Like no other political contest inrecent memory, the nation is transfixed on the 2012 presidentialelection. But while Main Street looksto the fall campaign with great antic-ipation, many investors do not. Whenyou step into the voting booth thisfall, you should consider which can-didate is not only the right person forthe nation, but your personalfinances as well. Indeed, this is thePolitics of Investing.

Today’s issues of energy, gas, credit, shrinking home values, andrising health costs all can seem verydaunting. But as President HarryTruman told us, the United States hasalways anticipated the future withcourage and excitement. “Americawas not built on fear. America wasbuilt on courage…” As investors, wehave witnessed extremely difficulttimes, from assassination to war tooil embargoes to crippling reces-sions. And in every case, we have notonly persevered, but have gone on tonew highs.

Think back some 75 years, andtoday’s economic concerns can beput into much better perspective. The country was debilitated by theDepression when Franklin D.Roosevelt was elected president in1932. Congress, and our nation, hungon every word of FDR’s first inauguraladdress, hoping for national insight. He gave us national inspiration. “Letme assert my firm belief,” Rooseveltsolemnly intoned, “that the onlything we have to fear is fear itself.” Ofcourse, he was right. And, desperateas those days were, $100 invested

after that historic speech would havegrown to some $442,000 (averageannual return 11.90%) by December31, 2007. Granted, even $100 washard to come by back then. ButRoosevelt’s message was not aboutmaterial things. Roosevelt’s wordsthen, and still today, speak tofaith…in our nation, in our future, and in ourselves.

(Investment growth of $100 (from3/06/33 to 12/31/07) is based on theS&P Index, which is an unmanagedlist of 500 widely held U.S. commonstocks frequently used as a measureof the U.S. stock market perform-ance. This index is not available fordirect investment.) Ned DavisResearch, 2008.

If anyone tells you that America’sbest days are behind her, they’relooking the wrong way.” ~ George H.W. Bush.

It’s almost as if every visit to thegrocery store, every gas station fill-up, utility bill, credit card statementand mortgage payment is gettingharder and harder to make. It canmake you miserable. In fact,

economists have a way to measure it.It’s literally called the Misery Index, and it monitors the nation’s unem-ployment and inflation rates. InJanuary, 2012, the Misery Index reg-istered 11.23. Not great. But a far cryfrom the post-World War II record of20.76, set in 1980. Speaking of mis-ery, Ronald Reagan said, “Recessionis when your neighbor loses his job.Depression is when you lose yours.”We have certainly seen extremelyhigh unemployment as of late. Yeteven considering those dismal days, investors who sat on the sidelineswould have missed out on some sig-nificant opportunities, including thebull markets of 1985, 1998 and 2002.Source: miseryindex.us, 2012.

Finally, one last quote…Thomas “Tip” O’Neill, Jr. (1912-1994)once famously said, “All politics islocal.” O’Neill knew – perhaps betterthan most – that everything fromcity council elections to presidentialpolitics centers on bread and butterissues. More than a few presidentshave been unseated on economicissues alone. So it would be understandable if you were to askyourself this fall, “Which party will bebetter for my investments?” Pleasevote responsibly! MMartial Arts Not Just for KicksBy Lorrie Ward

It has often been said that success breeds success. But thisstatement is missing something:what bred that success in thefirst place?

Chris Velez, owner ofMartial Arts Academy inOwasso, believes that by teaching a child that persever-ance and commitment can leadto success, you teach him or hernot only what it takes to be successful, but how it feels alongthe journey – and that journeystarts with a goal or desired destination. “The importance ofa young person setting a large, specific goal like the ones foundin martial arts is seeing that goalthrough,” says Velez. “Rarely hasa young person had the opportu-nity to set such an ambitiousgoal and then endure all thepain, time and effort it takes tobring it to fruition; so, in manycases, there isn’t a proper calibra-tion of time and effort that leadsto the reaping of a result.”

