The quality of our people and their performance differentiates us from our competitors and drives our ability to deliver the best possible service to our clients. It makes us a great company to work with and brings success for all of us. Our company is made up of individuals who care about each other as people, not just employees. We aim to ensure that each one of you is treated with respect by your colleagues and that you each have the opportunity to develop and grow your career.

In the competitive environment in which we operate, being able to offer good career progression is very important and this is as an area we constantly look to develop further. As a global business, employees have real opportunities to

develop along a variety of career paths, not only in related fields of expertise but also locally or internationally in one of our 20+ global locations. Our successful graduate recruitment programme underpins the future of our business, targeting the next generation of leaders for our organisation. Our goal is to create a positive working environment where every one of us can enjoy the time we spend working together, where colleagues trust and support each other and are encouraged to communicate their ideas and opinions.

Our relationships with our clients, suppliers and all stakeholders should be built on trust and respect developed over a sustained period of delivering our products and services while meeting, or even exceeding, their expectations.

By working in this way, the KCA Deutag Way, I truly believe that we are indeed valuing all people.

NEWSKCA Deutag Land division awarded BSP drilling contract

KCA Deutag has secured a contract with Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP), one of the largest energy companies in Asia for the construction and operation of a new build land rig in Brunei.

The design and fabrication of the rig will be undertaken by Bentec.

This contract represents an excellent business growth opportunity for KCA Deutag in a country with ambitious plans to further increase its onshore oil and gas production levels. The high specification of this new rig will allow KCA Deutag, over the contract duration, to demonstrate its further commitment to continuous performance improvement in both safety and drilling operations, which in turn will reduce the total drilling cost for BSP. Drilling is expected to commence in late 2015.

KCA Deutag wins first Canadian Contract for the Hebron Platform

KCA Deutag’s Platform Services division has been awarded its first contract in Canada, in a multi-million dollar contract with ExxonMobil Canada Properties.

The contract will see KCA Deutag carry out drilling operations and maintenance services for the Hebron Platform. The work will commence with an estimated three year pre-operations phase, followed by a nine year operations and maintenance program, with an option to extend.

KCA Deutag’s expansion into Eastern Canada is a key strategic success for the business and capitalises on the work carried out by RDS. RDS has been carrying out the front-end engineering and detailed design of the Hebron rig facilities since 2010.

T-221 two years LTI free

Congratulations to the crew on the T-221 for recently achieving the milestone of two years without a lost time incident (LTI).

Working for the Marathon drilling program in Kurdistan, the T-221 crew have been instrumental in developing the safety culture on the new build rig. At the beginning of the project the crew faced a number of obstacles; they were a new team, speaking different languages, working on a new rig in a demanding location.

This achievement of two years without an incident is an excellent result of the team’s continued hard work and focus on safety. A huge well done to everyone on the T-221.

RDS Wins Contract with Wood Group Mustang

RDS has been awarded a contract by Wood Group Mustang to carry out pre-FEED work on Statoil’s proposed Snorre C Tension Leg Platform (TLP) in the North Sea.

The pre-FEED work will be undertaken by the RDS team in London who will carry out the full design of the drilling facilities on the TLP.

With preparations underway, a team of 15-20 engineering and management personnel at RDS will work on the Snorre C drilling facility design for the next five months.

T-72 mobilisation from Libya to Pakistan

Congratulations to the T-72 crews who successfully completed a rig move from Libya to Pakistan. Thanks to the hard work of the teams in Libya, Dubai, Bad Bentheim and Pakistan, the project was executed on time, on budget and without incident.

Work for Mol Pakistan Oil & Gas co. BV is now underway in Pakistan, and will see the delivery of 3 firm wells, 2 optional wells and 1 work over well. Drilling of the 3 firm wells will take approximately 600 days.

RDS Secures $10m Contract for the Johan Sverdrup Field

RDS has been awarded a $10m contract to carry out front-end engineering design (FEED) work on Statoil’s Johan Sverdrup development in the Norwegian North Sea.

The FEED work will be undertaken by the RDS team in London through a subcontract with Aker Solutions for full front end engineering of the drilling facilities throughout the platform. Whilst RDS has worked with most of the major topsides contractors in London and Houston, this will be its first contract with Aker Solutions.

Simon Drew, President of RDS said: “We are extremely proud to play a key role in the development of one of the largest discoveries in the North Sea since the mid 1980’s.

“We look forward to delivering a safe, efficient and cost effective solution for Statoil’s Johan Sverdrup development, whilst building a long term relationship with both Statoil and Aker Solutions.”

40 Years of Service

INGO CEBULLAIngo joined the company as a trainee electrician. During his early career, Ingo attended technical school one day a week, while working for Deutag, to qualify as a certified electrician.

After a year of military service, Ingo began working on a land rig in the Netherlands. Two years later he went to Oman, and has since worked in locations including Pakistan, Gabon, Syria, Nigeria, Burma, Thailand, Libya, and most recently, Algeria.

