an obituary that appeared in The Age, titled: “Numbers man was a silent star of sport” (The Age, May 2 2017):

http://www.theage.com.au/comment/obituaries/numbers-man-was-a-silent-star-of-sport-20170502-gvx1uz.html

VCAUSA President Alan McCarthy, Committee and members bid their colleague and former member farewell, and pay their respects to the Cameron family, and to the media, cricket and scoring communities.

Umpire Service Recognition AwardThe following appeared in the CV 16/17 Premier Cricket Awards booklet—

This season’s Umpiring Recognition Award has been awarded to Eric Kelly. Eric began his umpiring career with Cricket Victoria in 1985/86 and since that time has amassed 450 matches in Premier Cricket. This includes 125 1st XI, 291 2nd XI, 15 3rd XI and 19 4th XI matches.

It is in the 2nd XI where Eric has proved to be an invaluable resource to Cricket Victoria and the Umpiring Manager in that he is one of 3 mentors in this grade. Eric umpires with, and then provides feedback to, the new umpires who have been promoted to the 2nd XI.

Eric not only completes his mentor duties with Cricket Victoria each Saturday, but also assists his great mate Darrell Holt in coaching the umpires in the North West Cricket Association. In this role, Eric advises them in completing the Cricket Australia Accreditation programs.

Cricket Victoria acknowledges Eric’s great contribution to cricket and to umpiring in this state. This year’s Umpires Recognition award goes to Eric Kelly.

Congratulations to Eric from the Committee and members of the VCAUSA on receiving this recognition.

Easter Monday: Farewell Breakfast

The two evening functions received good support with over 80 people attending on both nights. Congratulations to team captain, Alan McCarthy and all the playing members of the VCAUSA team who successfully retained the prized R.M. (Bob) Crockett Shield on Easter Saturday and to Ash Barrow (umpire) and Trevor Finlayson (scorer) for their efforts. On Saturday afternoon there were 51 Victorians in attendance at Henley Oval to cheer on the Vics. On Sunday, the Victorians secured the most points to enable them to also win the Keith C. Butler Memorial Trophy. This was an indoor games event that catered for all ages with lots of fun and laughter to be heard during the afternoon. A clean Easter sweep was achieved, a very rare occurrence for the visiting state. We even won the Skull award courtesy of Rod McKinnon!

Thanks also to Damian Herft for acting as our official photographer and to our selectors Alan McCarthy, John Richards and Tony Ventura for arranging cricket training sessions and pre match responsibilities. The embroidered playing shirts were again organised by John and Suzanne Collins.

Taking home all the silverware was a memorable achievement but the real winner was cricket fellowship between umpires, scorers and family members of both State Associations.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 51

Easter 2017 – The Crockett Shield RetainedThe Bob Crockett Shield has been retained! Captain Alan McCarthy won the toss and batted at Henley oval on a grassy pitch which was tacky underneath. Henley Oval is a big ground and the cones were set on the football oval boundaries. This would make boundary scoring difficult with a lush outfield. Runs on the board and a strong bowling attack would prove to be a winning formula. Ash Barrow and Michial Farrow umpired and Trevor Finlayson and Neil Ricketts scored.

Opening the batting for the VCAUSA was Greg Azzopardi and Sahan Weerasakera. Sahan was first to go hitting a full toss to Singh in the second over. Greg Azzopardi fell soon after trying to assert himself against the bowling on the seaming wicket and was bowled for 7. Alan McCarthy and Stephen Brne settled in trying to read the pace of the wicket. McCarthy was bowled by young Jack Aworth for 3 and with the score on 3/23 from 11 overs something special was needed. Stephen Brne and Daryl Brigham then put on 84 runs in an hour off 97 balls before Steve was caught for a well-made 50 from 63 balls with 3 boundaries. Even though the Duke ball was still swinging and seaming the batsmen were rotating the strike forcing SACUSA to try a number of bowlers to get a wicket. Daryl and Vice-Captain John Richards put on 57 before Daryl was stumped for 74 off SACUSA’s captain Michael Williamson. Daryl had struck 4 boundaries from 74 balls in 88 minutes. John and Steve Pitts pushed for runs until Steve was caught at short cover by Williamson off Craig Thomas. John and Jamie Wyatt pushed the score to 199 with clever running. John fell off the last ball for 33 and Jamie finished 12 not out. The size of the ground and the slow outfield restricted the VCAUSA to only 8 boundaries in a score of 7/199 from 40 overs.

