Dear Fellow Arabian Horse Enthusiasts
The Santa Ynez Valley Arabian Horse Associa-tion is proud to be celebrating its 40th year! In April 1975, the SYVAHA was formed to “encourage, aid and conduct exhibitions andshows for the purpose of promoting the Arabianhorse.” Nine breeders with vision and commitmentjoined together to incept our organization. Thanksto their dedication, forty years later the Santa Ynez
Valley is globally recognized as “the Valley of the Arabian Horse” andis home to many of the finest and most sought after Arabian horsesin the world. From the nine original members we are now 100 strong and
growing. Our members compete and excel in a wide variety of disciplines; western, english, hunter, endurance, reining, halter, driving, sport horse and more. Whether in the show arena or on the trails, our Arabian horses do it all and they sure do it well! Our club is proud to sponsor many activities, several of which are unique to the Santa Ynez Valley. They include The Arabian Foal Festival, Santa Ynez Gelding Futurity, Arabian Breeders Celebration, Competitive Trail Ride, Arabian Breeders Challenge and more throughout the year.
A special Thank You to our wonderful Santa Ynez Valley ArabianHorse Association members as well as commercial advertisers fortheir loyal support and for making this Ranch Directory possible. In particular, I would like to thank our amazing editor, Nancy EklundHunsicker for all of her hard work in bringing this Directory to life.
Please join us at one of our many events or stop by and visit thebeautiful Arabian Horse farms in our gorgeous Santa Ynez Valley.

I would like to thank all who workedto bring our Ranch Directory together
this year, especially Kim Shackelford,
Katie Russell, Kelly Elm, Michelle
Kelly and Janina Merz who tirelessly
canvassed our club and community
for advertisers.
A particular note of thanks is due
to our Art Director Cherie Virden at
Purebred Associates who stepped up
to the plate several years ago to help
usreinstitute and reinvigorate this
annual publication. I would never
have been able to pull this project out of the hat without her, that
year and every year since.
We could not create a beautiful publication without great
photos, so a huge thank you to Silver Maple Farm, Al Jassimya,
Om El Arab, Emma Maxwell, Michelle Kelly, Darryl Larsen,
Kimerlee Curyl, Jennifer Ogden and Kelly Campbell for generously
allowing us access to their photo libraries.
Lastly to our renewing as well as new advertisers - your
support is appreciated! The 2015 Santa Ynez Valley Arabian
Ranch Directory will be widely circulated in our Valley
throughout the coming year, and distributed at major national
as well as international Arabian events, including Scottsdale,
Las Vegas, Regional Shows and the Nationals.

More than any other place in the world, Santa Ynez
Valley conjures a particular magic with respect to the
Arabian horse. Somehow, this enchanted valley and
legendary horse seem fated to be partnered. Perhaps
it is because fine wine, elegant horses and staggeringly
beautiful landscape vistas just naturally go together?
Whatever the cause, Santa Ynez Valley’s long and
historical connection to the Arabian horse makes the
Valley an irresistible draw for Arabian horse enthusiasts
all over the world. No Arabian horse fancier’s trip to
the western United States is complete without a few
days spent in Santa Ynez. The added attractions of
friendly coastal valley California weather, along with
exceptional dining, wine tasting and accommodation
options merely add to the appeal.

The Santa Ynez Gelding Futurity Online Auction, scheduled for
May 19th, represents an unequaled opportunity to acquire a top
quality purebred Arabian yearling gelding, and launch 3 years of
participation in the most innovative and best paying Futurity in the
country. Each gelding purchased in the Auction - and only those
geldings purchased in the auction - will have the right to compete
and win substantial prize money for the next 3 years in the Santa
Ynez Gelding Futurity, which is held in conjunction with the Santa
Ynez Arabian Foal Festival each Autumn. As yearlings the geldings
are judged on their conformation while shown in hand by their
amateur handlers. As two year olds they step up to an in-hand trail
class, and as 3 year olds they graduate to being shown under saddle,
with the chance to win prize money each year they compete.

The Arabian Foal Festival is held each autumn at the beautiful
Santa Ynez Valley Equestrian Center. The stunning backdrop of
mountains and vineyards provides the perfect setting for the “most
diverse foal classes in the world.” Competition classes are divided
by age as well as future potential use - show or performance - and
also include Trail In Hand as well as Get of Sire and Produce of
Dam. Again, all horses must be exhibited by amateurs, which
contributes to the fun and casual atmosphere. This show provides
the perfect venue as a first time show experience for the young
horses as well as their handler/owners. It is designed to be festive as
well as educational and transparent; the judges often explain to the
audience and competitors their reasons for their class placements.
Nominated by the readers of Arabian Horse Times as their
“favorite horse event of the year,” the Arabian Foal Festival
represents a completely new concept of showing Arabian horses.

It is an event with both local as well as international flavor. It is
local, in that the competing young horses are all bred and born in
the Santa Ynez area, and the amateur handlers are all members of
the Santa Ynez Valley Arabian club. However, the bloodlines behind
all these foals represent an incredibly diverse collection of the
highest quality sire and dam lines from every corner of the globe,
and spectators fly in from many international destinations to attend
the show. Adding to the fun is the Saturday afternoon stallion
presentation, followed by a festive evening soiree, held in the beau-
tiful party barn at the show venue. Each year the Show Committee
chooses a long term local breeder of historical significance to
celebrate; this year’s honorees were Rose & Dorothy Mari,
daughters of the famous Frisco Mari who bred the legendary
Amerigo, sire of Khemosabi. In addition, Bart Van Buggenhout,

manager of Al Jassimya Farm - and the source of enormous energy
and creativity - introduced the brand new Santa Ynez Valley
Breeders Challenge, a program designed to mix up the breeding
scene in the Valley and allow all participants the chance to try their
hand at fresh new breeding ideas. Each of 12 Santa Ynez breeders
put the name of one of their own breeding stallions in the basket
on Saturday night and each of those 12 breeders drew one name
back out. Anyone who drew their own stallion’s name out of the hat
had to put it back. By December 31st, 2015, each of these breeders
must nominate one of their own mares to breed to the stallion
whose name they pulled out the hat. The resulting foal will be
shown at the 2016 Foal Festival Show and the winning foal wins the
Breeders Challenge Perpetual Trophy. Furthermore, everyone can
participate in the fun, as all those breeding decisions will be listed
on the SYVAHA website. Anyone who wishes may take part in a
Calcutta on whichever breeding combination/foal they think is
going to win. Calcutta entries close before the foals are born, so
each person taking part is relying on their bloodline knowledge
and predictive powers! The prize money will be divided between
the winning foal breeder and those participants who correctly
predicted the winner. The fun factor is clearly enhanced by the
diversity of the breeding programs in Santa Ynez, and literally
challenges the local breeders to “think outside of the box” of their
own farm bloodlines. Beyond the significant entertainment
potential of this event, the goal of theBreeders Challenge is to
encourage everyone in Santa Ynez to visit with and learn about
their neighbor’s type of Arabian horses, many of which are very
different from their own, and in general promote good fun and

For a change of pace, the Santa Ynez Competitive Trail Ride
takes place October 21st-November 1st at a beautiful private ranch.
It’s a timed competition ridden on a natural trail course and
includes three different divisions, each with a specific speed or pace
and allotted completion time. Horses & riders are judged on their
ability to work as a team as well as on the physical condition of
the horse. All obstacles used for judging must be natural and not
created. This sport is a great way to build a partnership between
horse and rider through training and conditioning; it also encour-
ages riders to continually advance their skills and horsemanship.
