Gonzalo Mayo's VAMPIREL-LA #45 debut left me grop-ing for words. "Blood Wa-

ger" evinced the best artworktrie series has ever seen.

Mayo's VAMPI conveyed al-

ternately incredible sensual-ity and unearthly menace. With one stroke, Mayo has es-tablished his as the defini-

tive VAMPIRELLA. I'll neverbe able to blindly accept JoseGonzalez' less masterful ver-sion again! The scripting continues to

show new vitality. The meta-morphasis of Adam Van Hel-sing into a strong and dyna-mic character was an inspira-tion. The tension betweenVAMPI and Adam is addingnew life to the series. AndLen Wein engineered the re-

turn of the old foe Chaos veryeffectively.

Although, the clear stand-out of the issue was Mayo'sexplosive VAMPIRELLA, sev-eral other stories are worthmentioning.Offhand, I'd have never

thought that Luis Garcia'sstyle could utilize color ef-

fectively. Yet the artwork in

"Janis" was often stunningin its evocative beauty. Thestory by Budd Lewis and Vic-

tor Mora, actually more of avignette, resolved itself quitewell at the end of page 41.The last page was anticli-

mactic. ("...And that's thepremise of the novel I'm writ-

ing based on the actual peas-ant superstition.") Unneces-sary! Annoying! Cliche! It

hindered an otherwise power-ful tale.

"A Hero Born of Wishes,"credited to Gerry Boudreau.showed a strong Budd Lewisinfluence. It was a powerful, perceptive tale worthy of

parable status. Esteban Mar-oto's art was not as good asusual, but it complementedand enhanced the script well,

nonetheless.Again, the issue's standout

was VAMPIRELLA. FurtherVAMPI tales by the masterfulMayo are definitely a neces-sity-

Who can draw VAMPIREL-LA better than Jose Ortiz?Who can render her betterthan even Jose Gonzalez?Gonzalo Mayo, that's who!His VAMPIRELLA #45 mas-terpiece, illustrating LenWein's "Blood Wager," wasample proof of that!

Mayo managed to fill all

twenty-one pages with beau-tifully detailed artwork un-surpassed even by RamonTorrents or Esteban Maroto.

His VAMPIRELLA is beauti-ful. His Pendragon is realis-

tically bemused^ It showedthat a lot of work went intothis tale!

Forget Jose Ortiz! ForgetJose Gonzalez! Make way for

Gonzalo Mayo!

STEVE LANDISDenver, Colo.

I want more VAMPIRELLA!VAMPIRELLA #45's twenty-one pager by Len Wein andGonzalo Mayo was great, butit just wasn t enough! How about more stories

with VAMPi in each issue.

Two or three features withthe Drakulonlan beauty permonth isn't asking for much.VAMPi could team up withPantha. She could fight side-

by-side with Fleur or Dracula. She could even retell the his-

tory of her home planet, Dra-kulon. A tale of what Draku-lon was like before its riversof blood evaporated, wouldbe most intriguing.

DARRYL RAASCHSt. Paul, Minn.

'Tales of Lost Draku-lon" just might be the begin-ning of the history you'vebeen asking for, Darryl. It

begins next issue!

ry "There Are No Children In

Hungry Hollow, Tennessee"that I was seething mad whenI finished reading it. I stomp-ed around the room, grum-bling, mumbling, "Someoneshould kill those hillbilly can-nibals!"

In short, I momentarily for-

got it was just another comicbooh fantasy!Gerry Boudreau's fine tale

was so emotionally engross-ing, it literally pulled me into

the world of the printed page.He had me guessing . . . spell-

bound over the mystery of

Hungry Hollow's missing chil-

dren.Jose Ortiz' terrifying and

moody artwork added just

the right sombre touch to thesetting, also. In short, it wasan incredibly tense story!

Stephen Jorgensen madean excellent point in VAM-PIRELLA #45 concerning re-

ality. Many readers feel it

should be used more freely

in dealing with VAMPi's ex-ploits.

But is it really a good ideato have VAMPIRELLA, like

Pantha, beset by sordid as-

sassins, rapists, drug addictsand common criminals?

Luckily, the VAMPIRELLAseries has managed to stayseveral levels above this

cheap form of reality distor-

tion by balancing the believ-

able with the fantastic.

The re-introduction of

Chaos is an excellent exampleof this ploy ... the perfectleverage between reality andwild fantasy-horror.

VAMPIRELLA #45 had themost beautiful VAMPI ever.

Everything about her wasstunning, fantastic. GonzaloMayo is the artist for this

series. I used to feel thatJose Gonzalez was the onlymaster able to bring VAMPito life, but issue #45 changedmy opinion. Keep Mayo!Len Wein's "Blood Wager"

was phenomenal. Wein haslong been near the top of mylist of favorite writers. "BloodWager" helped keep himthere! The story was every-thing a VAMPIRELLA fancould ask for!

One question, though.Whenis the new VAMPIRELLA pa-perback due out?

GARY LUKOWSKIOmaha, Neb.

Recently, the Warren maga-zines have been full of thosetales of medieval splendor, when kings, nobles andknights were in their glory,

and plagues ran rampantthroughout the land.VAMPIRELLA #45 had not

one, but two of these sto-ries! Even a dramatic, violentclimax couldn't save "A HeroBorn of Wishes." (It may wellhave been the origin tale for

Gerry Boudreau's other medi-eval disaster, "The SongAlanbane" from CREEPY#71.) And "The Winter OfOur Discontent" also by Bou-dreau, was even worse.

It effectively utilized thehorrors of war, plague anddisillusionment. But the re-

sult was no horror story. It

didn't amuse, It didn't enter-tain. In fact, I would recom-mend it to anyone who hastrouble sleeping!

I have to admit that, in

spite of myself, I am impress-ed! Gonzalo Mayo's first VAM-PIRELLA strip is beautiful.

Of course, the factor thatmakes him the perfect artist

for this assignment is his tal-

ent tor drawing sultry-looking

women. And he didn't disap-point me! His voluptuousVAMPI was a fine contrastto Jose Gonzalez' more lis-

some version of our heroine.

Len Wein's script, how-ever, was not as successful,

it served mainly to demon-strate why Chaos has notbeen used lately. 1 mean, all

that trouble? Just to kill onegirl? Even a beautiful, multi-

talented vampiress could bedestroyed more simply thanthrough the convolutedscheme that Romano devised.

I have the feeling that Weindeveloped the plot from theconcept that, if a human candrown in water, then a Dra-kulonian can drown in blood,it was a poor gimmick at best, and one from which VAMPIextricated herself all tooeasily.

. It's on sale now, Gary.If you can't find it at yourlocal paperback' newsstand, you CAN find it on page 61 of

this issue!

I VAMPI>PIMIOMS? WRIT*

would have been for Romanoto incinerate her using his

touch of fire. Of course, this

would have ended the sagaforever!Which is why a continuing

menace like Chaos has noace in the modern VAM-RELLA series. Chaos can

never win. And he can neverlose. The whole concept of

the invincible villain who canbe temporarily defeated, butnever destroyed, is left overfrom four-color kiddie com-icsl

I believe that the moresophisticated audience youreach with VAMPIRELLA andthe other Warren titles pre-

fers stories capable of pro-ceeding toward a conclusion!
