I was blessed this past yearwith the honor of sitting atthe bedside of one of my veryfirst clients while I assistedhim and his wife witharranging for hospice.

These are long termclients and we have walkedquite a long journey together. Many, many yearsago this couple came in tosee me with the little moneythey had saved.

They told me their hopesand dreams for when theyretired. We came up with aplan. Over the years theyhave developed their wealththe old fashioned way.

They worked hard, kepttheir expenses low, saved alot, got laid off, changed jobs, rolled over pensions, and401k’s. Life didn’t always goas planned.

We adjusted our plan toaccommodate life. A fewyears ago we worked with anestate planning attorney todevelop a trust, a living will,a power of attorney, a healthcare directive.

They bit the bullet andinvested in a joint long-termcare policy. Finally, theyretired. Within a couple ofmonths of retiring, Chuckwas diagnosed with terminalcancer.

As I walked down the hallof the hospital to his room, Icouldn’t help but think aboutall of the sacrifices they hadmade and all the planningwe had done. As I entered hisroom, he recognized me andsaid “Melanie, this is notwhat we had planned!” I said“I know.

We’ve got to get back ontrack!” We laughed for a

moment and then cried for afew. “ I want you to promiseme that you will help Maryfigure out all of the financialstuff and I want you to makesure she takes the next stepand holds on to the things wehad dreamed” he said, and Ipromised I would.

Sometimes things workout exactly as we planned.Sometimes God has a differ-ent plan. In the end, you willwant to know, that no matterwhat, your loved ones can goon and that you have takencare of them. A life welllived… beginning with theend in mind. And tomorrow,I begin again…with Mary.

I am so very grateful that Iget to do what I do and helppeople along this journey. For more information go towww.waterstonewealth.com.Melanie Hasty-Grant,Experienced LicensedProfessional Counselor andManaging Principal atWaterstone Private WealthManagement. LPL Financial.Member FINRA/SIPC.

The semi-retiredchild care administrator and herdaughter-in-law, Tammy Bemies, had been discussing starting theventure for a while. While driving around Claremore oneday after dropping her childrenoff at Claremore ChristianSchool, Tammy found the littlewhite house now referred to asthe Cotton Cottage.

“We have been very lucky,”said Jan. “The owners of theproperty were phenomenal during the start-up process. Theycompleted all the upgrades weneeded and helped with theremodel of the house. They trulywere instrumental in helping getthe place open for business.”

And since they opened fivemonths ago, they haven’tstopped going. Jan and Tammyare continually looking for waysto offer their customers personalized service.

“We make a great teambecause we work so well togetherand balance each other out,” saidJan. “I do all the quilting, andTammy handles the garments

and décor. She has a wonderfuleye for color and is very creative.”

Stacked floor to ceiling,Cotton Cottage has a very largeselection of quality, name-brandfabrics. Some of their most popular brands include RedRooster, Amy Butler, Free Spirit,Blue Hill, Hoffman and RJR. Asthe store’s name suggests, all oftheir fabrics are 100 percent cotton, and they carry a widerange of colors and styles including solids, prints, floralsand children’s designs. They alsocarry some unique characterprints such as Route 66 andJohn Deere. If you are lookingfor a specific color or design thatmay not be in stock, the staff atCotton Cottage can special orderbased on supplier availability.

In addition to great, brand-name quilting and dress fabrics,Cotton Cottage also sells laminated cotton that can beused for making waterproof creations like raincoats, bags andlunch bags. They also have agood line of flannels in stockand carry patterns, notions andfat quarters.

“If you’re a quilter, youknow what fat quarters are andwe have a great selection at agood price,” said Jan. “All of ourfat quarters are high quality and

all are priced at $1.99.”The Cotton Cottage is also

home to a long-arm quiltingmachine. If a customer createsthe quilt and needs to have itsandwiched together, they canhave it done in house starting atone cent per inch plus a $10 setup fee. They also do a little bit ofspecialized embroidery and cancreate some garments.

“We want to get the wordout – whether you want to makea nice garment or complete alarge-scale quilting project, wecan help you,” said Jan. “As wegrow, we will continue to addservices that cater to the needsof our customers, and we lookforward to growing this businessand establishing a good customerbase by providing quality prod-ucts and customer service.”

