GGet Back to a Pain-Free Life

By Sheryl Sowell

Nearly everyone experiencesback or neck pain at some pointduring their life; statistics showthat this is true for 85 percent ofthe U.S. population. You mayhave heard about spinal decompression, or IDD®Therapy, as a treatment option, but are not sure exactly what itis. Spinal Decompression ofOklahoma (SDO), affiliatedwith Claremore HealthAssociates, Inc., is a board certified medical family practiceheaded by Dr. Dwight Korganand his colleagues Dr. GaryFortner and Dr. Steven Egleston. These physicians effectively treatback and neck pain with IDDTherapy using the Accu-Spinamachine.

IDD Therapy was developedby a team of neurologists, orthopedists and neurosurgeonsto rehabilitate and heal damagedstructures in the spine. “Weadminister treatment throughintervertebral disc decompres-sion, referred to as IDDTherapy,” says Dr. Korgan. “It iscompletely non-invasive and utilizes FDA-approved, highlyadvanced computer technologyto deliver therapeutic distraction

diverse. We see everyone fromoffice workers to constructionworkers to retirees,” says Dr. Korgan.

The advantages of IDDTherapy are numerous. The costis minimal in comparison to thecost of surgery. It is also safe andless painful than many otheroptions; in fact, most patientsfind the treatment process to becomfortable and relaxing.Perhaps the greatest benefit ofundergoing IDD Therapy is theability to continue working during the course of treatment.“Patients can continue dailyactivities during therapy butmust avoid heavy labor and lifting, as tissues are in a weakened state,” explains Dr. Korgan. In addition, mostinsurance plans will cover treatment, and payment plansare available at SDO for thosepatients without health insurance.

The course of therapyincludes approximately 20 treatment sessions and is completed in about 35 days. Thefirst ten visits occur in twoweeks. Each session is performedby a qualified medical technician

forces to targeted spinal segments.” The treatment provides static, intermittent andcycling forces on structures thatmay be in pain due to distractionand positioning. The purpose ofthe treatment is to relieve thepressure between the vertebrae, causing water, oxygen and nutrients to flow freely throughout the spine and re-hydrate the discs.

Non-surgical spinal decompression provides amethod for doctors to properlyapply a decompression force andcreate a vacuum within the discto allow blood and oxygen toflow to the damaged area, whichis critical to disc health andrepair. The process helps reducepressure on the affected disc, relaxes and retrains muscles, andsupplies muscles with blood andoxygen necessary for healing.

IDD Therapy is used totreat patients who suffer fromherniated discs, bulging discs, posterior facet syndrome, sciatica, degenerative disc diseaseand general low back and neckpain. Nearly anyone with back orneck pain can benefit from thetreatment. “Our patients are

and lasts for a total of about anhour and a half. Treatments arecustom-designed, with pain reliefoccurring at varying times foreach patient.

Treatment begins with internal heat applied to the treatment area by ultrasound, relaxing the deeper muscles andtissues. A hot pack is thenadministered on the surface tohelp relax the patient and theirmuscles. Next, the Accu-Spinamachine administers a 25-minutetreatment. It generally takes all20 treatment sessions for fullhydration of the damaged disc.

During each session, theAccu-Spina machine gentlymanipulates the offending spinalsegment, while helping stretchand re-tone underlying musculature. The result isimproved lumbar health andpain elimination in a significantportion of patients treated. “We

have about an 80 percent orhigher success rate,” says Dr.Korgan.

The diagnosis and treatmentprocess at Spinal Decompressionis medical physician directed, with a qualified doctor overseeing all procedures.“Quality patient care is paramount, and we assure thatall patient concerns areaddressed and thoroughlyexplained prior to beginningtreatment,” says Dr. Korgan.

The highly skilled doctors of Spinal Decompression of Oklahoma treat backand neck pain utilizing IDD® Therapy.

