From the Editor

Well,aftera3-weekhiatus,Iamback in town, Ah, you heat, humid heat of the bay, howI missed you! No more dry

air parching my skin and making me rubmoisturizerallovertoavoidthatstretched, unlikablesensation!

From time to time, it is good to stepbackfromwhatonetakesforgrantedandappreciateeverythingthatcomestolivingor visiting Banderas Bay. One of the firstthings I did was to go gaze at the sunsetfrom the beach in front of the GrandVenetian condos. You know, the beachlocalscall“LaPlayadelHoli”.

By the way, do you know where thatnamecomesfrom?Itturnsoutthatyearsago the only building on that beach wastheHolidayInnHotel(whichthenwasalsothe tallest building in town), way beforethe boom of condo construction in theearly2010’s.Well,thebeachwascalled“LaPlaya del Holi(day Inn)”, with Holi havingtheEnglishpronunciation.

IamwritingthisletteracoupleofdaysafterInternationalWomen’sDay.ThisyeartherewasahugemarchinMexicoCitytoprotest against the wave of feminicidesthathasbeenhappeninglately.Accordingto some sources, over 100,000 womenmarched along the main avenues. InGuadalajara, our state capital, there wasa march too, as well as in Puerto Vallarta, withmuchmoremodestnumbers.

Security-wise, Vallarta and RivieraNayarit are safer that most of the cities inthe country, another advantage our areahas. Of course, common sense and basicsafety rules must be applied at all times(oh, a sentence in passive voice!). Do notweartooflashyjewelry, donotwalkaloneafter certain hours at night, avoid neigh-borhoods known to be problematic... theusual stuff we would do back at homeapplyhereaswell.

Well, another week hasgone by, thank you for thesupport you have shown tothe Paper, see you aroundtown!

Getting Grounded in Chaotic Times

Thursday,March19thistheSpringEquinox. This happens at thesame moment for everyonethough at different local times.

Dayandnightarenearlyequal.Itisinter-pretedasatimeofstrugglebetweenlightand darkness. It represents a fresh startandaremindertogetyourselfinbalance.

I have lately been feeling challenged, bothphysicallyandemotionally.

Lower energy effects decisions andconfidence.Iaskedmyselfforananswer.Overwhelmed was the conclusion.Missingafewdaysofmeditation, andtoomuch scanning world event headlinestriggeredthismalaise.

The events unfolding today includeflu panic, trade wars, climate change, political divisiveness, robotics replacingworkers, drug dependencies, geneti-cally modified food crops, immigrationpolicies, hidden costs of living, overcrowded schools and underpaidpolice, fire and social service profes-sionals. The list is longer, and everyfamily has their own critical personalconcerns.

Maintaining a healthy body andpositive mental attitude in the face of aseemingly chaotic world is challenging.Last week’s column focused on beingempathictoglobalevents, butnotbeingenergetically and emotionally drawnintothem.Understandwhatyoucannotfix and don’t let it affect you. There areno“goodolddays”aswehaveoftensaid.LivinginthepresentisourAchillesheeltomaster.

Tools to better cope and respond tosituations more calmly could replaceour over medicated societies. I wasdetermined to find and apply somesimple techniques to stabilize myself.Thereisoceanandmountainbeautyallaround me in Vallarta. I wanted to clearawaysomeofthedailymentaldebristoexperiencemorejoyandgetgrounded.

Wecan’tjustleaptojoy…thereisapathwe need to choose to move forward. Ithoughtoftheexplorerclippershipsandtheir old fashioned large steering wheelwith its spokes. If they were not firmlyheldtogetherandreinforceditwouldfallapartandweaken…jeopardizingthegreatbodyitcontrols.MaybeIwasspreadtoothinandneededtoallocateasettimeto

reflect and rest. The proverb “silence isgolden” goes back thousands of years.Seemed like a much better investmentthantryingtooutguessfinancialmarkets, interestratesandcurrencyvalues.

I came across the phrase “innerrevolution” and loved it. With so manypeople around us feeling anxious andnegative, I find it is best to politely notreact to their problems and fears… justexitgentlyfromthescene.Selectpeoplewhom you want to associate with. Likeattractslike. So,IfI’mupandhappy, that’swhom I will attract. I took pen to paperand listed some ways I will support my“innerrevolution”:

Meditation: Started with 5 minutes adayandworkedupfromthere.