Cotton Cottage is openMonday through Friday from 10a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdayfrom 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Christian author Carol Roundalways tells people, “If you hadtold me when I was younger thatI would be speaking in front oflarge groups of my peers, I wouldhave replied, 'I don't think so!'”The only ‘C’ Carol ever made incollege was in speech class. “Iwas so nervous, I would grip thepodium with sweating hands. SoI tell people now, ‘God reallydoes have a sense of humor.’”No one is more surprised thanCarol when she looks over theevents of the last year and real-izes that she has not only spokenon several occasions in front oflarge groups of women, but hasbeen interviewed on numerousradio stations across the U.S.and appeared on Christian televi-sion programs, including stationsin Atlanta, Georgia and SantaFe, New Mexico. "When I firstreceived requests to speak, I wasnervous and wasn't sure I coulddo it," says Carol. "However, mypastor said, 'Carol, God doesn'tcall the equipped; he equips thecalled.' He was telling me totrust God and keep my eyes onHim."

Carol’s speaking topics arebased on her writing, which, unlike speaking, she has always

used as daily devotionals. Herfifth book, "by FAITH alone,"another collection of hercolumns, was released inNovember.

With these completed projects under her belt, Carolhas received even more requeststo speak at women’s events, andher audiences continue to growin size. Her topics are designedto aid women in their personaland spiritual growth, with suchseminar titles as “Journalingwith Jesus,” “Perfecting yourPersonality,” and “Sharing yourFaith Story.” Carol often incor-porates humor into her writingand speaking, which is evidencedby other speech titles: “Are Youa Worry Wart?,” “I’m notMartha Stewart,” and “Don’tLook at Your Butt in theDressing Room Mirror.”

“I want to encourage otherwomen,” says Carol. "We live ina broken, confusing world. If weallow the media to dominate ourlives with all the negative news,we could easily just give up."

This call to encourage otherswas what helped Carol to notonly overcome her fear of speaking to her peers, but toactually enjoy the experience.

been completely comfortablewith because she has loved toread and write since she was a little girl. Her first speakingengagement came about in 2007when she was asked to speak to alocal church group in response toher self-syndicated column, “AMatter of Faith,” which runs in12 Oklahoma newspapers(including “Claremore DailyProgress”) and is featured in aninternationally-read online newspaper. She began doingsmall group sessions on the topicof prayer journaling and wasasked at every session, “Do youhave a book?” With writing asher first love, Carol did not haveto be urged very strongly to produce what her listeners wereasking for: "Journaling withJesus: How to Draw Closer toGod." After receiving morerequests to speak, she publisheda companion workbook to helpwomen put the principleslearned in "Journaling withJesus" to practical use for them-selves. Her workbook, "The 40-Day Challenge," is her fourthbook. She has also authored "AMatter of Faith" and "FaithMatters," both compilations ofher weekly column, which can be

“We all have a story to share ofwhat God is doing in our lives, and we need to be sharing thatstory with others, including ourchildren and grandchildren," saysCarol. “When God opens thedoor for us, we need to walkthrough it. For me, that opendoor is when God called me tostart speaking.”

Do you have an elderly loved one– perhaps your mother, father ora grandparent – whose currenthome is no longer the best placeto live? The reasons for needingto transition into an independ-ent living community, residentialcare home, assisted living facilityor nursing home are vast andmay include declining physical ormental health, lack of a supportsystem available in case of emergency, or inability to takecare of home maintenanceneeds. “Many people realize,‘This is what we need to do,’ butthey’re unsure exactly how to goabout it,” says Michelle Brown,co-owner of Assisted Transitionwith Mark Smith. “Our servicesare geared toward families thathave planned ahead and are pre-pared for the change, but needhelp in finding the right homefor their loved one.”

Co-owner Mark Smith wish-es he’d had access to this servicewhen it was time for his father, who had Alzheimer’s disease, tomove out of his home. “He wasa wanderer, and we unknowinglyplaced him in a home that wasnot able to care for his needs. Hewas only there for a very shorttime before we had to move himagain. In addition to the distress,we were out several thousanddollars. If I had been given someadvice like Assisted Transitionoffers, this situation could havebeen avoided.”

Assisted Transition alsoworks with the VA to assist vet-erans in making sure they receivetheir full benefits. This service isespecially close to Mark’s heart,as he is a veteran of the AviationBranch of the United StatesArmy.