TTwo Days of Doggone Fun By Lorrie Ward

If you love animals and are passionate about the issues concerning them, you will wantto mark your calendar for one ofthe area’s premier events hostedto promote pet health and safety:the 3rd annual Claremore DogExpo, held August 25-26 at theClaremore Expo Center and benefitting the ClaremoreAnimal Shelter.

“We want this to be a loving, caring and positive experience,” says Debbie Kara, owner of Karalot Pet Care andactive volunteer at the shelter. Tofacilitate this goal, two days offun activities have been planned. The feature event will be DogDocks, a water competition inwhich dogs jump in water andcompete for height, distance, speed and retrieving, open toanyone over the age of seven andtheir dog (any type of dog is welcome). “Last year we hadcompetitors from six states compete,” says Jean Hurst, supervising animal control officer at Claremore AnimalShelter. “And we look forward toseeing them again this year.”

Other competition categories include Herding,Agility, Schutzen, Rallying and

that need homes.”The event is also designed to

be educational. The Tulsa Zoowill have a representative onhand to teach about native reptiles of Oklahoma, as well asto educate people on proper petownership. Jean reports thatthere will be veterinarians present at the event also. “Weencourage people to bring a listof questions about pet health, grooming and training.”

Jean and Rocky hope thisevent will educate people aboutpets and pet ownership, as wellas the goals of the shelter. “All ofour volunteers are from the community, and we havereceived a wealth of supportfrom Petco as a corporate sponsor for this event,” Jeansays. “We are a family of animallovers with the same goal inmind – to save abandoned animals.”

Dog Drill Team. Fun contestswill be held as well, includingBest Costume, Ugliest andCutest Dog, People/DogLookalike, and Best Trick. For asmall fee (donated to the shelter), attendees may also entertheir dogs in an agility course.Admission to the event is $6 foradults, $3 for youth ages 6 to 12,and free for children under 6.The youth entry fee is half pricewith a donation of dog or catfood or cat litter for the shelterpantry. Weekend passes will alsobe available.

Since one of the primaryaims of the Claremore AnimalShelter is to adopt out pets toloving homes, it is no surprisethat animals will be available foradoption at this event. “We willbe featuring dog adoptions fromlocal shelters and rescue groupslike Lab Rescue, Corgi Rescue,Boxer Rescue, Zois Rescue andothers,” says Rocky Ambrister, animal control officer atClaremore Animal Shelter.“This event got started not onlybecause we wanted somethingfor people in the community tocome and participate in withtheir dogs, but so we could showcase shelter and rescue dogs

The 3rd annual Claremore Dog Expo will be held August 25-26 at the Claremore Expo Center to benefit the local animal shelter.

HHelping Families Stretch BudgetsBy Paul Tackett

Just Between Friends continuesto help families stretch theirbudget by continuing to offerchildren's clothes and equipmentat unbelievable savings.

Just when the economyseems to be getting better, something else pops up, and itfinds a way to contribute to

Just Between Friends, thenation's leading children's andmaternity consignment salesevent, helps families find somestability and security by beingable to purchase an entire sea-son’s wardrobe, even school uni-forms, on a reasonable budget.

Marcy Leffingwell, one ofthe new owners of Just BetweenFriends Broken Arrow/Bixby,doesn't always know where tobegin when she starts talkingabout her JBF sales event."Families not only eat better, they live better because JBFhelps put some expendableincome back in the family budgetbecause of the great savings thatcan be found at a JBF salesevent," Leffingwell said.

Typically shoppers can experience 50 to 90 percent offclothes and equipment, compared to retailprices. "Moms, dads and grand-parents can get quality items fortheir children at amazingly lowprices and still be able to buy thegroceries for that month,"Leffingwell said.

Amber Post, franchisee ofSouthwest Tulsa and Owasso, was a JBF shopper before shestarted organizing her own JBFevents. "We were young collegestudents, broke and on a tight

inflation and the shrinkage ofeveryone's take home pay. Formany families, the toll on thefamily's budget continues andwith back to school around thecorner, many parents know buying clothes for their childrenand the necessary equipment canbe expensive.

budget," Post said. She had a six-month-old daughter the firsttime she shopped at a JBF andeven then, she was a slave tofashion. Before, Post had to relyon her mom and grandma to buythe really cute things. "I couldonly afford to buy her the basicsand shop the clearance racks, butonce I discovered JBF, it was likea dream come true," she said.Suddenly Post could buy every-thing she wanted for her and notjeopardize her family's budget.

