Nearly every day I hear folks tell meabout why they think they should notinvest in the stock market right now. Some of them seem to be relativelyreasonable fears about investing, some not so much. I do declare! I havesome stories I would tell you about allthe excuses I have heard….all the wayback to the stories my Mamaw used totell about the Great Depression of 1934(that stuff would curl your toes!), butthat would take more than a month ofSunday’s to recount. So, I will give youthe most popular excuses I have heardover the last 13 years and see if you canrelate to any of them.

1999: The Y2k bug is about to crash allthe world’s computers. “We will haveno accounting of our money at thebank or on our brokerage statements!”2000: The dot-com bubble burst. “Themarket is crashing. It will never comeback!”2001: Terrorist attacks destroyed bothWorld Trade Centers and the hit thePentagon. “The nuclear bomb is next.We need to have all of our moneyunder a mattress at home!”2002: Corporate Accounting Issues.“Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossinghave all betrayed investors thereforeall companies are corrupt and weshould not invest!”2005: Hurricane Katrina wiped outNew Orleans! “This is the beginning ofthe end!”2008: Sub-prime mortgage crisis/Global Financial Crisis. “The banks arecollapsing. There will be no more

economy!” (Don’t ever watch MSNBCin a crisis! That’s another story alltogether!)2009: Worst recession since the GreatDepression. “The market won’t comeback for 20 years!”2011: Europe’s sovereign debt crisis,U.S. Debt Ceiling. “No one in the worldis going to have any money! We are allgoing to hell in a handbasket!”2012: Presidential Election pendingNovember 2012. “The U.S. deficit is sohigh that America can’t regain itsfinancial strength!”2012: The Mayan Calendar endsDecember 21, 2012. “The earth’s gravitational poles are going to reverseand we will all fall out into space. Therefore, there is no need for retirement planning.” (This one takesthe cake!)

Here is ONE good reason why youSHOULD invest in the markets:$23,288,100. This is the amount, a

mere $10,000 invested in the marketsin January of 1934 would have beenworth on December 31, 2010, basedon the performance of the S&P 500index.

Emotionally we are always thinking of reasons not to invest in thestock market. Clearly these headlinesand the fears that they create devisevolatility in the stock market. The truth is the markets always climb

a wall of worry. If you stick your headin the sand to avoid the fears andworry, the markets will pass you by.

It matters where you are invested. It matters who you choose to help you.Find someone who can help you investyour money and manage the volatility.Find someone who can help you dealwith your fears through commonsense. PPersonal Pet CareBy Lorrie Ward

When she came to work for Dr. Greg Strathe in January of2012, one of the first things thatHospital Director KarenHutchinson noticed was how personable Dr. Strathe was withpatients and their owners. “Somany times I’ve seen him walkright out into the waiting roomand pet the animals while he istalking to their owners before thepet is admitted to the examiningroom area,” she says. “I’ve beenin other clinics, and this usuallydoesn’t happen.”

What was a pleasant surprisefor Karen is a normal action forDr. Strathe. “I’ve found that thishelps develop a relationship withthe animal and the owner. It isvery calming for the animal,” heexplains. “My goal is to partnerwith pet owners for the best possible pet care – it’s not abouta one-time visit. If I don’t buildthat lasting relationship, I feelI’ve failed.”

Dr. Strathe and his staff areall about relationships. Heopened his practice in Owasso in1993 and moved to his presentlocation in 1997. He has extend-ed his hand of friendship beyondjust his business, having servedon the Owasso School Board andby supporting community andlocal rescue groups. He has also

Hospital “Best VeterinaryHospital” for the past severalyears and “Best Service” amongstall Owasso businesses in 2012.Dr. Strathe’s commitment to hiscommunity is also reflected bythe fact that he often speaks tostudent groups and trains inter-ested students both as volunteersand employees.

served as the chairman for theOwasso Chamber of Commerce.“Owasso has been good to us,”he says, referring to himself, hiswife Cheryl, and their five children. “So we want to giveback to Owasso.” This attitudemay represent the reason whyOwasso Reporter readers havevoted Strathe Veterinary

Kyle Albin was one of thesestudents who credits Dr. Strathewith inspiring him on his currenteducational road to becoming aveterinarian. Kyle recalls that healways wanted to be a veterinari-an, but when he attended theOwasso 8th grade health fair, helistened to Dr. Strathe speak andwas so encouraged by his philoso-phies that he approached Dr.Strathe afterward. Dr. Stratheinvited Kyle to come by and vol-unteer at the clinic and see howhe liked it. Then when Kyle wasold enough, he joined the staff, where he worked until he completed two years at TulsaCommunity College. He is continuing his education at OSUand has applied for vet school.

