In just over three years, Royal Mail and Intelligent AR haverevolutionized the world of variable value stamp collecting.The launch of the new ‘Post & Go’ philatelic kiosks duringSpring Stampex 2014 in London was the start of a newphase and its issues have set the «standard» worldwide.

During these last years, Intelligent AR has presented itsequipment at several international philatelic events and topostal administrations and philatelic services worldwide.This accumulated experience has enabled the company todevelop new applications for their kiosks and also to createa family of modular solutions with new postal and philatelicequipment.

A clear example is the new DKU or Desktop Kiosk Unitpresented for the first time in September at the ChinaInternational Collection Expo 2017, in Nanjing. The DKU is amodular desktop equipment with similar features to kiosks.The version shown in Nanjing was made up of a touchscreen monitor and a unit including the computer and twodirect thermal printers for stamp and receipt printing.However, its modular design and specific software allow thiscomputer solution to be adapted according to the needs ofthe client. It can thus be used for the direct printing ofvariable value stamps from values selected by the user or, inconjunction with integrated scales, the printing of stampsaccording to the weight, destination and type of shipment.This equipment can be installed at post office counters andcan be used by philatelic services, and depending on itsconfiguration, can be operated by postal employees or bythe general public.

Without doubt this is a great arrangement and solutionthat could be very attractive to postal operators and also tomany philatelic services. Unlike kiosks, which require carefulhandling and installation, which can be expensive, the newDKU is a small unit that can be easily transported andinstalled at philatelic events; and I do not doubt that this willbe the case.

En poco más de tres años, Royal Mail e Intelligent AR hanrevolucionado el mundo del coleccionismo de sellos de valorvariable. La presentación de los nuevos quioscos filatélicos ‘Post& Go’ durante la Spring Stampex 2014 de Londres supuso elinicio una nueva etapa, y sus emisiones son ya un referentemundial.

Durante estos años, Intelligent AR ha presentado sus equiposen varios eventos filatélicos internacionales, y a operadorespostales y servicios filatélicos de todo el mundo. La experienciaacumulada le ha permitido desarrollar nuevas aplicaciones parasus quioscos, y también crear una familia de solucionesmodulares con nuevos equipos postales y filatélicos.

Un claro ejemplo es el nuevo DKU, o Desktop Kiosk Unit,presentado por primera vez en septiembre en la feria CICE 2017de Nanjing, en China. El DKU es un equipo modular desobremesa con prestaciones similares a los quioscos. La versiónmostrada en Nanjing estaba formada por una pantalla táctil yuna unidad que incluye el ordenador y dos impresoras térmicasdirectas para la impresión de sellos y recibos. Pero suconcepción modular y un software dedicado permiten adaptaresta solución informática de acuerdo a las necesidades delcliente, pudiendo ser utilizado para la impresión directa desellos de valor variable a partir de unos valores seleccionadospor el usuario, o integrar una balanza que permita obtener unsigno de franqueo de acuerdo al peso, destino y tipo de envío.Este equipo puede ser instalado en oficinas postales y tambiénutilizado por servicios filatélicos y, dependiendo de suconfiguración, puede ser operado por empleados postales opor el público en general. Sin duda, se trata de una propuestaque podría ser muy atractiva para administraciones postales,pero también para muchos servicios filatélicos; a diferencia delos quioscos, que requieren un transporte especial y unainstalación que pueden ser muy costosos, el nuevo DKU es unequipo de dimensiones reducidas que puede transportarsefácilmente, lo que permitiría su fácil instalación en eventosfilatélicos. Y no dudo que así será.

En 2016, 133.000 cruceristasdesembarcaron en el puerto, en su mayor parte durante unaspocas horas, y gastaron 4,2 millones de libras en compras yactividades diversas. Sin duda, un sector muy importante en laeconomía de esta pequeña isla del Canal de la Mancha, aloeste de las costas de Normandía.

En 2017, sin viajes internacionales programados yaprovechando el largo periodo de inactividad entre las dosStampex de Londres,el servicio filatélicode Guernsey Postdecidió trasladar suquiosco GG01GG01GG01GG01GG01 a laisla, e instalarlotemporalmente en laoficina postal deSmith Street, en elcentro histórico deSaint Peter Port.

El quiosco filatélicoGG01GG01GG01GG01GG01 fue situadojunto a la puerta de acceso a la oficina postal el 21 deabril de 2017, y permaneció allí hasta el 31 de agosto.Durante este periodo, el equipo estuvo emitiendo selloscon el diseño básico ‘Guernsey flag’, con el nombre dela oficina ‘ Smith StreetSmith StreetSmith StreetSmith StreetSmith Street ‘, por una de las impresoras, y lapreciosa serie temática ‘Guernsey BailiwickLighthouses’ por la otra. El diseño ‘Guernsey flag’también pudo obtenerse emitido con el equipo B002B002B002B002B002.