After shopping once, shedecided to consign and receiveda check for $75 from items shesold, and she was hooked. It wasso easy to do, and a sales eventhas so much to offer in terms ofclothes, shoes, toys, books andmore for the upcoming season.

Daven Tackett, owner ofJust Between Friends Tulsa andco-founder of JBF, is mostpleased that the sale is a dignified way for a parent to buychildren's clothes at great savings. Moms and dads can feelgood about letting their childrenwear and play with the itemspurchased.

"My mother was divorcedand disabled, trying to raisethree girls on a fixed income. She did many creative things tomake ends meet, including

buying some of our clothes fromresale and going to garage sales,"Tackett said. "As kids, we didn'tknow there was any other way tobuy clothes. We were just alwaysexcited and happy about gettingsomething new to wear."

Families across the nationare realizing shoppingresale/consignment makes sense. For the upcoming season, JustBetween Friends has four areasales to choose from. SouthwestTulsa is scheduled for August 4-6at the Glenpool ConferenceCenter, followed by JBF Tulsa, the franchise system’s largestsales event, set for August 19-25at Expo Square. Owasso willoccur September 13-16 next toReasor's, and JBF BrokenArrow/Bixby is taking placeOctober 11-13 at the SpiritBankEvent Center. For more information, such as eventhours, go to JBFSale.com.

AA Claremore OriginalBy Lorrie Ward

For over four decades, Ne-MarShopping Center in Claremorehas been living up to its title as“A Claremore Original,” providing homes for long-timebusinesses as well as introducingnew faces to the scene on WestWill Rogers Boulevard. One ofthe newer faces in recent years isAll Star Trophy & ScreenPrinting, and according to ownerDeric Brock, moving to Ne-Marin October of 2008 turned out tobe a great decision.

All Star Trophy celebrated its30-year anniversary last fall and

"Personal name and businessname are synonymous when itcomes to small business," he says."We go by the Golden Rule hereand believe that success is alwaysfound in going the extra mile forour clients."

All Star Trophy has a newneighbor just a few doors down atPromote 2 Win Advertising, ashop owned by Jeff Losorniooffering promotional products forbusiness organizations andgroups, with an emphasis onscreen printing and embroideryproducts. The shop also producesbanners, pens and more, and hasopened up a shop mainly toshowcase what it can do for itsclients. Almost everything is cus-tom-made at Promote 2 WinAdvertising, but Jeff does plan tohave a retail section for the localschools – Claremore Zebras,Sequoyah Eagles, and VerdigrisCardinals.

“I’ve been in this businessfor 22 years, and I want to broad-en the customer base by loweringoverhead and going back to thebasics,” says Jeff, who stays active-ly involved with community proj-ects by offering discounts togroups or businesses helping toraise money for charity through a

has enjoyed even greater successsince its move from Chelsea toClaremore's Ne-Mar Center. "Webuilt a sound reputation in north-eastern Oklahoma while we werein Chelsea by word of mouth andhad a good 26 years there," saysDeric. "But being in this spotwith its high traffic and visibilityhas made a significant difference." The location has alsoenabled Brock to establish aworking partnership with RSU.

Though All Star Trophy haschanged locations in recent years,Deric's philosophy has not.

program called Chari-Tees. “Wework with suppliers to help getprices down so the organizationscan actually make money for theircauses,” Jeff says. “We are not allabout making money, but aboutgiving back to the community.”For more information onPromote 2 Win Advertising, check out their website atwww.p2wadvertising.com.

