BBuy in Multiples By Joshua Danker-Dake

Tulsa Mothers of Multiples(TMOMs) is a non-profit support group for parents oftwins, triplets and more – andon Saturday, September 8,they’re having their big semi-annual sale, which is your chanceto get all kinds of gently-usedbaby and children’s items atgreat prices.

If you have or are expectingmultiples, TMOMs would loveto have you. “We meet once amonth to share ideas and support each other,” says DonnaEvins, a mother of twins andone of TMOMs’ vice presidents.“We offer help for people whoare pregnant with twins or whohave newborns. Whatever ayoung mom may be goingthrough, odds are that someonein the group has gone throughthe same thing.”

Evins became involved withTMOMS in just such a way. “Ilearned about Mothers ofMultiples from a friend of minewho had triplets,” she says.“When I got pregnant withtwins, I wanted to get involved. Iwanted advice from people whohad been there, and I got a lot ofgood suggestions. It was greatbecause it was the one place I

the first year was so beneficial –I wanted to give back to othernew moms.”

TMOMs does lots of otherthings as well. “We get togetheras moms, we have play dates, andwe have a couple different bigfamily get-together days – we do

could walk in where everybodyunderstood my life. It’s so greatto have that network of othermoms – having two kids at oncewith the same needs is fun andnerve-wracking, but I wouldn’ttrade it for anything. The support and help I received in

a lot of fun things,” says Evins.Breanna Grove, a mother oftwins, adds, “Often, twins ortriplets spend time in the NICU,and so we’ll try to help peoplewho are in the hospital by pro-viding meals and in other ways.”

On Saturday, September 8,TMOMs will host its semi-annual sale at Rivergate Church(1439 E. 71st St.). Between volunteering and offering itemsfor sale, over 100 TMOMs families participate.

“We have this sale twice ayear, and the moms in our groupsell items of all kinds, includingHalloween costumes, Christmasitems, toys, strollers, Pack ’nPlays, highchairs, baby

equipment, nursery bedding, home items, and, of course, baby, children’s, and adult clothing,” Evins says. “And wecheck all the items carefullybeforehand to make sure they’rein good shape.”

TMOMs is involved withthe community in many ways, and the sale is TMOMs’ biggestfundraiser of the year. “AtChristmas time, we adopt severalfamilies, including some familiesfrom outside the group. We’vedonated Gatorade to support ourfiremen. A lot of our moms areinvolved with March of Dimes, and we are partnering withEmergency Infant Services forthe sale. We try to help each other in the group, but also tohelp others,” Evins says.

The semi-annual TMOMssale is Saturday, September 8from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. atRivergate Church (formerlyOpen Bible Fellowship, 1439 E.71st St.). Admission is free.Only cash is accepted. Physicaldonations and cash forEmergency Infant Services willalso be accepted.

“We have a lot of moms selling a lot of things,” saysEvins. “Come early – the beststuff goes fast.”

SSizzlin’ September EntertainmentBy Lorrie Ward

Recently while on vacation,Rogers County native MyrtlePrather went into a store inBranson, Missouri to buy a pairof shoes for her granddaughter. At the register, the cashier askedMyrtle for her zip code, andwhen Myrtle said, “74017-Claremore,” the cashierexclaimed, “Oh, that’s where wego every year to the Bluegrass &Chili Festival!”

When Myrtle relayed thisstory to Dell Davis, president ofthe Claremore Chamber ofCommerce, Dell was not sur-prised. “People all over the coun-try identify Claremore with thisfestival,” she says, pointing outthat some of the attendees start-ing coming as children with their

$25,000 first prize. Festival atten-dees can purchase an officialtaster kit and judge for them-selves whose chili deserves thistop honor. The Bluegrass &Chili Festival also hosts plenty ofother fun events for the wholefamily, including the FestivalMarket, Open Car Show, KiddieKorral, dance exhibitions ofcountry and clog dancing, anantique tractor pull, and muchmore. Admission to the festival isfree, and onsite parking is $10per carload.