HEINRICH KOTTEHeinrich Kotte joined the company as a trainee mechanic in Bad Bentheim. Just a few years later, Heinrich was promoted to maintenance supervisor working on drilling rigs throughout the world, in locations such as Pakistan, South Africa, Libya, Gabon and Germany.

In December 2011 he joined the team in Algeria as Maintenance Superintendent, where he celebrated his milestone of 40 years’ service with KCA Deutag.

Congratulations to Heinz Konjer, Heinrich Kotte and Ingo Cebulla, who have recently celebrated 40 years of service with KCA Deutag. Joining the company in 1974, each of the men has experienced their own unique journey.

ACHIEVEMENTS

HEINZ KONJERHeinz joined Deutag as an apprentice; training for three years to become a mechanic. When his training was complete, Heinz was placed on his first rig, the T-32, in the Netherlands and over the next 10 years he travelled the world, working on various land rigs in Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Turkey, Pakistan, Gabon, Brunei, Algeria and Oman.

After completing a Masters in Mechanics, Heinz moved into the role of Maintenance Supervisor and participated in the introduction of the company’s first Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Heinz played a key role in implementing the SAP Maintenance module and continues to work on improving and streamlining it through methods such as web based applications.

When asked his thoughts on the last 40 years, Heinz said: “It has been a varied and interesting ride so far! I’m proud to have become a Systems Manager despite the lack of formal university education, and I very much hope that others will have similar opportunities in KCA Deutag over the next 40 years.”

THANK YOUWith 40 years of experience, Ingo, Heinrich and Heinz have become invaluable members of the KCA Deutag team. On behalf of everyone who has benefited from their stellar work over the years, we’d like to say a big thank you and congratulations to our long-serving colleagues. FIRST COMBINED AUDIT FOR BENTEC AND KCA DEUTAGThe supply chain divisions of Bentec and KCA Deutag have recently teamed up to launch combined supplier audits, which aim to improve efficiencies by utilising suppliers that meet the needs of both KCA Deutag and Bentec. The combined audits will develop a standard procedure that captures the requirements of both divisions, ensuring that all mandatory commercial, quality and HSE needs are met.

This type of auditing demonstrates to our suppliers that we put great emphasis on high quality communication and team work helping us to achieve a stronger position in the global market.

HONOURING OUR ALUMNIIn February, Bentec welcomed 60 former colleagues to a presentation on new mechanical products in Bad Bentheim. During this presentation, the local team took the opportunity to honour their long-serving alumni, some of who worked for the company for 50 years.

BENTEC LENGTH OF SERVICE AWARDSOn 1st April 2014, six of our Bentec colleagues celebrated long service awards.

Peter Jahner, Bernd Meendermann, Hans-Joachim Ullrich and Uwe Först Machining each celebrated 40 years with Bentec, while Heinrich Wolters and Gerhard Stroers celebrated 45 years, with our rig and equipment manufacturer.

BENTEC

Dirk Schulze, Bentec CEO commented: “I’m extremely proud to have such a wealth of experience and expertise in our team. I would like to congratulate and thank all of our long-term employees who have been instrumental to Bentec’s success over the years.”

RISING TO THE CHALLENGEFrom their first day at Bentec and KCA Deutag, trainees are taught that safety should always be the top priority, and during a recent team-building event in Germany they were reminded just how important safety is when working in high risk environments.

A rock-climbing challenge saw teams work together to analyse hazards using TRIC (Toolbox Talk Risk Identification Card) to ensure they reached the top safely and efficiently.

The teams adopted various approaches to complete the challenge, using SET cards to address any potentially unsafe behaviour throughout the day. The day proved to be an invaluable opportunity for colleagues to share information and examples of good practice. Hall operators at the Zenit Boulder facility were so impressed with the creative thinking of our teams, that they have now introduced some of our practices as their own.

In May this year, KCA Deutag Graphic Designer, Ian Caie, hosted a creative conference in Aberdeen, inviting speakers from all over the world to share their design expertise. The 12 hour conference provided an opportunity for delegates to learn about side projects (uncommissioned work), which can often lead to job opportunities.

Talking about the event, Ian said, “My friend and I decided to host this event to raise awareness and passion for side projects. The speakers gave great examples of how to develop and hone your design skillset. The feedback from

challenges faced by homeless people every day. By sleeping on the street for one very damp evening, the duo raised more than £1,600 for the Aberdeen Cyrenians, a charity dedicated to meeting the needs of people affected by homelessness in and around the city.

Lynn Mutch, Company Secretary Assistant said: “We decided to take part in this event because we wanted to understand the hardships faced by the homeless community and to

delegates has been hugely positive and we’re extremely pleased that the event was so well recieved in the creative community. We can only hope that our next event is as successful as this years’.”

A huge well done to Ian for all his hard-work and planning.

help raise vital funds for a very worthy cause. We’re delighted that, with the incredibly generous support of our KCA Deutag colleagues and charity committee, as well as our friends and families, we managed to triple our fundraising target to help the great work carried out by the charity.”