After a great lunch VCAUSA’s attack used line and length to strangle the SACUSA batsmen. VCAUSA’s bowling attack was one of the strongest fielded in a Crockett Shield match as Stephen Brne and Daryl Brigham opened the bowling and immediately found their line and length. The first wicket to fall was Natashi Modi, trapped in front by Stephen Brne in the 9th over with the score on 12. Harry Singh followed soon after caught by John Richards after a fine running catch. Dave Little and Mick Sheppard put on 30 runs before Andrew Hind bowled Little for 14 from 57 balls. By this time 28 overs had been bowled and the tight bowling and excellent fielding was taking its toll on the SACUSA run chase. Shortly after Mick Nolan bowled Mick Sheppard for 13. Craig Thomas struck two 3s before being run out and at 5/56 from 30 overs victory appeared to be out of reach for SACUSA.

Michael Williamson and Adrian Drosd put on 34 and pushed the score to 90 before Dan Bomford took a good catch to dismiss Williamson off the bowling of Sahan Weerasekera. Adrian Drosd continued to hit out and on 27 he was caught behind by Jamie Wyatt off Greg Azzopardi. SACUSA’s wicketkeeper Kurt Miegel was run out soon after with the score on 8/93 from 36 overs. Shane Roberts was the last wicket to fall, LBW to Greg Azzopardi for 5. Duvall Bhatt and Chandra Kumar saw out the innings and with the score on 9/100 from 40 overs the VCAUSA had retained the Crockett Shield by 99 runs.

Crockett Shield debutants Mattis van Eck, Michael Nolan and Andrew Hind had been well supported by Stephen Brne, Daryl Brigham, Sahan Weerasekera, Greg Azzopardi and Luke Edwards in a fine bowling performance. The fielding was outstanding with Steve Pitts, Dan Bomford, Rod McKinnon and Victorian debutant Paul Welbourn all pressuring SACUSA who failed to score a boundary in their innings. Two run outs and great catches by John Richards and Dan Bomford epitomised the VCAUSA’s effort—never mind the suicidal dives by Alan McCarthy and Jamie Wyatt with 3 balls to go resulting in a head crunching collision. The Crockett Shield was returned to Cricket Willow by Chris and Julie Allan after it had been the centrepiece of a memorable photograph including all of the Victorian attendees at the Presentation Dinner.

The team thanks the umpires Ash Barrow and Michial Farrow and scorers Trevor Finlayson and Neil Ricketts for their professionalism and dedication to the Crockett Shield event. Thanks also to Glenn Cumming who acted as the reserve umpire for the VCAUSA. Damian and Caroline Herft patrolled the boundaries taking photographs of the participants and spectators throughout the match. The Selection Committee was well served by the Chairman

Background to the AwardsThe six Annual Awards not only recognise the outstanding performances by six of our active umpire/scorer members, but also honour the names of celebrated predecessors. The major award, the Robin Bailhache Commitment Award, was first awarded in 1992–93 as the Norwich Umpiring Commitment Award. At a 1996 General Meeting, the following motion was passed: “That in the light of the distinguished service given to the VCAUA by Robin Bailhache, the Annual Commitment Award should be renamed the Robin Bailhache Umpiring Commitment Award.” In the 1999–2000 season, following the introduction of official VCA scorers to the Association, the conditions of the Award were changed so that both active umpires and scorers could be considered for the Association’s most prestigious award, which would in future be known as the Robin Bailhache Commitment Award. The criteria for award of the Robin Bailhache Commitment Award are that the member has made a significant contribution to the Association off the field; has performed very well on the field (or in the scorebox); and is committed to their own and their colleagues’ performance. Selection is made by a process of confidential consultation between the President of the Association and other executive officers.