Festival hours are Thursdayand Friday from 4 p.m. to11p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and each daypromises exciting musical enter-tainment. The award-winningDailey & Vincent and countrysuperstar Marty Stuart & TheFabulous Superlatives will perform on Thursday. TheCMA, IBMA and GrammyAward winning Ricky Skaggs &Kentucky Thunder will play onFriday evening, and Saturday’slineup will include Doyle Lawson& Quicksilver, followed byRhonda Vincent & the Rage, and wrapped up by RussellMoore & IIIrd Tyme Out. Inaddition, three stages around thefestival will feature music fromregional favorites like Heartland

parents and now have grown upand are bringing their own chil-dren. “Some groups even makethis their annual family reunion,”Dell says. “We do a survey of participants every year amongstthe people who park on site andit is interesting to see where people come from – Arkansas,Missouri, Texas, Kansas, andeven as far away as Colorado andFlorida.”

This year’s event, heldSeptember 6, 7, and 8, promisesto be filled with fun as usual. One popular feature is the Mid-America Regional Chili Cook-offand Salsa Competition, duringwhich chili creators will vie towin a spot in the World Cook-off, where they could win the

Xpress, Spring Street, BenNeikirk & The Undecided Band,Common Tyme, Lauren Lee &Liberty Road, Roof Top Romeos,The Vikings, Sixx Gunn Hill,Bethany Grace & Gypsy Souland many others. For a completeentertainment listing, go towww.claremore.org.

There will be two events forbudding artists as well: The BestCountry in the City VocalistCompetition, open to any agegroup, and the Junior Showcasefor talented youth, ages 21 andyounger. For more information

on the music lineup or for applications and information onthe competition and showcase, visit www.claremore.org.

The Bluegrass & ChiliFestival has been a GreenCountry event for 33 years, andthe festival continues to growsince moving to Claremore fromTulsa in 2000. “We don’t evenrealize what we have until we gooff and hear someone else talkabout it,” says Dell, who tells ofvisiting Harrison, Arkansas andattending a Doyle Lawson &Quicksilver concert, who are reg-ular performers at the Bluegrass& Chili Festival. As she and herhusband sat waiting for the showto begin, a group of strangersnearby began talking about howthey heard this group inClaremore and expressed highpraise not only for the Bluegrass& Chili Festival, but for the townitself, bragging on Claremore’sentertainment, sites, antiquestores and museums. The grouphad no idea who they were sittingnext to, and Dell and her hus-band did not reveal themselves, but instead just sat and enjoyedhearing the admiration directedat their hometown. “My husbandjust sat next to me, nudging meand grinning,” Dell recalls with agrin of her own. “I wish I’d had arecorder!”

The 33rd annual Bluegrass & Chili Festival takes place September 6-8, 2012 at the Claremore Expo Center grounds.

When Patsy Wessel, 72, ofOilton, Oklahoma, had kneereplacement surgery with Dr. Ronald S. LaButti this pastMarch, she was coming off a prior knee surgery. The differ-ence in the two procedures, shesays, was like night and day.

“I had already had one surgery done, and it was verypainful,” Wessel says. “I didn’thave a good experience with myfirst doctor, and I didn’t feel likemy physical therapist did a verygood job either. But with Dr. LaButti, it was very different. I had a very good expe-rience with him.”

Wessel’s knee problemsdeveloped gradually, overdecades, she says. “I’m 72 yearsold, and I’m in my 34th year inmy job, where I walk and standon cement. I have four children, and where I lived had cementfloors. I’ve worked hard in mylife, you know? You just wearyour knees out.”

Wessel says the kneereplacement with Dr. LaButti

didn’t use that machine. “Hehad someone physically doing it,and they can hurt you.Sometimes I was crying by thetime they finished. But with themachine, it didn’t hurt, and itkept the knee limber. It workedso well.”

Overall, Wessel says, herexperience was exceptional.“The hospital was excellent. Dr. LaButti was excellent, andhe was very nice. I’ve already recommended Dr. LaButti to anumber of people, and I wouldrecommend him to anyone.”

was an immeasurably betterexperience than her previous sur-gery. “Yes, I had pain – it’salways painful. But for a kneereplacement, it was significantlybetter,” she says. “I had muchless pain. It was a good experience. Dr. LaButti told methat the surgery went perfectly, and I believe it. In a short time, Iwas able to get up and walk with-out so much pain because ofhow well it was done. I wasn’teven on my cane or walker morethan a week before I could walkby myself.”