In collaboration with the Guernsey TouristBoard the philatelic service decided to takeadvantage of the marketing potential of the kioskin order to promote tourism and attract theinterest of cruise passengers, by including thename of the visiting ships on the lighthouse seriesof stamps. These ‘cruise’specific stamps are onlyprinted on the day theship (or ships) call atSaint Peter Port. In a littleover four months, theisland received 50 cruiseship visits. Some of thesevisited the island several times duringthis period e.g. like The CaribbeanPrincess, that visited Saint Peter Porton nine occasions.

The unprecedented features ofthese issues caused all sorts ofreactions from collectors. Thoughinitially aimed at cruise ship visitors,Guernsey Post had not planned tooffer all these special issues tocollectors as a standing order.However, as expected, very few cruiseship passengers visited the post officeto acquire the stamps and notunsurprisingly many collectors anddealers contacted the philatelic service requesting all thedifferent special imprints (110 standing order strips). At theother extreme, some collectors, disappointed with thequantity and nature of these issues, decided to completelyabandon the ‘Post & Go’ collection of this administration.

With regard to the ship names printed onthe stamps, we have identified three maindifferent varieties (images next page); (1) stampswith just the ship’s name, (2) with the ship’sname preceded by the text ‘ Welcome to:Welcome to:Welcome to:Welcome to:Welcome to: ‘,added when the name was very short and(3) with two ship’s names, when two cruisesvisited the island on the same day.

Cartor Security Printing, a company specializing in stampprinting, participated in the Nanjing exhibition with a standexhibiting its production together with the Intelligent ARphilatelic equipment. CICE 2017 (article in

VARIABLE 46 46 46 46 46) was the fourth internationalphilatelic event in which Cartor hadinstalled an IAR philatelic kiosk.

At the Nanjing fair they also presented,for the first time, the new DKU (DesktopKiosk Unit) developed by Intelligent AR forthe printing of variable value stamps. Withsimilar features to philatelic kiosks, thiscomputer system consists of a touchscreen monitor and a unit including asmall computer and two direct thermalprinters for stamps and receipts.

Cartor produced rolls oflabels with the exhibition andcompany logos and, in thebackground, a grey-tonedimage of the Buddhist templeof Jiming, one of the oldesttemples in the city. And theselabels have two interestingnew features. Cartor addedholographic material aroundits logo to a part of themanufactured labels (right

image below), showing differentprinting options. In addition,the labels for Nanjing are notstuck on the usual yellow

silicone coatedbacking paper buton a transparentrelease liner (film).The use of this typeof thinner backingpaper allows themanufacture of rollswith a larger

number of labels in the same volume and also reducesmaintenance thus optimizing the thermal printers operation.

Both types of equipment, kiosks and counter units, workwith the same programme or software application, use thesame rolls of labels and are fitted with the same type ofprinters making the printing on stamps or labels identical.

Cartor fabricó rollos de etiquetas con el logotipo dela exposición y de la empresa y, al fondo, una imagenen tonos grises del templo budista de Jiming, uno delos más antiguos de la ciudad. Y dos interesantesnovedades: A modo de prueba y para mostrardiferentes opciones de impresión, Cartor añadiómaterial holográfico alrededor de su logotipo en unaparte de las etiquetas fabricadas (derecha). Además, lasetiquetas para Nanjing no están adheridas sobre elhabitual papel soporte siliconado amarillo, sino sobreun soporte (film) transparente. A nivel de fabricación,el uso de este tipode soporte más finopermite fabricarrollos con un mayornúmero de etiquetasen el mismovolumen, y ademásreduce elmantenimiento yoptimiza el funcionamiento de las impresoras térmicas.

Ambos tipos de equipo, quioscos y equipos de sobremesa,utilizan un mismo programa o aplicación informática, losmismos rollos de etiquetas, e imprimen con el mismo tipo deimpresoras, por lo que la impresión sobre los sellos o etiquetases idéntica.

The first National PostalMuseum was opened in 1966at King Edward Building, theformer headquarters of theGeneral Post Office near St.Paul’s Cathedral, in London.The building was sold in 1998and the museum closed.

