FEDERAL ELECTION

Vaughan-Woodbridge a seemingly close race between Conservative,

Liberal candidatesBy AdAm [email protected]

The federal election campaign, on the national stage, is shaping up to be a close three-way race between the NDP, Conservatives and the Liberals.

And, not surprisingly, the three main party leaders — Tom Mul-cair, Stephen Harper and Justin Trudeau — have been crisscross-ing the country courting voters.

It’s a slightly different story in Vaughan-Woodbridge where there’s a seemingly tight, two-way race between Tory incumbent Julian Fantino and rookie Liberal candidate Francesco Sorbara.

For the last few weeks, they’ve both been knocking on doors, hosting events, firing off press releases and hitting the summer barbecue circuit.

NDP candidate Adriana Zichy, on the other hand, has yet to be heard from despite landing the nomination several months ago.

When Tracy Eichler was preg-nant with her third son, she found a lump in her breast.

The Maple resident under-went ultrasounds every six months to monitor it. Then, 10 months after she gave birth, doctors performed a biopsy and

concluded that while the lump was cancerous, the tumour was localized.

A subsequent MRI, however, showed the cancer had actually spread — though not too widely.

Now, just a year after that diagnosis, Eichler is taking part in the annual Shoppers Drug Mart OneWalk to Conquer Can-cer benefitting Princess Margaret

Cancer Centre. “Princess Margaret is one of

the best places in the world,” said the 35-year-old mother of three boys aged seven, five and one. “It was something I wanted to do knowing that the money was going directly to somewhere that helped me get through this.”

Dal Colle embraces challenge of cracking

NHL club’s rosterBy Tim Kelly

[email protected]

Vaughan’s Michael Dal Colle hopes he won’t be voted off the island this October.

The 19-year-old left-winger is making his second effort to crack the New York Islanders this month. Don’t bet against him landing a spot on captain John Tavares’s top line.

The soft-spoken athlete has a quiet intensity but very strong com-petitive drive.

“My goal after I got drafted to the OHL (seventh overall) was to see if I could get drafted higher in the NHL. It’s interesting how that works. The O is just Ontario, the NHL is the whole world. Those two years are really big. They make or break players. It’s all about sacrifice.”

Dal Colle succeeded by going fifth overall to the New York Islanders in 2014.

“Higher to the Show than the O,” he said proudly.

Dal Colle made his case to play at the highest level with a 31-point explosion in 21 games in the OHL playoffs last spring, helping Oshawa win the OHL title. He followed up by playing a major role as the Gener-als captured the Canadian Hockey League’s Memorial Cup champion-ship.

A 6-3, 194-pounder who has starred for three years with the Gen-erals, Dal Colle would love to play with Tavares.

❚ Training camp

Dal Colle heads to training camp on Long Island today but the big night, if he can stick, would be Fri-day, Oct. 9, when the Islanders face off in the regular season in their new home at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center against the defending Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks.

“If I can be a part of that, (open-ing night) that will be pretty special,” said Dal Colle.

Pro camp won’t have the “wow” factor Dal Colle said it had for him last year, when he attended his first

NHL camp. The teenager will be ready for the

cast of veterans he’ll be competing with for jobs. He knows NHL hockey is a far cry from junior hockey.

“These guys have kids, they’re adults. It’s real life. It’s not junior any-more, that’s why it’s the biggest tran-sition, going from junior to the pros,” he said.

What brought it into sharp focus was when the then 18-year-old was talking to 38-year-old Eric Boulton, who told the youngster he had to leave to take his kids to hockey.

“His sons were like 15, just three years younger than me. It really puts it in perspective,” he said.

❚ Family trials

As Dal Colle’s hockey career has progressed over the past decade, his family has had to deal with its own trials and tribulations.

Older brother Jonluca, the family’s middle child, has autism and suffers from grand mal seizures. He requires

constant attention and round-the-clock care.

Mother Wendy was often at the rink with Daniela, the family’s oldest child who attended Niagara College on a full hockey scholarship from 2009-13, while father Gus was with Michael at his own hockey games.

As a result, Wendy said until Michael was drafted to the OHL, she only saw him play a handful of times.

“People knew about me of course, but some of the other parents on Michael’s teams thought my hus-band Gus was a single dad,” laughed Wendy.

The biggest challenge for the Dal Colle family – by far – came in March 2006 when Wendy was diagnosed with breast cancer. Dal Colle was just nine at the time and engrossed in hockey – and Wendy wanted to make sure it stayed that way.

“He (Michael) went away on tour-naments while I was going through chemotherapy and I was so sick try-ing to watch my other son,” said Wendy recalling her illness.