A big part of Wessel’s goodexperience was her knee rehabilitation. Dr. LaButti prescribed a continuous passivemotion machine for physicaltherapy, and Wessel says itworked wonders. “Dr. LaButtisent me home with thismachine: for two hours, threetimes a day, you put your leg init, and it raises and works yourknee. It worked wonderfully, andit doesn’t hurt.”

Wessel says her first doctor

Patsy Wessel had two very different knee replacement experienceswith two surgeons.

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

There are only five “iBlock” units in theUnited States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

CGet a Leg Up on VeinsBy Sheryl Sowell

The hot summer days are winding down – you’ve beenrunning errands in shorts, wearing skirts to work, and hit-ting the pool in your swimsuit.Chances are your legs have beenon display all day, every day, andyou can’t help but notice all oftheir imperfections. For many, unsightly leg veins are a realproblem. Fall will be here beforeyou know it, and that is the per-fect season to begin treatment toget rid of those unattractive andsometimes painful leg veins.Mallory Spoor-Baker, D.O., ofAdvanced Cosmetic Medicinesuggests calling now to scheduleyour free consultation for legvein therapy this upcoming cooler season.

Generally, the best time ofyear to receive leg vein treat-ments is during the fall. You mayexperience a slight reddening orswelling of the skin after treatments (and legs can lookworse before they look better),so most people prefer to keeptheir legs covered during thistransitional period. During thecooler weather, when they arealready covered up from head totoe, is an ideal time to start treatments. In addition, Dr. Spoor-Baker instructs her

problems are a result of abnormal flow of blood throughthe veins. Any condition thatputs excessive pressure on anindividual’s legs – pregnancy, standing for long periods of

time, and obesity, to name a few– can result in varicosities.Genetics and age are also contributing factors. Due to

patients to wear compressionhosiery for two weeks, whichhelp aid in the healing process, making treatments work better.

Spider veins, also known asbroken capillaries, are thin and

appear in a cluster of red, blue orpurple veins, resembling spiderlegs. Varicose veins are thickerand deeper. Both leg vein

hormones, spider and varicoseveins are more prevalent inwomen than in men. “Heredityand occupation, as well as overallhealth status, have a lot to dowith whether people develop

these conditions,” says Dr. Spoor-Baker.

Although spider veins andvaricose veins can be

uncomfortable and sometimespainful, the main reason mostpeople decide to have them treated is cosmetic – they aresimply unpleasant to look at.

Two methods are availableto eliminate unsightly leg veins. The first method is called sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is aprocedure in which medicine isinjected into the vessels, whichmakes them shrink. The secondmethod is a laser procedure inwhich a light device uses theenergy of light to damage thevessels, causing them to shutdown. This treatment is used byplacing a hand-held unit on theskin. Most patients experience astinging sensation as the pulsesof energy are delivered throughthe hand piece. No local anesthesia or pain medicine isneeded and appointments lastone hour.

The number of treatmentsdepends upon the vessels, theirsize, and other factors. Three tofive treatments are the norm, again depending on various factors. Leg vein treatments areperformed one month apart.

To schedule a free consultation to begin leg veintherapy this fall, call AdvancedCosmetic Medicine at (918) 280-0270.

Tulsa, says that Gleam Guard is a perfectsolution for those trying to sell theirhome, as well as anyone else who simplywants to spruce up their interior in a bigway – without spending a lot of money, time or effort.

The Gleam Guard process refinisheskitchen and bath cabinets and any otherinterior woodwork without sanding, dust,or mess. “People cannot believe there isno preparation involved,” says Bill. “Theydon’t have to move a thing out of theircabinets.” Professional craftsmen willclean the cabinets, and the Gleam Guardprocess will correct peels, flakes, scratches, minor nicks and imperfections. Once theGleam Guard hard finish is applied, likemagic, the cabinets look like new.