The four umpiring awards were established in 2000 and were named after four celebrated Victorian Test umpires of past years, viz. Jim Phillips, David Elder, Ron Wright and Andy Barlow, whose names had not been honoured in any other Association Award. During the 2005–06 season, the award criteria were modified to require the winning umpire to have officiated in at least half of the matches played in the grade for which each award is made. Selection is based on the umpires’ performance throughout the season as determined by the office of Cricket Victoria’s Umpiring Manager.

The scorers’ award was presented for the first time in 2001 and, for that year, was named the VCAUSA Scorers’ Award. It was the unanimous wish of the Association’s scorer members that their medal should be named after two of the most distinguished scorers in Victorian cricket history, viz. Jack Cameron snr. and Jack Cameron jnr. Selection is made by the scorer representatives on the Committee of Management, in consultation with the office of Cricket Victoria’s Premier Cricket Manager.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 65

The Robin Bailhache Commitment AwardThe Robin Bailhache Commitment Award is our Association’s most prestigious award, and the worthy winner for 2016–17 is Gerry Schembri, who meets the Award criteria so very well. The criteria for the award are:

• that the Member has made a significant contribution to the Association off the field

• has performed very well on the field or in the scorebox

• is committed to their own and their colleagues’ performance

Gerry joined the Association as soon as he joined the umpiring panel in 2006 and the Association has been the beneficiary of his commitment and loyalty ever since.

He is an avid supporter of Association activities, including:

• socialcricket matches

• other social events

• the biennial exchange with our South Australian colleagues.

He is involved at meetings, be that in discussion, collaboration, encouraging other members to become involved, or development activities such as discussion about Laws and Rules.

He umpired very well in season 2016–17, resulting in multiple finals appointments.

He is a passionate supporter of Association members, be they scorers or umpires. He encourages and challenges fellow members to develop and improve their experience, performance and skills.

Gerry’s attitude to teamwork is strong, encouraging scorers and umpires to stick together. He influences others to support their colleagues, whether they are members or not. His is a commitment to the professions of scoring and umpiring.

He is proud of our Association. In 2016–17, the Association has benefited from his involvement:

• by attending the biennial Easter activities in 2017 in Adelaide

• by attending all social events including restaurant nights, theatre nights, Melbourne Cup Day barbecue for new members, sausage sizzle at the last T&D

meeting, and the very successful Annual Dinner and Presentation Night

• by organising those events this season

• at Committee level as Association Vice President and Social Organiser, and in previous years as President and Treasurer

Congratulations of the Committee of Management and all Association members to this year’s Robin Bailhache Commitment Award winner, Gerry Schembri.

68 VCAUSA Annual Report 2017

The Cameron Medal, 2017Unlike the passage into Premier umpiring, requiring attendance at a series of classes on the Laws of Cricket followed by a satisfactory result in an examination, the passage into Premier scoring can involve various routes, such as essential chores as a player/umpire in the lower grades of Premier Cricket or even out in the suburban associations, scoring for one’s dependant sons and/or daughters and becoming hooked on the trade—or just walking into a Premier club and announcing that you would like to become a scorer for that club. Most Premier clubs would welcome such people as this last group.

In the case of the recipient of the Cameron Medal for this past season, Alan Britton’s start to his Premier scoring career was a little different. In the days of a manual scoreboard at the Punt Road ground he used to turn up religiously for every match being played there, and manipulate the numbers on the board.

His mastery of this old manual scoreboard and a love of our great game, lead Alan into the next level of club scoring with the result that a couple of years ago, Richmond Cricket Club (now the Monash Tigers) acknowledged his contribution to the club after he reached 250 games. His precise Premier Cricket statistics, as at the end of this recent season, read: 2 x 1stXI, 263 x 2ndXI, 7 x 3rdXI and 6 x 4thXI matches—278 in all. Alan, we are told, will arrive on match day at around 8:00am for an 11:00am start, such is his dedication to his craft. A further example of his commitment and dedication in this past season was that he travelled to Geelong by train to score for the Monash Tigers 4thXI throughout their winning Grand Final.

Unlike many Premier scorers, Alan is a member of our Association, regularly attending Association functions (including our Annual Dinner and Presentation Night) and has also turned out on occasions to score for social/practise matches for those in our Association who are still able to play the game.