Kyle remembers several aspectsthat made his time at Dr. Strathe’s office invaluable.“He is friendly, considerate andapproachable,” Kyle says. “Hespends time with pet owners andexplains things in a down-to-earth manner.” Kyle plans to finish his veterinary studies andreturn to the area to practice, utilizing all the things that helearned from Dr. Strathe aboutcustomer service. “Dr. Strathehas been a huge role model onhow to run a practice,” Kyle says.“He has helped me greatlytoward my veterinary dreams andprofessional goals.”

For Dr. Strathe, praise fromsomeone like Kyle is especiallysignificant. “It’s always a compliment to me when pastemployees continue to come backin and bring their pets to us aswell,” says Dr. Strathe, “becausethey know the ins and outs ofour staff and facility and whatgoes on behind the scenes.”

Behind the scenes, Dr. Strathe, Dr. Hendricks andDr. Selby, as well as the rest ofthe staff, are committed to pro-viding excellent health care forpets. “It’s not about me, or evenabout our staff,” says Dr. Strathe.“It’s about improving the qualityof life for your pet. Please feelfree to drop by. For your conven-ience our doors are open sevendays per week.”

Dr. Strathe emphasizes developing relationships with pets and their ownersat his Owasso practice.

YYou Have a Choice By Lorrie Ward

In a world of medical networking, it is easy to forgetthat you have a choice. In pastyears, Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka ofClaremore Surgeons hasobserved that when people visittheir general practice physician

groups, and these physicians areencouraged to refer within theirnetwork,” says Dr. Hrdlicka.“I’m not in any of those net-works, but anyone who is in thenetwork can come to see me –they just need to make sure theytell their family doctor who theyprefer.” Dr. Hrdlicka explainsthat the doctor will not refuse tosend a patient to him, but notes,“If you don’t make your choiceknown, they will most likelyrefer you within the network.”

When you visit Dr. Hrdlicka, you will find thathe offers a variety of choices ofhis own, performing a wholehost of general surgical proce-dures, including general surgery, vascular surgery, advancedlaparoscopy, surgical oncology, colonoscopy, vasectomy, minimally invasive surgical procedures, breast cancer surgery, mammosite, laservenous closure, and laser/lighttherapy. Endoscopic procedureslike colonoscopy and EGD arealso available at ClaremoreSurgeons, and Dr. Hrdlicka performs surgeries at St. John’sOwasso, ClaremoreRegional/Hillcrest, andMemorial Surgery Center inTulsa. In addition, he is actively

and are told they need surgery, they assume they have to use thesurgeon to whom they arereferred.

“Medicine is changing inthat many physicians areemployed by certain hospital

involved with the Vascular &Vein Laser Center, which offerscosmetic solutions with littledowntime like Botox, Juvederm,Pixel, laser skin tightening, andvein ablation. For informationon cosmetic procedures, visitwww.idealskinsolutions.com.

Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka specializesin general as well as vascular andendovascular surgery. Born andraised in Claremore, he receivedhis undergraduate degree at theUniversity of Oklahoma and hismedical degree from OklahomaState University’s College ofOsteopathic Medicine. He thenwent on to Ohio University’sDoctors Hospital in Columbus, where he completed a residencyand fellowship in general sur-gery. Next, he completed a sub-fellowship in endovascular sur-gery at the Arizona HeartInstitute in Phoenix. Even as hiseducation took him far fromClaremore, when it was time topractice medicine, he returned tohis hometown, where he hasestablished himself within thefamily business formed in 1970by his father, Dr. Larry Hrdlicka, and fellow surgeon, Dr. LarryYoung.