Begin the Day With a Clear Intention:Sayingoutloud:Thisisagreatday.Iwishforaheavenlydayformyself(orus),andeveryoneI(we),comeincontactwith.Begenerous,streetentertainersneedtoeattoo.

Sleep and Rest: Listen to your body.Eight hours sleep is average, and useafternoon meditation time to rest thebodyandmind.

BeSelfish:Havethatmassage, haircut, new garment you feel great in, go to themovies,andchangearoutinehave-to-dothat can wait another day. I buy a smallluxury…feelsgreatatmodestcost.

Food Choices: We are what we putinto our bodies. I cut out as much sugar, salt, fried foods, alcohol, dairy and lowvalue carbs as possible. A diet is not theanswer. I try to balance my intake withmore veggies, fruits, nut and beans, lean meats, seafood, sauerkraut andapple cider vinegar. Enjoy a treat eachweek. Total abstinence is not a goodpractice. Include 15 minutes of sun withsunscreen.

Exercise: I made walking my dailypractice, asthat’swhatworksforme.

We are all different, so my list is notyour list. Time is what we all have incommon. How we use it is a personalchoice. There is always time. I acceptedthat everything I did, thought andrelated to would be enhanced when Itookbettercareofmyself.Iwashappier,moreenergetic,creative,andmyjoywasobvioustomypartnerandclosefriends.Enjoy being on the journey, not anxiousforthedestination.

Play: Lastly, but very important asadults. This activity, whatever activityyou chose, enhances imagination, cognitive and emotional strengthand physical dexterity. When we arepassionate and focused, it is a form ofmeditation. Three years ago, I spent aboring, gray, rainy afternoon filling in achild’s pirate ship coloring book withcrayons. That playful experience led totoday. Now, my original geometric artdesignsgracepeople’swallsandartwear.

I am most inspired by speaker andauthor, Esther Hicks. She was in the2006 film, The Secret. Here, in closing, are her words: Ask and It is Given, Trust& Let Things Happen, No Accident isAccidental, Let The Magic Happenand Our Thoughts and Emotions ArePowerful.

The engine moving our lives (and our hearts)

Last week we talked about therelationship trees have with birdswith us humans, and invited youtoconnectwiththetreesthatgive

us so much without asking for anythingin return. This was an excuse to dedicatethese lines to honor the home of thesewonderfulbeings:Theforestsandjunglesso varied we have in the Banderas Bayregion. Why not introduce ourselves alittlemoretotheheartoflifeitselfinwhichmillions of beings of all kinds are unitedbyaninfinitenumberofinvisibleconnec-tions?

When I first came to Puerto Vallarta inthe middle of summer, the greenery ofits landscapes, its lush jungles and greenforests not only took away my breath butalso stole my heart. I fell in love with theregionandnevergottiredofgettingintoitscountlesspathswhichgotlostinthedensevegetation. Listening to a huge amount ofsounds, from insects to birds, observingthevarietyofshapesandcolorsofleaves, flowers and seeds, and feeling that lifeis everywhere is undoubtedly a source

of energy capable of filling our bodiesalmost immediately. They call it “VitaminN” (as in Nature), although I confess that Ipersonallyhaveaddictionto“ComplexT”(asinTree).

For numerous ancestral cultures suchastheMesoamerican, thetreeservedasacommunicating link or path between thegodswiththeearthplane.Itwassomethinglikeathresholdlinkingthedivineandtheearthly: while the tree trunk representedthe inhabitants of the earth, its branchesrose to the sky and its roots sank into theground, connecting everything. With thepass of time and our growing separationfrom nature, humanity has forgottenthosewonderfulbeliefsandtraditions.Butinterestingly, while science rejects every-thing that cannot be demonstrated, it hasdiscovered that this fantastic metaphor istruly represented in the trees that inhabittheforestsoftheplanet.Thetreesarenotonly anchored there, but they are socialbeings and are connected with eachother through their roots (functioning asamoderninternetnetworkinwhichthey

exchange information and nutrients)and also communicate with other livingbeings through inaudible micro soundsandsubtlechemicalmessagestheirleavesreleaseintotheair.