Around the corner, Ne-Marrecently welcomed yet anothernew member to its family—Infinity Fit Club. Currently,Infinity Fit Club is the only 24-hour co-ed gym in Claremore, offering access to top-of-the-lineequipment, personal trainers whocan do personalized health assessments (great if you are juststarting out), and popular classeslike boot camp and Zumba, taught by certified, experiencedinstructors. “Our personal trainerJennifer Freeman will set up aworkout program and help youdefine your goals to guide youalong,” says owner Kelli Overgard

Cabler. “We also offer one-on-onetraining sessions for a reasonablefee.”

Infinity Fit Club may be newto Ne-Mar, but Kelli OvergardCabler is no stranger to the“Claremore Original.” Her grand-father started The Men’s Shoppe, one of Ne-Mar’s first businesses, and both her parents ownedshops in Ne-Mar during the 70sand 80s. Thus, Kelli was wellacquainted with the reputationsof Ne-Mar owners Terrie andSteve Neely (who were also herneighbors as she grew up) and isexcited to continue in her ownfamily’s footsteps. “You alwayshear horror stories about peopleand their landlords, but you won’thear one of those from me,” Kellisays. “The Neelys are a dream torent from – I love it here!”

Ne-Mar Shopping Center has been a happy home to Claremore business ownersfor more than four decades.

TTake a Shine to Felts By Lorrie Ward

Claremore schools start a bit early this year on August 9. Withthe rapidly approaching datelooming over their heads, parents buying school and athletic shoes for their kidsmight be tempted to adhere tothe idiom, "any port in a storm,"rushing out to buy new shoes forapproaching school days and ballgames. But when it comes tobuying shoes, it pays to take a little bit of extra time and care toget just the right fit for thosedeveloping feet.

“If your feet are not happy, your body is not happy,” TabithaFelts of Felts Shoes in Claremoresays. That is why she has becomean expert on shoes and how theyaffect the feet, and wants tomake sure customers have notonly the best shoe, but the bestfit possible for their optimumhealth and wellbeing. “If peoplearen’t happy with their shoe, they usually don’t blame the vendor. They blame the personwho sold them the shoe,” sherelates. “I want people to be happy with their purchase.”

Research proves Tabitha'spoint. According to an articleabout walking shoes on theMayo Clinic website, it is not

only important to wear the righttype of shoe for different occa-sions, such as walking, runningor working, but it is important tofollow certain guidelines to getthe best fit. The experts urgereaders to consider the shape oftheir feet and arch type whenbuying a shoe and to make surethey consult a professional fitter, who will measure their feet eachtime they buy shoes, as foot sizechanges over the years not onlyin children, but in adults as well.

This is why it is importantto visit a store such as FeltsShoes, where a true professionallike Tabitha can help guide youthrough the steps in finding theperfect shoe for your foot. Sheknows that common foot problems – corns, bunions andhammertoe – can often be tracedright back to a poorly fitted shoe.Other more subtle issues canalso be caused by incorrect fit aswell, including knee, ankle, backand hip pain. She encouragescustomers to allow her or a staffmember to measure their foot toget a correct size, instead of justmaking assumptions, and to bewilling to invest a little bit extrain order to get a quality brandshoe. She reports that many

people will skimp on shoes forwork especially, since thoseshoes will get a lot of wear andtear. But it is the wear and tearon the whole body from thework day that makes Tabithaadvise the customer to rethinkthis decision. “When you are onyour feet all day,” she says, “whatbothers your feet will botheryour whole body.”

Felts Shoes has its usualwide selection of carefully chosen, name brand, qualityfootwear. Tabitha reports thatSperry and Vibram remain popular this year, as well asSanuk and DC, and she will bereceiving a big selection of thelatest UGGs in September. Shealso carries accessories: insolesand shoe strings, as well asOakley sunglasses. Shoes qualifyfor the tax free weekend comingup the first weekend in August,so remember to mark your calendar for a visit to Felts. AndTabitha also wants to remindeveryone that Felts Shoes has alayaway plan – “one of the greatthings about being a small business!” she says with a smile– and so, it is not too early tostart your Christmas shopping.