Her chemotherapy lasted 10 months, then she had surgeries, 40 rounds of radiation, “then I had to do four more surgeries after that,” said Wendy.

The whole grueling process lasted about two years.

“Looking back on it now, I tried to hide it from Michael. I didn’t want it affecting his game. I didn’t want to worry him because he internalizes things a lot, he was always a really intelligent kid, and I didn’t want it wrecking his game,” said Wendy.

Dal Colle said he was too young to really get a full understanding of what

his mom was going through though he saw the hair loss, the weight loss and the constant trips back and forth to Sunnybrook Hospital.

With time to reflect on it all, he finds himself in awe of what his mother has gone through.

“She was strong, I didn’t even know back then it was a life-threaten-ing illness. Looking back now, it was crazy how she dealt with that while raising a special-needs kid and two other kids who were always at the rink playing hockey. It’s amazing,” said Dal Colle about his mother.

The good news for everyone is that as of March 6, Wendy will be a 10-year cancer survivor.

“I’m going to have a party,” she said.

The person closest to Dal Colle when it comes to hockey is father Gus who never misses a game. He even made it down to the Barclays Center this summer to see his son practice.

Asked to describe Gus, Dal Colle cracks a smile.

“He’s pretty stylistic, likes his hair, likes his shoes, likes his car. He has a little Fiat Abarth that he just whips around in -- it’s about the size of this (kitchen) table. He gets his hair cut every week, puts the products in his hair, has a new pair of shoes every week,” said Dal Colle, obvious affec-tion in his voice.

He knows Gus will be in the crowd quietly cheering him on, whether it’s Oct. 9 in Brooklyn or wherever and whenever he plays his first NHL game.

Perhaps, it’s not sur-prising given the low sup-port typically garnered by the New Democrats in Vaughan.

For instance, in the 2011 federal election the NDP candidate secured 7,940 votes compared to 20,435 for the Liberal candidate and 38,553 for the Conser-vative candidate.

Granted, the riding boundaries have changed and that could affect the

results on voting day, Oct. 19.

(The former Vaughan riding encompassed most of the city, except Thornhill, but it has been split in half to create two smaller rid-ings Vaughan-Woodbridge and King-Vaughan.)

But recent projections suggest it’s a close contest, especially compared to 2011 when Fantino, a for-mer police chief, crushed veteran municipal politi-cian Mario Ferri, who ran for the Liberals.

The Huffington Post, in an analysis piece published last week, concluded:

“Julian Fantino in Vaughan–Woodbridge is anything but safe, with a 66 per cent chance of winning. With Fantino holding only a three-point lead over the Liberal candidate Frances-co Sorbara, this is the very definition of a close race.”

Online election predic-tion website www.threehu-ndredeight.com also shows it as a squeaker, at this point, with Sorbara having

slight edge as of Sept. 8.The NDP’s Zichy, mean-

while, ranks a distant third. On the campaign trail,

Fantino has been talking a lot about the economy, crime and combatting ter-rorism.

The 73-year-old father of two is touting the Tories’ plan to bolster the econ-omy through a combina-tion of tax cuts, balancing the budget and investing in manufacturing, job train-ing and innovative product development.

He’s also emphasizing his party’s tough-on-crime agenda with stiffer penal-ties for drunk drivers and longer sentences for those convicted of crimes deemed to be of a brutal nature.

Fantino has also high-lighted the Tories commit-ment to fighting ISIS in the Middle East and increas-ing the powers of CSIS and the RCMP to monitor and intervene in suspected ter-

rorist activity.Sorbara, who works as

a corporate bond research analyst with Scotiabank, has been trumpeting his party’s plan to cut income taxes for middle class earn-ers while jacking them up for those earning more than $200,00 annually.

The 43-year-old father of two is also promoting the Grits’ pledge to increase Canada Pension Plan Ben-efits and to run deficits for three years in a bid to create jobs by investing an addi-tional $60 billion – double what the Conservatives have promised — in infra-structure funding.

Local voters looking for an alternative to the three main parties don’t have many options at this point.

Anthony Gualtieri is running for the Libertarian Party, while the Green Party, which typically posts a local candidate, has yet to nomi-nate anyone.

Fantino breezed to victory locally in 2011 electionFrom front page

Julian Fantino, left, is seek-ing re-election in Vaughan-Woodbridge. Liberal Fran-cesco Sorbara, right, is among the challengers.

Unknown runner became courageous hero: Terry Fox

he legend of coura-geous Canadian Terry Fox has become just that — legendary.

