Amphion Controllers - Tool Control Platform Varco's commitment to providing far greater levels of automation at a fraction of the complexity of traditional control systems has resulted in the development of the Amphion platform. Unlike conventional PLC based systems, which typically require a separate tool control cabinet for each tool, the Amphion platform accommodates up to nine separate Amphion Controllers in one Multi-Tool Control Cabinet (MTC).

While the Amphion Controller is similar to a programmable logic controller (PLC) in robustness, size, and application, it also offers several improvements over the traditional PLC:

■ Over 50 times the processing power allows for true robotics and a much higher level of automation for tools like Pipe Racking Systems and ZMS collision avoidance.

■ Industry standard flash storage media (Compact Flash) has 1,000 times greater capacity for system, application and data logging storage.

■ Built-in web server allows any networked computer having a web browser to access sophisticated screens that run Setup Wizards, Diagnostics and display Tool Manuals/Drawings and Operator's Screens.

The OLD Way - ConventionalPLC technology requires indi-vidual tool control cabinets foreach tool.

The NEW way - Simple, compact, lightweight Multi-Tool Control Cabinet offers tremendous cost and space saving advantages.

Amphion CS Integrated Rig Systems

Varco's unique Amphion Platform provides a simple architecture to connect multiple tools together and provide fully integrated Human Machine Interface (HMI) stations for monitoring and control of the drilling process. This is Varco’s new Amphion CS integrated control solution.

Traditional approaches to integrated systems design utilize PC-based servers and PC-based Thick-Client workstations in addition to the tool control systems. This can add great expense and complexity (maintenance headaches) to the overall drilling system. The unique Amphion MTC (multi-tool control cabinet) concept concentrates all of the individual control systems for the rig into as few as one control cabinet. Integral to this cabinet are the base components needed to extend this basic system and add Thin-Client HMI touchscreens (PC-less) for full rig Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) capability.

Amphion CS Systems are easily configured Tools Simply select the Varco rig floor tools needed for your application from this catalog. Since most Varco tools are now powered by integral Amphion technology, no complicated or expensive I/O interfaces or “middle-ware” are required. To incorporate non-Varco tools, a custom Amphion Gateway solution is offered. Thin Client HMI Workstations Workstations are ergonomically designed for workspace fit and function. Chair model workstations also include all discreet switches and controls required for specific tool operations. HMI workstations bring full SCADA capability to your rig. ControllersNow add up the number of tools, gateways and chair workstations to determine the number of Amphion Controllers that will be housed in the Multi-Tool Control Cabinet. MTCThe number and type of Multi-Tool Control Cabinets is determined by your controller quantity requirements. Small 5 slot and full sized 9 controller slot models are available. You now have a complete control system to operate your tools. To accommodate simple, scalable expansion, all workstations are interconnected with each other and the MTC via a fiber Ethernet ring. Benefit Summary

Automated Drawworks Systems

The ADS family of hoisting systems represents the next step in Varco's strategy to continuously advance the efficiency, productivity and safety of the drilling process. Varco applied the same advanced technology they used to design their AC top drives and automated pipe handling system to the hoisting process. The result is a feature-rich hoisting system that dramatically reduces time-to-depth and provides drillers with enhanced hoisting control capabilities.

The Varco ADS:■ AC-powered motors that provide

significantly more performance and have made possible a machine that requires approximately half the space and weight with lower maintenance than traditional drawworks.

■ A sophisticated braking system that offers precise proportional control, to improve drilling and tripping efficiency while increasing safety.

■ Automation of repetitive hoisting and drilling operations through user-friendly, touchscreen Electronic Driller interface or V-ICIS eD.

■ Unique AC-power control characteristics, such as regenerative braking and load holding without using the friction brakes.

ADS System OverviewSystem Features

■ Choice of one, two, three or four AC motors with regenerative braking (see specifications chart).

■ High capacity water-and aircooled disc braking system offers precision control of the dynamic and static braking capabilities.

■ Robust single-speed gear drive reduces space and maintenance requirements.

■ Powered by drilling-industry proven variable frequency drives.

■ Single unitized frame with simplified drum with a significantly reduce moment of inertia.