Felts Shoes in the Ne-Mar Center offers high-quality products and individualized service forthe entire family.

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

road,” he says. “You want coverage thatprotects your personal situation.”

Cottom uses this example to illustratehis point: A man has purchased the mostbasic coverage, 25-50-25, on his vehicle. This means that the coverage caps at$25,000 per person for bodily injury,$50,000 for the entire accident, and$25,000 for property damage. One day,he collides with a Mercedes Benz, drivenby a doctor who is transporting his wifeand two children. Not only are two peoplein the other vehicle killed, but the manhimself is badly injured and is in the hospital for six months. “Will that 25-50-25 insurance cover the devastatingcosts of this accident?” Cottom asks.“Who will pay the man’s salary while he isoff work?”

Protection against the worst thatcould happen is the reason for procuringinsurance in the first place, but ironicallypeople often don’t consider the very worstthat can happen when they actually makethe purchase. “We all think we are invincible,” Cottom states. “A lot of consumers are uninformed when it comesto insurance and will gravitate toward thelowest price.”

Basing a decision on the lowest price, however, will often leave huge holes in thesafety net that insurance was designed toprovide. That’s why Cottom encouragescurrent and potential clients to call or visitAmber Helmuth, personal lines risk manager at RCI Insurance, to review anddiscuss an individualized plan. PPut Your Best FaceForward This Fall

By Sheryl Sowell

The summer will soon be windingdown, and as hard to believe as itis, fall will arrive soon after. Thisyear has gone by so fast it’s hardto keep up. Did you start the yearplanning to do something foryourself? Now it’s already Augustand you haven’t done anything?

Dr. Mallory Spoor-Baker atAdvanced Cosmetic Medicine hasjust what you’re looking for. Sheoffers cosmetic procedures tomake you feel beautiful andrefreshed, just in time for theupcoming fall season.

According to Dr. Spoor-Baker, Botox is still, without adoubt, the fastest fix for agingexpression lines on your face.Deep lines between the eyesmake you look tired or angryeven when your face is still. It certainly gets worse with age.Within three days, Botox willmake that area look flatter andsmoother. People will think youlook relaxed, and you will evenfeel more relaxed. With repeatBotox treatments in the first year, those lines can be gone.

Dermal fillers such asRadiesse and Juvederm can makethe area around your mouth andyour entire face appear 10 years

creates youthful visual balancebetween the eyes and the mouth. This can last four to six months.

For those “parentheses” linesaround the mouth – nasolabialfolds – Dr. Spoor-Baker recom-mends Radiesse for her patients.Radiesse is a firm, well-tolerated,calcium-based filler that providesstructural support for the skin

younger. This is as close to imme-diate as you can get. Dr. Spoor-Baker principally uses Juvedermin the lips to restore fullness andsoften those unsightly, aging vertical lip lines. These form frompursing your lips with speech andactivity, and also from loss of lipvolume. Restoring lip volumetakes years off your face and

around the mouth. This area sagsover time. She explains to herpatients that fillers are for thetopography of the face. If youhave hills and deep valleys, thenfillers go under the valleys to soften the transitions of the hills. The overall effect is a plumper, firmer, more youthful appearance.Radiesse in the nasolabial foldscan last up to 12 months.

IPL/limelight laser treat-ments can improve a wide rangeof issues on aging faces. Most people over 35 have sun damage –unfortunate, but true. Sun damage can mean brown spots, red pigment or veins, dilatedpores, and uneven texture.IPL/limelight treatments reducered and brown pigments, andhelp to even out texture and poresas well. “It usually takes morethan one treatment, but if youhave substantial pigment issues, even one treatment can be dramatic. I usually recommend aminimum of three treatments,”says Dr. Spoor-Baker.

The Pearl laser is a seriousapproach to aging skin. This is atype of “fractional” resurfacinglaser which removes a layer of surface skin to promote smooth-ness and generate a high degree ofcollagen remodeling. Pearl treatments can truly turn back theage clock. Pearl resurfacing givesyou the dramatic change of high-grade chemical peels with thephoto-rejuvenating effects of alaser, with a greater degree ofspecificity and safety.

