VANNI’s Pixel collection takes the infinitesimal squared mesh of digital graphics and makes it 3-D, playing on the transparency and light effects of a material that is all micro-cubes of varying sizes and colours, alternating full-empty spaces, and withal a rich classical refinement.

Ixel by VAnnI: classical refinement in an age of technology.

The smallest unit of information in a digital image is the pixel. Here it forms the ‘grain’ of a block-acetate designed exclusively for VANNI.

VANNI, Pixel v1922

This collection yields its qualities to the discerning eye, alert to the minute detail. The shapes are unisex, with single-colour tops or a plain ground. To enhance textural subtlety we have coffee-gold, anthracite grey or vibrant violet-yellow.

West Side Manhattan - something wanted, created and still being kept up by the resident community, the Friends of High Line. A riot of wild flowers in the heart of Manhattan and a magnificent example of industrial archaeology. The penultimate stretch is now also open, from 25th Avenue to about the Jacob Javits Center (where the eyewear fair is held: well what do you

nOVelTy In The VAnnI MAgAzIne: a column about the world cities that have hosted the top eyewear

exhibitions VANNI has taken part in. New York is currently holding its Vision Expo East, so we can kick off from there. Our guide to some of the lesser-known corners of the Big Apple is a genuine Italian lady who has lived in the States for close on a decade. Elisabetta G., an inquisitive follower of the latest trends, also took the photos you see alongside. Ready for an unusual tour? We’re off.

know?). We recommend entering at the Meatpacking District end (NYC’s latest trendy district in the old municipal abattoir http://www.meatpacking-district.com/), after snacking at the Chelsea Market gourmet boutique (http://chelseamarket.com/) between 14th and 15th Avenue, and dropping in at the packed Apple Store.

Can you spare some time for art? The MOMA’s opened an extraordinary new section of historic Videogames in the

“Applied design” area – and you can play as well. http://www.timeout.com/newyork/things-to-do/see-momas-new-playable-video-game-exhibit

If you feel like a diversion across the East River, walk over Brooklyn Bridge as far as DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Brid-ge Overpass) – a fully and newly restyled district with its amazing park, the Fulton Ferry Port on the riverside so that all Man-hattan lies before you. Nothing more ico-nic than this, take a look at the photos alongside.

When Museum Mile begins to pall (the mile down Fifth Avenue from Central Park to Upper East Side, which is packed with the most famous museums, crowned by the Metropolitan, of course), but not before you have seen the little-known Frick Collection (http://www.frick.org/) your tour could include:

1- The brand-new art museum for (and figuring) children at Soho: http://www.cmany.org/2- The NYC Public Library, where there’s

always something interesting on (for free, too):http://www.timeout.com/newyork/museums-institutions/the-new-york-public-library-stephen-a-schwarzman-building3- The international photography museum http://www.icp.org/museumand of course the design museum. You can’t leave NYC without living – and above all eating – like a Newyorker:

So don’t miss:

- the best bagel and lox (a bagel with sli-ces of salmon and onion, which started here and has spread all over America),

- Kat’s Deli on Lower East Side, an institution in Manhattan, the best pastrami sandwich in town http://katzsdelicatessen.com/

- a new trend which is catching on all over, but was born in NYC, the Food Trucks, scattered about the city and often run by famous chefs...

- if you feel like trying the famous gaudy-coloured cupcakes, or New York cheesecake, this is the bakery for you... http://www.amysbread.com/locations

- and for lovers of Italian Style (which you obviously are) drop in at Eataly: it’s a must, on Fifth Avenue, of course. www.eataly.com

ITh The SnOW STIll lIngeRIng On euROpe’S ShAdy MeAdOWS, the Milan

and Paris Fashion Weeks have come and gone. They regard the autumn/winter collections –not the present but next winter, remote though it seems. Luckily for those addicted to the warmer climes of spring

and summer, in a matter of months our wardrobes will be undergoing a facelift and ushering in some milder weather. It has become a ritual for VANNI to gather the hot fashion tips for the coming season. This year the cool look is all about bright, bright colour on clothes and accessories, and tailored perfection in men and women’s wear. But first a glance at the bibles of style.

fAnTASIA On A cubeJust try some of these! Squares, rhombuses, and stripes too: this year we’re going in for cubism. Geometry is running rife on suits and trousers, skirts as well. Somewhat sixties-style, this is 3-D fantasy gone wild, writ large on all fabric in glaring colour. Shoes and bags have gone back to openwork, which had gone out completely and looked quite plonkingly out of fashion on men especially. Many (of either sex) will like it, though the total look is more likely to parade on the catwalks than down the street. Nice, though, to mix in the odd piece here and there.

neW MInIMAlISMMinimalism is known to come and go, not just in fashion but in art and design. This summer women’s and men’s clothes will have sharp cuts and folds, criss-cross and overlapping, like origami. The clean, clean line. Just when the winter season has surfeited us with rococo. Never underestimate the subtle lure of a return to simplicity, with pastel shades and ever-popular white.

MAdAMe c’eST chIcI guess you’ve seen it in your neck of the woods: ladies these days love dressing smart. The young ones strut around in

so perfectly). Accessories are fabulously feminine, with a slight suggestion of Asia.

My STyleIn contrast with the above trends, there are actually human beings with their feet on the ground, who don’t gamble all their savings on fashion but stick to work and play, just so long as they feel a little bit cool. For all such men and women, My Style has sprung into being. Meaning: looks are all very well, but comfort’s the thing, plus feeling warm/cool as the weather dictates. Ours not to parade around. So on with the sporting look, the college perennial, high-comfort materials, jeans and a well-cut jacket, mish-mashes, or a well-judged fashion detail thrown in with all the rest. A word of warning: a style detail makes all the difference … who knows, even the right glasses? Feel the energy!

SO WhAT AbOuT eyeWeAR?…Metal is back, as we foresaw. Thus for the top fair of all, MIDO, VANNI flaunted its fancy-surface metals – the marble or hammered effect - in well-balanced shapes. Plain colours and then a “warm” comeback by gold, though pret-à-porter and twinning with dark red or ochre. Minicubes are all the rage in acetate, so we are spot on with the new Pixel collection picking up the

super-fashionable (if quirky) skirts and cult handbags on all occasions; the next generation up wear heels to pick up the kids from school and pull their ‘bon ton’ shorty coats around them at -12. Well, summer fashions bear this out too: being chic is in. Sculptural shoes are on offer, Grace Kelly outfits in soft floral patterns, palazzo pants in the posher materials (the sort that ‘fall’

digital graphics grid of mini-squares and doing it in 3-D. The varying size and colour of the microcubes highlights the material’s transparent sheen. VANNI’s concession to fashion this season is to match nail polish with frame colour. Style from head to foot.

AnnI MAgAzIne SpecIAl edITIOn (dOn’T SAy yOu MISSed IT?)It’s been a winter packed with

art-related incident for VANNI: first the show for the winner of Autofocus, which VANNI promotes under GAI patronage. Then everyone in the cells. VANNI did a spell in the former Turin prison with an exhibition covering four years’ commitment to the world of young art. The Others art fair found room in a minute individual cell for the works of our four prize-winners to date.

But that’s not all. What better opportunity to run a special issue of VANNI magazine? In the cell and all! That’s where the new eyewear models were shot, worn by artists, art critics, collectors, gallery-owners – against a backdrop of their favourite artworks.

some of which made history internationally. Via the Baricole showroom, VANNI eyewear has crowned its long collaboration with the cinema world by sponsoring the town theme-map scheme, which charts all the film sets. Look carefully, you may be in for a surprise.
