VANPORTERS ENLIST
During J u l y , f i v e Vanporters have e n l i s t e d I n the s e r v i c e — t h r e e i n the Army Air Force, one In the mechanized ca l v a r y , and one I n the A i r Borne, according to Sgt. Jack Langworthy, Van-port r e c r u i t e r .
The Army Air Force claims Selmer T. Braff, I 0 5 I I I s l a n d , Apt. 6l«9, Asa G. Allen, 37IO Victory, Apt. 2039, and Robert D. Hamme, 11001 Lake, Apt. 77^0.
E r v l n K. Westman, 2002 Cottonwood, Apt. 350, has e n l i s t e d I n the Air Borne d i v i s i o n i n the P a c i f i c theater, while Charles D. Brown, 2109 Broadacre, Apt. 5906, has chosen the mechanized c a l v a r y .

POLICY ON ICE-CAUSED DAMAGE A number of complaints have
come to the Vanport Administrat i o n B u i l ding regarding the "ice problem". I c e must be placed i n the ICE PANS end not on the shelves above i n the i c e box, according to word r e c e i v e d from Manager Harry D. Jaeger. I c e placed on the shelves l e a k s and damages the f l o o r . I f the i c e i s dripping on the f l o o r of an up s t a i r s apartment, i t causes damage i n the apartment below.
I n the future, r e p a i r s w i l l be made and the charge placed on the tenant's b i l l f o r any damage caused by ice being placed on the shelves instead of i n the ICE PAN, he stated.
GIRL SCOUTS VACATION AT CAMP WILDWQQP
Going to b e a u t i f u l Camp Wlldwood, the G i r l Scout Camp located on the banks of the Molalla r i v e r has been the h i g h l i g h t i n t h i s summers' vacation f o r a number of fortunate Vanport g i r l s . There, g i r l s of both G i r l Scout (10 to I S years) and Browni e age (S to 10 y e a r s ) , have experienced the t h r i l l of going swimming every day, evenings under the s t a r s , going on nature h i k e s , and le a r n i n g i n t e r e s t i n g c r a f t s .
Mrs. Decie H i l l and Mrs. Hazel Hudson, co-leaders of Brownie troop #SU at MacArthur school, report that four of t h e i r Brownies had t h i s wonderful experience t h i s summer. Franchot Hudson, Holly H i l l , Joyce Hickman and Grace Brown a l l know the Joy of a week at Camp Wlldwood. Brownies u s u a l l y go for one week sessions and G i r l Scouts for two weeks, but Holly H i l l , who proved such a good camper l a s t year, Just returned from her second week there t h i s summer. Mrs. Hudson's two other daughters also enjoyed sessions at Camp Wlldwood t h i s summer. S y l v i a Hudson, be t t e r known to her f r i e n d s as Judy, from Mrs. Viviano's G i r l Scout troop, was there for two weeks i n J u l y , and Martha Ann Hudson, from Mrs. Neufer's Brownie troop, went fo r a week at Brownie Camp. Beverly Snider, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth &iider, though not a member of a Vanport G i r l Scout troop t h i s past year, also went to Camp Wlldwood t h i s summer.
I t i s the opinion of Mrs. H i l l and Mrs. Hudson that more Scout leaders should become acquainted with the wonderful advantages Camp Wlldwood o f f e r s to g i r l s . I t r e a l l y must be seen to be appreciated, they say.
This year the G i r l Scout council extended a l l leaders an i n v i t a t i o n to v i s i t the camp and see i t i n operation. Leaders v i s i t i n g days were on Wednesday, J u l y 16, and Wednesday, August 13. Decie H i l l and Hazel Hudson took advantage of t h i s opportu n i t y and drove out there J u l y 16. That date was while t h e i r daughters were at camp and they reported that they wouldn't have missed the t r i p for anything. They only regretted that more Soout l e a d e r s from Vanport as well as Portland didn't oome out there at that time.

OPEN LETTER Portland Traction Company Pub l i c R e l a t i o n s Department Portland, Oregon
Gentlemen: You have for some time been a-
l i e n a t i n g a l o t of f r i e n d s i n Vanport and i n the l a s t month or so, t h i s animosity toward your Company has been i n c r e a s i n g very rapidly due to the very poor se r v i c e we are r e c e i v i n g .
During the war we could understand the use of emergency equipment, although even at that time I t was very d i f f i c u l t to understand why you should take advantage of us to the extent of charging f u l l ten cents f a r e without t r a n s f e r p r i v i l e g e s . T h i s made i t very d i f f i c u l t f o r a great many people l i v i n g i n Vanport and s t i l l does. With the end of the war and with most of the war time equipment very much shot from hard usage, we have been given the o l d Reo buses with no r e a r e x i t , broken seats, and you have not even taken the trouble to repaint and reupholster these buses. Most of the buses look aS though they had never been cleaned, e i t h e r outside or i n s i d e , since they have been put i n use. On top of a l l t h i s , our c h i l d r e n have been forced to pay a f u l l ten cents f a r e i n order to go to school, which i s a decided outrage.
I f you think t h i s i s a good method to use to put i n t o e f f e c t i n creased r a t e s which you are asking f o r , you may be i n t e r e s t e d to know that the Vanporters almost to a person would, i f given a chance, vote down any I n crease whatsoever to your Company, and i f f a c t , would ask that r a t e s be reduced. I f you would give us better equipment, b e t t e r s e r v i c e , cleaner buses, we would be more w i l l i n g to work with you and i f you could see your way c l e a r to give us t r a n s f e r p r i v i l e g e s , we would s t i l l be glad to pay you the ten cents f a r e .
Perhaps you do not care what type of s e r v i c e you give Vanport because you may s t i l l be under the impression that a l l Vanport people are t r a n s i e n t and of tenement house type i n the lower income and inteligenoe bracket. I t might s u r p r i s e you to know that a very large percent of Vanport people are i n n e i t h e r one of these brackets, that they have been i n Vanport from two to f i v e years and cannot leave because of excess r e n t s i n Portland. You w i l l f i n d doctors, lawyers and executives of a l l types l i v i n g i n Vanport and most of the und e s i r a b l e portion we had during the war has l e f t . I f you do not take these