But as the 35th anni-versary of his Marathon of Hope draws closer this month, and as all our communities prepare to pres-ent annual fundraising walks in his name, it’s fascinating to take a glimpse into how the media wrote about this passionate young man with one leg and a dream of run-ning across Canada.

It’s important to remember that newspapers, radio and TV stations did their best to share news of Ter-ry’s impending arrival to their com-munities in the days before Twitter, Facebook and cellphones.

An editorial from a July 1980 Richmond Hill Liberal newspaper, entitled “Terry’s now clear of popu-lated area,” is a fun look back at how local newspapers wrote about and praised this unknown young man from B.C., who — we now all know — became one of Canada’s most famous heroes.

“Terry Fox — fighting a one-man battle against cancer — finally arrived in Richmond Hill Friday afternoon, but even the radio sta-tions in the area were hard pressed to inform people when he would be in any one spot.

Last week, newspapers along Yonge Street, from Steeles Avenue to Bradford, attempted to predict when and where the young one-legged runner would be. It was vir-tually an impossible task.

Terry, who is attempting to run across Canada, has been in this area for about two weeks and has criss-crossed himself so much, it’s a won-der he’s not dizzy.

In Richmond Hill: Hillcrest Mall, a week before the runner was sched-uled to arrive, attempted to set up a reception and set the wheels in motion. Canadian Cancer Society volunteers worked inside the mall and collect some $6,000, while mall employees put together another $2,400.

The reception in front of Hillcrest

finally happened Friday afternoon, but as late as Friday morning, one report said Terry was behind sched-ule and would abandon his plans to run north on Hwy. 11, selecting instead Hwy. 27.

When the runner had actually arrived on Hwy. 11, we were still getting reports he wasn’t coming to Richmond Hill.

Thursday night, Terry was in Aurora for a reception, Friday morn-ing he in the Brampton area, at noon he was at Canada’s Wonder-land in Maple and in the afternoon he was in Richmond Hill.

The poor kid must be going bon-kers by now. He has been directed in so many circles he must be having trouble finding west.

Terry Fox is doing a great service in helping to fight cancer. And every district of the Cancer Society wants to acknowledge him in that partic-ualar area.

He has probably come closer than anyone to actually being in a dozen places at once.

Now that he’s on his way out of the densely populated Metropolitan area, Terry hopefully can relax a bit and get back to his original chal-lenge. Keep running, Terry.”

Vaughan is honouring Terry with a Terry Fox Run in Woodbridge Sept. 20 at Boyd Park. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the run begins at 9:30 a.m.

Every town and city is proud to fundraise and celebrate Terry’s epic feat 35 year ago. Bring along your friends and family and keep Terry’s dream of fighting cancer alive.

Why no Curb Appeal signs in Thornhill?Re: Looking for feedback on city hall space, Sept. 3.

I am extremely disap-pointed by the lack of fol-low through by the City of Vaughan parks and recre-ation department on its 2015 Curb Appeal awards program this summer.

Each year for the past sev-eral years, the city has dis-tributed Curb Appeal yard signs as worthy recognition to homeowners who have been nominated for their beautiful yards, which meet several criteria.

While Curb Appeal yard signs have been distributed to Woodbridge and Maple homeowners, to my knowl-edge, not a single sign has been given out in Thornhill.

A month ago, I was told by parks and recreation per-sonnel that this was due to a lack of local volunteers. Repeated calls to the parks and recreation department have not generated any response or action.

My street (Colvin Cres-cent) and surrounding

neighbourhood has many beautiful properties, sig-nified by numerous Curb Appeal yard signs from pre-vious years.

The Curb Appeal award program should be a win-win situation, whereby homeowners are motivated to put in hard work, time and money to make their yards more attractive, in turn inspiring their neighbours to up their games, leading to a more beautiful city.

Some good Vaughan values on display

The People of Vaughan have hearts of gold.

Daily we understand the blessings, that we have and are grateful for even through rough and difficult situa-tions we all face at times. We always try our best to

help each other out we are always united in col-laboration for our family in Vaughan. Our Vaughan val-ues are at the heart of our home in Vaughan.

Recently as I went for my run by our home, there was a car on Langstaff Road at the side of the road. It had a flat tire.

As I passed by the car again (I was running at Langstaff and Ansley Grove) a stand-up Vaughan citizen in his car called out to me.

He asked me if I needed gas. He had seen the car and thought I had run out of gas.

He offered to drive me to the gas station.

I thanked him for taking the time to see if I was OK and needed help.

Those are the values of consideration, thoughtful-ness, and willingness to help each other out.