Michelle and Mark trulycare about seniors in our community and want to providefamilies the resources they needto make the transition as

All services are provided atno cost. As aregistered nurse for 28 years, Iam also able to read between thelines and provide insight into thesenior’s needs that the familymay not be aware of.”

After the initial meeting toestablish the senior’s needs andpreferences, Mark or Michellewill narrow down the choicesavailable and personally tour andevaluate the facilities. Upondetermining the best optionsavailable, they will personallydrive the senior and family to

Get a handle on your finances in2013. Are you wasting money? We’ve compiled a list of moneyboo-boos that could be costingyou your hard-earned money.RCB Bank loan officers MattStreeter and Michelle Milleroffer their advice on how to correct the mistakes.

1. Not making a budget – orattempting to stay near it. Sitdown and really look at yourmonthly expenses, Miller suggests. Where might you beable to cut? Just looking at whereyour money actually goes is a great tool to saving. “That $1.50coffee doesn’t seem like a lot atthe time until you realize cuttingit can save $350 a year,” she says.

2. Not building an emergency fund – Any savingsis better than no savings. MattStreeter says your annual bonus, tax refund or a small amounteach month is a great way tostart. “You just have to start setting it aside,” he says. Milleradds, “It is easier to save if youhave the money automaticallydeducted from your paycheck ormain checking account.”

3. Not paying your creditcards off each month – “It’slike tossing your money out the

insurance companies review iteach year, so why don’t you?”Streeter asks. Shop around occasionally to see if there’s abetter deal.

7. Not having a retirementplan – “Everyone should startsaving for retirement as early aspossible,” says Miller. If youremployer doesn’t have a 401kprogram, open an IRA. Even$10 a paycheck can add up overthe years.

8. Housing expense exceeds30% of your gross income – Ifyour housing expenses are morethan 30% of your gross income, you should consider scalingback, suggests Miller. “Today’seconomy is tough, and if youexceed this ratio you are vulnerable to serious financialproblems with any disruption ofwages or family emergencies.”

ADDITIONAL TIPS:Everyone makes bad moneydecisions from time to time. The key is to recognize themwhen they happen.

Share your goals and concernswith family, or a friend. Theymay have a solution that workedfor them that could also work foryou. They can also help hold you

window,” Streeter says. “Moneyspent on interest charges and latefees can add up fast. After interest, how much did thatsweater you bought with yourcredit card really cost?”

4. Living above your means –Carrying a balance on a creditcard can become crippling if itgets out of hand. A better solution is to have a specialaccount that you use for“extras,” says Miller. Make a pactwith yourself to set aside a smallamount every paycheck. “Ideallyyou save up the cash and youdon’t need to use credit; however, no interest financingfor large ticket items can be agood alternative. As long as youcan pay it off in the free timeallotted,” Miller says.

5. Impulse buying – “If youcan’t give yourself a day to thinkabout a purchase, that’s animpulse,” says Streeter. “Evenworse, if you put that impulsebuy on a credit card.” If you findyourself in this situation, backaway and go home.

6. Not reviewing your insurance needs annually – orat least every two years. Thisincludes auto, homeowners, lifeand others. “Your employer and

accountable for your goals.

Make a list of three achievablefinancial goals. Example: set upan auto transfer to your savingsaccount; bring lunch from homeinstead of eating out every day;or consider adjusting yourcable/internet package.

Melanie Hasty-Grant and KenGrant own Waterstone PrivateWealth Management, withoffices in Owasso and at UticaSquare in Tulsa. “With 20+combined years of experience inthe financial industry, we’vebeen around the block morethan once,” says Melanie. “Welove what we do and are in thefinancial business for the longhaul.”

Clients know Waterstonehas the experience and trackrecord for understanding themarket. “When clients meet withus, they have trust in us andwhat we do,” says Melanie.“Those who place their trust in usknow that we do the right thingsfor the right reasons with nomixed loyalties. Our clientsknow we have a well thought-outplan and that we will be there forthem through thick and thin.”