Because of his Claremorehistory, it is natural that Dr. Kyle

Hrdlicka has what he describesas a “true fondness” for thetown. He has established this ashis home base, actively supporting the ClaremoreChamber of Commerce andClaremore High School sportsprograms. Claremore Surgeonswas recently voted the ClaremoreChamber of Commerce’s SmallBusiness of the Year – the firsttime a physician’s office has everreceived this honor. Dr. Hrdlickahopes the Claremore communitysees his commitment and realizesthe difference stability makes.“In today’s day and time, you’reseeing physicians who are nottied to a community anymore.Since physicians are oftenemployed by a group, you tendto see a lot of movement fromclinic to clinic, town to town,” hesays. “We’ve been here for 40years – we’re not going any-where.”

Dr. Hrdlicka of Claremore Surgeons explains that patients do not have to select the surgeon their primary care physician refers them to.

While cleansing is the first step in any skin care ritual,it is often overlooked. Typical manual cleansing canleave behind dirt and oil trapped in pores. This build-up can damage the appearance and health of your skin and keep your skin care products from working like they should. Clarisonic Sonic Skin Cleansing Systems use a patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements per second to gently, yet thoroughly remove 6X more makeup and 2X more dirt and oil than cleansing with your hands alone. Cleaner skin is the first step toward healthier skin. And healthier skin is smoother, more radiant and more beautiful.

MMarble Elegance Shows Appreciation By Sheryl Sowell

Marble Elegance has served theRogers County area for 23 years, proudly offering exemplary customer service and high- quality products including cultured marble, PolyStoneGranite, TruStone, and onyx. The talented Marble Elegancecrew customizes each piece onsite in their shop and showroom, located at 15212 E. 440 Rd. inClaremore. As a “Thank You” tothe community of customers and

and visit with Mike and his staff,as well as enjoy burgers grilledup by Cary Froman of FromanOil & Propane Company. DallasJones, a good friend of Mike’sand the owner of CherryBerryCorporate, will be the guestspeaker at the event. MarbleElegance is blessed to be a partof the CherryBerry family. Theyprovide bar tops and solid surface inserts for the yogurtmachines for CherryBerry stores

builders they’ve established relationships with over the years,Marble Elegance is hosting aCustomer Appreciation Day onFriday, October 26 from 11:30a.m. to 1 p.m., and everyone isinvited.

Owner Mike Self explains,“This is a way for us to give backto our customers and builderfriends, and be together for somefun and fellowship.” A tent willbe set up for attendees to mingle

all over the United States. Marble Elegance has solid

relationships with many qualitybuilders in the Claremore area, including Ron Griggs,Oklahoma Royal Homes,Redwood Construction, QualityHomes, C E Moody, MoneyHomes, Strategic Homes,Russell Judd, Denham Homes,Anglen Custom Homes, EpicHomes, Butler Homes, GreenRiver Homes, Rod Henry, FordHomes, Roland Homes, ScottNymen, Brett Fleak, Tony Long,Leon Callison, and Ryan Kelly. In addition, Mike is on theboard of directors for the RogersCounty Home BuildersAssociation.

Marble Elegance specializesnot only in cultured marble cre-ations, but offers products fromBurlstone (trophies), ArizonaStone, and TruStone. Teammember Nickie Roberts reportsthat TruStone is especially popular right now; it is an engineered stone with a graniteimage photo-fused into thestone. “Granite is all the rageright now, but it is costly andoften requires a lot of upkeep,”says Nickie. “TruStone is non-porous, so it offers the

granite look without the granitecost and maintenance.”

Many customers are surprised to learn that MarbleElegance does not use machineryto create its masterpieces. “Everypiece is hand grounded. We takepride in offering hands-on customer service, and we areblessed to have built wonderfulrelationships in the community,”says Mike. “Our CustomerAppreciation Day is a small wayto show how grateful we are.”

Mike adds that he givescredit to the Lord for providinghim with an amazing staff andcontinued success. “It is ourfaith that has sustained usthrough the bad and good economic times.”

Add Marble Elegance as afriend on Facebook to see lots ofphotos of their work, or stop bythe showroom.

