She added three aces against the Roadrunners and four on the weekend. Meanwhile, Weynand avergaed 3.07 kills per set with 43 kills on the weekend. That included 17 kills against UTSA, 15 against Abilene Christian and 10 against Wichita State. She added an ace and six blocks.

SETTER OF THE YEARSenior setter Caylin Mahoney was named Most Outstanding Player in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament, and that respect carried over into 2014 when a poll of the SBC coaches awarded Mahoney with the title of SBC Preseason Setter of the Year. She was the only Bobcat recognized on the Sun Belt’s preseason team. Last year, with 1,256 assists, Mahoney upped her career total at Texas State to 1,591 to move into the top five all-time at Texas State.

NEWCOMERS ON THE SQUADThe Bobcats welcome 10 newcomers to the 2014 squad after losing just four letterwinners from the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship squad. Texas State is already seeing the benefits of the strong group the team has added. Lauren Kirch leads the team in kills with 49 and has been the top freshman to stand out.

In addition, Alex Silver, a defensive specialist from Coppell, has logged significant time playing in 13 of the 17 sets the Bobcats have played so far and tallied 22 digs, fifth on the team. Freshman middle blocker Kathryn Turman has also seen time for Texas State.

The Bobcats are still waiting for a contribution from sophomore defensive specialist/libero Brenna Lyles, a Nebraska transfer, as she recovers from minor injury. As the season progresses, Texas State could see work from right side hitter Jordan Kohl, middle blocker Morgan Eason, right side Samantha Sellars and defensive specialist Meagan Mellenbruch.

STARTING STRONGThe Bobcats put together a 2-1 start to the season at the Houston Cougar Classic. Texas State took down Lamar in five sets and, after dropping to ACC foe Wake Forest, beat Houston on the road, 3-1.

TABBED SECOND IN THE SUN BELTIn addition to Mahoney being named the Sun Belt’s Preseason Setter of the Year, Texas State was tabbed second in the conference’s preseason poll, notching three first place votes. The Bobcats finished second to UALR which garnered four first place votes and 110 points to Texas State’s 99.

The entire poll is as follows:RANK TEAM FIRST PLACE VOTES POINTS1. UALR 4 110 Points2. TEXAS STATE 3 993. Georgia Southern 2 954. UT Arlington - 835. South Alabama 1 766. UL Lafayette 1 637. Appalachian State - 628. Arkansas State - 589. Troy - 4110. Georgia State - 2811. UL Monroe - 11

TEXAS STATE BOBCAT VOLLEYBALL2014 GAME NOTES

The sixth winningest active head coach in NCAA Division I volleyball, Karen Chisum capped her 34th season at the helm of Texas State Volleyball with a Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship in 2013, the team’s first season in the SBC. Chisum led Texas State Volleyball to the first SBC Tournament Championship by any team at Texas State as 2013 was the program’s inaugural season in the Sun Belt.

Going into her 37th year total at Texas State, as she was an assistant coach for two seasons before tak-ing over the program in 1980, Chisum has amassed 781 victories. She stands at 786-500-3 (.611) in her career, all at Texas State, to place her 14th on the all-time list of winningest NCAA Division I coaches. She holds a record of 314-132 (.704) in conference play.

A Texas State alumnus, Chisum helped make Tex-as State’s entrance into the Sun Belt one to remem-ber as her team dominated in the 2013 SBC Tour-nament, only dropping one set in three matches. Junior setter Caylin Mahoney was recognized as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player as she gave out 116 assists with 26 digs, 19 kills and 10 blocks, while senior Amari Deardorff dominated the cham-pionship match with 17 errorless kills for a career high .680 hitting percentage. Deardorff was also named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team along with senior middle blocker Ashlee Hil-bun.

Deardorff and Hilbun also earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors. Chisum’s athletes don’t just achieve on the court though. Deardorff and Ma-honey were named to the SBC Commissioner’s List for their academic performance while Hilbun and Molly Ahrens made the SBC Academic Honor Roll.

Chisum earned her 750th career victory in 2012 with a 3-0 sweep of Seattle U on the road Sept. 29. The team also saw two players, Amari Deardorff and Ashlee Hilbun, recognized as All-WAC performers to add to the long list of Bobcats to earn All-Confer-ence status under Chisum’s tutelage.

Before that, however, in Texas State’s final season in the Southland Conference, Chisum collected her sixth Southland Conference regular season cham-pionship and seventh tournament title. The 2011 Southland Conference Coach of the Year, Chisum has 757 career victories to her credit and has estab-lished herself as one of the elite collegiate coaches in America.

