A specialsession for farmers to present their innovative ideas were also held.

The valedictory function started with Dr C Balachandran, Vice Chancellor TANUVAS deliveringthe valedictory address in the session chaired by Dr Prasanth P, Organising Committee Chairman ofKVSC 2018 . Message from the President and General Secretary

Dr. Kurian K Jacob, President Dr. P S Shameem Abubaker, General Secretary

We whole heartedly appreciate the great effort made by IVA, Kannur unit for the conduct

of our prestigious event Kerala Veterinary Science Congress in a grand manner. This was our last

state program for the year 2018 and that too finished with great enthusiasm. This year KVSC

received 153 papers which is a record. The venue was excellent. We are very much grateful for the

presence of our Hon’ble Minister for Health and Social Justice, Smt. K. K. Shylaja teacher, Hon’ble

Member of Parliament from Kannur, Smt. P. K. Sreemathy teacher, Secretary to Government

(AH & AD) Sri. Anil X, IAS, TANUVAS Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) C. Balachandran, Dean of CVAS,

Pookode Prof. (Dr.) Koshy John, delegate from U.K. Dr. Navaratnam Parthiban and other eminent

delegates from within and outside the state. We really congratulate all the winners of the 10th

KVSC.

We had our last state executive on 10th November at Kannur on the sidelines of KVSC and

we decided to convene our 2nd State Committee on 9th December at Thrissur. The district units

were given enough instructions to complete subscription and conduct district level annual general

body meetings before 15th December 2018.

We request all the vets to actively participate in the district and state annual general body

meeting and also elect office bearers for 2019 without any bias.

We are marching to our state convention at Pagoda resorts, Alappuzha on 22nd and 23rd

December with a perception that we have done our duties satisfactorily.

We also express our sincere thanks to our state and district level office bearers and all our

members for the support given for the activities during 2018.

Message from the Editor’s Desk

Guidance of experienced President and General Secretary of IVA, Kerala helped me to comeout with 11 issues without hitches, hoping that the 12th issue will be convention special.

Friends, let us accept the bare fact that there is no other professional body than our own

Indian Veterinary Association which will be the beacon of hope in our professional enhancementand capacity building. IVAK as an umbrella organisation of vets of Kerala has given a platform for

all to participate in its activities. I appreciate those who utilised the opportunity to grow professionally,

update the knowledge and enjoyed working as a team. IVAK could bring out the talent of many

Vets either professional or personal through its activities. I have stood with this association all

these years in my professional career and the association through the various torch bearers has

always been striving hard in shaping up our status in the society. Skeptics on the other hand may

have a hand-few grievances to raise which needs redressal from not only those at the helm of

affairs but also from those who raised it since it is a joint effort to pay dividends in future. Collective

bargaining will outwit sectoral thoughts or individually vested interests in the long run if it is

meticulously planned and executed .If the latter is to take an upper hand, be prepared to be a

group of professionals queued up in a lemming line to disaster. An inspiring mind and a going attitude

are attributes which one has to keep up close always.

Let us brighten up the lustre of our association by active participation and resounding

togetherness and shut the doors for dissidence and factional thinking. IVAK has always come out

with practical and realistic suggestions/recommendations in issues affecting the sector. 2018 sawIVAK being sidelined and ignored by few due to misunderstandings and vested interest. De

motivating and negative strokes did not pull back the organisation from its activities as evident

from the report of activities I received from various units for the news letter. Let the new rays of

2019, bring back the glory of oneness among vets and let not slumber cripple the path to progress.

I thank Dr. Vinod Kumar. K, Assistant Professor, CVAS, Mannuthy for the technical articles

and Dr. Sumil B S for the thought provoking and informative quiz. Once again, thanking all state anddistrict office bearers for the prompt reporting and making various issues of news letter a reality.

ANAL ADENITIS IN A DOGDr Vinod Kumar. K

Presenting Complaint- The dog was anorectic since three days with infrequent vomiting andstraining to pass feces. Owners suspected obstruction because of the dog’s habit of eating toys etc.

Signalment- Canine. Labrador. 6 years, male, white.

