Overview

Welcome to the release notes for the current update to the KodakDarwin 3.1 software. These release notes highlight the changes andimprovements, known problems, and limitations made in this release ofthe Darwin 3.1 Microsoft Windows edition of the software.

Note: It is highly recommended that you the read the Darwin online help for moreinformation.

Software and hardware requirementsDarwin 3.1 is not supported in virtualized environments such asParallels, VMware or in dual boot environments.

Software

● Adobe InDesign software (it is recommended that you install theentire Adobe InDesign CS4/CS5 software package)

● One of the following versions of the Microsoft Windows operatingsystem:

○ Microsoft Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2○ Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Home Edition○ Windows XP 64 bit○ Microsoft Windows Vista○ Microsoft Windows 7 (both 32 bit and 64 bit)

Hardware

● 1.8 GHz. or later processor● 500 MB available hard-disk space● 1 GB RAM

Note: Make sure that your computer complies with the software and hardwarerequirements for the InDesign CS4 or CS5 software.

Installing the Darwin 3.1 software

Requirements:

Important: Darwin 3.1 software is only compatible with Kodak InSite StoreFrontversion 6.0 and higher. If you have any previous version of InSite, you shouldcontinue working with Darwin 2.0.

Note: Darwin version 3.0 and 3.1 cannot reside on the same computer. When youinstall Darwin version 3.1, the previous version 3.0 is upgraded to 3.1.

Before you install Darwin version 3.1:

● Make sure you have Adobe InDesign CS4 or CS5 installed on yourcomputer.

● It is recommended that you do not install Darwin 3.1 on a computerwhere Darwin 2.0 is installed. However, it is possible to install theversions on the same computer, see section Switching betweenDarwin 2.0 and Darwin 3.1.

1. Copy the installer to your computer.

2. Make sure Adobe InDesign is closed, and double click the installer. .

3. When prompted, type your password for your computer.

4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Notes:

● The first time you install Darwin 3.1 on your computer, there are a numberof Microsoft 3rd party components that are installed. This may take up to10-15 minutes to install, where the installer does not indicate the progress.Do not try to force quit. If you are required to restart, the 3rd partyinstallations may occur during the login time and appear look longer thanusual. This occurs only for the login after that specific restart.

● If you have Darwin 2.0 installed, you will be prompted with to createbackup. If you select Yes, the Darwin 2.0 plug-ins are backed up to enableyou to switch back to Darwin 2.0. If you select No, the installation stops.

● You may be prompted to restart your computer during installation.

Darwin 3.1 is successfully installed on your Windows computer.

Next:

The first time you start Darwin, in the Preferences window, select theappropriate InDesign version.

Note: If you do not set the InDesign version you may run into problems when youtry to add pages in the Page Manager. You will receive a message from Darwin toopen InDesign even though it is open.

Important: In Windows 7, set the InDesign application to start as an administratorbefore launching Darwin. To set InDesign to run as an Administrator, right-clickthe InDesign program icon and select Properties.

In the Properties dialog box, Select the Compatibility tab and select Run thisprogram as an Administrator, under Privilege Level.

Switching between Darwin 2.0 andDarwin 3.1 on the same computer

Switch between Darwin 2.0 and Darwin 3.1 when installed on the samecomputer.

Although it is recommended that you use Darwin 2.0 and Darwin 3.1on a different computer, Darwin 3.1 can be installed and used oncomputer with an existing version of Darwin 2.0. When the Darwin 3.1installer detects an existing Darwin 2.0, it creates a back up of theInDesign plug-ins folder, retains all jobs and installs a utility that allowsyou to switch back to Darwin 2.0. When you switch back to Darwin2.0, all your jobs will be valid and remain intact.

Note: This procedure only applies if you install Darwin 3.1 after installing Darwin2.0. In the opposite case, Darwin 2.0 will overwrite the Darwin 3.1 installation,however the Darwin 3.1 jobs remain intact on your computer.

1. Make sure both Darwin 2.0 and Adobe InDesign are closed.

2. Double click the Darwin Version Switch icon.

3. Select Switch to Darwin 2.0 to switch to Darwin 2.0.

4. You can now start Darwin 2.0 application as usual.

5. Switching back to Darwin 3.1 is done in a similar way.

Notes:

● Make sure you close the switcher application after switching.● Uninstalling Darwin 3.1 with the version switch may leave the Darwin 2.0

CoPilot in a temporary state. To repair this, delete the Creo folder in thePlug Ins folder in InDesign, and then run the Darwin 2.0 installer inrepair mode.

● You can import exported .drwn jobs from Darwin 2.0 to Darwin 3.1. Thisallows you to quickly convert your jobs to the new format if you prefer towork only with version 3.1. See the Darwin online help for more information.

You can learn how to create a VDP job using Darwin 3.1, by followingthe steps in the Darwin online help. In order to follow this tutorial youwill need to extract the Jewelry job compressed file to a folder onyour computer.

This section lists features that were added or improved in the Darwin3.1 release.

● Supports Adobe InDesign CS5 and CS4 for both Mac and Windows.[DRWIN-10]

● Additional operating systems are supported, including Windows 7(both 32 bit and 64 bit) and Windows XP 64bit. [DRWN-9]

This section lists problems or issues that are resolved in Darwin 3.1.

● The Module Width input column did not accept inches. [DRWN-6]● The Barcode input columns did not accept decimal numbers. The

number is rounded off at the decimal point. [DRWN-7]● The Darwin Pilot does not open with the Adobe InDesign CS4

Known problems and limitations

● There is no longer integration with Adobe InDesign CS3 software.

Workaround: Darwin 3.1 can handle jobs from CS3 to CS4 or CS5.Import or open a Darwin job created on CS3 using Adobe InDesignCS4 or CS5.

● Transparencies are not supported with any output format—forexample, VPS, OptPS,Xerox VIPP, except for PDF. [DRWN-205]

Workaround: Replace all PNG or GIF files, that contain thetransparency attribute.

● Darwin 3.1 does not support Adobe InDesign CS3 software.

Workaround: You can open or import Darwin 3.1 that were createdin CS3 in CS4/CS5.

● Darwin for Mac OS is only supported in English. [DRWN-277]● Darwin for Mac OS does not accept .XLSX data files. [DRWN-325]