Velez describes this processas a “team effort,” one that takesa particular type of cooperationfrom the student, their parents, and the martial arts instructors. The students set their minds tothe goal and do the work toreach it. The martial arts trainers

have the ability or life experienceto follow through completely ona major goal, such as obtaining ablack belt. “They still have tolearn not to get discouraged atthe time and effort it takes,” hesays. “The process changes theirmindset to a new way of think-

ing that permeates everything intheir life.” This is where parentalguidance becomes so important.

“Adults and parents alreadyhave a degree of understandingto what it feels like to pursue a

make it a priority to teach thestudents what they need to helpthem achieve their objectives. The parents help the students setthese goals and then provideguidance and encouragement. “Ifstudents, parents, and kids areon the same page,” says Velez,

“we can recoup the benefits ofthis formula with major longterm and lasting results.”

According to Velez, it isimportant for parents to realizethat most students do not yet

major goal, so in nearly all cases, the parent is setting the goal forthe child more they are for themselves,” he continues. “As astudent goes through this experience, they begin their dayto day grind to feel what sixmonths or a year of work feels

like, and they begin to calibratetheir expectation of work andthe amount of time it takes toreap the benefits.”

Velez points out that thiswhole new mindset will be

helpful later in life, as the students will translate this understanding to the work environment. For instance, theywill understand what it means towait through an initial six-monthprobation to receive benefits ona new job. Velez relates thatadults who have never learnedthe difference between the “feeling” of a waiting period oftime as opposed to the “reality”often have to learn the hard way.“They often quit and move on afew times before they learn that’sjust how it is,” he says.

Velez believes that throughmartial arts training, with trainers, parents and studentsworking as a team, the student isset up for success, since it is notleft up to chance whether theywill make it to the end and martial arts keeps its completefocus on the finish – black beltstatus. “It seems to me that if achild were to set a goal and notmake it in formative years, it ismore damaging than never setting a goal at all,” says Velez.“Through this process, they havedeveloped a definiteness of purpose.”

According to Chris Velez, the lessons students learn in martial arts can positively impact their entire lives.

NNeighborhood Neuter

By Lorrie Ward

If you have a pet that needs to bespayed or neutered and you’relooking for a caring, safe andaffordable place to have the pro-cedure performed, there is stilltime to take advantage of thefirst Neighborhood Neuter eventat Family Animal Medicine inOwasso. This event will run inApril and May every year andoffers a discount on a compre-hensive spaying and neuteringpackage, including pre-op labwork, hospitalization, anesthesia, and medications.

Dr. Jenny Nobles and Dr. Gena Guerriero of FamilyAnimal Medicine concentratespecifically on pet populationcontrol, pointing to statisticalevidence provided by TheNational Council on PetPopulation. Some of the mostastounding statistics show thatanywhere from six to eight mil-lion cats and dogs enter shelterseach year, and of that number, three to four million (half) areeuthanized. The AmericanHumane Association reportsthat these huge numbers arecaused by three main factors:people regarding pets as disposable or inconvenient, peo-

ple choosing to buy pets frombreeders rather than adopting, and irresponsible breeding prac-tices by pet breeders themselves.

In addition to the fact thatspaying and neutering helps control the number of stray androaming animals who eventuallyfind their way into such shelters,Dr. Guerriero and Dr. Noblesalso point to the health benefitsof sterilizing pets and emphasizethat the earlier the procedure isdone, the better. “Research hasshown that in females, every heatcycle increases their chance tohave mammary carcinomas andpyometra, conditions similar tobreast cancer and endometriosisin humans,” says Dr. Guerriero.“While we are very interested incontrolling the numbers ofunwanted pets, we are also inter-ested in the health of the indi-vidual animal.”

Dr. Nobles also points tothe behavioral advantages of having pets neutered as early aspossible, especially when itcomes to males. “If the male isneutered before four to sixmonths of age, he is less likely todevelop bad habits such as marking and aggression,” she

says. “He is less likely to jumpfences to find a female in heat, and a spayed female is less likelyto roam as well.”