The sponsorship money Lynn and Nicola raised will go directly to Aberdeen Cyrenians to help fund the charity’s food bank and drop in centre.

RECOGNISING KULTIAKHMETOV FAIL

Throughout 2014, Jamshed Khan, Performance Improvement Coordinator for Middle East & Africa, will be visiting our operations across the globe delivering Kelvin Topset Senior Investigator training.

In April, Jamshed trained 26 colleagues in Nigeria, including: Operations Managers, Rig Managers, HSE Coordinator, HSE Advisors, Maintenance Superintendents, Rig Toolpushers and Night Toolpushers. The training aims to ensure that senior rig crew are aware of the incident investigation process and know how to

analyse and identify the root cause of any incident.

Unlike typical training courses, Jamshed’s certification to deliver this course means that colleagues have consistency in the information they are provided with, and a focal

point in the company who can provide guidance and support with queries.

Over the coming months, Jamshed plans to continue his hard work visiting Algeria, Pakistan and Oman to deliver the Kelvin Topset Senior Investigator training.

RECOGNISING JAMSHED KHAN

Kultiakhmetov Fail joined KCA Deutag in 2005 as a derrick man and has worked on the T-390 since the first rig up and first meters drilled in Salym. Over the past 8 years, Kultiakhmetov has become a valued and well-respected member of crew, known for his eagle-eyed observations and vigilance. In December 2013, Kultiakhmetov won SET card of the month for intervening when he saw a third-party contractor using lifting equipment incorrectly. As a result of his quick action, he not only kept his colleague safe, he also prevented a potential incident on the rig.

BEN RINNES 6 YEARS LTI FREE

The Ben Rinnes has reached one of the most significant milestones in its history. On the 9th April 2014 the crew achieved six years without a Lost Time Incident during an exceptionally active period for the rig.

In December 2012 the Ben Rinnes began a contract with VAALCO using new local crews. It mobilised to the south of the region, drilling and working over wells on the Avouma and Ebouri jackets, as well as completing several open water exploration wells. In Q4 2013 the rig completed a two well program with Tullow offshore Northern Gabon before then returning to VAALCO.

To mark the occasion a celebratory meal was organised for the crew and a visit from the onshore rig management and current client has been arranged.

PILTUN 4 YEARS LTI FREE In May, the Piltun-B Platform (offshore Sakhalin Island) celebrated achieving 4 years without a lost time incident (LTI).

KCA Deutag is the primary contractor for the drilling operation and maintenance on the platform, which is owned by Sakhalin Energy Investment Company and operated by Shell. This achievement is the result of an outstanding commitment to safety by the crews on the rig, the consistent use of the tools and training provided by KCA Deutag, and through strong leadership from management teams to ensure that we operate safely and succeed globally.

Congratulations to the Piltun team for your hard work and constant focus on our zero harm goals.

BAKE OFF CHALLENGEThroughout the month of June, employees in Aberdeen took part in a weekly bake-off challenge, raising £471.96 for local charity, Mental Health Aberdeen.

Each week, teams produced delicious homemade treats including cookies, muffins and cakes. During a blind tasting, colleagues were asked to judge the baked goods on taste and overall presentation, before voting for their favourite. Thank you to all of the teams who took part in the bake-off challenge and congratulations to the winning team, You Ain’t Seen Muffin Yet – Rebecca Cox, Ieuan Spencer and Fiona Rouf.

A huge well done also goes to the members of the Aberdeen charity committee for their hard-work organising and hosting the bake off events.

STEPHEN SADDLES UP FOR CHARITYStephen Brechin, Principal CAD Engineer at RDS has raised over £1,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care after taking part in the UK’s premier cycling event, Etape Caledonia.

The event, which saw 5,250 cyclists take part, covered a gruelling 81 miles, taking in some of the most spectacular views across the Scottish Highlands.

After months of vigorous training, Stephen completed the Etape Caledonia race in just over four hours and finished in 808th place.

Stephen said: “I’m sure everyone reading this has been touched by cancer at some point in their life, whether personally or through someone close to them. Marie Curie provides vital care for terminally ill patients and their families. However, without public support and donations, they wouldn’t be able to continue their fantastic work.

“I am very grateful to everyone who donated. It means a great deal to know that the money raised will help a charity which is making a real difference to thousands of people across the country, when they need it the most.”

T-45 300 DAYS WITHOUT TRI

Congratulations to the T-45 crew in the Netherlands for their recent achievement of 300 days without a recordable incident. In recognition of their success and commitment to operating safely and efficiently, the team made a €3,000 donation to two local charities, Voedselbank Alkmaar (a charity providing food for the poor) and Dierentehuis Alkmaar (animal home).

retire, we will now be able to plan for the transfer of that experience in their project teams.

How do you ensure the workforce in RDS have the technical skills they need to progress their careers?

We’ve recently redeveloped our engineering graduate programme to ensure that in addition to clear career progression, graduates receive training, development and mentoring. When this year’s intake join in September, we will have 27 graduates working through the programme.