Gleam Guard eliminates the hugemess and time of remodeling – and mostjobs take only one to two days to complete. “We refinish all interior wood-work, painted or stained, and the finishwill last for decades,” says Bill. “If youwalk into a kitchen that Gleam Guard did24 years ago when owner Tracy Boothfirst began the company, you’d beabsolutely amazed at how good it stilllooks.”

Customers receive a five-year touchup warranty, which is transferrable to new owners. “This is a

great selling point for people who are putting their home on the market,” addsBill. “When the cabinets in a home lookpristine, the value and salability of thehouse really increases.”

The reasonable cost is another greatperk. According to Bill, the sandless refinishing process of Gleam Guard costsabout a third of traditional refinishing.

FFamilies Save andEarn at JBF

By Sheryl Sowell

The economy continues to be abig topic of conversation rightnow for people of all walks oflife – everyone is trying to figureout how to pinch a few extrapennies and earn some extracash. A perfect solution formany families is buying and consigning at Just BetweenFriends, the nation’s leading children’s and maternity consignment event.

Just when the economyseems to be getting better, something else pops up, and itfinds a way to contribute toinflation and the shrinkage ofeveryone’s take-home pay. This istaking its toll on many families’budgets, especially when itcomes to purchasing for back toschool. As many parents know, buying clothes, shoes and otheritems needed for school can getexpensive.

Participating in JBF is a win-win financially for both consignors and shoppers.Consignors typically make 65 percent of sales from their merchandise, while those whoconsign and volunteer make

and maternity clothing in addi-tion to baby equipment, house-hold furniture, software, videos, toys and much more. “Moms, dads and grandparents can getquality items for their children atamazingly low prices and still beable to buy the groceries for thatmonth," Leffingwell said.

Amber Post, franchisee ofSouthwest Tulsa and Owasso, was a JBF shopper before shestarted organizing her own JBFevents. "We were young collegestudents, broke and on a tightbudget," Post said. She had a six-month-old daughter the firsttime she shopped at a JBF andeven then, she was a slave tofashion. Before, Post had to relyon her mom and grandma to buythe really cute things. "I couldonly afford to buy her the basicsand shop the clearance racks, butonce I discovered JBF, it was likea dream come true," she said.Suddenly Post could buy every-thing she wanted for her and notjeopardize her family's budget.

After shopping once, shedecided to consign and receiveda check for $75 from items she

70 percent. Consignors also havethe advantage of creating theirown prices for items no longerbeing used around the house. With better returns than mostconsignment shops can offer andfar less hassle than a garage sale, consignors are able to take alltheir items in one day andchoose to pick up or donateitems that don’t sell.

According to MarcyLeffingwell, one of the new own-ers of Just Between FriendsBroken Arrow/Bixby, the pricesand selection for shoppers isunrivaled, and they can find anentire season’s worth of items inone stop without spending a tonof cash. “This helps families notonly eat better, they live betterbecause JBF helps put someexpendable income back in thefamily budget because of thegreat savings that can be foundat a JBF sales event,” Leffingwellsaid.

Typically shoppers can save50 to 90 percent off clothes andequipment, compared to retailprices. Items available includegently-used children’s, junior’s

sold, and she was hooked. It wasso easy to do, and a sales eventhas so much to offer in terms ofclothes, shoes, toys, books andmore for the upcoming season.

Daven Tackett, owner ofJust Between Friends Tulsa andco-founder of JBF, is mostpleased that the sale is a dignified way for a parent to buychildren's clothes at great savings. Moms and dads can feelgood about letting their childrenwear and play with the itemspurchased.

"My mother was divorcedand disabled, trying to raisethree girls on a fixed income. She did many creative things tomake ends meet, including buy-ing some of our clothes fromresale and going to garage sales,"Tackett said. "As kids, we didn'tknow there was any other way tobuy clothes. We were just always

excited and happy about gettingsomething new to wear."

Families across the nationare realizing shoppingresale/consignment makes sense.Just Between Friends has twoarea sales coming up.