This instinct to roam is oneof the reasons some pets showup in shelters – they become lostand simply cannot find their wayhome. Sadly, this contributes tothe fact that only 30 percent ofthe dogs and far fewer cats (only 2 to 5 percent) that arriveat shelters are reclaimed by theirowners, according to the studyby The National Council of PetPopulation. To help increase thenumber of pets reunited withloving families, Family AnimalMedicine is offering a discounton microchip insertion during aspay or neuter procedure, while the pet is anesthetized for surgery.

Dr. Guerriero and Dr. Nobles hope for a greatresponse from the communityfor this first-year event andencourage everyone to marktheir calendars for next year aswell if they plan to acquire a newpet. “The numbers in these shelters are huge,” says Dr. Guerriero. “We hope to doour part to help control thenumber of strays and roamersand the pet population overall.”

Family Animal Medicine is hosting their inaugural Neighborhood Neuter event this month, offering a discounton spaying and neutering.

Breast augmentation is a very common procedure in the practice of most plastic surgeons. If you are considering breastenhancement, it is important to understand the process you will go through before, during, and after surgery.

My personal approach begins with determining what breast sizethe patient has in mind. By reviewing the before and after photographs in my albums, or pictures the patient may havebrought in, I can begin to understand the desired result. We alsohave each patient place different size implants in their bra to seewhat look they find most attractive.

During the surgery I temporarily place “sizers” in the pocket I createunder each breast. These can be inflated to different sizes, and byviewing the patient in the upright position, I can more accuratelydetermine the correct size.

Another technique that I have found useful is using the Keller Funnel implant delivery device. A silicone gelimplant will slide through this bag into the incision and the pocket under the breast. This allows a quickerinsertion process through a smaller incision that is less traumatic to the implant and surrounding skin.

iiBlock – “Robotic” Total Knee ReplacementBy Sheryl Sowell

Head of the class.Compassionate. Straightforwardand confident. Skillful. Thebest. All of these phrases havebeen used to describe Dr.Ronald LaButti by his patients, and with good reason. He hasproven to be devoted to hiscraft, helping thousands of peo-ple overcome disability and suf-fering associated with hip andknee pain. On April 3, 2012,Dr. LaButti made local historyby being Tulsa’s first orthopedicsurgeon to perform computer-assisted robotic total kneereplacement surgery using thePraxim Computer-AssistedNavigation System in conjunc-tion with the iBlock, a roboticautomated cutting block whichinterfaces with the computernavigation system. This is amajor advancement in the fieldof joint replacement surgery.Dr. LaButti has been using navi-gation since 1999 and was thefirst physician to bring naviga-tion to Oklahoma.

The brand-new technologyproduces a 3-D image of theknee, which allows for superiorsurgical accuracy and alignment. The iBlock and NanoBlock

my patients,” says Dr. LaButti.“When compared to more tradi-tional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides asignificant advantage not onlyfor the surgeon, but for thepatient as well. When a joint isreplaced, even a miniscule mis-alignment between the implantand the bones can harm jointperformance and longevity. Thisinnovative technique allows forprecise measurements madedynamically in real time.”

Most conventional totalknee replacements require

cutting guides, part of thePraxim System, offer real-timevirtual planning technology followed by automated placement of the cutting guide, which allows the surgeon tomake more precise bone cuts. This creates optimal alignmentbetween the knee implant andsurrounding bones. The auto-mated, computer-assisted naviga-tion system which Dr. LaButtiused is only the fifth of its kindin the entire country.

“I am very excited to offerthis extraordinary technology to

surgeons to temporarily drive arod into the bones to serve as ananchor for the cutting devices. The Praxim System eliminatesthe need for the rod, reducingthe risk of formation of poten-tially dangerous emboli to thebrain. Another benefit is thatpatients using the Praxim sys-tem do not need additional MRIor CT scans, minimizing expo-sure to radiation, as well asreducing time and costs.

Dr. LaButti is very pleasedto offer this technology to hispatients, as their wellbeing and

success is his ultimate goal. “Iam extremely proud to beTulsa’s first orthopedic surgeonto offer patients access to themost advanced technology in thefield of joint replacement,” saysDr. LaButti. “It’s an amazingsystem that is highly accurate, creating a more precise alignment and fit that will feelbetter and last longer. This isimportant news, especially nowthat baby boomers are gettingjoint replacements at evenyounger ages.”