Any one of these procedurescan make a significant, dramaticand fast improvement to agingand sun-damaged skin.Combining two or more

procedures can fix multiple problems. If you need more information, Advanced CosmeticMedicine offers a complimentaryconsultation that allows Dr.Spoor-Baker to evaluate your concerns and pick the right treatment for you. It’s really notnecessary to wait to the New Yearto see a new you. It simply takesgetting started and moving forward, fast or slow. It’s all aboutwhere you want to go and howfast you want to get there. Don’tlet another three months go bybefore you do something – youmight wake up and two years havegone by!

Don’t forget that small stepsdone over a period of time canmake a big difference, too. Baby-fresh skin may be a long wayaway, but if you strive daily toslow down sun exposure, wearsunscreen and eat better, yourskin will improve. “My daily consumption of a whole food concentrate of fruits and vegetables for the past 10+ yearshas made my skin at 49 much bet-ter. I know that keeping my skin covered while doing yard work oroutside activities has saved mefrom huge amounts of sun damage,” adds Dr. Spoor-Baker.

Backpacks – check. New clothesand uniforms – check. Paper andpencils – check. These are just afew items that parents thinkabout on their looming back-to-school lists. Getting the kidsready to go back to school can bea costly time for parents andguardians. One thing they don’thave to worry about is shellingout cash for a new back-to-schoolhaircut. Clary Sage College andOklahoma Technical College, branches of Community CareCollege, are giving back to thecommunity by holding their 4thannual Cuts for Kids event. Thisexciting event offers free haircutsto school age children in theTulsa metro area.

Cuts for Kids will be heldon August 8 and 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. at ClarySage College, located at 3131 S.Sheridan, and on August 15 and16 from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. atOklahoma Technical College,located at 4444 S. Sheridan.

Last year, this event madeover 750 Tulsa students happy, and they are expecting an evenbigger turnout this year. Whilebeing supervised by master educators, cosmetology students

Appointments are not nec-essary, but parents are welcometo call to see about the wait timesince it can get busy. No stylingis done during this time. So ifparents and children are lookingfor styling or flat ironing, it can-not be done at the same time asthe free haircut. However, theyare giving to parents a ten dollarvoucher, Clary Cash, to be usedtowards the many services thatClary Sage offers, like hair care, skin care, nail care, or massage –another perfect back-to-schooltreat for the kids’ new looks. Orbetter yet, parents, use thevoucher for the much neededmassage after all the back-to-school frenzy.

Parents, rest assured thatyour children will be put in themost capable hands. Clary SageCollege and Oklahoma TechnicalCollege are licensed and accredited institutions offeringvarious diploma and degree programs. CSC offers programs

According to Teresa, “Theatmosphere of Cuts for Kids isfun, energized, and professional. Our students are excited to practice their technical skills aswell as their soft skills for cus-tomer service.” Both campusesare trendy in their appearance, promote health and wellness, and emulate the pure artistrythat goes on behind their doors.Teresa says, “Our students do anincredible job.” Since this is acommunity-driven function that

Do you remember playing the 20questions game in middle schooland jr. high? I do. It was a gamesimilar to Truth or Dare without thedare part.

The objective of the game wasto get participants to focus andanswer questions that they maynot want to admit. It was a gamedesigned to get to know yourselfand your friends (or potential girlfriend/boyfriend) better. The following are 20 financial ques-tions I ask in my office every day.You would be surprised at howmany truly don’t know theanswers. Go ahead….See if youcan answer them. I dare you!

1) How much money do you bring home each month? Your spouse?

2) How much money do you spend each month?

3) Where does it go?

4) Where do you want it to go?

5) How much debt do you have?

6) What are the interest rates on your mortgage, vehicle, credit cards?

7) What is important to you about money?

8) Are you rich? (hint: trick question)

9) What does rich mean to you?

10) How much do you save each month?

