Message from the Chancellor

All relationships are from stories. Stories are at the crux of healing and at the heart of ceremony. We can’t change the past, but we can change the future by the stories we tell. At VIU we are creating a new narrative where we are better guests on the territories of the Coast Salish peoples and Mother Earth. Speaking, listening, learning, loving, healing - these are powerful forces that can change the world. Dreaming, making amends, grieving, imagining, taking off our masks – these are forces capable of making a revolutionary break, and a new beginning on different collective terms. Reconciliation is about each of us coming to terms with history and affirming our belonging to this reality as someone who acts in it.

As I journeyed with you on reconciliation road, I encountered events where change happens in a heartbeat. The Witness Blanket, made from materials from residential schools, is surprisingly beautiful, honouring the strength and courage of those who lived the terror of our country’s racist founding myths. The third totem pole was raised at VIU’s Nanaimo campus, engaging with all of the Indigenous language groups on Vancouver Island, their laws and legal orders. Kwakiutl ceremony called up the dark times when these traditions were outlawed. We were on sacred ground. The Kwakiutl spread eagle down, spreading peace.

VIU presented Buffy Sainte-Marie with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, recognizing and thanking her for singing us back together, singing in our new dreams. Dr. Tracey Lindberg was the keynote at VIU’s second annual Indigenous Speakers Series, challenging us to the ways we have benefited from colonization, how we hurt and heal each other. Her story of profound beauty called up ancient wisdom, that everything is sacred. Testify – a pairing of artists and legal thinkers worked in conversation about the recognition of Indigenous laws. Indigenous laws have so many different stories to tell. We are reminded of the ways we can live in harmony with one another and with all living things. We can embrace each other’s point of view from a higher perspective.

Graduates, I have heard Elders say that your education is as good as what you do with it. It takes courage to explore and jump into a different paradigm and belief system. Thank you for living your lives mindful of the impact of your actions today on all those that will come after; for contributing to health, gratitude and to keeping the world safe for diversity. Our grandchildren will walk in the footsteps you leave . . . it is a privilege walking with you.

Louise Mandell, Q.C. Chancellor

Message from the President

As we come together to celebrate our newest graduates, I would like to say ‘thank you’ to each and every one of you for choosing to pursue your educational aspirations at Vancouver Island University.

The VIU community – faculty, administrators, staff and your fellow students – has been enriched by your energy, input, perspectives and dedication. Since beginning your educational journey with VIU, you have inspired us to advance the fundamental values of this institution, including supporting student success; removing barriers that prevent people from accessing higher education; engaging in the process of reconciliation with Canada’s Indigenous peoples and supporting Aboriginal education; welcoming and learning with international students from more than 90 countries; and promoting community engagement – whether in our own regions or abroad.

We trust your lives, in turn, have been enriched by your VIU experience. As you move forward, know that your commitment to pursuing post-secondary education will open the doors to a myriad of opportunities. You now have the tools, experience and confidence to take advantage of the changing landscape in this province, across Canada and further afield. The BC 2025 Labour Market Outlook indicates that from 2015 - 2025 there will be approximately 934,000 job openings just in British Columbia. More than three-quarters of those jobs will require some post-secondary education and training. This is the labour environment you have prepared for.

Thank you for learning and growing with us. You have played an integral part in our community and we hope you continue to do so as an ambassador, demonstrating the many ways VIU is supporting and inspiring students from Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, throughout Canada, and around the world. Each of you are an essential part of VIU’s success. This is true not only for the time you spent as students, but will remain true throughout your lives as you continue to represent VIU as alumni.

When you walk across the stage and receive your parchment you are joining a community of more than 75,000 other VIU alumni living and working across the globe in health care, science, business, trades, government, education and many other vocations. As a VIU graduate a new world has opened up to you, and we encourage you to take what you have learned and explore. Just remember, no matter where you go you will always be a part of our VIU community; you are always welcome here.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ralph Nilson President and Vice-Chancellor

Honorary Credentials

2017 Honorary Doctor of Laws – Robert Bateman, O.C., O.B.C

One of Canada’s best-known artists, Robert Bateman has devoted his painting career to capturing the beauty of the natural world. Through his realistic painting style, depicting wildlife in their natural habitats, Bateman endeavours to show that “nature is an infinite source of reason, imagination and invention.” His artwork and fundraising efforts for environmental organizations have raised awareness about numerous conservation issues, and he is recognized by the US National Audubon Society as one of the 20th Century’s 100 Champions of Conservation.