Alan is also an MCC member. Outside of cricket, he supports the Geelong Cats and, in order “to keep body and soul together”, during the week, he collects a salary as a CPA Accountant with the Environmental Protection Authority.

Congratulations of the Committee of Management and all Association members to this year’s Cameron Medal winner, Mr Alan Britton.

The Cameron Medal for Scorer of the Year

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 83

R.M. (Bob) Crockett ShieldOne of the feature events on the VCAUSA calendar is the biennial Easter exchange with our sister Association in South Australia, SACUSA. In 2012, Kristen Thomas was commisioned by SACUSA to research the early history of the exchange, resulting in a revision of our understanding

of the origin of the exchange. Her findings were published in a leaflet unveiled during the Easter exchange in Adelaide in 2013 as follows:

Let the good times roll—cricket friendships offset The Great Depression

Why DID a cricket match between Victorian and South Australian cricket umpires begin? And when exactly did it occur? Until recently, accessible records indicated that 1936 was the inaugural year of competition. But modern technology has enabled research into historic newspapers that reveals plans for the interstate fixture were underway as early as 1930, and the actual first match was held in Carlton, Victoria in 1931. During the beginning of a significant worldwide economic depression this was a bold undertaking, but one which was inspired by a desire to promote goodwill and hope. The traditional game that ‘The Vics’ and ‘The Croweaters’ indulge in today was born of a need to remind people that fun is an essential ingredient of life—especially when life is looking challenging.

As it turned out, the result of the first match was a diplomatically correct ‘draw’. As it was not a limited overs game—and it appears that SA declared at 8 for 125—when Victoria reached 7 for 111 at stumps, the game was declared a draw. SA’s Victor Selth (former State level wicketkeeper) was generously awarded a trophy by Victoria, for being the best performing visiting player. (Source: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/artitle/45758502).

Ernest Ramsden was a Victorian founding player who had the pleasure of umpiring a Sheffield Shield AND a Vic vs West Indies match at the MCG just prior to the umpires’ game. Depression or not, lights were shining brightly for cricket umpires and their beloved game 82 years ago when our partnership began.

The competition was suspended during World War II, but resumed in 1947, playing for the R.M.(Bob) Crockett Shield; matches have been held every second year since then. Easter exchanges are much more than simply a cricket match, however. Members of both associations and their families get together to make and renew friendships; on each occasion there are numerous social events arranged.

The Victorian association was known as the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires’ Association until 1998 when it voted to expand its membership and role to include VCA official club scorers, and changed its name to the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires & Scorers’ Association (VCAUSA). In Crockett Shield records it is referred to by the initials VCAUA up to 1997 and VCAUSA from 1999 onwards.

The South Australian association was named the South Australian Cricket Umpires’ Association (SACUA), maintaining this name even after scorers were admitted to membership in 2001. In 2010, however, it changed its name to properly reflect its membership, becoming the South Australian Cricket Umpires & Scorers Association (SACUSA). In Crockett Shield records it is referred to by the initials SACUA up to 2009, and as SACUSA from 2011 onwards.

Both Associations are referred to by their current initials (SACUSA and VCAUSA) in column headings, but the historical initials are used in reference to specific matches prior to the changes of name.

VCAUSA Annual Report 2017 89

The Ian McGregor MedalFollowing the 2003 Easter Visit, at which time Ian McGregor was known to be terminally ill (he died in August 2003), the committees of the two associations decided to strike a medal for the player of the match to be called the Ian McGregor Medal. One of the medals was presented to Ian and his family a short time before his death. Ian was an enthusiastic participant and key organiser of Easter events from 1989 to 2001.

The Keith C Butler TrophyFollowing the 1999 Easter visit a combined meeting of the committees of the two associations decided to commence a new competition between the two associations, to be known as the Keith C Butler Trophy. Keith Butler was a SACUSA member who attended every Easter event from 1936* to 1997.

*In view of the new discovery that the exchange actually commenced in 1931, it would be interesting to know whether Keith participated in the earlier exchange(s)

Competition is in sport or activity and a format which enables and encourages participation of all members and families. The actual contest is determined for each visit by the host association.
