NNeed a Quality Contractor? By Joshua Danker-Dake

Cole’s Quality Construction doesjobs of all kinds and sizes, whether you’re looking intoremodeling, new construction, oran addition for a residential or acommercial property.

“Where a lot of contractorswill only do parts of jobs, we doentire projects from start to fin-ish,” says Doug Cole, co-owner ofCole’s Quality Constructionalong with his wife, Holly. “Wedo pretty much anything you canthink of on a house – we buildnew homes from the ground up,as well as garages, patios, decks, pergolas and chimneys. We doremodeling, additions, windows, siding, bathrooms, kitchens, roof-ing, painting, flooring, carpentry, doors, small repairs, large repairs, vanities, brick work, trim work, and gutters.”

Doug Cole has been in construction for 22 years, andhas been in business for himselffor 13. With the exception ofplumbing, HVAC, and electricalwork (for which he uses licensedand insured subcontractors),Cole is personally involved in allthe work on every job. “I enjoyconstruction and being creative,”he says. “Sometimes customersaren’t exactly sure what they wantwhen they get started on a job,

with the customer through theentire process,” he says.“Communication is important, asis making sure the customer staysinvolved. I’m always available if acustomer needs to reach me. Andwe always clean our job sites dai-ly. It’s your home – you’re theone who lives there every day,

and I’m happy to sit down withthem and draw up the job to givethem the best fit for what theyneed, whether it’s color charts, stain charts, wood types, or what-ever else.”

Cole makes it a point tokeep every customer in the loopthroughout each job. “We work

and we respect that.”Cole also emphasizes

customer flexibility. “Some customers, including many in themilitary who get discounts at cer-tain home improvement stores, like to buy the materials them-selves and have us do the labor, and that’s fine with us – we’ll

work with you however you wantto do the job. We’re also happyto break down our estimateshowever the customer wants.

“We work to keep pricesdown, and our prices are reasonable,” he continues.“We’re thorough in our contracts, and we’re honest andup-front about our costs. I makeit a point to always talk to everycustomer and get their approvalbefore we do any extra work –we’re always as transparent aspossible.”

No job is too big or toosmall, says Cole. “We’ve replacedjust a doorknob, and we’ve added25,000 square feet to a church. We’ll give you a free estimate, and we’ll be open and honestabout whether we’re the rightcompany for the job.”

Cole’s Quality Constructionis licensed and insured, and references are available uponrequest. For more information,to ask a question, or to schedulea free estimate, you’re welcometo give them a call or email them.

“When storms in life come,it doesn’t always have to be atotal loss – you can alwaysrebuild,” says Cole. “We have agood, strong foundation of family values, and we can helpyou rebuild.”

Cole’s Quality Construction offers remodeling, new construction, additions and much more for residentialand commercial properties.

HHelping Families Stretch BudgetsBy Paul Tackett

Just Between Friends continuesto help families stretch theirbudget by continuing to offerchildren's clothes and equipmentat unbelievable savings.

Just when the economyseems to be getting better, something else pops up, and itfinds a way to contribute to

Just Between Friends, thenation's leading children's andmaternity consignment salesevent, helps families find somestability and security by beingable to purchase an entire sea-son’s wardrobe, even school uni-forms, on a reasonable budget.

Marcy Leffingwell, one ofthe new owners of Just BetweenFriends Broken Arrow/Bixby,doesn't always know where tobegin when she starts talkingabout her JBF sales event."Families not only eat better, they live better because JBFhelps put some expendableincome back in the family budgetbecause of the great savings thatcan be found at a JBF salesevent," Leffingwell said.

Typically shoppers can experience 50 to 90 percent offclothes and equipment, compared to retailprices. "Moms, dads and grand-parents can get quality items fortheir children at amazingly lowprices and still be able to buy thegroceries for that month,"Leffingwell said.