■ Choice of Manual, Electronic Driller, V-ICIS eD™ or V-ICIS control systems

Performance Benefits■ Dramatically improves trip cycle time with 16%

faster hoisting times and 30% faster lowering times compared to traditional DC-powered drawworks. This is achieved through much lower rotating inertia and the higher performance of AC motors. Also has a faster maximum speed for a given hook load because the ADS maximizes available AC horsepower.

■ Increased safety due to consistent automated machine control during night operations, during periods of poor visibility or on compact rig floors.

■ Reduces maintenance because of AC technology benefits, single-speed transmission and externalbrake systems.

Electronic Driller

Electronic Driller

Maximizing the drilling performance of today's complex drilling programs requires greater control of the drawworks. Varco's Electronic

Driller provides that control by helping drillers carefully monitor multiple parameters and make instant control adjustments.Field data on the Electronic Driller indicates a significant reduction in average rotating hours when compared to offset wells drilled with pneumatic auto drillers or by hand.Electronic Driller is the only auto drilling system that maintains a constant drilling state through continuous pay out of the drill line. This constancy ensures optimum bit contact with the formation, thereby reducing bit bounce and increasing productivity. Equally impressive is the greater repeatability of drilling performance in wells drilled with the Electronic Driller.Varco's drilling system also provides safer rig operations during tripping. Connection times improve because the Electronic Driller can reposition the elevator for the floormen and derrickman, which reduces driller stress by helping him with critical control functions.

Disc BrakesTo achieve the full benefits of the Electronic Drillers' control capabilities, the Drawworks auxiliary brake is replaced by a plate disc brake assembly. Unlike electromagnetic or traditional band brakes, Electronic Driller is able to use the plate disc brake to maintain a constant drilling state under varying load conditions. For rigs with existing disc brakes, the Electronic Driller can easily be integrated for proper control. For rigs without disc brakes, the Varco system offers a disc brake module, suitable for rig upgrades or new drawworks installations. And since our disc brake remains virtually silent during operation (in contrast to band brakes), the rig crew enjoys a safer working environment. Actual brake specification and configuration will depend on a rig survey.Electronic Driller Features

■ Maintains steady drilling condition through improved control of the Drawworks' disc brake

■ Maintains a constant control parameter, i.e.WOB, delta-P (used with downhole motor) orsurface torque

■ Ability to monitor and switch between controlparameters (WOB, delta-P, torque and ROP)

■ Secondary parameters can be used torespond to abnormal drilling conditions

■ Varco's control logic allows for smooth, continuous pay out of drill line

■ Safer rig operations through block control and the elimination of band brake’s quealing

■ Crown and floor savers prevent traveling assembly collisions

■ Traveling block speed limits protect against swab and surge effects

■ Weight deviation (pipe drag) monitoring detects overpull and slack-off weight situations during POOH and RIH

■ Fully integrates with Rigsense and V-ICIS systems

PHM-3i

The Varco PHM is an integrated system that automatically trips stands of drill pipe and drill collars, breaks them out or makes them up (using Varco’s Iron Roughnecks™ automatic torque and spinning wrench) and racks them, ready for the next trip. The entire system is under the complete control of an operator, in an environmentally-controlled cabin, who monitors the operation through a closed circuit camera located directly above the fingerboard. The operator, driller and single floor hand are all the personnel required to run a drilling system inside the derrick. And because of the PHM’s modular design, it can be factory assembled and tested, reducing the time and cost of installation.

Automated Iron Roughnecks™

Automated Iron Roughnecks™

AR3200, AR4500 and AR5000Over twenty years ago, Varco engineers began addressing the safety and efficiency issues created by the movement of tubulars from the pipe deck to well center. The Varco Iron Roughneck was to become the first in a long series of proven pipe-handling products. Each has been designed to provide “hands-off” tubular handling at well center by automating the making and breaking of connections. The Varco Automated Iron Roughneck AR3200 includes the latest advancements in automated pipe handling. At the touch of a button, the unit automatically moves along its tracks to the tool joint, spins in and makes-up, or breaks-out and spins out the connection, and then moves back to its home position. The Varco AR4500 incorporates the technological innovations of its predecessors while adding additional features required on large offshore rigs. Incorporation of a variable elevation spinning wrench and an integrated Mud Bucket allows handling of many types of tubulars such as fluted drill collars, stabilizers, crossover subs, downhole motor sleeves, MWD tools and tri-cone and diamond-type drill bits. The AR5000, using the features of the AR4500, incorporates a modular design that allows the Spintorq module to be removed from the carriage and replaced with other modules such as one for a 10 3/4” or 20” casing module.