In 2004, Royal Mailtransferred the museum’scollection to the PostalHeritage Trust, an independentcharity which is alsoresponsible for the Royal Mailarchives, through The BritishPostal Museum & Archive.Twelve years after its creation,in February 2016, The B.P.M.A.was renamed ‘The PostalMuseum’ (see article published in

VARIABLE 40 40 40 40 40), and so began theconstruction of a new museumin a nearby building, next tothe Mount Pleasant MailCenter. The new PostalMuseum was opened on July 28th 2017, and includes a visit tothe historic Mail Rail, the first underground electric driverlessrailway, which was used totransport mail between the variousLondon sorting centers between1927 and 2003.

Having been operating sinceMarch 2014, the Post and Go +A001A001A001A001A001 kiosk has been witness to allthe changes and developments atthe London Museum, all reflected inthe machines’ output of ATM issues.The kiosk was moved to the shop ofthe new postal museum in mid-July2017. On August 16th 2017, HMS QueenElizabeth berthed for the first time at itshome port, Her Majesty’s Naval Base,Portsmouth, one of three operating bases inthe United Kingdom for the Royal Navy.

HMS Queen Elizabeth is the first of twonew aircraft carriers, the largest warshipsbuilt for the Royal Navy, capable of carryingup to 40 aircraft. Its construction began in2009, undergoing its first sea trials in June2017, and finally being commissioned onDecember 7th 2017.

Of course, the celebrations for the arrivalof the aircraft carrier to Portsmouth did notgo unnoticed by Royal Mail, who wanted tocommemorate this event with two newspecial temporary imprints on the stamps issued by the A002A002A002A002A002Post & Go kiosk. In mid-August 2017, the machine was movedto the Visitors Center of The National Museum of the RoyalNavy, in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, next to the navalbase. From August19th, the stampsissued with the‘Machin’ definitivedesign, included the‘Royal Navy QueenRoyal Navy QueenRoyal Navy QueenRoyal Navy QueenRoyal Navy QueenElizabeth II CarrierElizabeth II CarrierElizabeth II CarrierElizabeth II CarrierElizabeth II Carrier’imprint and themuseum’s logo in areduced format, while the stamps issued with the ‘Union flag’design included the text ‘Royal Navy QE II CarrierRoyal Navy QE II CarrierRoyal Navy QE II CarrierRoyal Navy QE II CarrierRoyal Navy QE II Carrier’.

However, the correct name ofthe aircraft carrier is ‘QueenElizabeth’ and not ‘Queen ElizabethII’ (actually, the ship was namedafter Queen Elizabeth I, in a July2014 naming ceremony by QueenElizabeth II), so it was decided tochange the texts printed on thestamps. hall of the Business Design Centre, in Islington. This majorphilatelic fair is organized by the Philatelic Traders’ Society(PTS), in collaboration with Royal Mail.

The show once again brought together more than 100international philatelic dealers, auction houses and specialistpublishers. Various philatelic groups organized their annualmeetings during the fair.

The large Royal Mail stand was located at the back of theexhibition hall, opposite the national philatelic exhibitionorganized by The Association of British Philatelic Societies(ABPS).

In 2017 for the third consecutive year Royal Mail set up itsstand at the conferences of the three main UK political parties.Viewed as inappropriate by some or with suspicion by othercountries, in the United Kingdom these conferencesconstitute a great opportunity for direct promotion bycompanies, trade associations and lobbyists.

The Labour Party held its conference from September 24th

to 27th, in Brighton. The Conservative Party held theirs fromOctober 1st to 4th, in Manchester and the Scottish NationalParty, from October 8th to 10th, in Glasgow. With a large number ofcollectors interested in thissubject, various philatelicservices have marked this anniversary with the issue ofdifferent related philatelic products; among them, GibraltarPost with a series of six ‘Post & Go’ designs.

Con motivo de la emisión de la nueva serie temática deseis diseños, Gibraltar Post decidió modificar -una vez más-los valores programados en todos sus quioscos ‘Post & Go’.A partir del 13 de septiembre de 2017, el quiosco GI01GI01GI01GI01GI01instalado en Autumn Stampex estaba programado con seistarifas postales; las cinco tarifas postales básicas, en elprimer tramo de peso, para las cinco zonas postalesestablecidas en Gibraltar (correo local, España, Reino Unido,países europeos y resto del mundo), más la tarifa al resto delmundo para envíos hasta 40 g.

On the occasion of the issue of the newthematic series of six designs, GibraltarPost decided to modify -once again- thevalues programmed at all its ‘Post & Go’kiosks. From September 13th 2017, theGI01GI01GI01GI01GI01 kiosk installed at Autumn Stampexwas programmed with six postal rates; thefive basic postage rates, in the first weightstep, for the five postal zones establishedin Gibraltar (local mail, Spain, UnitedKingdom, European countries and the rest

of the world), plus the tariff to the rest of the world forshipments up to 40 g.

