Married in 1994 and enjoying the American dream, we thought our life was planned out
in Athens, Tennessee. I was serving as the youth pastor at First Baptist Athens and Heather
was serving as the church hostess and full-time Mom. We were excited to be raising our
two sons, Ethan and Joseph, in the comfort of a small hometown while ministering to and
discipling teenagers.
What began as a simple prayer to know God’s will began an unexpected spiritual journey.
This journey led us to leave the safety and security of home and ministry to move to Fort Worth,
Texas in 2008 to attend Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. We did not fully understand
the reasons for leaving Athens, but knew we must be obedient and follow God’s call.
He began to reveal his calling upon our family through an urban evangelism class that I
took in Vancouver, British Columbia in May 2010. I experienced a spiritual brokenness for
the people of this area that brought me to my knees. Through much prayer, a family trip to
Vancouver, and the prayer of many others we answered God’s calling to be church planters
on Vancouver Island. The desire God has given to us is to build a strong, kingdom-minded
church in order to reach the lost, disciple believers, and plant other churches across the
island, out of this core group of believers.
The Vancouver area is said to be a “pre-Christian” population, with less than 2% claiming
Christianity as their religious preference. Check out this video at http://vimeo.com/31117591,
which describes the spiritual condition of the people in the Vancouver area. This video
contains offensive language. Please pray for us as we follow God’s calling to take the
truth of Scripture into a dark place.
Our Church Planting Story

FORGIVENESSActs 26:18 to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.

COMPASSIONMatthew 25:35-36 For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.
PATIENCEII Timothy 4: 1-2 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to

RELATIONSHIPS
Building relationships with believers and non-believers is critical to the
development and launch of the church. Each person of the core team will have the
responsibility of initiating contact with people in order to build these relationships.
We will build relationships through sporting activities, service, hospitality, and
community events. The daily life of each core member will be intentionally driven to
meet new people and build relationships.
COMMUNITY
Our goal is to create a community of believers who represent the power of God’s
Spirit as expressed in the church of Acts. We desire to emphasize the unity
of believers, doing life together as we reach the lost in our communities. Our
community of faith will be strengthened through fellowship, discipleship, worship
and service.
HOSPITALITY
Living lives of love and care for others is living by the example of Jesus. A key
area of our ministry will be opening up our home and providing an enjoyable and
safe place of people to relax. This will be the opening to sharing our lives and the
redemptive story of God’s love for His people. Hospitality is not, however, limited
to ones home, and we will strive to create environments of true love outside the
walls of our homes by loving and caring for people wherever they may be.

COMMUNITY EVENTS/SERVICE PROJECTS
Building bridges with community leaders, organizations and citizens, in bringing
the peace of God into the darkness of our world, will be essential in the
establishment and growth of our church. Events throughout the city will give us
the opportunity to build bridges and make a difference in the lives of others. Our
presence at these events will show the value of our church to the community and
be key entry points into the lives of the people as we serve.
DISCIPLESHIP
Our desire is to capture the excitement of conversion of each new believer and
immediately begin one-on-one discipleship, leading them to share their faith with
their family and peers. Each member of the core team will be responsible and
accountable for discipling new believers. New believers will be discipled and
taught how to disciple other new believers that they lead to faith. This cycle of
discipleship will continue to multiply and deepen our community of believers.
CELL/HOME GROUPS
Bible Study and worship will begin in home groups, building our membership
through 6 to 8 cell groups, coming together for fellowship and corporate worship
on frequent and consistent dates. As groups form, grow and multiply, we will
take the next step and launch the church with regular corporate gatherings.

PRAYER AND ENCOURAGEMENT
Heather and I have been so blessed by the outpouring of love and
encouragement as we have followed God’s leading. As a family we have been
praying for three and a half years for God to reveal His plans for us. Church
planting in Canada is God’s answer for those prayers. We invite you to pray with us
and for us as we embark on this spiritual journey. Prayer is powerful and we know
that we cannot do this without strong foundational prayer support. We invite you to
our monthly newsletter, which will include specific prayer request and updates of
God’s work on Vancouver Island.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Your financial support can impact our church as we invest in the lives of the
people of Vancouver Island and the world. We are asking churches, individuals,
and organizations to prayerfully consider financially partnering with us. Together we
can reach the world with the Gospel.
MISSION TEAMS
The church planting endeavors on Vancouver Island is a grass roots
movement of reaching the island person by person and city by city. You can make
a difference in this area of the world by joining our missional efforts on the island.
As we begin this church planting adventure we will need mission teams to work
along side us as we canvass the areas of Victoria, work on community service
projects, and reach all ages and all ethnicities of people.
Partnering
Vancouver Island is a beautiful example of God’s creation, yet the spiritual darkness of
its people reminds us of the fall of mankind. As a family we hear God’s calling to this
area to spread the Gospel to those who have never heard of God’s great love. God
has placed this area on our hearts and He has increased our vision of the world and
what it means to be missional for the rest of our lives. As a family we are convicted by
His Spirit to follow His calling to the Vancouver Island.