Spintorq ST80The ST80 Spintorq is the latest and most compact member of Varco’s family of Roughneck products, 44% lighter and smaller than the others Iron Roughnecks. The tool is pedestal mounted, for applications where fast rig-up and rig-down are required. The compact ST80 frame is mounted in a small hanger for application on rigs with limited floor space that are too small for floor track-mounted Roughnecks. This hydraulically powered tool is capable of handling all tool joint connections on land rigs, most platform and jack-up rigs.

Telescopic ArmVarco’s Telescopic Arm makes it easy to guide drill pipe, casing and collars on the drill floor. The Arm can extend up to 36 feet

and swivel 300º around its base. Quickly interchangeable gripping heads can handle 3” to 5 1/2” drill pipe, 6” to 9 5/8” collars, all sizes of casing and marine risers. And the Varco Telescopic Arm can lift up to 1,500 lb. at full extension, push a load of up to 6,000 lb. and swivel with a maximum torque of 20,000 lb. ft. All actions are remotely controlled safely from the rig floor. There is a model and size to fit most any rig.

Foxhole® Slip Assembly

Auxiliary Foxhole® SystemsVarco offers two Auxiliary Foxhole® Systems that provide the Pipehandling System with the ability to make-up or break-out stands off-line while drilling ahead.

Foxhole® Hoist Assembly (FHA) – The FHA is composed of a square Foxhole® tube (28 feet only) with a traveling bottom, or plug, attached to a hoist assembly. The Cylinder Hoist Assembly moves the plug inside the Foxhole® tube and is capable of hoisting 22,000 lb. through 28 feet of stroke. The lifting capacity of the Hoist Assembly comes from an 8-inch-bore cylinder mounted to a guide framework. At the base of the frame on the cylinder system is a crown-like arrangement with four sheaves that provide a 4:1 advantage for the hoist. The entire lifting cable is concealed under the drill floor.

Foxhole® Slip Assembly (FSA) – The FSA provides an alternative to the FHA with a simple set of remotely operated Foxhole® slips to aid stand building when used with a PRS-3i, PRS-4i, PRS-6is, or PRS-8i. The system mounts flush with the rig floor and can support a range from 2 7/8” up to 20” with a maximum load of 22,000 lbs.

Pick-up/Lay-down System

PLS-3/5

The Varco PLS-3 and PLS-5 Pick-up/Lay-down Systems provide the ability to remotely hoist tubulars from the V-door position to vertical, dramatically increasing drill floor safety and efficiency. The PLS-3 serves well center and a mousehole located between the center of the set back and well. The PLS-5 serves mouseholes in line with well center and the V-door. Together with a vertical pipe racking system, manual handling of tubulars on the drill floor is virtually eliminated. The PLS-3 system consists of a guide rail assembly, lift arm with slew capability, carriage, winch, interchangeable jaws for drill pipe/drill collar and casing and control console. The PLS-5 system consists of a guide-rail assembly, lift arm with telescoping positioning capability, carriage, winch, interchangeable jaws for drill pipe/drill collar or casing and a control console. Either system can hoist both Range II and Range III tubulars weighing up to 7,000 lb. with up to 20 in. OD. When combined with a vertical pipe racking machine and powered auxiliary mousehole system, they can be used to make up stands clear of well center operations without the use of the traveling assembly.

Controls for these systems are provided in a mountable console that can be located in the Assistant Driller’s cabin.

Varco Pipe Conveyor systems are a reliable and safe way to continuously feed tubulars, or smaller items, on and off the rig floor. The lightweight, modular technology of Varco Systems make them flexible enough for practically any application. Systems are available in three basic modular designs to satisfy a variety of requirements.

Fixed LengthFixed length conveyor systems borrow their technology from quarry mining conveyor belts and are designed to transfer tubulars

at various angles. The strength and durability of these systems have been proven in a variety of demanding drilling applications.