A Vaughan bank, that according to neighbours has been robbed three times in the past six years, has been hit once again.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, police had made one arrest after the incident occurred at 12:20p.m. at the Scotia Bank, located in a plaza, near Napa Valley Drive and Islington Drive

Investigators said Wednes-day afternoon the other man, who is described as in his early twenties, was still on the loose.

Neighbour Afzal Khan, owner of Electro Shack, said he heard about the incident after a man on a bike rode past his door and told him the bank was being robbed.

“When I walked out I saw the two men’s backs as they walked away,” he said, not-ing they only started run-ning when they rounded the bend. “It’s shocking to hear, yes, but the place has been robbed three times since it came here six years ago.”

He said he was expecting the pair to jump in a getaway vehicle, but said he never saw one, explaining how the pair took off and ran behind the plaza.

Const. Varien Paron said the employees affected by the incident were shaken up but, all things considered, seemed alright.

On the sidewalk adjacent

to the bank police had cor-doned off a white baseball cap – allegedly belonging to one of the suspects – and an air pistol.

Nearby, St. Padre Pio Ele-mentary School had been put on ‘hold and secure’ while police investigated.

that Eichler saw advertise-ments for the walk in sup-port of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

She decided, almost immediately, that she wanted to take part.

“It was a really brave decision at the time,” Eichler said.

She and her husband, Thomas, both signed up as part of a team put together by his employer, dubbed Ceridian Cares Walkers.

To date, she’s raised more than $3,000 while her husband has raised more than $1,600, surpassing the $1,500 minimum each participant must raise.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, the Eichlers will join thou-sands of men and women, of all ages, for a 25-kilo-metre stroll through some of Toronto’s iconic streets and neighbourhoods.

Last year’s event raised saw 3,100 people take part and raise more than $7.7 million.

“I understand that you walk past the hospitals and I’ve been told that the doctors are standing outside when you walk by, which is kind of nice,” she said.

Eichler says she got through the tough times by speaking to other peo-ple who’ve gone through the same thing and by

educating herself “every step of the way.

“Being a young mom with kids, you also learn to ask for and accept help,” she added.

And to women who find a lump, Eichler has a very important message to deliver:

“You get a biopsy. You don’t wait.”

Eichler had been poised to return to work as a high school teacher with York Region Dis-trict School Board when she

got the news that she had breast cancer.

Instead of returning to her classroom, she spent the next several months undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy at

Mount Sinai Hospital followed by 25 rounds of radiation ther-apy at Princess Margaret Can-cer Centre.

“Having three young kids was difficult,” she said. “My

husband was there, but he had to go back to work. So my par-ents essentially had to step in as caregivers for my kids.”

It was while undergoing treatment downtown Toronto,

Local businesses now have a powerful tool to connect them to shop-pers who are planning to buy their products.

On behalf of Metro-land Media and your community newspaper, Pulse Research has sur-veyed our readers and collected in-depth infor-mation about what shop-pers are planning to buy in the next 12 months.

John Marling, found-er of Pulse Research, described Pulse of Metroland as a prospect-ing tool that “gives the advertising department a direct barometer of the advertising needs of businesses. This tells you what your readers are going to buy and they’re going to be buying it locally.”

The purchasing intentions of Metroland readers were collected through a Pulse survey in July and compiled in August. And while Mar-ling noted many surveys, such as federal election polls, pull data from a sampling of between 800 and 1,600 people, more than 4,300 of our readers completed the 40-min-ute online survey, pro-viding an extremely reli-able sampling.

The data gleaned from 4,356 respondents applies to 516 business categories “from plumb-ers to financial plan-ners,” he said.

The results offer interesting details about Metroland readers:

• 3.2 per cent plan to have laser eye surgery

• 5.6 per cent say they will go to an audiology clinic

• 10.5 per cent need an electrician

• 16.9 per cent are planning to call a handy-man

• 42.3 per cent say they will shop in a book-store

• 24.9 per cent say they will start using or will change their auto insurance provider

• 13.5 per cent plan to have shoes repaired

• 8.7 per cent need a tune-up or repair for a bicycle

• 4.9 per cent are planning to buy a bed for their dog

Ian Proudfoot, pub-lisher and vice-president of Metroland Media in Toronto, York, Simcoe and Muskoka, is thrilled to support local busi-nesses through this new corporate initiative.

“This is extremely valuable information for our local business owners who rely on us to reach their custom-ers, our readers,” Proud-foot said. “Knowing how many people in the mar-ket are ready and willing to spend money locally gives us the knowledge to guide our advertisers in the right direction. It really is a win-win situa-tion for local businesses and local shoppers.”

Pulse of Metroland offers very detailed infor-mation to businesses in each category. For exam-ple, those readers plan-ning to shop at a furni-ture store in the next 12 months indicated what they were intending to buy living room furni-ture, a new mattress, an area rug or other items.