There are only five iBlockunits in the United States, andDr. LaButti is the only orthopedic surgeon in northeastOklahoma trained to use thistechnology. If you have kneepain or have been told you needa knee replacement, you owe itto yourself to schedule a person-al consultation with Dr. LaButti.

AA Crash Course inCollision Shops

By Shelly Robinson

Having an auto accident can beoverwhelming, especially whenyou have to deal with collisionrepairs. You need your vehiclefixed quickly, but you want tomake sure it’s repaired safely andat a trustworthy shop. Your insur-er may refer you to a direct repairshop, but you wonder why theywant you to go there – is it foryour benefit or theirs?

Randy and Liz Pruitt ofPruitt’s Auto Collision inOwasso feel consumers are wiseto ask these questions and more.“It’s like anything else,” saysRandy. “Until you are in theposition of having to decide whoto use, you may never give itmuch thought.” With over twodecades in the auto repair busi-ness, the Pruitts are a goodsource for information.

Liz uses the comparison ofmedical insurance to explain thedifference between a direct repairshop and an independentlyowned shop such as Pruitt’s. “Adirect repair shop is like anHMO for collision repairs; it’soffered as a convenience, but theshop signs an agreement thatmeans they work for the insurance company, not for you.”

pocket and be reimbursed, orthey will have to pay the differ-ence in repair costs if they chooseto use a shop not recommendedby their insurance agent. “We’veeven had customers who weretold that their repairs would notbe guaranteed if they didn’t use adirect repair shop, which is simply not true,” says Liz.

Today’s vehicles have manysafety systems in place, and theymust be properly repaired orreplaced after an accident inorder for them to perform correctly in a collision. Bumpersare one of the most frequentlydamaged parts and one that iscritical to provide proper protection in a crash. “Always askwhere the parts are coming from– are they new or after-market orrefurbished?” Randy advises.

Randy says the bottom lineis being able to trust the shop.Randy is ASE and I-CARtrained, and is certified on theChief frame machine and PPGpaint systems. The Pruitt’spainter, John Nash, adds over 40 years of experience, and Jason Linzy has over 15 years experience. Tulsa Tech studentNathan Haar is a shop helper.

As a result, these direct repairshops are obligated to limit yourrepairs to your insurer’s costguidelines, and not to the strictquality and safety standards setby your car’s manufacturer.

On the other hand, an independently owned shop ismore like a PPO plan. Pruitt’sAuto Collision does not have acontract with any insurance company. “Our goal is to repairthe vehicle the way the customerwants it repaired, using originalequipment manufactured parts,”states Liz. “As an independentshop, we have the flexibility tosay no to inferior parts that adirect repair shop may haveagreed to use.”

The Pruitts are seeing moreand more customers who sharethat after an accident, they havecalled their insurance companyand been assured that their repairwill be handled more quickly, orwith less paperwork or a betterprice, if they use a repair shoprecommended by the insurancecompany. Liz says sometimesthey are even told they can goanywhere, but the adjuster can’tget there as quickly, they willhave to pay for a rental car out of

Free estimates and frontdoor service welcome you atPruitt’s. Just pull up under thecanopy, and Randy will evaluatethe damage and give you a written estimate for parts andlabor. There is a Hertz Rent-A-Car onsite, and Pruitt’swill be happy to work with your insurance provider, while providing you the final sayin repairs.

MMothers Would Kiln for This PotteryBy Lorrie Ward

The Pottery Cottage has settledin nicely at its new and biggerlocation on downtownClaremore’s main strip at 323W. Will Rogers Blvd., which is awonderful development for own-er Leslie Cohen because historicdowntown Claremore has alwaysbeen one of her favorite places. That’s why she is happy toannounce the Pottery Cottage’sparticipation in Downtown FirstNight. Being held May 5 andcontinuing the first Saturday ofeach month through July, thisevent will feature different gamesat each participating shop, withprizes awarded to participants.