Melanie and Ken enjoy theirindependence in the industry, but clear through LPL Financial, the largest independentbroker/dealer in the country.“Because we are not employeesof LPL Financial, we have nodownward ‘sales pressure’ to sellclients something they do not

specifically to clients’ needs.“Clearing” through LPLFinancial means that while beingindependent, Waterstone is alsoregulated by FINRA, have annual audits, and recordkeepingand statements are produced by

need,” said Melanie. They holdno inventory of “stuff” that theyhave to sell, and they have noproprietary products. Thismeans they have access to allinvestments available on the market, and they customize plans

LPL Financial. Waterstone’sclients have the best of bothworlds: having their money managed in a way that is solelyin their best interest and havinga large company standing behindthem and their money.

Ken and Melanie are frequent contributors to nationaltelevision and radio shows suchas CNBC’s “PowerLunch,” “FoxBusiness News,” “MarketWatchRadio” (broadcast from the NewYork Stock Exchange), and “TheWall Street Journal.”

“The recent volatility in themarkets have been a wakeup callfor most investors that the ruleshave changed and they needsomeone they can trust to helpguide them towards their financial goals,” said Ken.

In today’s crazy market, theold “buy, hold, and hope” strategy is not an effective way tomanage money, the Grants agree.Yesterday’s accepted school ofpractice was to buy qualityinvestments and hold them forthe long term. “This is still themainstream school of thought,”said Melanie, “but the markethas proven over the last 14 yearsthat the philosophy is no longereffective. You now need muchmore.” Melanie refers toWaterstone’s overall strategy as“grow, preserve, protect.”

“It’s a more tactical, activeand protective way of managingmoney,” she explains. Melaniesays that clients now need a “buyside” and a “sell side” strategy, awell thought-out plan and strategy to determine when andwhy they are buying an investment, and what they

expect to accomplish. It’s notacceptable to just throw moneyin the market and hope for thebest. Waterstone clients wantand need strategies to help themmeet goals for safety and securi-ty.

We may call it “service,” butwe now need something thatgoes way beyond that. We needsomeone who is going to bethere for us to face whatever liesahead. Melanie summarizes itperfectly: “When you get laidoff, when your employer declaresbankruptcy, when America goesthrough a recession and you’rescared, when you’re goingthrough an ugly divorce anddon’t know where to turn, whenyou get older and need help, when your spouse dies andyou’re devastated, or when youare terminally ill and in hospicecare – it’s during these times youneed someone you can call athome, who will come to youwherever you are, who will standwith you in your grief or indecision, and who will be therefor your spouse or children whenyou cannot. Waterstone will beyour advocate, to help you thinkclearly and get things done. That's why trust truly matters. You are our client, not yourmoney.”

These days who you trust matters. When clients come in for a meeting, theyknow they can trust Melanie, Ken, and Waterstone Private Wealth Management.

With an additional 1,000 squarefeet, vaulted ceilings, a suspended wood floor in the aerobic room and other amenities, Fitness Time forLadies is open for business intheir new location at the NorthPark Medical Center located atthe corner of Highway 66 Northand Lowery Road.

The new 5,000-square-footgym – for women only –includes a much larger aerobicroom with a little over 1,000square feet to accommodate thegrowing demand for Zumba fitness classes, step and regularaerobics, yoga, and kickboxing.

The former facility’s location did not allow room forgrowth, says Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka, owner. “We had a lot of requestsfor a larger Zumba room, but wehad no capability to grow at ourformer location.”

A larger facility and room togrow were two reasons Dr.Hrdlicka cited for the move.“We also have many clients wholive on this side of town in theSequoyah area. This move pro-vides a facility to meet the needsof the women in this area.”

In addition to the increasedspace for classes, Fitness Timefor Ladies now offers four

equipment and tanning beds.High school and college studentsare now eligible for a discount at$43.99 per month, whichincludes the full use of amenities.

The upscale 24/7 women’sfitness center also offers a fullline of aerobic exercise equipment, including treadmills, stationary bicycles, stair steppersand elliptical machines, all outfitted with televisions.

In addition to classes andaerobic equipment, Fitness Timefor Ladies offers Nautilusstrength training equipment aswell as free weights to help clubmembers get in tip-top shape.“For the women who get overwhelmed when they walkinto a gym full of equipment, apersonal trainer is available onSaturday at 10:30 a.m. for a newmember orientation session onall of the gym equipment,” headds. “And it’s free.”