Metroland has the pulse of local shoppers

Escape blends practicality, performance – and panacheNeil Moore

Metroland Wheels

I’m not sure if “meh” is a real word, but it sure gets a lot of play.

Like a verbal shrug of the shoulders, people use it to express boredom or in-di erence.

Useful, for example when being told you’re having meatloaf for dinner, or be-ing asked to re ect upon the upcoming federal election.

‘Meh’ is precisely how I felt about the last-generation Escape. It wasn’t a bad lit-tle SUV, and Ford sold a ton of them, but its bland, boxy shape – ideal for schlep-ping cargo – wasn’t much to look at.

And it was a little pricey.Opt for AWD (a no-brainer for any SUV),

upgrade from the base four cylinder and toss in a few amenities, and you’re top-ping $35K.

For that much dough, I expect a little sizzle with my steak.

So in 2013, Ford replaced this stout but schlumpy model with one that is crisper, edgier and leaner than its predecessor. And it can carry even more.

The third and current generation Es-cape also comes with more powertrains, starting with a base 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four cylinder (168 hp, 170 lb/ft), moving up to the 1.6-litre turbocharged “Ecoboost” four (178 hp, 184 lb/ft), and lastly the 2.0 litre Ecoboost that delivers 240 hp and 270 lb/ft of torque.

Escape is based on the global C plat-form, shared with the Focus, and with its steeply-raked windshield, rear-sloping roo ine and tapered greenhouse, looks a lot like Ford’s popular compact hatch – albeit taller and larger.

Despite these e orts to make the Es-cape less trucky, engineers managed to carve out even more cargo space: 971 litres behind the 60/40 second row seats, and a generous 1,920 litres with them dropped.

That’s a little less than competitors like Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, but still plenty for a weekend of camping, as I had mentioned in an earlier review.

Fast-forward to 2016, and the big change is Ford’s new SYNC 3 infotain-ment system. This may not seem a big deal, unless you’ve tried its nicky My-Ford Touch predecessor.

Menus for audio, climate, phone, navi-

gation, apps and vehicle settings are nicely organized under six large but-tons on the eight-inch touchscreen. It’s easy to see and operate, which is great for those who’ve graduated to reading glasses or are doing this from a moving vehicle.

Pinch and swipe functions, which work like your smart phone or tablet, also help make the job easier – espe-cially when zooming in and out of the navigation map.

Climate can be controlled by touch-screen, or more quickly with the nearby knobs and buttons. Sometimes the old-

er ways are still better. All this electronic wizardry is nice, but

what resonates even more with families who buy these vehicles is the Escape’s comfortable and spacious interior.

Indeed, the passenger cabin is a nice place to be with its premium materials and abundant soft touch throughout the doors and dash, not to mention at-tractive upholstery – at least in my 4WD SE tester with its optional leather/fabric seating, with 10-way power adjust and heating up front.

Unlike some compact SUVs, there’s Continued on page

abundant legroom in the second row, and the rear seats recline. A pull of the same lever also makes them drop for a flat cargo floor.

Standard equipment on my SE model includes manual air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering with cruise and audio controls, 12-volt and 110-volt power outlets, automatic halogen headlamps, six-speaker audio, rear spoiler, 17-inch alloys, chrome dual exhausts, and heated side mirrors with inte-grated turn signals and puddle lamps.

Pricing is a bit complicated, as the mid-trim Es-cape ranges from $25,999 for the 2.5-litre FWD SE to $29,699 for the 2.0-litre Ecoboost 4WD SE. Best to check the website for current deals.

Mine also included a $1,750 panoramic sunroof and $1,350 chrome package, the latter really add-ing panache with brightwork in the door handles, side mirrors, roof rails and grille – not to mention big 19-inch chrome alloys.

I also had a power liftgate ($500), which is stan-dard in Titanium trim where it confers the added benefit of being activated by a wave of the foot.

Every Escape gets Ford’s proprietary MyKey sys-tem, which allows parents to set limits and remind-ers for their young drivers. You can mute the audio system, limit the top speed and have the warning chime drive them bonkers until all seatbelts are buckled.

Also standard is the 1.6-litre Ecoboost with six-speed automatic transmission. My SE, however, came with the more potent 2.0 litre engine ($1,000),

delivering plenty of punch off the line – particularly in Sport mode with its sharper throttle response and later shifts.

And with its precise steering, quick reflexes and firmer suspension than is typical in this segment, this vehicle drives more like a hatchback than a small truck.

Which is great for those who still enjoy driving, but need a family hauler.