Our recently launched training and mentoring scheme is highly competitive with accreditation from the main Engineering Institutes (ICE, IET, IMechE and IChemE) and we encourage people to work towards chartered status. We all rely on the competencies of the people working with us to keep us safe and to ensure our operations are as efficient as possible. The new RDS training matrix helps us to analyse any gaps in training requirements and this is supported by our new competency system which measures the progress of people within different skill sets.

We have also recently introduced an exchange programme. So far our Baku, London and Aberdeen offices have teamed up to give both graduates and experienced personnel the opportunity to share knowledge and experience. This programme will be rolled out across RDS globally.

How are you using feedback to improve employee engagement?

Since the beginning of this process we’ve carried out annual employee feedback surveys. Participants said they would like to see an increase in workforce engagement and we responded to this with the introduction of an RDS newsletter, feedback surveys and frequent town halls. We have also continued to enhance our page on Kompass to improve communication across the business, as well as recently launching an “HR Lighthouse” page where our people can access day to day HR information.

Over the past two years, RDS has been transforming how it attracts, engages, retains and develops world class talent. Dawn Penny, Head of HR for RDS, explains some of the changes that have been introduced by the newly formed HR team, as well as the benefits these bring.

RDS is going from strength to strength, how is HR supporting this success?

Our goal is to ensure that our people produce the best engineered, safest and most efficient rigs. This means that we have to recruit, retain and develop exceptional people and support them to be the best they can be.

Historically RDS has been driven by the ‘project cycle’ nature of the industry and as a result we have a substantial contractor base, many of whom have been with us for a long time.

As we plan for our future leadership and the needs of the company, we need to develop staff positions as well, and we are putting in place various initiatives to encourage people to move to permanent positions with us as our success continues.

How does RDS plan to become the industry “employer of choice”?

We are working to a strategy that was put in place in 2012, and which we re-examine each year. This works, in parallel with the KCA Deutag group initiatives, to develop our HR function, systems and procedures to become an ‘employer of choice’.

While our journey is still ongoing, we’ve made significant progress in developing a scalable model which supports our growth in our key markets across the world, based on our successful review of our UK employment offering.

In future, we will be able to map out a career path for people joining the team. At the same time, where people who have been with the company for a number of years

Becoming the Employer of Choice

Page 9: Valuing All People - KCA DEUTAG Documents/Venture - August 2014_web.pdf · The design and fabrication of the ... The high specification of this new rig will allow ... pre-FEED work

Our core value, Valuing All People, is about attracting, engaging, retaining, and developing world class talent. This is our vision for all the people in our organisation no matter what role they are in or where they are located.

In practice this means that as an organisation we need to:

• Listen to each individual• Hear what they have to say• Respond to what is said to us

Attract: We are currently in the process of developing apprenticeship and graduate programmes across the group. This year we have already offered and accepted nine graduates to join our Land and Offshore divisions, dovetailing with the very successful RDS engineering graduate programme.

We plan to introduce an ex-forces programme for electricians and mechanics to come into the Land business. This is currently being piloted alongside the apprenticeship programme to see how they work in practice. We hope that the lessons learned from these pilot schemes will enable us to provide countries with a framework for these programmes which they can tailor to their local requirements.

Engage: A fundamental part of Valuing All People is how we as a group communicate and improve the flow of information to and from employees. This is a key area of focus for us. So far this year KCA Deutag has launched a new website, and a new and improved Linkedin page.

We have also reassessed our communications culture. We actively encourage people to talk to each other and for managers to regularly talk to their staff. We are looking at the development and support that we provide to managers to make this effective.

We have also reviewed our HR worldwide standards. We took the view that to move these forward we needed to be clear about the KCA Deutag Way of managing people across the group, as the previous standards didn’t reflect the different cultures we have throughout the organisation.

Our new standards will come into effect in 2015. There will be eight standards which incorporate comments and feedback we have had from all corners of the organisation. They reflect the KCA Deutag Way of Valuing All People.

Retain and Develop: Retaining and developing talent is a top priority for us. We have been working on a development framework for every job across the organisation. As part of this we have defined where each role sits in the organisation’s hierarchy, and aligned this with the technical skills and behaviours required to be successful in that role. This will be a fundamental part of future career development. From 2015, individuals will be able to see what they need to do to progress in their career and also to move into an alternative role.

Developing Our People, the KCA Deutag WayBy Lynne Clow, Senior Vice President, HR

Our people are our greatest asset. We have an extraordinary depth of talent in KCA Deutag which we aim to nurture and support in their career development.

As part of this exercise we spent a lot of time running workshops in various countries to identify the behaviours we expect from members of staff and to define which behaviours will allow an individual to progress.

Aligned to this is the development people will need to progress to that role. We already have technical development in place for rig crew but we will put in place similar arrangements for other functions. Our development plans address the whole person and not just their technical skills.