Downtown First Night kicksoff what Leslie promises to be a“very merry month of May” forPottery Cottage. Mother’s Day isMay 13, and Polish potterymakes a great gift for any motheron your list. “Whether they liketo cook and bake or just appreci-ate good quality,” says Leslie,“mothers love this pottery.” Inhonor of Mother’s Day, Leslie isoffering free shipping for thosewhose mothers live out of state.

On May 19, The PotteryCottage will have a table at AVintage Affaire at the BelvidereMansion, where you could findthe perfect item for an upcoming

make great heirlooms. “Peopleoften tell me of Polish potterythat is passed from generation togeneration, and they come in topurchase settings for childrenand grandchildren,” she says.

summer wedding or for thatgraduate on your list. As a mat-ter of fact, Leslie notes, there aremany people who purchasePolish pottery for children andgrandchildren, as the pieces

“Having that family heritage isstill important to people – andthey are creating a tradition ofquality.”

These highly functional andattractive items have anotheradvantage: they are versatile.Whether you like all of yourplace settings to match exactly,or if you like a more mix-and-match approach, Polish potterycan help you create the table ofyour dreams. Leslie points to oneparticular customer, CynthiaTerhune of Claremore. Cynthiahad originally purchased a Polishpottery set on QVC. Shortlythereafter, she discovered Leslie’sshop, and because Leslie receivesher pottery from the same facto-ry as QVC, she was able to getCynthia a pattern that balancedwith the first one. Leslie relatesthat now Cynthia is purchasingsix different patterns. “Her tableis eclectic, and yet the settingscomplement each other,” saysLeslie. “The color scheme andoverall idea of the table are thesame, but each setting is unique– and that’s what makes it beautiful.”

Leslie points out that thereare also those who like to stickwith a strictly blue and white color scheme, with different or

matching patterns, and she feelsthese make lovely tables as well. The important thing is that eachperson is able to express herselfin her own unique way.

Sometimes people haveenjoyed their current Polish pot-tery pattern for a time, but areready for a change. For them,Leslie will be setting up a resalecorner in the shop, where peoplecan swap their Polish pottery fora different pattern. Also comingsoon: a website where customerscan purchase Pottery Cottageitems from the comfort of theirown homes.

Even after the website is upand running, Leslie hopes hershop will encourage visits to WillRogers Boulevard. “I’m still veryinvolved in the building up ofdowntown Claremore,” saysLeslie. “I’m always excited tohelp preserve the history of myhometown.”

The Pottery Cottage’s stunning variety of Polish pottery is an excellent gift idea for Mother’s Day.

FFeeling Out of Whack?

By Sheryl Sowell

Do you find yourself irritableand snapping at loved ones forno reason? Are you always tired?Do you have weight in your midsection that you can’t seemto get rid of? According to Dr.James Campbell of BA Med Spa& Weight Loss Center, hormonebalance is critical to a person’soverall health and wellbeing. Many people exhibit symptomsof imbalanced hormones –

plant-derived compounds thathave the same molecular structure as those made by thehuman body. The placing ofthese bio-identical hormone pel-lets under the skin supplementsyour body’s needed hormones. In addition to alleviating symp-toms of hormonal imbalance, including mood swings, hotflashes and more, BHRT helpsreduce one’s risk for breast

depression, irritability, lack ofenergy, unexplained weight gain, lack of focus and mental clarity, restless sleep, decrease in libido– yet do not understand whythey feel the way the do.

“BA Med Spa now offersbio-identical hormone replace-ment therapy (BHRT) utilizingthe SottoPelle pellet method,”explains Dr. Campbell. “Bio-identical hormones are natural,

cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, builds bone density and leanmuscle, and allows for greaterendurance for exercise.”

Both men and women losetestosterone as they get older, which is a major cause of thesehormonal symptoms. Manywomen are surprised to learnthat hormone decline beginsabout ten years before othersymptoms of perimenopause setin; therefore, BHRT can benefitwomen as young as in their 20s.“Hormone balancing can helprestore quality of life for menand women in a wide range ofages – whether you’re 25 or 75,”says Dr. Campbell. The pelletslast four to six months and produce no side effects. The in-office procedure only takesabout five minutes and is completely pain free.