In the new 2015 Escape, Ford has found the right balance between performance and practicality, with arguably the most handsome ride in its seg-ment – and now an infotainment system that no longer annoys.

The Escape SE 4WD wears a sporty roof spoiler and dual exhaust finishers. It appears leaner and more athletic than its predecessor, despite having more cargo space. abundant soft-touch materials in the doors and dash, metallic accents and “ice blue” accent lighting all contribute to a premium interior.

Celebrating its debut next week at the Frankfurt International Auto Show, the new 911 Carrera is taking performance and everyday usability to new heights.

Innovative flat-six engines derived from four decades of turbocharging used in racing and on road cars not only make this the fastest 911 Carrera ever, but also provide abundant torque for superior passing power.

An advanced chassis offering an even more sophisticated combination of ride comfort and performance characterizes the handling of the new 911.

For the first time, rear-axle steering is available as an option for the Carrera S, significantly enhancing its already su-perb agility.

These improvements reduce the lap time on the North Loop of the Nurbur-gring to just 7 minutes and 30 seconds, making it 10 seconds faster than the pre-vious Carrera S.

Many exterior features of the 911 Car-rera have been visually refined from new headlights with four-point daytime run-ning lights to integrated door handle recesses, a redesigned rear deck lid with vertical louvers, and new rear lights – including the characteristic four-point brake lights.

The completely new engine genera-tion featuring twin-turbo technology enhances the driving pleasure of the 911 Carrera and provides a 20 hp increase compared to the previous models.

The 3.0-litre engine in the standard Carrera now develops 370 hp.

Using turbochargers with modified compressor wheels, a model-specific exhaust system, and a different tune for the engine management system, the 911 Carrera S delivers 420 hp from the same displacement.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera and Car-rera S engines are characterized by sig-nificantly increased torque. Offering up to 331 lb/ft and 368 lb/ft respectively.

Finding a trustworthy and experienced real estateagent can help make the process of buying ahome much less stressful.

How to Find theRIGHT REAL ESTATE AGENT

effort. Those in the market for an agent to help navigate the home buying process shouldconsider the following tips.

FIND A BUYER’S AGENT.Real estate agents are often affiliated with sellers instead of buyer’s. This means their primarygoal is to help the seller and not the buyer. When shopping around for a real estate agent, askcompanies about their buyer’s agents. Buyers should always have someone with their interestsin mind, and not the interests of the sellers.

FIND SOMEONE WITH A TRACK RECORD.Real estate can be an exciting and financially rewarding industry in which to work. As a result, lots of people want to be real estate agents, even though few succeed and last a long time. When interviewing real estate agents, inquire about their history in the business. A moreexperienced agent will make things far less stressful and easier, and a long career indicatesthey are good at what they do.

A real estate agent with a long history in the business will likely be a full-time agent as well.Prospective buyers should look for a full-time agent, which is not as common as some buyersmight think. Many agents work part-time, and buyers could receive less attention as a result.

DON’T PLACE TOO MUCH EMPHASISON AGENCY SIZE.Real estate agencies come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to ability, the size of theagency should not factor in. A smaller independent agency can be just as qualified and reliableas one of the major franchise agencies. Buyers who find someone they trust should go withthat person, regardless of how big or small their agency is.

GET A REFERRAL.Friends and family members who have been through the buying process before might be greatresources. Buyers looking in “Town X” who have friends or family already living there shouldconsult those friends or family and ask for any agent referrals. Those relocating because ofwork should ask their company to refer an agent. Chances are companies have relocatedemployees in the past and might have a strong relationship with an agency in town.

Buying a home is often a difficult thing to do. The stress of making such a big financialcommitment is a struggle for many home buyers, whether they have purchased a homein the past or are doing so for the first time.

One way to make the process a lot less anxiety-ridden is to work with a real estateagent you can trust. Those who have previously purchased a home might already havea strong relationship with a real estate agent. But for those moving out of their currentlocation or buying for the first time, finding the right real estate agent requires some

Imagine waking up tomor-row morning to find an enve-lope sitting in your mailbox.

You notice it is a little thicker than the others, with only your name written on the front and no return address.

You open it to discover that it is filled with hundred dollar bills, 50 of them to be exact. Five thousand dollars has magically appeared in your life and it is yours to do with as you please.

I think it’s fair to say that all of us would feel grateful in that moment– if not deliri-ously happy – to have received such a gift.

Yet for many of us, that moment will fade rather quickly as other thoughts about our newfound fortune begin to permeate our mind.

How do we buy that new car or house we want with five thousand dollars?

How can we celebrate this windfall when it only amounts to 20 per cent of what we already owe?