In parallel to this we are reviewing our management and leadership training. Our aim is to promote talent from within the organisation and tailor courses to support the group’s future generations of leaders.

KCA Deutag is committed to attracting, engaging, retaining, and developing world class talent. As an employee myself, I genuinely believe there has never been a more exciting time to be part of this group.

KCA Deutag is a company with a rich history, one which few of our peers can compete with. Over the years we’ve welcomed talented people, from all over the world, to join our operations and with more than 125 years of experience there are few families who can say they’ve collectively worked for the company for more than 70 years. But, when it comes to an employer of choice, the Bayer family have kept KCA Deutag in the family for three generations.

In 1947, Hans Bayer joined the Bad Bentheim team as an office clerk,

Keeping it in the family:Three generations of BAYER

BJOERN BAYER

OUR PEOPLE

where he remained a loyal employee for 40 years. During his time with the company, Hans saw his son, Adolf, and his grandson, Bjoern join his long-term employer, where they have both built lasting, successful careers for themselves.

Ten years after his father, Adolf Bayer joined Deutag as an apprentice mechanic, before moving into the role of mechanic in the machine department, and later becoming the workshop supervisor in Bentec’s machine workshop in Bad Bentheim.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Bjoern Bayer also joined the company as an apprentice, after gaining hands on experience working in the electric workshop for a year. He worked for three years as a trainee electronic technician before completing a year of alternative military service. When he returned, Bjoern was offered a rig electrician role with Deutag, which has seen him work all over the world, in locations including, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Algeria, Venezuela and, most recently Oman.

10

Page 11: Valuing All People - KCA DEUTAG Documents/Venture - August 2014_web.pdf · The design and fabrication of the ... The high specification of this new rig will allow ... pre-FEED work

Talking about how his career has developed over the last 28 years, Bjoern shared:

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO JOIN KCA DEUTAG?

In Bad Bentheim KCA Deutag was, and still is, one of the largest companies in the region, with an excellent reputation for training and developing its employees. Of course the salaries in the oil and gas industry were also a driving factor, but I knew at KCA Deutag I would get the opportunity to work on a variety of career defining projects. It was the best and most rewarding choice for long-term employment.

DID YOU EVER WORK ON THE SAME PROJECT AS YOUR FATHER OR GRANDFATHER?

Only for a short period when I was an apprentice. I was asked to test run a rotary table in the machine workshop where my father was the supervisor - he gave me a bit of a hard time, but that wasn’t uncommon at that time.

Lots of employees had family members for colleagues and you often got more pressure from your own family than anyone else. They wanted you to prove yourself and to protect the reputation of the company. I never thought that it was significant to be the third generation of my family to work for KCA Deutag. At one time, my sister and uncle also worked here at the same time as my father and I. KCA Deutag has been in business for more than 125 years so I’m sure we’re not the only ones.

WHAT’S BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR KCA DEUTAG CAREER SO FAR?

I will never forget when I was promoted from rig electrician to my first supervising assignment and my responsibility changed from one rig to a six rig operation. I felt like I was an apprentice again. Supervising more experienced colleagues was my biggest challenge, I had to work hard to earn their respect and demonstrate my technical know-how.

DID YOUR FATHER OR GRANDFATHER INFLUENCE YOUR CAREER CHOICE?

My father actually wanted me to fill his mechanical shoes, but I was always more suited to the electrical side of the business.

DID THEY GIVE YOU ANY GOOD ADVICE?

It was more like guidance throughout the short time I worked in Bad Bentheim and when technical problems occurred when I was overseas.

IS THERE ANY OTHER INFORMATION YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH READERS?

I hope that more young people will make the step to work overseas. It’s always great to see fresh young technical experts who are willing to work in a multicultural environment.

Here in Oman, I’ve had the opportunity to work in a great maintenance team, we’ve always worked closely and shared knowledge with each other. It’s given me a wide range of skills and experience and allowed me to work my way up from Rig Electrician to Maintenance Superintendent for the Middle East.

Perfect Day WorkshopsThe Baku office has run a series of ‘Perfect Day’ workshops in 2014, reminding the local team how to achieve a perfect day, every day.

Explaining the format of the workshops, Phil Woods, Country Manager said: “We open the day by reminding everyone what a perfect day is: no harm to people, no incidents, no damage to equipment and no non-productive time.

“This is followed by a series of presentations with speakers from HR, HSSE, Operations, Finance, RDS and Support Services, each giving an overview of their role, how they work the KCA Deutag Way and how colleagues can support this.”

Phil continued: “After a break for lunch, the day becomes interactive with teams working together to build a tower of strength. During this exercise, we ask everyone to think about the various factors we use in our day to day operations such as planning, design, leadership and safety, and how these could aid with building the tower.

“So far we’ve engaged with 450 local employees and the feedback we’ve received has been excellent. I’d like to thank the whole team who have worked so hard to organise the events. They’ve put in a huge amount of work and created a day that has been extremely valuable to everyone who has attended.”

Leading the way in safetyKCA Deutag has become one of the first companies in Brunei to receive a health and safety certification for the T-201 rig.