Owner Mike Self invites the community to come enjoy fun, friends and burgers on Friday, October 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.at Marble Elegance.

CGuys, Find that Special Gift for Your LadyBy Lorrie Ward

Gentlemen, start your engines –it’s time to go Christmas shop-ping! Yes, you read that right. Ifyou have trouble choosing that

“Many men stay awaybecause they read the word ‘boutique’ and assume this willbe a women’s-only event,” saysAngela Henderson, co-chair ofthe Holiday Boutique withShelly Jones, who adds, “Butthis is a great place for men tocome and shop for the ladies intheir lives because it’s a one-stopshop – you can buy your gift andget your purchases wrapped andready to go right under the tree.”Shelly points out that men sometimes bring that special ladyalong so that she can let himknow just what items she wouldplace on her Christmas wish list.

Of course, ladies love thisevent also – with great reason, asit features a wide array of itemsdear to the female heart, including jewelry, clothing, cookbooks, and decorating, household, sports team related,

and holiday themed items.Angela and Shelly would likeeveryone to note the schedulechange this year. “We are replacing the brunch we used tohave for pre-shopping on Fridaymorning with a Thursday nightExclusive VIP CocktailReception,” she notes. “Wewanted to give vendors extratime to replenish their boothsbefore the main event and alsoto accommodate people whowork on Friday mornings."Admission to the Exclusive VIPCocktail Reception, which isfrom 6 to 8 p.m., is $25, andgeneral admission tickets forFriday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. are $12. Rogers StateUniversity students pay only $5 for general admission if theypresent their student ID cards.

Shelly and Angela expectthe event to host around 30booths this year from great areabusinesses like Claremore’s J&JPharmacy and Oologah’sChrome Cowgirl. Vendors canapply for booth space until allslots are filled. “We had a lot ofinterest in items for teens lastyear,” says Angela. “So we wouldlike to invite those who have

such items to consider a booth.”Both ladies assure potential

vendors they will have an experience like no other. “Wehave volunteers from eachagency who help bring in andtake out items for boothrenters,” says Shelly. “That kindof help usually isn’t offered in avendor situation.”

Donna Ross, Rogers CountyUnited Way executive director, isdelighted to have Shelly andAngela co-chairing this event.“These ladies are both directorsof United Way agencies – Shellydirects The Manger and Angelaheads up Tri-County CASA – sothe success of this event is highon their priority list,” she says.“The 26 Rogers County UnitedWay agencies are always ready tohelp – we are like a family.”

SSix Do’s and Don’ts WhenTraveling on a Cruise

By Jocelyn M. Wood

Fall is in the air; winter is not far behind. It’s time to start planning your winter getaway.

Get away from the coldweather this January on a 10-dayHawaiian cruise with RCBBank’s Experiences travel club.Spots are still available for travel-ers to jump on board. Traveldates are January 10-19, 2013.

“A $600 deposit reservesyour space and customers can geta full refund before October 3,should they change their mind,”says Lori Nuzum, RCB BankExperiences Club Director andtrip coordinator.

Leave your coat in the closetand pull out your favorite sum-mer dress. Travelers will experi-ence the islands’ diverse beautyand lively history, including PearlHarbor, Kona’s famous coffeeplantation and lush gardens, waterfalls and exotic wildlife.

Lori Nuzum and RCBExperiences Club Director AnitaJudd-Jenkins have coordinatedand traveled on more than 500trips. They offer six do’s anddon’ts of traveling on a cruise.

Do pack light. “You’ll neverwear all the clothes you take,”

Don’t bother packing ahairdryer or iron. “Hairdryerscan be found practically in everyhotel and on every cruise line,”says Nuzum. “Airlines are very

strict on luggage weight. Packiron-free clothes, so not to wasteprecious weight and avoidincreased luggage fees for the tripout or back.”

Do be adventurous. “Pick

says Lori Nuzum. Nowadays, cruises are going toward a morecasual dining experience, like theHawaiian Cruise. “It’s called free-style cruising and creates a more

relaxed, comfortable environ-ment,” says Nuzum. Anita Judd-Jenkins suggests picking twobasic colors – black, tan or navy –and building your wardrobearound them.

activities that stretch your comfort level, regardless of age,”says Judd-Jenkins. “It’s theseactivities that build confidence, stretch boundaries and make thebest memories to tell and tellagain back home.”