If you’re experiencing any ofthe symptoms associated withhormonal imbalance, Dr.Campbell suggests calling BAMed Spa to schedule an appoint-ment to get tested and find outwhat hormones you need. “Youdon’t have to live with thesesymptoms. Depression, moodswings, lack of energy, loweredsexual drive – these can all nega-tively affect your life a great deal. Many patients feel they have got-ten their lives back with hor-mone replacement therapy. Itcan improve your quality of lifeby leaps and bounds.”

Dr. Campbell is a certifiedpelleter. He trained with Dr.Gino Tutera, who developed andrefined the SottoPelle systemand who is a widely recognizedleader in the field of bio-identical

hormone replacement. Dr. Tutera’s unique treatmentmethod is based on prescribingthe right kind of hormone (biologically identical), in thecorrect amounts (determinedthrough testing and properanalysis of the results), using theright delivery system (pellets).“Dr. Tutera has treated over30,000 people for hormone balancing,” adds Dr. Campbell.

Pelleting is not a new phenomenon – it was first introduced in 1935. “Pelleting is currently the primary way people achieve hormone balance throughout Europe and Australia,” explains Dr. Campbell. “Bio-identical hormones are superior to synthetic hormones because they are all-natural, have anti-inflammatory properties, and do not increase your risk of breast cancer.”

Thousands of men andwomen across the United Statesand Canada have used SottoPellehormone therapy to achieve anatural healthy balance of hormones. “This procedure can change your life,” says Dr.Campbell. Call (918) 872-9999or visit BA Med Spa & Weight Loss Center for more information.

GGive Mom the Giftof Beauty

By Sheryl Sowell

Are you searching for the perfectMother’s Day gift? Flowers andjewelry are always a lovely gesture, but they can be a littleon the ordinary side. If you wantto give your mom a unique giftshe will love, or even if you wantto treat yourself this Mother’sDay, call Advanced CosmeticMedicine about the gift ofBotox. According to Dr. MallorySpoor-Baker, Botox is one of thequickest, most popular treatments for improving yourappearance and giving you amore youthful look.

“Deep lines between thebetween the eyes cause you toappear tired or angry, even whenyour face is still. By injecting tinyamounts of Botox into a specificfacial muscle, only the targetedimpulse of that muscle will beblocked, causing a local relaxation and weakness. In thisway, the muscle is immobilized, thus preventing wrinkly expres-sions. Within three days, thatarea will be flatter and smoother, and you will look more relaxed,”says Dr. Spoor-Baker. Botox

consisting of only a few tinyinjections. Dr. Spoor-Baker willdetermine exactly where toadminister these injections toachieve the best results for you.No anesthesia is required, andthe entire procedure takesapproximately 10 minutes. Thereis no downtime afterward; youmay resume normal activityimmediately. Discomfort is minimal and brief – mostpatients compare the sensationto a bug bite.

You can expect to see resultswithin days after your treatment, and the appearance of the areabetween your brows may contin-ue to improve for up to a week.“Botox is a perfect solution toimprove your appearance, as it isfast and effective, with minimaldiscomfort and no downtime,”says Dr. Spoor-Baker.

“With Botox, people willnotice that you look morerelaxed. You will even feel morerelaxed. With repeat Botox treatments in the first year, thosepesky lines can be gone,” addsDr. Spoor-Baker.

treatments last from three to sixmonths.

An area of Botox typicallyincludes frown lines, foreheadlines and crow’s feet lines.Treating your frown lines, alone, will make you look fresher andmore relaxed.

“Botox is one of our mostpopular treatments, especiallyduring the spring and summer, when everyone has so manysocial gatherings such as graduations to attend,” says Dr. Spoor-Baker.

Millions of men and womenof all skin colors and ethnicitieshave realized the benefits ofbeing treated with Botox. Results are visible, but Botoxwill not radically change yourfacial appearance or make youlook as if you’ve “had workdone.” When administered by an experienced physician such as Dr. Spoor-Baker, you can still smile, frown, and look surprised without those linesbetween your brows.