In a bid to establish excellent safety standards, the local authorities have introduced Control of Major Accident Hazards regulations, which require all oil and gas companies to be certified.

Talking about the new regulations, Andy Hendry, President of the Land division, said: “As a company we will always support regulations that are put in place to keep both our worksites and our people safe. KCA Deutag has been operating in Brunei for more than two decades, and our team has delivered some great results in this time. In 2013, the crew celebrated reaching 6 years LTI free which is a great example of how safe results and efficient operations go hand in hand.”

Tell us about your role at KCA Deutag

As you’d imagine my role as Group Communications Manager is pretty hectic. Since I joined the company late last year we have totally strengthened the communications team and have brought our external communications activities in house. We now issue all our own press releases to the media and regularly talk to journalists with a view to increasing the group’s external profile.

The team also looks after our internal communications and with over 9,000 people located all across the world, reaching everyone is no small task.

How do you usually start your day?

I usually start the day early and one of the first things I always do is check the news to see what events have unfolded overnight. I need to be up to speed on any events in the industry which might affect us or any news about KCA Deutag which needs responded to. I then check my email to see if there is anything urgent. This usually sets me up well for what lies ahead for the day.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

I think the people make this such a good company to work for. It was one of the reasons I joined KCA Deutag. I could see hugely talented ambitious people who wanted to make a difference in the company and I wanted to be one of those people. I could also see a company with huge prospects for growth and where communications could really add value and support its success.

How did you get to where you are now?

Like most people, it was through a lot of hard work. I didn’t come through the normal PR and communications route. Once I graduated from Edinburgh University, I qualified as an accountant and spent a number of years in London in various roles across the city working for example at the London Stock Exchange as a regulator for the stock market.

Five minutes with... DIANE STEWART Group Communications Manager

This was a really interesting role as I was providing guidance on deals before they were announced to the market. I also spent 6 months in Manchester managing a factory which was totally different again before I moved into communications, using all the experience that I had gained and ultimately moved back to Scotland. That was twelve years ago now and I haven’t looked back.

How do you like to relax outside work?

I love the simple things like catching up with family and friends over dinner, lying on a beach or driving my car on a sunny day listening to Louis Armstrong’s “What a wonderful world”. There’s nothing better.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I was really interested in languages at school and studied Latin, French and German. I was also really keen on travel so I applied to be an air hostess when I was about 16. Luckily, they said I was too young. I also tried to study accountancy at school. The teacher told me I would never be an accountant which is funnily enough what I trained in after I left university! It just shows that teachers don’t know everything.

What are you currently reading or watching on TV?

“Me before you” by JoJo Moyes.

Do you have any words of wisdom you’d like to share?

Life is too short. It’s gone in a flash. So make every day count.

MAKING A DIFFERENCEIn October 2013, Travel Coordinator, Marina Artyushina became a CEO HSE award winner in recognition of helping a colleague in need.

When one of her colleagues went missing, Marina joined the search and acted quickly when he was found unconscious. She ensured the man was placed in the recovery position and stayed with him until the emergency services arrived. Marina’s quick thinking and ability to remain calm helped to prevent a serious incident. This is an excellent example of the impact one person can make, and how important it is that we intervene when we see unsafe behaviours. A huge well done to Marina for this very well deserved award!

CEO SAFETY AWARD

Congratulations to Martin Ryan, who has received a client CEO Safety award.

Thanks to Martin’s experience, he was quick to notice a missing thermostat on a piece of equipment which could have resulted in a serious incident. Martin took the decision not to install the equipment and instead reported the equipment to management. This intervention shows Martin’s outstanding dedication to the safety of his colleagues and the workplace.

SAFETY SUCCESS

In recognition for their contribution to safety, two KCA Deutag employees have been awarded the SEIC safety “Man of the year 2013” award. Alexey Makarov (Molikpaq) and Denis Ponomarev (PA-B) received the award for: • Constantly showing their commitment to safety • Being a good example to others and proactively

coaching and helping others• Actively intervening on unsafe acts and unsafe

conditions – not only stopping them but also proposing solutions

• Taking an active role in the implementation of changes and improvements

Congratulations to Denis and Alexey for this excellent achievement – keep up the good work.

RECOGNISING IGOR SEH

Throughout recent years, Igor Seh, HSE Assistant, has successfully completed numerous sporting events for the disabled, competing in local and national competitions, winning several medals and trophies along the way. Last year, Igor participated in the Third Open Festival of Culture and

Sport “Pa-ra-Art” in Sochi, where he participated in a theatrical performance of “The Bremen Town Musicians and left with a diploma nomination for his role. He also competed and took the 2nd place medal in the 100 metre running event.

The list of Igor’s achievements is vast, and KCA Deutag is proud to recognise his personal achievements. The Sakhalin office recently contributed to the cost of new uniforms for Igor’s team at the Festival of Games for the Disabled in Sochi later this year.

We all wish Igor every success and eagerly await news of his future victories.