11) Do you max out your 401k?

12) If not, why not?

13) What is your strategy (or advisor’s strategy) for handling market volatility?

14) If I had told you 6 months ago that the stock market would be undervalued, would you have invested more, less, or pulled your money out?

15) Who is in “control” of the money at your house? If you are not, do you know the answers to these questions? You should.

16) What’s the one thing you could do today to start getting rich? (not robbing a bank, LOL)

17) Why haven’t you already done it?

18) When do you plan to retire?

19) What do you plan to do in retirement? Is that what your spouse wants to do too?

20) Will you have enough money? How do you know?

Hopefully these questions arefood for thought. May they ruffleyour feathers and get you off thatbump on the log. Who you trustmatters. Thank you for reading myarticle.

DDon’t Wait to Schedule Non-Emergency Surgery

By Sheryl Sowell

Roberta Wagle, bariatric coordinator at the Lap-Band®Center of Oklahoma at PinnacleSpecialty Hospital, sees it all thetime: patients waiting until theend of the year to move forwardwith their non-emergency orelective surgery. “Many peoplemeet their insurance deductiblein October and think they canwait until then to schedule theirnon-emergency surgery,” saysRoberta. “What most don’t realize is how long the insuranceprocess actually takes – it’s oftentwo to three months. If someonedecides they would like to havethe Lap-Band® procedure doneor need to schedule gall bladdersurgery, they really need to beginthe process in August.”

The insurance process islengthy for any non-emergencyprocedure, especially the Lap-Band® surgery, as insurancecompanies require that the surgery is proven to be a medicalnecessity. “Patients often thinkthey can simply meet with thesurgeon and set the surgery date. For some non-emergency surgeries, and the Lap-Band®procedure in particular, severalsteps must be taken,” Roberta

you want to take care of, such asgall bladder, cataract, breastreduction, or joint surgery, westrongly advise beginning theprocess now.” If you initially visitwith the surgeon in August, thesurgery itself can still be sched-uled for November or December.

“Basically, the insuranceprocess takes a lot longer thanpeople realize. If you know youare going to meet yourdeductible in October, themonth of August is when youneed to start the process of proving medical necessity to yourinsurance company,” addsRoberta.

Dr. Ladd Adkins of the Lap-Band® Center of Oklahomaoffers exclusively the Lap-Band®by Allergan to people who aremedically classified as morbidlyobese. The Lap-Band®Adjustable Gastric BandingSystem is the only FDA-approved gastric bandingsystem for patients who are atleast 30 pounds overweight, witha BMI of at least 30 and one ormore obesity-related comorbidconditions, including coronaryartery disease, type II diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and

explains. “Patients first attend an educational seminar. Then theyhave a personal consultationwith the surgeon. Next, thepatient must meet with their primary care physician, undergoa dietary consultation as well as apsychological evaluation, andcomplete any other preliminarywork that must be taken care ofin order for the insurance company to have a complete let-ter of medical predeterminationfor the surgery.”

When you think about it, itmakes sense that the processtakes so long. It can take a weekor two to schedule an appoint-ment with the surgeon, anotherweek or two to get in to see yourprimary care physician, an additional week to have the psy-chological evaluation scheduled– and so on. “In addition, thesurgery itself has to work withyour own schedule and the sur-geon’s schedule,” says Roberta.

After the predeterminationletter has been mailed, it oftentakes the insurance company 30to 45 days to reply. “If you’reinterested in Lap-Band® surgery,or if you have any other non-emergency medical situation

osteoarthritis.Those with the greatest

success pay close attention to thefoods they eat and exercise regularly, and typical weight lossis one to two pounds a week. Some foods are more difficult todigest than others, such asbreads and starches. As Dr.Adkins explains, “The systemactually forces people to makehealthier food choices. But that’swhat they need to turn their livesaround.”

The next free Lap-Band®educational seminars will be heldat 7 p.m. August 9 andSeptember 13 and 27. Call (918) 392-2806 to reserve yourspot.