Each child is carefully evaluated and matched with astrong and stable foster familywho will integrate that child notonly into their family, but alsointo their community, schooland church.

It takes a unique person orfamily to open their hearts tothese children. Those who wereup to the challenge say it is one

of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences in theirlives, as they watch a troubledchild blossom into a loving andresponsible individual.

Lara is happy to report thatone of their most recent successstories is a set of young sisters, 6 and 8 years old, who recentlyreturned to their parents’ custody after 13 months in foster care.

CCatch Some Fun at Crawfest

By Deanna Rebro

It’s party time on May 19, whenCajun Ed’s Hebert’s SpecialtyMeats hosts its 12th annualCrawfest.

Owner Ed Richard, aLouisiana native who knows howto combine good food and agood party, invites everyone tojoin the fun at the big red houseat 2101 E. 71st St. This celebration of crawfish harvest, alongtime Louisiana tradition, features authentic Cajun foodlike no other in Tulsa.

Menu items include boiledcrawfish, crawfish etouffee, crawfish boudin, crawfishtamales, crawfish tacos, redbeans and rice, smoked sausagesandwiches, corn maque choux, shrimp kabobs and bread pud-ding. More than a ton and a halfof crawfish, shipped fromLouisiana, will be boiled, fried orsold raw during the festival.

Cajun Ed is once again happy to donate a portion of thefestival’s food and beverage proceeds to Therapetics ServiceDogs of Oklahoma. This Tulsa-based nonprofit organizationtrains dogs to serve Oklahomanswith disabilities that limit their

Hartman, executive director ofTherapetics, it costs approximately $15,000 to traineach dog for as long as two years

so it can provide eight to tenyears of service to an individual.Therapetics offers the dogs

mobility. Among many otherthings, the dogs learn to openand close doors, pull a wheel-chair, turn lights on and off, and

transfer laundry from washer todryer.

According to Susan

without charge to qualified applicants. “The number of dogsthat we can train and place everyyear is solely dependent on ourbudget,” she explains.

Therapetics, now in its twentieth year, is placing eight toten dogs per year. Last year’sgraduating class was the largestever, with 12 “graduates.” Thereare 23 currently in training.Cajun Ed’s goal is to raise$15,000 to support one dog’sentire training.

Many of the dogs will be on hand to meet and greet everyone. Kristina Kendall, aTherapetics volunteer trainer, will have Phoenix, a three-year-old breeder for the program.Phoenix will be bred in August. But another dog, Vicki, shouldhave five new yellow lab puppiesto introduce – at least by photos– at the festival.

Volunteers will also introduce three GermanShepherd puppies who will betrained specifically for service towar vets.

“We are very blessed to havea wonderful community withbusiness owners like Cajun Edwho support our work so thatour clients are not charged forthe dog they need,” says Susan.

Crawfest offers a big fat happy event that the whole family can enjoy. Rain or shine,Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s SpecialtyMeats parking lot will be coveredwith a giant tent that will encompass a Jupiter Jump, facepainting and crawfish races forthe kids. The crawfish eatingcontest is sure to draw lots of

video cameras to capture thelaughter, applause and embarrassment for some of theparticipants.

Those who cannot attendthe festival can still get crawfishto go, ready to eat or to boil athome with all the authentic mixes such as Louisiana Fish FryProducts, Swamp Dust,Zatarain’s and Ball’s CajunSeasoning. Shipments of freshcrawfish arrive from Louisianaevery Monday, Wednesday andFriday. “People can get themlive, boiled or cooked. Any waythey want them, we’ll havethem,” says Cajun Ed.

The 12th annual Crawfestgets under way at 11 a.m. andends at 7 p.m. Enjoy good food,a good time and support a goodcause. Live music, including thetoe-tapping sounds of theJambalaya Jazz Band, will leadthe way to the big red house justwest of 71st and Lewis.

On regular business days,Cajun Ed’s Hebert’s opens at 10 a.m. Lunch specials areserved Monday through Friday.Café au lait, with authenticbeignets, is featured from 10 tonoon on Saturdays, and dinner is served Monday throughSaturday.