Don’t bring your stress.Hawaiian’s don’t do anything in ahurry. “Their motto is hangloose,” says Nuzum. “Everythingis slow and easy, no worries. When traveling, take the opportunity to walk slower, breathe deeper, relax and leaveyour worries at home.”

Do bring elastic waist “buffet” pants. Cruises areknown for their endless buffets.“There are breakfast buffets, lunch buffets, after lunch buffets, dinner buffets and even midnightbuffets,” says Nuzum. “Give yourself a break and plan toloosen the belt loops.”

Don’t forget snacks and layered clothing for the plane.Depending on where you depart, flight times to Hawaii vary andairlines are serving fewer complimentary snacks or meals.“After you pass security, you canpick up food and drink from awide variety of airport restau-rants and take them on theplane,” says Nuzum. “Once youget on the plane your choices arelimited and you will probably paya pretty penny for a basic sandwich.” Judd-Jenkins recommends layering clothes ontravel day, to be prepared for various temperatures on theplane. “You can be cold oneminute, hot the next,” she says.

HHip to a Pain-Free Life By Lorrie Ward

Many people think joint replacements are only necessaryin one’s later years, when jointsbegin to show signs of a lifetimeof wear and tear. But joints canbe irreparably damaged at anyage. Mike Hardesty of Claremoreis living proof. “I was in my 30swhen I injured my hip in a soft-ball game,” Mike recounts. “Theinjury left me with constant painand a bad limp.” When thesetwo things did not go away, Mikevisited a doctor and had an MRI,which revealed a grim prognosis:that he would eventually need tohave a hip replacement.

“I put up with the problemfor several years,” says Mike, whorelates that things became sobad, he was taking 20 to 30aspirin a day just to be able tofunction and sleep. “Finally, Icouldn’t stand it anymore.” Mikehad seen advertisements for Dr. Ronald LaButti and decidedto call for a consultation lastsummer.

“I already knew what hewould tell me – that I neededthe hip replaced,” said Mike.“But I really appreciated that hewas upfront and straightforwardwith me right from the beginning, and didn’t try to force

with me about the pain thatwould come afterwards,” Mikesaid. “But he said the outcomewould be better.”

And it was. For Mike, someresults were immediate. “Iremember waking up in the hospital,” he says, “and noticingright away that the nagging pain

anything on me.” Once Mike decided on

surgery as his best option, Dr. LaButti relayed exactly whathe could anticipate during hisexperience, from how much timeoff work he would require tohow much pain he could expectduring recovery. “He was honest

in my groin and hip I’d been living with for years was gone.”Dr. LaButti had predicted any-where from six to twelve weeksoff work, and Mike returned tothe job in seven. When he did,his employees observed theamazing changes. “Everyonenoticed my limp was gone,” he

recalls. “Now they all say I walkfaster than anyone in the shop –and I don’t have to pull myselfup and down the stairs like I didbefore, either.”

It has been a little over ayear since his surgery, and Mikenow embraces a whole range ofactivities that were impossiblebefore, both major and seemingly minor. “I no longerhave to have help putting myshoes on,” says Mike. “And Ionly take aspirin for headaches.”Mike purchased an above groundswimming pool to help him withrehabilitation, and he can easilyget up and down the ladder, which is something he could nothave done before the surgery. And best of all, he can ride amotorcycle again. “I bought a bigold 900-pound bike,” he sayswith a grin. “There was no way I could ride before or even holdit up.”

Now that he’s become accustomed to a normal existence again, Mike wonderswhy he put off the surgery for solong. “I tell people, ‘If you’rehaving pain, don’t wait so manyyears and let it deteriorate like Idid,’” he says. “I should have visited Dr. LaButti a lot sooner. My life is so much better now.”

Mike Hardesty of Claremore is living without pain after a total hip replacement from Dr. LaButti.

Mike Hardesty can now ride his motorcycle again.

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

There are only five “iBlock” units in theUnited States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.