The first three designs of the series arededicated to the 250th anniversary of the St.John Lodge No. 115 in Gibraltar, with thebadges and banners used over the years.The first design shows the modern bannerused after the reformation started after1863. Next, the badge showing the phoenixrising from the ashes and the words‘Fidelitas Moribus Unitas’, used during aperiod of 20 years in which the then ‘Logiade San Juan el Fénix’ was intenselypersecuted by King Fernando VII. The thirddesign is the first banner of St. John LodgeNo. 115, when it was founded onSeptember 5th 1767 as a military Lodge bymembers of the 2nd Battalion of the RoyalArtillery. The fourth design is dedicated tothe 100th Anniversary of the foundation ofthe United Services Gibraltar Lodge No.3813, consecrated on November 21st 1917.This Lodge was initially formed by membersof His Majesty’s armed forces. The last twodesigns are dedicated to the 300 years ofthe creation of the United Grand Lodge ofEngland. In Gibraltar, the District GrandLodge of Gibraltar was established in 1752,and its headquarters are located at theGibraltar Masonic Institute (image). It isrepresented by the design of the local artistSebastian Rodriguez, with the image of theRock and the Europa Point Lighthouse. Thelast motif shows the 300th anniversary logo.

Con el cierre de Autumn Stampex 2017, la nueva serietemática pudo también obtenerse en el mismo quiosco GI01GI01GI01GI01GI01,

de vuelta a su ubicación permanente, y en los dosequipos instalados en Gibraltar (GI02GI02GI02GI02GI02 y GI03GI03GI03GI03GI03).Además, Gibraltar Philatelic Bureau puso a la ventauna edición especial con el código GI04GI04GI04GI04GI04.

Al igual que en febrero con la inclusión de textosdedicados a organizaciones benéficas locales (ver

artículo publicado en VARIABLE 44 44 44 44 44), Royal Gibraltar PostOffice aprovechó el retorno del quiosco GI01GI01GI01GI01GI01 aGibraltar House en Londres y la introducción de la

nueva serie temática paraprogramar un texto especialcomún en los tres quioscos ‘Post& Go’ en servicio. La impresiónespecial ‘ Cancer ResearchCancer ResearchCancer ResearchCancer ResearchCancer Research ‘celebra el 50 aniversario de lacreación de Cancer ResearchGibraltar, una organizaciónbenéfica dedicada a lainvestigación y sensibilizaciónsobre esta enfermedad. Estetexto se imprimía únicamente entodos los sellos emitidos con eldiseño ‘Year of the Rooster’,añadido a los identificadoreshabituales de los tres quioscos.

Tras la Stampex, el quioscoGI01GI01GI01GI01GI01 estuvo nuevamenteoperativo en Gibraltar House apartir del 19 de septiembre.

At the end ofAutumn Stampex2017, the newthematic seriescould also beobtained fromthe same GI01GI01GI01GI01GI01kiosk, back at itspermanent location and from thetwo machines installed in Gibraltar(GI02GI02GI02GI02GI02 and GI03GI03GI03GI03GI03). In addition, theGibraltar Philatelic Bureau launcheda special edition with the codeGI04GI04GI04GI04GI04.

As in February with the additionof the imprints dedicated to localcharities (see article in VARIABLE 44 44 44 44 44),the Royal Gibraltar Post Office tookadvantage of the return of the GI01GI01GI01GI01GI01kiosk to London’s Gibraltar Houseand the introduction of the newthematic series to program a specialimprint, in all the three ‘Post & Go’kiosks in operation. The special ‘ Cancer ResearchCancer ResearchCancer ResearchCancer ResearchCancer Research ‘ imprintcelebrates the 50th anniversary of the creation of the localbranch of Cancer Research, a charity dedicated to researchand awareness of thisdisease. This text wasprinted only on the stampsissued with the ‘Year of theRooster’ design and addedto the usual identifiers of thethree kiosks.

After Stampex, the GI01GI01GI01GI01GI01kiosk was again operationalat Gibraltar House fromSeptember 19th.