History- The dog was kept indoors mostly. The diet consisted of Royal Canin pet food (125g).cooked rice mixed with shred chicken and 150ml milk. Symptoms started three days back, with the dogrefusing food. It was restless and vomited partially digested food 3-4 times. It was straining to passfeces, and hard fecal balls were voided.

Examination results- T- 104.3 C. Palpation of neck region did not elicit any response. Abdomenwas distended and hard fecoliths could be found distending throughout the descending, transverse andascending colon. Palpation other intestinal loops did not present any significant findings. A well lubricatedfinger inserted into the rectum revealed hard fecoliths, but no enlargement of the prostate gland. Painwas elicited during the process. The anal glands were expressed by squeezing the anal opening at 3 and9 ‘o’ clock angles, to observe cheesy sweet smelling exudate.

Laboratory examination- Fecal sample and blood smear examination did not reveal anysignificant findings. Leukocytosis with granulocytosis (16000 cells/microliter) were the significantvariations observed in CBC.

Diagnosis- Anal adenitis

Treatment- Inj. Amoxycillin- clauvulanic acid @ 12.5mg/kg bwti/v, followed by oral dosing atevening for 5 days. InjPantaprazole @ 0.9mg/kg bwti/v, injMetacloperamide @0.9mg/kg i/v, Inj DNSand RL @ 10 ml/kg bwti/v for 3 days and proctocidyl ointment 30 g for external application into therectum for 7 days. Addition of 3-4 chappathis or oats (100g) into the diet and cut down of chicken fromit was advised. Lactulose suspension was advised for 5 days @ 0.5 ml/kg bwt bid. Result- Animalstarted to take feed from the next day. Vomiting stopped and loose feces was passed for 5 days till thelactulose was terminated. Discharged as cured with advise for daily exercise.

Discussion- A diet high in protein and low in fiber, especially in sedentary dogspredisposes foranal adenitis because of the reduced motility in the lower GI tract. Secondary infection with S. aureus orS. pseudointermedius leading to inflammatory changes of anal glands causes the condition. Differentialdiagnosis is from obstruction and prostatic hypertrophy, especially in old male dogs. If fecoliths can bepalpated throughout the colon, then obstruction can be ruled out. Radiography, if available is invaluablein this. Inserting a finger per rectum in male dogs to rule out prostate enlargement is required, butshould be done under proper restraint of the dog. Anal glands are located at 3 and 9 ‘o’ clock anglearound the anal opening. Cover anal opening with a large wad of cotton and squeeze to express them.Sweet smelling exudate is diagnostic. Betalactamase inhibitor-combined antibiotics are necessary sincestaphylococcus secrete it, and laxatives and topical anti-inflammatory ointments are a must.Metacloperamide controls vomiting and aid in movement of ingesta.

Breeding, College of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, Mannuthy was conferred with Prof. P K Pani

Award-2017 on 15th November, 2018 at the 35th National Conference of Indian Poultry Science

Association conducted at ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair, Andaman

& Nicobar Islands, for her award winning research article entitled ”Egg production curves and their

prediction through mathematical models in a random bred broiler breeder control

population” authored by Bindya Liz Abraham and H.N.N. Murthy, and published in the Indian Journal

of Poultry Science, 2017.,  52(1): 16-21. The Award carries a gold medal, citation and cash award.

‘The shadow of the steam engine’ releasedSri. Shashi Tharoor, the eminent author and Member of Parliament,

released the book authored by Dr Vestin Verghese, ‘The shadow of the

steam engine’ at Thiruvananthapuram on the 2nd of November. “I will gift

this book to my grand-daughter in the US,” said a visibly excited Tharoor.

Dr. Vestin, a vet from Thrissur, is also a noted children’s writer. The book is

a thriller for children over ten years of age and adults who are young at

heart. The novel was a bestseller at the Sharjah international book fair and

has been selected as ‘Book of the month’ for December; by DC books. The plot revolves around two children who lose

their home to the tsunami and take refuge in an abandoned steam engine. They are assailed by a sinister figure of

darkness from the adjacent forest who is determined to oust them from their home. The novel is fast paced and is

leavened with a sprinkling of humour. The novel is currently available in all DC Book stores across Kerala and also at the