Amber Post, franchisee ofSouthwest Tulsa and Owasso, was a JBF shopper before shestarted organizing her own JBFevents. "We were young collegestudents, broke and on a tight

inflation and the shrinkage ofeveryone's take home pay. Formany families, the toll on thefamily's budget continues andwith back to school around thecorner, many parents know buying clothes for their childrenand the necessary equipment canbe expensive.

budget," Post said. She had a six-month-old daughter the firsttime she shopped at a JBF andeven then, she was a slave tofashion. Before, Post had to relyon her mom and grandma to buythe really cute things. "I couldonly afford to buy her the basicsand shop the clearance racks, butonce I discovered JBF, it was likea dream come true," she said.Suddenly Post could buy every-thing she wanted for her and notjeopardize her family's budget.

After shopping once, shedecided to consign and receiveda check for $75 from items shesold, and she was hooked. It wasso easy to do, and a sales eventhas so much to offer in terms ofclothes, shoes, toys, books andmore for the upcoming season.

Daven Tackett, owner ofJust Between Friends Tulsa andco-founder of JBF, is mostpleased that the sale is a dignified way for a parent to buychildren's clothes at great savings. Moms and dads can feelgood about letting their childrenwear and play with the itemspurchased.

"My mother was divorcedand disabled, trying to raisethree girls on a fixed income. She did many creative things tomake ends meet, including

buying some of our clothes fromresale and going to garage sales,"Tackett said. "As kids, we didn'tknow there was any other way tobuy clothes. We were just alwaysexcited and happy about gettingsomething new to wear."

Families across the nationare realizing shoppingresale/consignment makes sense. For the upcoming season, JustBetween Friends has four areasales to choose from. SouthwestTulsa is scheduled for August 4-6at the Glenpool ConferenceCenter, followed by JBF Tulsa, the franchise system’s largestsales event, set for August 19-25at Expo Square. Owasso willoccur September 13-16 next toReasor's, and JBF BrokenArrow/Bixby is taking placeOctober 11-13 at the SpiritBankEvent Center. For more information, such as eventhours, go to JBFSale.com.

DDon’t Wait to Schedule Non-Emergency Surgery

By Sheryl Sowell

Roberta Wagle, bariatric coordinator at the Lap-Band®Center of Oklahoma at PinnacleSpecialty Hospital, sees it all thetime: patients waiting until theend of the year to move forwardwith their non-emergency orelective surgery. “Many peoplemeet their insurance deductiblein October and think they canwait until then to schedule theirnon-emergency surgery,” saysRoberta. “What most don’t realize is how long the insuranceprocess actually takes – it’s oftentwo to three months. If someonedecides they would like to havethe Lap-Band® procedure doneor need to schedule gall bladdersurgery, they really need to beginthe process in August.”

The insurance process islengthy for any non-emergencyprocedure, especially the Lap-Band® surgery, as insurancecompanies require that the surgery is proven to be a medicalnecessity. “Patients often thinkthey can simply meet with thesurgeon and set the surgery date. For some non-emergency surgeries, and the Lap-Band®procedure in particular, severalsteps must be taken,” Roberta

you want to take care of, such asgall bladder, cataract, breastreduction, or joint surgery, westrongly advise beginning theprocess now.” If you initially visitwith the surgeon in August, thesurgery itself can still be sched-uled for November or December.

“Basically, the insuranceprocess takes a lot longer thanpeople realize. If you know youare going to meet yourdeductible in October, themonth of August is when youneed to start the process of proving medical necessity to yourinsurance company,” addsRoberta.

Dr. Ladd Adkins of the Lap-Band® Center of Oklahomaoffers exclusively the Lap-Band®by Allergan to people who aremedically classified as morbidlyobese. The Lap-Band®Adjustable Gastric BandingSystem is the only FDA-approved gastric bandingsystem for patients who are atleast 30 pounds overweight, witha BMI of at least 30 and one ormore obesity-related comorbidconditions, including coronaryartery disease, type II diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and

explains. “Patients first attend an educational seminar. Then theyhave a personal consultationwith the surgeon. Next, thepatient must meet with their primary care physician, undergoa dietary consultation as well as apsychological evaluation, andcomplete any other preliminarywork that must be taken care ofin order for the insurance company to have a complete let-ter of medical predeterminationfor the surgery.”