10 YEARS IN SAKHALIN

In 2013, Sakhalin celebrated a number of successes, the 125th anniversary of KCA Deutag, Molikpaq was named rig of the year and the local team celebrated 10 years of Sakhalin operations. Over the years, both the team and operations have gone from strength to strength, and we’re extremely proud that now, almost 11 years later, 28 members of the original Sakhalin team remain loyal employees of KCA Deutag.

Olympic dreams come true for GEORGIY KARPENKO

Georgiy Karpenko, Derrickman on Piltun-B, achieved a lifelong dream recently when he was selected as a gate judge for the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Having skied since he was six years old, a lifelong hobby turned into a degree for Georgiy when he achieved a Candidate Master of Sports. Working on a voluntary basis as a judge for “Mountain Air” Sports Centre, Georgiy took the opportunity and applied to become a member of the judicial panel at the Olympic Games. A short time later, Georgiy was overwhelmed to discover his application was successful.

Talking about his experience Georgiy said: “My day to day role as a judge at the Olympics was not dissimilar to my working day at KCA Deutag; a morning briefing, five-minute safety talks and a coordinated work plan. The general schedule seemed very familiar and everything was very well arranged.

“The atmosphere was incredible. It reminded me of being at children’s camp – it was an amazingly fun experience, but at the same time when its time to leave and you realise

that it’s over, it becomes very, very sad. I stayed in Sochi for almost all of Olympic Games and I met a number of people who I didn’t want to leave.

“The most memorable moment for me was when the Olympics drew to a close and the winners were on their podiums with flowers. Everyone was cheering, and someone from my team suggested that we should congratulate the winners from the mountain. The 300 people who had worked on the slope descended the mountain cheering and waving, it was amazing. I think the athletes’ recognised that we all helped them win by preparing the track every

day, and they turned to us and waved and cheered back. It was extremely moving and I’m so thankful for the opportunity to be involved.”

LUCY MCNAB WINS 2014 STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPOn May 14th, Lucy McNab was crowned the winner of KCA Deutag’s 2014 Student Scholarship.

Working in the Global Supply Management department, Lucy’s 12 month placement introduced her to the fast-paced nature of the oil and gas industry, with responsibilities including; base purchasing within SAP, assisting in the tendering process, issuing contract summaries and undertaking comparisons of vendors.

Each year, the corporate HR team invites a number of local students to complete their third year university placement with KCA Deutag, working across various departments including HR, GSM and Finance. As well as gaining valuable work experience during their year-long placement, the students are given an opportunity to compete for a scholarship towards their final year of study.

As part of the assessment, this year’s eight participants were asked to submit a report outlining their unique contributions to KCA Deutag and to give a ten minute presentation to a panel of judges. After the final presentation, Lynne Clow, SVP HR, announced Lucy as the 2014 scholarship winner.

Talking about her success, Lucy said: “My year’s placement has been a great experience and one that I couldn’t be more grateful for. I not only learnt about the supply chain industry, I also developed general skills in communication, time management and teamwork, which will be relevant in any job. I definitely now hope to continue my career within supply chain.”

KCA DEUTAG OPERATIONS GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMESince launching the Operations Graduate Development Programme in 2009, KCA Deutag has trained, mentored and supported 12 graduates; empowering them to reach their full potential and build the confidence they need to succeed as our future leaders. With 10 new graduates beginning the three year programme in September, 2014 will mark our highest intake to date. The programme allows graduates to work in various functions throughout our global operations, gaining valuable support from our colleagues and management. In return we look for graduates with a great deal of flexibility, coordination, perseverance and motivation.

Talking about the recruitment process, Lynsey Van der Laar, Talent & Acquisition Manager said: “Over the last five years the KCA Deutag GDP has become very competitive. It offers graduates the opportunity to take part in a structured learning and development programme, providing them with the skills required to succeed. Our online application process began in January and we received over 4,700 applications from candidates with a variety of different backgrounds, nationalities and experience levels.

“Once the applications had been reviewed, we asked almost 100 candidates to complete an online exam, testing their numerical and verbal skills. Based on these results, we invited 31 candidates to attend an assessment centre, where they participate in group activities as well as one-to-one interviews. Overall there were 10 successful candidates, who will join the company in September and start their training to become Assistant Rig Managers. I’m very proud of the Talent & Acquisition team for all their efforts in the recruitment process. They’ve worked so hard to organise this event and we’re delighted with the great feedback we received.”

CHARTERED QUALITY INSTITUTE – UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2014Each year the Chartered Quality Institute, in partnership with the Robert Gordon University and Wood Group PSN, recognises outstanding research carried out by students in the field of Quality Management. This year the award for Undergraduate Student of the Year went to KCA Deutag’s Callum Wilkinson, whose research titled “Continuous Improvement – Closing the Gap at KCA Deutag” was recognised as outstanding by the academic staff at RGU.