The change in the twokiosks in Gibraltar wasscheduled for the next day,on Wednesday, September20th. The rolls with the‘Gibraltar macaques’ designwere replaced by the new

As from September 20th, the GI02GI02GI02GI02GI02 andGI03GI03GI03GI03GI03 kiosks were programmed with twosets of six postage values each: the‘Collectors Strip’ LLLLL, printed on the newthematic series, includes the first six



postage rates for local mail, and the Collectors Strip’ IIIII, printedon labels with the ‘Year of the Rooster’ design, includes themain international postage rates, with the first postal tariffs toSpain, Europe and the rest of the world, and the first threepostage rates to the United Kingdom (see receipts).

For the second time only, the Gibraltar PhilatelicBureau decided to sell a ‘Post & Go’ issue, and puton sale local mail sets and pictorial first day covers ofthe new series dedicated to freemasonry, ‘Lodgeanniversaries’, with a special postmark. Very aptly,although the strips of stamps were printed on theGI02 GI02 GI02 GI02 GI02 kiosk installed inthe main post office(right), the machine wasespeciallyprogrammed to printthe stamps without thepost office identifierand with the specialcode GI04GI04GI04GI04GI04 on thestamps.

The design team atthe philatelicdepartment hasprepared the designsused for all Gibraltar‘Post & Go’ issues, andin 2015 sold sets andfirst day covers of thevery first design withthe flag of Gibraltar (seearticle in VARIABLE 38 38 38 38 38).

VARIABLE 44 44 44 44 44) y su primera vista internacionala la Internationale Briefmarken-Messe deEssen, en Alemania (VARIABLE 45 45 45 45 45), PostNLinstaló nuevamente el quiosco NL01NL01NL01NL01NL01 en laMultilaterale Hertogpost 2017.

La Multilaterale es un gran evento filatélicocreado a iniciativa de las siete asociacionesfilatélicas de países europeos de hablaalemana (Alemania, Austria, Liechtenstein,Luxemburgo y Suiza), además de Eslovenia ylos Países Bajos. Cada dos o tres años, uno delos países miembros organiza una granexposición filatélica internacional.

La exposición multilateral de 2017 secelebró durante el fin de semana del 25 al 28de agosto en el pabellón multiusosMaaspoort Sports & Events de ‘s-Hertogenbosch, al sur de los Países Bajos.Fue organizada por la KNBF (KoninklijkeNederlandse Bond vanFilatelistenverenigingen), laFederación Holandesa desociedades filatélicas, con lacolaboración de PostNL.

Sin lugar a dudas, laMultilaterale Hertogpost fue elmayor evento filatélicocelebrado en los Países Bajos,en 2017. Ocupando latotalidad del espaciodisponible, la gran exposiciónfilatélica internacional reuniómás de 1.000 cuadrospresentados por 160coleccionistas. After its launch at the Hilversum Filateliebeurs2017 (see article published in VARIABLE 44 44 44 44 44) and its firstinternational appearance at the InternationaleBriefmarken-Messe in Essen, Germany (VARIABLE4545454545), PostNL installed the NL01NL01NL01NL01NL01 kiosk at theMultilaterale Hertogpost 2017.

The Multilaterale is a large philatelic eventcreated on the initiative of the seven philatelicassociations of German-speaking Europeancountries (Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein,Luxembourg and Switzerland), as well as Sloveniaand The Netherlands. Every two or three years,one of the member countries organizes a large

international philatelicexhibition.

The 2017 MultilateralExhibition was held over theweekend of August 25th to 28th

at the Maaspoort Sports &Events multipurpose pavilion in‘s-Hertogenbosch, in the southof The Netherlands. It wasorganized by the KNBF(Koninklijke Nederlandse Bondvan Filatelistenverenigingen),the Dutch Federation ofphilatelic associations incollaboration with PostNL.

The NL01NL01NL01NL01NL01 kiosk was installed next to the Collect Club stand,the PostNL’s philatelic department. As on previous occasions,during the three days of the exhibition, the machine issuedstamps with the two definitive designs; ‘butterflies’ and ‘tulips’.These were only programmed with face value indicators fordomestic and international mail, respectively. All stampsissued at ‘s-Hertogenbosch include the ‘Multilaterale 2017Multilaterale 2017Multilaterale 2017Multilaterale 2017Multilaterale 2017‘special imprint, and the unique vertically printed code beginswith B8NL17 NL01-B8NL17 NL01-B8NL17 NL01-B8NL17 NL01-B8NL17 NL01- followed by the session and stampnumbers.

With no changes in the program, the machine only offeredstamps for domestic mailas singles and in groupsof two or five stamps, aswell as stamps forinternational mail assingles or in strips of five.

The PostNL’s CollectClub had two specialpostmarks on its stand, aspecial commemorativepostmark, and another s-Hertogenbosch postmarkwith the date of the firstday of the exhibition.