Sure it’s nice to have the money but many of us are say-ing to ourselves “I wish it was more.”

What we want far out-weighs what we have received and even though we’ve won, inside, we can still feel like we’re losing.

I believe we do the same thing with love as well. What we think is owed to us from a past that is peppered in pain is getting in the way of appre-ciating what we’re being given now by those around us.

Although we receive little

gifts of love and kindness, our thoughts about it can some-times boil down to the same feeling: It’s not enough.

Greek philosopher Epicu-rus once said: “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.”

Whether it’s with your rela-tionships or the material pos-sessions in your life, much of what you had wished for in your youth has, or is coming to fruition.

Yet unlike your bank account, you have the power to decide what your current balance is at any time.

If you look at what is miss-ing, you will continue to feel in debt and see nothing but red.

But if you begin to appre-ciate what you have in your life, not only will you feel like you’re in the black, but your interest will grow as well.

So why not choose to be grateful?

If you want a chance to win tickets to the upcom-ing Magna Wild Wild West Showdown or Hoedown, saddle up and head to Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket Thursday evening.

However, before you go, better check out Magna’s web, Twitter and Facebook sites for clues.

Beginning at 5 p.m. Sept 10, a cutout of “Cowboy Frank Stonach” will be post-ed somewhere in the mall. You have an hour to find Frank at one of three dif-ferent locations from 5 – 6

p.m., 6:15 – 7:15 p.m. and 7:30 – 8:30 p.m.

If your sleuthing skills are correct, walk up to Frank’s handler and say, “Yeehaw! I found Frank!” This will let them know that you are par-ticipating in the contest and not just a curious bystander

The first two people to arrive at each different Frank location will win two Hoedown tickets to either The Jim Cuddy Band (Sept. 18) or Dallas Smith and The Roadhammers (Sept. 19).

The first to arrive choos-es which tickets they want; second to arrive receives the remaining pair of tickets.

The Magna folks will take your picture and share it on Facebook and Twitter, then move on to the next loca-tion

If no one manages to Find Frank within the one-hour time period, he will move on to the next loca-tion without a winner

There are 12 tickets avail-able, plus seven bonus tick-ets donated by Upper Cana-da Mall staff for Sept. 18.

Like Magna on Face-book at facebook.com/magnahoedown, follow on Twitter:@magnahoedown or visit hoedown.ca/show-down.

Coldham to carry Liberal banner in Thornhill riding

Nancy Coldham is the Liberal candidate in the rid-ing of Thornhill.

She and her husband have raised two daughters in their Thornhill home and have lived here since 1988.

She is an entrepreneur with three decades of small business experience.

On her Facebook page, she criticizes the Conserva-tive Party: “The way to build a stronger economy is not through the Conservatives’ proposed tax cuts for the wealthiest among us or by returning us to a petro-econ-omy. We are seeing what that leads to in our current reces-sion — dropping Canadian dollar, increasing unemploy-ment, and wicked national deficit.”

Instead, she explains that

we must expand our econ-omy and return Canada to its roots as an enterprising, entrepreneurial nation.

She also mentions the importance of innovation to expand the economy and return to prosperity.

“That means embracing the reality that the environ-ment and the economy are allies, not enemies. We need a government that under-stands clean technology is an area of Canadian expertise that makes us globally com-petitive,” she says.

Coldham says her two great passions are advanc-ing women’s entrepreneur-ship here and in post-con-flict countries and helping women run for political office.

Contact [email protected] or go to nancy-coldham.liberal.ca for more information.

The other candidates in the riding are Conservative Peter Kent and the NDP’s Lorne Cherry.

Calling all shut-ins to Rosh Hashanah at Thornhill condo

By Simone [email protected]

Shut-ins should not be shut out.

No one should be shut out of celebrating one of the holi-est times in the Jewish cal-endar — Rosh Hashanah — literally the head or start of a Jewish new year.

Herman Silver, an 87-year-old Thornhill resident, believes everyone should have access to the traditions and rituals of Rosh Hashanah. So, he asked whether someone from the Jewish organization Chabad Lubavitch would visit his Thornhill condo building on Townsgate Drive to blow the shofar (a ram’s horn) for those who could not go to synagogue.

That was four years ago.“They love it. The feedback

is fantastic. People attend and appreciate it,” Silver said. “It is a double header. It is a mitz-

vah — having a shofar blown and getting together, seeing other people they don’t get to see.”

The seniors in Silver’s building at 7 Townsgate Dr., north of Bathurst Street and Steeles Avenue, have benefit-ed from this service, he said.