Callum joined the Performance Services team in June 2012 as a placement student. The following year he went on to win the KCA Deutag Student Scholarship 2012/13 for his outstanding contribution to the organisation, which led to a part-time staff position during his 4th year at university.

Neal Murray, Performance Services Team Lead said:

“Callum is a real asset to the organisation and we’re delighted that he recently accepted a full-time role in the promoted position of Performance Improvement Engineer. He has already produced some excellent work for the department and his research on Continuous Improvement and Lessons Learned will prove invaluable when we review and improve our organisational learning processes later this year.”

SUPPORTING THE TOTAL CADET PROGRAMME Total has been a client of KCA Deutag’s for many years, and during this time we’ve worked closely together to develop our employees. For a number of years, KCA Deutag’s crew on the UK’s Alwyn platform has mentored Total cadets in drilling operations, introducing them to the various stages of the drilling process over a one year period. During this time, KCA Deutag provides cadets with the training required before they begin an offshore rotation.

Once on the platform, the trainees shadow experienced members of the drilling crew from Roustabout to Derrickman. On completion of the 12 month offshore assignment, the Total cadets are also given the opportunity to complete a well control course at KCA Deutag’s training service, Dart®, highlighting the duties and responsibilities of a driller.

In the oil and gas industry training is paramount. It’s what keeps us safe and makes our operations efficient. We’d like to thank all KCA Deutag workers who have taken the time to support the Total cadets in their career development.

June 2014 saw the first graduates of a new apprenticeship programme that was launched by KCA Deutag in 2010. This state-approved apprenticeship scheme, Drilling Specialists (Bergbautechnolge der Tiefbohrtechnik) was designed to boost the development of young leaders, in recognition of the need to attract and retain talented people within the industry. The first graduates, Lars Mueller and Markus Kellputt, have undergone three years of training including; assignments on various rigs in various countries, practical training in the Bentec workshops and internships in service companies. They both passed the IWCF verification with excellent percentages, which led them to achieving great results in the multiple final examinations taken at the end of June.

Lars Mueller reflects on the programme, “It was a really good choice which allowed me to work with some great teams, and on some exciting, challenging jobs. It is a good base for future development.”

Guido Große-Brookhuis, Team Leader Training & Development underlined, “Development and retention of talented people is crucial to support sustainable success and growth for the company.” He concludes; “The foundation stone for a promising career within KCA Deutag has been laid for these talented graduates.”

Peter Marquardt, Country Manager Europe added, “Running apprenticeship programmes is a huge investment but having such employees on board I have no doubt it will pay off in the near future”

We wish Lars and Markus success in climbing up the career ladder and look forward to next year’s graduation of another nine trainees.

FIRST DRILLING SPECIALISTS FINISH THEIR APPRENTICESHIPS

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CREW OF T-45 FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING EFFORTSOn April 16th 2014, the T-45 rig completed 10 wells on the East and West North Clusters of the Gas Storage Project Bergermeer in the Netherlands.

The first wells in the gas field of Bergermeer were drilled in in 1969 by the Deutag rig T-14. In January 2013, KCA Deutag resumed operations on the gas storage facility, one of the largest in Europe. T-45 has skidded 31 times, with an average skidding time of below 10 hours per skid. In total, 29,573m have been drilled so far on the a.m. clusters.

This is a tremendous achievement on an important project for the Netherlands and for Europe. Rig Manager, Bernard Pouyet said: “This achievement has only been possible with the full commitment of everyone involved. I would like to congratulate and thank the whole crew for their efforts.”

Mr. Peter Marquardt, Country Manager for Europe, added: “A committed crew makes all the difference and I am very proud to have such a committed crew on T-45. Like all of our projects, there has been a constant focus on the environment throughout this operation and we’ve worked extremely hard to reduce both CO2 and noise emissions. As a result of this, the mining authorities gave excellent feedback on a recent visit, stating that our rig is the quietest rig operating in the Netherlands.”

T-45 will be moved to the West-South cluster starting mid-June, with operations on the remaining four wells set to continue until the end of 2014.

RDS SOCIAL CLUB RAISES VITAL FUNDS FOR CHARITYWith a dedicated committee delivering a regular events programme, the RDS London Sports and Social Club continues to cater for a variety of interests.

Events have included a pool tournament, lawn bowls, a pub quiz, ten-pin bowling, table tennis, a London walking tour, rock climbing, a theatre trip and participation in a number of fundraising activities for local organisations.

Talking about the social club, committee chairperson and Mechanical Package Engineer, John Lenehan shared, “We’re very proud of our links with Crisis, a charity dedicated to ending homelessness by delivering life-changing services and campaigning for change. We have supported them by donating our old computers, and we’ve organised raffles at staff parties, raising thousands of pounds for the charity. We also participated in the Crisis Relay event, which involved a

group of RDS runners teaming up with a squad from Statoil to successfully complete an eight mile challenge along the River Thames in June.

“Our ongoing fundraising and running efforts have allowed us to make significant donations to Crisis throughout the year and without the help of our committee members none of this would have been possible.”
