A Message from the MayorOn behalf of the citizens of Vancouver, and my colleagues on City Council, I want to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 2015 Vancouver International Children’s Festival.

Vancouver is a vibrant, multicultural City that embraces the performing arts as an important part of life in our City. The Vancouver International

Children’s Festival has been delighting young audiences since 1978. The festival offers something for everyone from music, theatre, dance, storytelling, puppetry, circus arts and much, much more. This year performers include two featured local companies, a musical circus from Quebec, and performers from as far as Australia, Scotland and the Netherlands. Families come to the festival from near and far thanks to the efforts of artists, performers, organizers, and volunteers that have made children the centre of this extraordinary festival - a crown jewel in the city’s cultural life.

Best wishes for a fun and successful week!Yours truly,

Gregor RobertsonMAYOR

Me on the MapNeworld Theatre (Ontario / British Columbia)

Multimedia / Theatre • Carousel Studio • 50 min. • ages 5 and up Commissioned by the Vancouver International Children’s Festival

Don’t miss the city’s first kid-co-created multi-media installation performance! This participatory theatre show for kids is all about civic engagement and collective, ethical decision-making. Audience members get in on the act by supplying ideas for a new Vancouver public space - will it contain waterparks? urban forests? pony stables? housing for all? But when the kind-hearted but out-of-touch city planner unveils the new design, it looks more like a parking lot! What to do? The audience must then work together to redesign the space. The kids decide and deliberate: If we can’t have it all, how do we be fair and still have fun?

Big BadBoca del Lupo (British Columbia)

Theatre / Interactive • Revue Stage • 60 min. • ages 5 and up Commissioned by the Vancouver International Children’s Festival

Students, teachers, and parents alike will thoroughly enjoy this multi-sensory, multi-media production devised by Boca Del Lupo’s Sherry J Yoon + Jay Dodge. On this shared journey, the audience experiences the classic tale from each character’s unique perspective, leaving with a sense of empowerment in knowing that often the things we are afraid of aren’t as big and bad as we make them out to be.

Weaving real-life stories, rhyme, words, imagery and her evocative Inuit throat singing, she’ll recount an Inuit legend, The Owl and the Raven, and two of her own stories: The Little Boy and The Giant and There’s a Whale in That Puddle. Both of these stories are about kids in the north who find extraordinary treasures in ordinary places.