“They are ecstatic that it is there,” Silver said. “It is a mitz-vah. A lot of shut-ins can’t go out. They want to hear the shofar.”

Many seniors are so enthusiastic, that they show up half an hour before the shofar blowing, which nor-mally happens at about 4 p.m., Silver said.

The shofar will be blown at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14 and Tuesday, Sept 15 at Silver’s condo building on Townsgate Drive.

The ceremony is the most important part of the holi-day service, said Rabbi Moshe Spalter, administrator of Cha-

bad Lubavitch of Ontario.Silver knows how impor-

tant the shofar blowing is to seniors in his building.

“It means a lot ... This is one of the most important parts of the service. This is the awakening,” he said.

Silver participates in the event by offering people food traditionally eaten during Rosh Hashanah — a plate of apples and honey, grape juice and honey cake. He also encourages residents to invite their grandchildren.

Chabad moved to Thorn-hill 32 years ago. Since then, it has provided shofar blow-ing for people in hospitals or shut-ins, those who cannot make it out to a synagogue. Around the world, Chabad began providing shofar blow-ing 60 years ago, Rabbi Spal-ter said.

Contact Rabbi Moshe Spalter at [email protected] for more information.

he doorbell woke up Lucy Bucci at 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 29, 2014.

Her son, Michael, hadn’t arrived home to

Richmond Hill following recre-ation hockey in Scarborough.

She went to the door, wonder-ing who it could be?

Her first foggy thought was Michael had forgotten his house key or maybe her daughter, Melis-sa, had forgotten hers.

But when she peeked through the window, Lucy saw two police officers and two women from vic-tim services.

She soon got the news every parent dreads.

“Your son was in a terrible car accident,” the officer said. “He succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.”

Lucy said her husband, Bruce, with serious health concerns of his own, was hysterical at the news and her daughter was frozen stiff at the top of the stairs.

As for Lucy, her brain simply shut down, then and there.

The next day at 7 a.m., she went to the coroners’ office in Toronto to identify her only son.

“I saw him on a screen. The detectives were still there. He was just smiling, with a beautiful little smile with his eyes closed. He looked angelic,” Lucy said.

“It’s just a horrible, horrible

thing to go through.”Lucy desperately wanted to

know what caused the single car crash on Elgin Mills Road in Rich-

“Adored by children, universally respected and an inspiration to her peers, Mrs. McCluskey was a tireless volunteer, quick to defl ect the praise heaped on her.”

mond Hill that took Michael’s life at the age of 27.

But nobody could give her any answers.

“It eats away at you — initially, every day I was searching and searching for an answer. I met with the coroner twice.

“No alcohol, no sickness, no drugs, no texting. How did this happen? Is it mechanical? Is it human error? What caused this? The officer stated the only person who knows is not here to tell us,” she said.

Lucy only has memories of Michael now, the young man she remembers vividly.

“I miss that boy. I miss his walking in saying, ‘Hello, hello, what’s for dinner, what are we eatin’ tonight,’ cause he was all about food,” she said in a recent phone conversation.

Michael was the kind of man she said, who, “no matter where he went, he stopped and spoke to every single person, even if he hadn’t seen them in 15 years, he stopped and talked to them.”

“So many people in the com-munity have told me he came up to them and said, ‘How’s it going, how are you doing?’

Michael was such a regu-lar young man, with goals and dreams of the future. He attended elementary school at Our Lady Help of Christian and Father Henri Nouwen and went to high school at St Theresa of Liseuix. With fiancée Jessica Couto, he had plans to marry this past April. The two had been together five years at the time of the crash, had pur-

chased a house, were saving for their future together and were big Maple Leaf fans.

Michael was a Red Seal electri-cian, helped out his grandparents in Caledon by mowing the grass in summer and covering the air-conditioner in winter.

He was a true outdoorsman, according to his mom, a videogra-pher who started a small business, Camvast Productions with two friends doing videos and photog-raphy and produced a book called Glory and Triumph. His mom called him “a mover and shaker.”

Lucy and Melissa have had a tough year. Bruce, who has scle-roderma, an autoimmune disease that is a chronic hardening and tightening of the skin, is now terminally ill with lung cancer. Just 54, Bruce is back and forth to Sunnybrook Hospital and is very sick.

“I haven’t been able to take a breath,” Lucy said in mid-August.

She has plans to have a memo-rial for Michael, but they are on hold for now. She only knows that she wishes she had travelled more with her son when she had the chance.

“I was one of these parents, I would read about it in the paper and hear it on the news and I’d say, ‘Oh my God, that poor family and on and on.’

“When I went through this I said, ‘Oh, this wasn’t supposed to be me.’”
