What do you value as a teacher of early literacy?

Comprehension is essential in literacy and is what I value the most when teaching.Without students connecting meaning to words, words become disposable. Words can

only form meaning when connections are made and are relatable to the students learning

and assists students literacy development. Connections must be made for students tograsp the particular concept that is being taught. Without connections students lose sightof the overall objective and become less engaged. When students comprehend the

material or reading concept applying and utilizing it when necessary becomes automatic.

Comprehension is essential to build literacy; it helps students understand text and workon their critical thinking skills.

Formative assessment plays a major role in supporting childrens literacy development.

Assessments help determine the strengths and weaknesses of a student. Targeting their

strengths and weaknesses are essential to conduct or modify lessons to addressweaknesses and build off of the students strengths. Assessments are used to record the

progress of a student and determine at what reading level he or she stands. Determining

the reading level can assist literacy development because it helps the teacher place a

student in his or her zone or proximity. Teachers can assign the appropriate readingmaterial that will enhance their reading skills. Assigning the appreciate assignments

How does the to-with-by model of instruction support childrens early literacy

    development?

The to-with-by model of instruction supports students early literacy development

because it is a successful approach that allows the learning responsibility to gradually bereleased from the teacher and placed in the hands of the students. This form of

instruction allows the classroom instruction to gradually move away from being teacher-

centered instruction to student-centered instruction. The teacher teaches the lesson and

provides the students with an activity that will be conducted together as a class. Theactivity puts the material being taught into practice. Collaborating will allow the students

to ask questions or clarify and doubts they may have regarding the content. The teacher

models what is expected of the students and sets goals for students to meet. During this

process, teacher works with students and prompts them while the student activelyengages in the activity. After being provided with an example student are handed the

responsibility of applying the newly learned reading strategy in a situation. Students at

this point are working individually to determine whether they meet the objectives orneeds additional guidance from the teacher. The to-with-by instruction is an approach

can be used to build literacy development by teaching the reading concept then allowing

the students to apply the concept on their own without minimum guidance from the

teacher. Handing the reasonability onto the students allows the student to apply conceptson their own and can learn to automatically utilize it when necessary.

How do the CCSS inform your work with children? The CCSS help shape my lessons plans. Without the CCSS I would not have a clearobjective and would not be able to conduct the approximate lessons that will set the

students up to succeed and meet the standards. The CCSS are very clear and very

precise. When the No Child Left Behind Act and required teachers to write the standardson the board but students never had any meaning behind them, they were simply words.

How do professional collaborations help support childrens learning?

Collaborating with other professionals is essential to childrens learning. Discussing

lessons and appropriate models or forms of instruction that will benefit and target thestudents needs, will not only benefit the teacher but also indirectly impact the students.

Teachers have to constantly modify their teaching strategies to help children learn,

therefore collaborating with other professionals, teachers can get an insight of how

different teaching approaches can affect the students and what precautions are essential totake into consideration. A student who is in dire need of additional assistance can benefit

from several teachers working on addressing the needs of the student. Different plans

and instructions can be found to meet the students needs. Each student is differenttherefore have different needs and when another teacher has worked with students that

struggle on the same material, they can provide guidance and assistance.

The collaboration of professionals is essential to assist the learning of a student

who is in my co-operating teachers classroom. This student is a male that struggles withreading and is pulled out of the classroom. He is in third grade but is reading at a first

grade level, with the collaboration of his general education teacher and his reading

teacher, they are able to plan and modify instruction that will help meet the studentsneeds therefore can facilitate learning.