What else is free? The all-inclusive gym includes use ofthe sauna and a massage chair.“When you compare FitnessTime to other gyms, you need tocompare apples to apples,” saysDr. Hrdlicka. “If you add upeverything available at our gym,you will find that if you paid for

tanning beds and two showersand includes all-new audio andvideo surveillance equipmentthroughout the building. “Wealso have a children’s room available for mothers and a security system so that they canview their children on the closedcircuit televisions while workingout,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We donot, however, offer child care.”

What sets Fitness Time forLadies apart from other gyms inthe Claremore area? Besidesbeing for women only, theatmosphere is personal, private, clean and aesthetically pleasing. It is also an all-inclusive gym, which means that there are noextra charges for fitness classesor tanning. “Many gyms chargeextra for their classes,” says Dr.Hrdlicka. “We do not. Whenyou pay your monthly fee, youhave full use of our facility, including tanning. You get thewhole gym for the price of a tanning membership.”

The all-inclusive membership, if paid monthly, is$49.05. However, if paid inadvance, the membership fee isonly $40 per month or $480 fora year. Rates have not increased, but the facility has more to offerin the way of space, additional

them separately at others, wecome out on top. In addition, wepride ourselves on having a cleangym. We are very particularabout staying clean and keepingthis place a personal, privateatmosphere for our ladies. Wewant the gym to feel like it is anextension of their home.”

Home for the relocatedwomen’s gym is now next doorto Mobility Plus and immediately behind TulsaTeachers Credit Union. The

name and faces are the same;only the location has changed asFitness Time for Ladies opens itsdoors to a brighter, larger facilityto accommodate area women’sfitness needs.

The women’s workout facility has a new, larger location and more amenities, with the same great monthly rate.

Kathy Trevino had been overweight her entire life, fromchildhood throughout herteenage and adult years. Whenshe had children in her late twenties, the pounds really beganto pack on and her weight problem got worse and worse. Bythe time she was in her early forties, she weighed 262 poundsat 5’ 4”. “I had severe chronicpain in my lower back, and myphysician told me that if I didn’tdo something about my weight, Iwould be in a wheelchair by theage of 50,” says Kathy.

One of Kathy’s coworkerssuggested she look into weightloss surgery, and that her insur-ance might pay for it because itwas causing her back pain. Kathychecked with her insurance com-pany and was referred to Dr.Luis Gorospe at OklahomaPremier Bariatrics. “I had heardabout Lap-Band surgery withcelebrities like Al Roker, andfound out that it is less invasiveand has a quicker recovery timethan other weight loss surgeries.I went to Dr. Gorospe’s seminarand decided I had to nothing tolose,” says Kathy.

In December of 2007, Dr.Gorospe performed Lap-Band

even for my children. I’m nolonger the obese mom; I’m anormal mom.”

Kathy recommends Dr.Gorospe to anyone consideringweight loss surgery. “Dr.Gorospe has an excellent bedsidemanner, and he will actuallyspend time with you to go overyour questions and concerns. Ibelieve he’s not only a good doctor, but a good person.”

If you are morbidly obese

surgery on Kathy, and her lifehasn’t been the same since.Kathy has lost around 110pounds and kept the weight off.“The changes in my life havebeen dramatic. I no longer havepain in my lower back, I canmove around much better, I haveso much more energy, and I’mable to see my kneecaps! There’salso the physical part – at 47, I’venever looked better. It haschanged every aspect of my life,

and suffering from medical complications stemming frombeing overweight, surgery may bethe right answer for you. Withso many options available, it canbe stressful and confusing choosing where to go, who tosee, and what surgery is right foryou. To help answer these questions, Dr. Gorospe offersfree weekly seminars.

During the seminars, Dr.Gorospe explains the entireprocess from beginning to endand assists the small group ofattendees in determining if theyare qualified for surgery. Heoffers roux-en-y gastric bypass, adjustable banding (i.e. the Lap-Band surgery that Kathyreceived), and gastric sleeve surgeries.

Gastric bypass and gastricsleeve surgeries are generally preferred for patients who needto lose a very large amount ofweight (between 80 and 100pounds, with a body mass indexor 40 of higher) and suffer fromco-morbid conditions such asdiabetes and high blood pressure. “These surgerieschange the person’s hormonalcomponents immediately, andthere is almost 100 percent

improvement of their diabetes ifthey are on one oral medicationonly. Approximately 80 percentof patients who were on highblood pressure medications nolonger need their meds afterthese surgeries,” explains Dr.Gorospe. “Lap-Band surgery istypically for those who need tolose a smaller amount of weight, who are approximately 50pounds overweight with a BMIof 30 to 34.”