When you think about it, itmakes sense that the processtakes so long. It can take a weekor two to schedule an appoint-ment with the surgeon, anotherweek or two to get in to see yourprimary care physician, an additional week to have the psy-chological evaluation scheduled– and so on. “In addition, thesurgery itself has to work withyour own schedule and the sur-geon’s schedule,” says Roberta.

After the predeterminationletter has been mailed, it oftentakes the insurance company 30to 45 days to reply. “If you’reinterested in Lap-Band® surgery,or if you have any other non-emergency medical situation

Sean didn’thave an answer, but his friend did – “Youshould open a Top That! Pizza.” At first,Sean thought the idea was crazy; the foodservice industry just didn’t seem like agood fit for him. But things changed andthe idea quickly grew on him.

As residents of Glenpool, Sean, hiswife Sheila, and their daughters Mikaylaand Addison would regularly shop and eatat the Tulsa Hills Shopping Center. Healways thought Tulsa Hills would be anideal location for Top That! Pizza, and theplans soon fell into place. Sean opened upshop in December of 2011 at 7466 S.Olympia. “The opening of the storestemmed from my love of the product, theperfect location becoming available, thehelp of my investors Eddie and MerrellBeach, timing, and an amazing team tohelp make things happen, includingGeneral Manager James Gaddis and StoreManager Andre Casteel,” says Sean.

and his colleagues Dr. Gary Fortner andDr. Steven Egleston. These physicianseffectively treat back and neck pain withIDD Therapy using the Accu-Spinamachine.

IDD Therapy was developed by ateam of neurologists, orthopedists andneurosurgeons to rehabilitate and healdamaged structures in the spine. “Weadminister treatment through interverte-bral disc decompression, referred to asIDD Therapy,” says Dr. Korgan. “It iscompletely non-invasive and utilizes FDA-approved, highly advanced computer tech-nology to deliver therapeutic distractionforces to targeted spinal segments.” Thetreatment provides static, intermittentand cycling forces on structures that maybe in pain due to distraction and position-ing. The purpose of the treatment is torelieve the pressure between the verte-brae, causing water, oxygen and nutrientsto flow freely throughout the spine and re-hydrate the discs.

Non-surgical spinal decompressionprovides a method for doctors to properlyapply a decompression force and create a

vacuum within the disc to allow bloodand oxygen to flow to the damaged area, which is critical to disc health and repair. The process helps reduce pressure on theaffected disc, relaxes and retrains muscles, and supplies muscles with blood and oxy-gen necessary for healing.

IDD Therapy is used to treat patientswho suffer from herniated discs, bulgingdiscs, posterior facet syndrome, sciatica, degenerative disc disease and general lowback and neck pain. Nearly anyone withback or neck pain can benefit from thetreatment. “Our patients are diverse. Wesee everyone from office workers to con-struction workers to retirees,” says Dr. Korgan.

The advantages of IDD Therapy arenumerous. The cost is minimal in com-parison to the cost of surgery. It is alsosafe and less painful than many otheroptions; in fact, most patients find thetreatment process to be comfortable andrelaxing. Perhaps the greatest benefit ofundergoing IDD Therapy is the ability tocontinue working during the course oftreatment. “Patients can continue daily

The course of therapy includesapproximately 20 treatment sessions andis completed in about 35 days. The firstten visits occur in two weeks. Each sessionis performed by a qualified medical techni-cian and lasts for a total of about an hourand a half. Treatments are custom-designed, with pain relief occurring atvarying times for each patient.