Bateman, 86, started painting natural scenes when he was 12. A high school teacher for 20 years in Ontario, he decided to pursue art full-time in 1976 after his work began to attract a large following. His work is featured on Canadian stamps and coins, and appears in numerous public collections, the private collections of members of The Royal Family and several art museums, including the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His many one-

man shows include exhibitions at: the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, which drew record-breaking crowds; and the Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg.

An active member of many naturalist clubs and conservation organizations, Bateman has become a spokesman for many environmental, preservation and political issues. His conservation efforts – and artistic talent – have made him the subject of several films and television shows and earned him several awards and honours, including: Officer of the Order of Canada, the Order of British Columbia, the Rachel Carson Award, Human Rights Defender Award from Amnesty International, and 13 honorary doctorates from Canadian and American universities. There are six major books on Bateman’s life and works with millions of copies in print, and three schools – two in Ontario and one in Abbotsford – are named after him.

A Salt Spring Island resident, Bateman opened The Robert Bateman Centre, in Victoria’s Inner Harbour, in 2013 to “encourage experiential learning, observation and dialogue, and inspire people of all ages to find their place in Nature.”

Ceremonial Convocation Pieces

VIU Paddle

VIU Mace

VIU's graduation convocation ceremony begins with a procession of the graduating students, faculty, and distinguished guests into the theatre, led by a bagpiper.

When the platform party has assembled onstage, a smaller procession, known as the Chancellor's Procession enters the theatre, accompanied by the drumming of VIU's Elders-in-Residence. The Chancellor's Procession consists of the Chancellor, President, Board Chair, Vice-Presidents, Registrar, and macebearer.

MACE

During the Middle Ages, a metal-clad wooden mace was an effective weapon in battle. As newer and more powerful arms were developed, its military significance diminished, and it was transformed into a symbol of authority. Today, the ceremonial mace is used in many government assembly locations, such as the British and Canadian Houses of Parliament, and in university ceremonies such as this.

The mace used for VIU’s convocation was designed and created by retired art instructor John A. Charnetski in 1994. The metre-long mace is made of stainless steel and gold-plated cast bronze. It features four guardian eagles and enameled medallions bearing VIU’s coat of arms and arbutus emblems.

PADDLE

The paddle that is carried in and out of the theatre by the President was given to the University by Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo when he was installed as Chancellor in 2008. This paddle, made by Brian Bob, Qwuyutsapulth of the Coast Salish/ Ucluelet First Nation, is carved of yellow cedar and signifies teamwork, pulling together, like in a canoe. The salmon carved onto the blade represents journeys; salmon leave the place where they are hatched but return later in their lives, much in the same way that youth earn

an education and then return home to bring their skills and knowledge back to their communities. During his installation celebrations, Chief Atleo presented a paddle to each of the four regional campuses with the wish that it be used at special occasions, like a graduation ceremony. The paddle given to the Nanaimo campus is a steering paddle, which helps guide us in our important journeys. It has since become an important symbol and tradition in our Convocation ceremonies.

CONVOCATION SUITE

VIU's Ceremonial Convocation Suite was created by world-renowned artist Arthur Vickers, OBC, DFA, and given by Coast Capital Savings to the University in May 2015 to support our institutions' common goal of inspiring and celebrating the generations of VIU students, graduates and alumni. The suite also reflects a shared value of Coast Capital Savings and VIU - the belief in the power of education to change peoples' lives and build strong, vibrant communities. There are three distinct pieces in the Ceremonial Convocation Suite: the Chancellor's Chair, The Keeper of Wisdom and Knowledge; the President and Vice-Chancellor's Chair, The Keeper of Knowledge; and the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner Box (Huupukwanum) where the parchments are held before being bestowed upon the University's graduates.

The suite is an integral part of the University's convocation ceremony. The Chancellor and President & Vice-Chancellor reside in the two chairs during the ceremony, surrounded by the University's faculty and graduates. During the ceremony, each graduate, after receiving their parchment, is invited to touch the lid of the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner box, marking the end of their VIU education and the beginning of the next chapter of their lives. Through this tradition they leave their imprint on the wood, symbolizing the impact and impression they will leave on VIU and weaving their story together with all the graduates who came before them and all who will come after them.

When the ceremonial convocation pieces are not in use at VIU's convocation ceremonies they are on public display at the University's Nanaimo campus in the Welcome Centre (Building 300).