Dr. Gorospe says the bestpart of his job is seeing theincredible changes that takeplace in his patients’ lives.“Before the surgery, many of mypatients are depressed, hate theirrelationship with food, and aretired all time. When they losethe weight, their lives are prolonged and their quality oflife is greatly improved. Theirrelationships with loved ones arebetter, and they’re able to dothings they’ve never been able tobefore. It’s very gratifying tohelp people live longer, healthier, happier lives.”

Weight Loss Can Change Your Life

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

There are only five “iBlock” units in theUnited States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

Since the Drug Free Communities grantoperates in partnership with HCP, manyof her passengers are the same. This con-nection between the two busses allowsseat swaps as needed. A few additionalpassengers ride this bus because someof the suitcases also represent projects andstrategies designed to reduce underagedrinking as well as prescription drug mis-use among Rogers County youth.

Mendy Stone, executive director ofVolunteers for Youth, uses this analogy toexplain the partnership that has devel-oped between her agency and HCP. “Bybringing diversity to the table and poolingour resources with law enforcement, schools, youth organizations, the healthdepartment and more,” says Stone, “wecan battle this problem together.”

Through state, federal and CherokeeNation grants, the two entities have beenable to integrate their goals to fight

substance abuse in Rogers County."Healthy Community Partnership wasfounded on prevention, and that is also thebasis of all our efforts at Volunteers forYouth," Stone added.

While Volunteers for Youth's DFCproject focuses on underage drinking andsubstance abuse in youth, HealthyCommunity Partnership has been mainlyfocused on prescription drug misuseamong youth and adults since its formationin 2008. “We work closely with the DrugFree Communities project director, theRogers County Sheriff’s office, local policedepartments, the Oklahoma Bureau ofNarcotics, nine Rogers County schools, graduated sanctions and juvenile court(county and city), Rogers County YouthServices, and many others in the community,” DeLozier says. “We are fortu-nate to have been able to bring variousgroups to the HCP table in an effort to

While many associate abuse with illicit drugs, DeLozier cites the followingfigures: “Only 13 percent of Oklahoma'sdrug overdose deaths involve illicit drugs.According to the Oklahoma MedicalExaminer’s office, there were 872 fataloverdoses related to prescription drugabuse in 2010 and 2,500 nonfatal overdos-es,” she says. “However, for the first sixmonths of 2011, there were 794 fatal over-doses.” According to DeLozier, 94 percentof those fatal overdoses involved the mix-ing of drinks with prescription drugs. “It’sa deadly combination,” she adds.

What people don’t realize, saysDeLozier, is that “if it is not your prescription, it’s not okay to take it. It’snot safe. It’s not legal. It’s not acceptable.”Educating the public about the dangers is

Carolyn worked for many years as apostal clerk at the downtown Tulsa postoffice, but since her retirement, she hasturned her attention from this nationallyfocused organization to the growth andpreservation of her own small hometown. In the past few years, she has done allkinds of things to raise money for andinterest in Inola, everything from becom-ing involved with Project Chicks, a localquilting and fellowship group that meetsevery Tuesday evening at the Inola

library, to picking up and selling over 100pounds of pecans. One of her maindesires is to form an Inola investmentgroup that will dedicate itself to trainingyoung people and putting empty buildingsin historical downtown Inola to good use.

“I have so many ideas and goals forInola, but there is not enough of me to goaround,” she says with a laugh. “I’m looking to network with others who areenthusiastic about our town.”

John Burgess of Tulsa under-went knee replacement surgerywith Dr. Ronald LaButti in 2011after over two decades of kneeproblems.

“I was very active in highschool sports,” Burgess says. “Igraduated from high school in

1980s.”Since then, Burgess has

undergone two arthroscopic surgeries on each knee. “Itseemed like every five years orso, I’d have to have one or theother operated on. I finally quitplaying sports around 1995

1967 and went into the military, where there was a lot of intensetraining, and I stayed active inintramural sports. I didn’t haveany knee problems then. Aftermy military years, I played a lotof sports until I began to developknee problems in the late

because of the knee problems.”In 2007, Burgess was

informed he would probably notbe able to have another arthro-scopic surgery on his right knee, and would most likely have tohave it replaced. “My knee painwas getting so severe that walk-ing was becoming very difficult, and running was completely outof the question. I had tried allthe over-the-counter medicationsI could find, but things continu-ally worsened.”