In addition to being a highly successful coach, the five-time conference Coach of the Year also serves as an assistant athletic director in Texas State’s Athletic Department, a position Chisum has held for the past nine years.

Under Chisum’s guidance, the Bobcats have won seven regular season conference championships and eight tournament championships.

The Bobcats’ seven conference championships under her leadership began with the 1986 Gulf Star Conference crown and also include Southland Con-ference titles in 1991, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2011.

Chisum also led Texas State to Southland Confer-

ence Tournament Championships in 1991, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011, and a Sun Belt Conference Tournament Championship in 2013. Her teams earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament each year.

For her merits, Chisum was selected Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 1991, 2000, 2003 and 2011 after receiving the same honor in the Gulf Star Confer-

ence in 1986.Her 700th career win came with a three-game

sweep over Prairie View A&M in the team’s home opener Sept. 7, 2010. Her next landmark win will be 800, putting her in the company of just 18 oth-er coaches all-time in all divisions of the NCAA. Her 700th victory came a little over five years after Chi-sum earned her 600th career win with a sweep of Morgan State in the first match of the season on Sept. 2, 2005.

Chisum has coached numerous athletes who have received all-conference honors with the Bob-cats. In addition to Deardorff and Hilbun in 2013, the duo also earned all-conference in 2012. Four more athletes earned the honor in 2011 – Amber Calhoun, Deardorff, Caleigh McCorquodale and Melissa Toth. Chisum has coached 25 All-SLC First-Team players during her career. Overall, 91 of her players have received all-conference honors, 75 of which were in the Southland Conference.

She also coached four Conference Players of the Year. Kim Wells-Lauwers won the award for the Gulf Star Conference in 1986, while Stephanie Winn-Lane and Shenequa Bedford were named Southland Con-ference Players of the Year in 1991 and 2000, respec-tively. In 2011, Amber Calhoun added her name to that exclusive list.

Chisum has also tutored three SLC Newcomer of the Year selections, as Kristy Braun-Rioux won the honor in 1991, Krisha Neimann-Crosley in 1993 and Jennifer Dallao in 1999.

Several of Texas State’s players have garnered All-Conference honors in multiple seasons. In 1997, Crosley became just the fourth player in South-land Conference history and first Texas State player to earn All-Conference honors all four years. She earned All-SLC First Team honors as a freshman and sophomore and was a Second-Team selection as both a junior and senior.

As proud as she is of her players’ honors and ac-complishments on the court, Chisum also takes a great deal of pride in the fact that her players excel in both the classroom and the community as well.

Krystal Kolkhorst embodied Chisum’s ideals as she was named to the ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-America Third-Team, the SLC Setter of the Year and SLC Tournament MVP in 2004. She also earned the SLC’s Scholar Athlete of the Year award in 2004.

In 2005, Elizabeth Nwoke was named the MVP of the SLC Tournament to give the Bobcats back-to-back SLC MVPs.

As a squad, the volleyball team has won the Em-mitt P. Shelton Academic Excellence Award three times, including both 2004-05 and 2005-06. The award is given annually to the top Texas State men’s and women’s athletic teams with the highest cumu-lative grade point average.

Chisum’s career as a volleyball coach began as an assistant at Goodnight Middle School in San Mar-cos. She moved up the coaching ranks when she was named an assistant at San Marcos High School

before becoming the head coach at New Braunfels High School. Chisum led the Unicorns to a Class 3-A State runner-up finish in 1976, coaching former Tex-as volleyball and basketball standout Nell Fortner, who later served as head coach of the 2000 USA Olympic team that won a Gold Medal. Fortner re-cently retired as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn. In 1980, Chisum was named Texas State’s fifth head volleyball coach and is still going strong more than three decades later.

Chisum’s influence in volleyball reaches far be-yond Texas State. She serves as a member of both the NCAA and American Volleyball Coaches Associ-ation voting committees for regional and national rankings. She has also been a teaching clinician for various volleyball programs and camps throughout the United States.

In 2011, Chisum was named a Texas State Dis-tinguished Alumni. The award dates back to 1959 when it was presented to Lyndon B. Johnson, a U.S. senator at the time. It acknowledges outstanding accomplishments and leadership in the individual’s chosen business, profession or life work on a nation-al or international level.

In 1994, Chisum became the first female to be accepted for membership in the “T” Association’s Hall of Honor. During her intercollegiate days at Tex-as State, Chisum played on the softball and tennis teams. Induction into the Hall of Honor is the high-est award a letterwinner at Texas State can receive.

Chisum also co-authored a book titled “Devel-oping a Successful Volleyball Program” with former Bobcat volleyball player Stephanie Scott Jordan.
