h We know the healthiest food at the grocery store can be found along the perimeter. that’s why our choice pantry is “focusing on fresh” options. Here’s how: • The Scott’s MiracleGro Garden, located on the premises, is providing bountiful just-picked produce. • The Community Center Garden is cared for exclusively by volunteers, and it produces fresh produce for a garden to table experience. • the Old Worthington Farmer’s Market vendors are participating in the “buy an extra for the pantry” and donating surplus produce after market. • mid-ohio Food Bank has connected us with local Kroger stores for weekly pick-ups of frozen meat and other fresh items through the Direct Retail Partnership Program. Hill’s market and Lucky’s market are also sources for weekly donated produce, bread and meats. • “Food Rescue” is a concept where we restaurants donate food that is produced but not used. Little Cesar’s pizza, pepperidge Farm outlet, Bruegger’s Bagels and texas Road House provide hundreds of pounds of food every week. • evening Street elementary School pioneered the Zero Waste Cafeteria initiative, and Colonial Hills, Wilson Hill and Worthingway have followed suit by donating their excess milk, cheese and fruit during the school year. • neighborhood gardeners are planting a row for the hungry. • WeheldourfirstProduce Market in June. the mid-ohio Food Bank dropped ten pallets of produce that we distributed to hundreds of neighbors in need.

In 2008, a group of concerned community members decided Worthington needed a food pantry. The Great Recession brought the shocking reality of suburban poverty to our back door. In July of 2009, these ‘Food for Families’ volunteers began handing out food boxes to 30 families per month in the basement of a small building on the Methodist Children’s Home campus. Food for Families was an initiative of The Healthy Worthington Coalition, a group committed to helping the whole person: mind, body and spirit. Today we are providing food and personal care items to over 1,000 families at our location on the old Harding Hospital campus and connecting our neighbors with resources that will enable them to find a pathway out of poverty and to give back to the community. Our founders were committed to supporting their neighbors in need. Today, our programs and services remain as vital as ever.

Last year, our Resource Center helped record numbers of people and we distributed more than a quarter million pounds of food in our choice pantry. In this time of continued economic difficulty, we also provided summer lunches at Slate Hill Elementary and financial literacy and cooking classes at our location. As the scope of our work grows, we find it necessary to retool how we communicate with our community. We are excited to unveil our new identity, The Worthington Resource Pantry and our dynamic tagline: “Healthy Worthington. Hungry to Share.” The critical work we do wouldn’t be possible without your help. We were awarded the Platinum Level of recognition from the Mid-Ohio Food Bank’s Nourishing our Neighbors program, so you can be assured that we will continually assess the needs of our community and meet them effectively. We are incredibly grateful to all of our supporters, community partners, volunteers and board members for everything they do.

If you or someone you know is in need, please visit our website. We also encourage you to find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Our community is hungry to share: find out how you can be part of the caring, compassion and love.

Vanessa’s family moved to the U.S from Mexico when she was fourteen. Due to language and cultural barriers, Vanessa dropped out of high school one year

later. Now, she is working on getting her GED, while raising two kids. She says ‘Now, with the kids and stuff it’s tough to get the GED, it’s been 14 years, I don’t remember a lot of the stuff. It’s been hard with the kids, the house and then you try to go to the classes.’ Her youngest son has asthma and gets strong, frequent

attacks, making it hard for Vanessa to get a job. ‘He gets sick very easily. So when I started working a few months back, you know, I have to call off work so much. So he has to have treatments, he has asthma, it’s too bad, in the winter time, its gets to bad and I just keep calling off work. It’s hard for me to work, so for now I am taking time off. I’m hoping he’ll grow out of it.’ In this period of transition,

Vanessa has been using the food pantry to insure her family’s health and nutrition. ‘My kids, they like what we get here, and it helps a lot’.

Our lovely Sandy Hindall has been with Healthy Worthington since its inception. Six years ago, Sandy started with the original food pantry in the United Methodist Children’s Home, where the food pantry would hand out 25 food boxes per month. Since then, Sandy has been heavily involved with the current choice pantry. She is generally in charge of inventory, and is known as our ‘food guru’. She knows anything and everything about cooking, storing, and ordering foods for the pantry! We asked Sandy about what our greatest needs were at the pantry, and this is what she had to say “Anyone can help out by doing specific, one item drives that are most prevalent within the pantry. Number one is canned fruit, tell them I want canned fruit, I don’t care what kind, just a canned fruit drive! That is the need and is our biggest expense”. Volunteers like Sandy are what keep Healthy Worthington going, without their dedication and expertise, our pantry wouldn’t be as well stocked as it is.