In 2011, Burgess went to seeDr. LaButti. “My supervisor hadjust undergone hip replacementsurgery, and he was very pleasedwith his results. He recommend-ed Dr. LaButti to me.”

Dr. LaButti recommendedknee replacement, and Burgesshad the surgery done on hisright knee. “By then, I was inconstant pain. Walking was verydifficult, and I had developed asevere limp. Sleeping hadbecome an on-again, off-againexperience every day. I was tothe point where I would eitherhave to have the surgery or retire– and I’m too young to retire.”

Burgess’s surgery went well,he says. “The nurses and thera-pists at the hospital had me upand walking with a walker theday of the surgery. After a cou-ple days in the hospital, I wasreleased, and then I had hometherapy for a week. Aside fromthe swelling in my knee, I neverreally experienced any pain fromthe surgery.”

Burgess was on the walkerfor two weeks, then a cane fortwo more. “After four weeks, I

was walking without the cane,”Burgess says. “After five, I wasdriving my car and riding mymotorcycle. After six, I was danc-ing.” After seven, Dr. LaButtireleased him to work withoutrestriction. “At week seven, when I began outpatient rehabili-tation, I was told that I wouldneed at least 115 degrees ofmovement before I could stop.On my first day, I had 130.”And, Burgess says, he is now freeof limitations.

But, he adds, he wishes hehadn’t waited. “I waited becauseI didn’t want to go through itmore than once and I had beentold that the replacement kneewould only last 10 or 15 years. But I wish I hadn’t, because thesurgery was no problem. Oncethe swelling went down, I wasable to get back to normal; every-thing else was just walking andexercise. I’ve had no problemswith the new knee, and wouldreadily recommend knee replace-ment by Dr. LaButti to anyoneneeding the procedure.”

You turn it on and it flowsfrom your tap, easy, convenient, potable water, technologically advanced purified water wholly fit forhuman consumption – but isit? Despite clean water laws, our tap water continues to becontaminated with a host ofpollutants – pollutants knownto increase the risk of serioushealth conditions. Conditionsamplified by the addition ofchloramines -a combination ofchlorine and ammonia, to ourdrinking water. Sounds morelike something you wouldclean with than drink.

Worldwide chlorine hasbeen used to disinfect drinkingwater. Although it is far saferthan the bacteria it destroys, when combined with chloramines and chlorine dioxide a powerful carcino-genic Trihalomethane (THMs)is formed. Linked to liver, kidney and nervous systemdisorders, THMs are formedwhen chlorine reacts with naturally occurring materialsfound in water. If you thinkdrinking bottled water protects you from these harmful contaminants, I amthe bearer of bad news. 40%of bottled water is bottled tapwater.

Yes, you read correctly. Notonly is 40% of bottled watertap water, bottled water mayor may not have received additional filtration. An inde-pendent study done by theEnvironmental Working Groupfound arsenic, THMs and 36other harmful pollutants hidden in bottled water. Inaddition, drinking from a plastic bottle is a bad idea.Plastic bottles containBisphenol- A or BPA, a synthetic hormone disruptorlinked to learning and behavioral problems, alteredimmune system function, prostate and breast cancers, early puberty in both genders, and a contributor to the healthrisks surrounding obesity. There is, however, a way to protect yourself, your family, and loved ones.

The most economical andenvironmentally sound choiceyou and your family can makeis to purchase and install awater filter in your home.Granular Carbon and CarbonBlock Filters are the most common types of counter topand under counter water filters. Granular activated carbon is recognized by theEPA as the best available technology for the removal oforganic chemicals such aschloramines, herbicides, pesticides and industrialchemicals.

For 26 years EnvironmentalResources has provided waterand air filtration services toTulsa businesses and resi-dences. Sold, installed andmaintained, our filters removea host of contaminants foundin drinking water. From thetap over the kitchen and bathroom sinks to shower-heads, ice machines, watercoolers, refrigerators, wholehouse systems, whole businesses and more, our timetested water filters deliverpure, great tasting water.Today drinking filtered water is simply a health consciousthing to do.