Treatment begins with internal heatapplied to the treatment area by ultra-sound, relaxing the deeper muscles andtissues. A hot pack is then administeredon the surface to help relax the patientand their muscles. Next, the Accu-Spinamachine administers a 25-minute treat-ment. It generally takes all 20 treatmentsessions for full hydration of the damageddisc.

During each session, the Accu-Spina

machine gently manipulates the offendingspinal segment, while helping stretch andre-tone underlying musculature. Theresult is improved lumbar health and painelimination in a significant portion ofpatients treated. “We have about an 80percent or higher success rate,” says Dr.Korgan.

The diagnosis and treatment processat Spinal Decompression is medical physi-cian directed, with a qualified doctor overseeing all procedures. “Qualitypatient care is paramount, and we assurethat all patient concerns are addressedand thoroughly explained prior to begin-ning treatment,” says Dr. Korgan.

QQuality Surgeon Worth the Drive By Sheryl Sowell

Marilyn Antell lives in FortSmith, Arkansas, but she travelled to Tulsa for her totalknee replacement surgery. Why?Because this is where Dr. RonaldLaButti practices.

Marilyn had been in painfor 10 years – at some point shehad taken a fall, and the discomfort became increasinglyworse over the years. She couldn’t walk for long distances, stand for more than about fiveminutes, or sleep through thenight. “I waited so long to dosomething about it because I’mafraid of hospitals. But the paingot so bad, I had to do something. Any kind of physicalactivity was nearly impossible, work was difficult, and I couldhardly ever sleep. People told meall the time that I needed to get awheelchair,” she explains.

Marilyn’s brother was theone to put a bug in her ear aboutresolving her pain problems. Hehad received a partial hipreplacement in Cincinnati andwas extremely happy with theresults. “He advised me not tosettle for just any surgeon. I visited three doctors in FortSmith and wasn’t comfortablewith any of them.”

the process was painful, but definitely worth it.”

Marilyn scheduled anappointment with Dr. LaButtiand made the drive to

northeastern Oklahoma. Shewas impressed with the surgeon’sexpertise and straightforwarddemeanor. “It’s frustrating when

Marilyn’s daughter workedat a publishing company in FortSmith and knew a few peoplethat had received hip or kneereplacements from Dr. LaButti

in Tulsa. She asked one of themto give Marilyn a call. “This person highly recommended Dr. LaButti and explained that

doctors try to ‘play’ you for theirown benefit. I liked that Dr.LaButti was honest and highlyprofessional,” she says.

Dr. LaButti performedMarilyn’s total knee replacementon her left knee in February ofthis year. “He told me that myknee was in the worse shape hehad ever seen! But he was veryreassuring that I’d be ok, and Itrusted him. I had many friendspraying for me, and I trustedthat God had led me to the rightdecision. Four months after theoperation, the pain was completely gone,” says Marilyn.“It’s amazing. Now I have a kneethat works.”

This summer, Marilyn dug ahole in her yard and planted acrepe myrtle tree. She was overcome with emotion whenshe realized she hadn’t done thatin 10 years. “It was a very bigmoment for me. If I had planteda tree before the operation, Iwould have paid for it big time, with extreme pain and lack ofsleep.”

Marilyn’s quality of life isdrastically better than it’s been inyears. “Walking feels like whatwalking is supposed to feel like. Ican depend on my knee now.”

She works as a church secretary, and her job is now easier to perform and much more enjoyable. “My job description is‘go-fer’ – I’m constantly on thego, running errands, cleaningand scrubbing, making bankdeposits, grocery shopping forfood that the church donates tolocals in need. I can get in andout of the car without pain, unlike before. Recently we heldan event at the church, and I waseven able to set up tables andpick up chairs to move.”

Marilyn will soon return toDr. LaButti for a replacement ofher right knee. She says herexperience with Dr. LaButti andhis kind, caring staff makes thedrive to Tulsa well worth it.

A total knee replacement by Dr. LaButti has given MarilynAntell the chance to garden and enjoy life again without

constant knee pain.

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

There are only five “iBlock” units in theUnited States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.