Variable LengthThese systems are designed to transfer tubulars at various lengths and angles. They consist of a series of hydraulically powered feed rollers, added to a basic Varco Conveyor, to adjust for the varying length. They are designed to be skidded to accommodate a range of well slot positions

Pipe Bridge ConveyorPipe Bridge Conveyors are designed as a bridge system for jack-up applications allowing the drilling module to be completely removed from a jack-up and placed on a platform. The system is powered by hydraulic feed rollers.

Pipe Deck Machine

Pipe Deck Machine

PDM “Pipemite”The Pipe Deck Machine (PDM) handles tubulars on the pipe deck without physical intervention by the rig crew. Moving horizontally along a deck-mounted track, the PDM covers the entire pipe deck area to transfer tubulars to and from the horizontal storage racks and conveyor. The system is designed for installation on existing rigs with minimal modifications to pipe deck and substructure.

The PDM can hoist drill collars up to 9 3/4” and casing up to 20” diameter with a hoisting range of approximately 11 feet. This allows singles to be handled over the samson posts and onto a conveyor. Tubulars are retained by a lifting head with adjustable plates to fit the diameter of the tubular. The design of these plates creates an underside support for the tubulars. The PDM boom tilts to limit bending of the tubulars and interference with the samson post or conveyors. An optional CCTV can also be housed in the boom to provide close-up visibility of the jaw, ensuring accurate positioning on the pipedeck. And the PDM’s modular design facilitates factory testing to decrease installation time and rig costs.Specifications

Marine Riser Handling System

Marine Riser Handling System

RHSVarco offers two Riser Handling Systems (RHS) for handling marine riser to and from the well center. Applications for RHS range from conventional marine riser systems on floating rigs to special riser systems used on tension leg platforms. The system also can be used as a fixed installation for handling casing and conductor pipe. When the RHS is integrated with other Varco mechanized equipment such as a top drive, block retract system and Pipe Racking System, they comprise a complete “hands off” riser handling system that improves safety of riser running operations, enhances performance and reduces operating costs. RHS-1 This system consists of two hydraulically powered trolleys that run on a cogged rail. The trolleys are linked hydraulically only when sharing a riser load; otherwise they are powered independently. A support saddle for the rear trolley pivots, allowing the trolley to guide and support the rear riser almost to well center as the front end is being hoisted by a TDS into the derrick. Each trolley is equipped with changeable buckets to adapt to various configurations of riser.

RHS-2 The RHS-2 consists of a compound “trolley on trolley” system that is chain-driven by hydraulic motors. The lower trolley runs from the catwalk to just short of well center and then pivots up so the front end cantilevers over well center via a stabilized hydraulic lift system. This allows the upper trolley to guide the riser to well center clearing large riser spiders. The upper trolley support bucket pivots while guiding the riser. The lower cart has a multi-axle front roller assembly with a long wheel base to allow travel over limited floor gaps created by gantry crane tracks/path requirements.

Because of the broad speed and torque range of AC motor technology, this impressive performance is obtained using a single-speed gear box.The TDS-10SA Top Drive system is driven by a Variable Frequency

Drive (VFD) control system for a greater range of torque and speed performance. System components include an integrated swivel, bi-directional link tilt system, remote and manual blowout preventer valves, back-up clamp for breaking out connections, guide tube for reacting drilling torque and an electric service loop. A compact integral power unit mounted on the top drive eliminates the need for hydraulic service loops. And the short overall height and rapid-installation guide beam design of the 10SA ensure easy installation in existing masts or derricks. The TDS-10SA is available for purchase, lease or rental.

RBS Raised Back-Up SystemWhen connections have to be made “off bottom” or when the drill string has to be elevated to allow for heave motion on floaters, the Varco RBS tong unit is the ideal solution. The RBS positions the drill pipe stand over the elevated box of the drill string, which is held in the hydraulic jaws of the system. The RBS is available in three configurations. The system is capable of making connections up to 18 feet above the drill floor.

1000 Ton – Powered Rotating Hook Adapter (PRHA)

A PRHA provides 1000-ton hoisting capacity by combining Varco’s BJ 51000 Hook with a 10-port powered rotating adapter assembly. The PRHA design allows for 360º Hook rotation under a single riser section loading as well as independent BX Elevators operation and TDS counterbalancing to provide a hydraulic cushion when making and breaking drill string connections. The PRHA uses instrumented load pins to provide real-time

drill string weight data to monitoring equipment. Varco also offers a smaller, non-powered 750-ton version.