What will the majestic Ficus cotini-foliatalkaboutwiththeorchidsthathavesettled in its high branches? Have theythankedthatgreatpalmtreethatallowedthemtogrowonit?Andwhatwilltheytellthe tiny wasps which fertilize their tinyencapsulatedflowersandthenfeedbirds, bats and coatis? I can’t help wonderinghowmanybeingsdependonthetreesthatmake up our majestic jungles and forests.Iftheinvisibleconnectionsbetweeneachanimal, each fungus and each vegetablebecame visible even if they were as thinas a spider’s web, we simply could notwalk and get caught just entering the firstmeters of the jungle, just as I was trappedby its beauty that first time. What if wespreadthatwebtohumans, toallhumanswho somehow depend on these forestsandforests?Whatatangle!

Nature is amazing, capable ofmaintaining and renewing very quicklydespite us. During 2019 and so far thisyear, the rains have been very generouswith the region, keeping the greenery ofour mountains practically all year. It hasbeen a great opportunity for small trees, climbing plants and shrubs to recovervigor and recover the ground they havelostinrecentdecades.Theyaretheenginethatmovesourlives!

Why not try to keep this up? Whatwould happen to us if those beautifulmountains surrounding the Bay werecovered only with pastures, cattle andfarming areas? What a tragedy! Not onlywould that charm that everyone fallsin love with be lost, but that network ofconnections would erode with the firstrains of summer and be dragged into theBay, covering our beautiful coasts, rockyreefs and seabed with all those cobwebsalready unusable “How dramatic,” youwill think ... But although it is a metaphor,it could happen. The problem is that thedegradationofourecosystemsissosubtlethat sometimes we are not aware of howfastitadvances.

Sometimes it is good and healthy toremember how important and valuableit is for the entire region to conserve ournaturalresources.Afterall, tourism, whichis what the region depends on, comesprecisely because of the natural wondersthat we still have. Our diversity of birds,of which I like so much to boast, ourmuch-neededfruitandinsectivorousbats,our endemic plants, our Marabunta ants,ourjaguars...OurtoursthroughtheSierraMadre, our beloved El Salado Estuary, our exciting jumps in zip line, our toursto observe the booby birds, cormorantsandourbelovedpelicansthatnestinLosArcos...Everything,absolutelyeverythingneeds the mountains of Puerto Vallartaand Banderas Bay to be preserved andprotected, notonlyonpaperbutinthedaytoday.

ButitisnotenoughthatyouorIbeawareofthebeautyandvalueofourmountains. Those who have legal authority anddominionoverthemshouldputasidetheeconomic and ephemeral value of theiruse to better enter the mountains, walkamong the trees and connect with them:“Think about the future,” the trees wouldtellthemwhiletheygivethemsomeshadeand serenity. With a little luck we will allreconnectwithnatureandourforestsandforestswillcontinuetogiveuslife.Thankstrees!

Get to know more about the SPCA

One of my 2020 resolutions, asmanyofyou, wastobehealthier. In my case, I decided I wantedto add something else to my

life, because I knew that having a healthylifestyledoingyoga, workingouteverydayand eating cleaner may disappear after aweek, so I decided to volunteer with mytime and after checking the flexibility ofmyagenda,

I chose SPCA Puerto Vallarta,. If youask me what can be done there, I wouldsaythatalot;butifyouarehereinPuertoVallarta, living all year round or part-timeandyouhaveacar,youcandosometrans-portation for the people that book toursto the SPCA Center every Tuesday orThursday. Those tours normally go from10:45AMto1:30PM.

I was talking with Tina Kunkel and shementioned to me that “SPCA de PV wasfoundedinPuertoVallarta,JaliscoMexico,in 2007 by a long-term resident origi-nallyfromCalifornia,JaniceChatterton. Itstartedwithasmallrentedpropertyfor20dogsatPasoAncho.

We are not supported by the gover-nment, corporations, foundations orbusinesses. We fully function on privatedonations.”

Also, if you didn’t know The SPCAcurrently only afford to care for up to 45dogsatatime,theshelterhasthecapacityforupto130dogs.

Cash donations (not tax-deductible)are accepted at our Olas Altas FarmersMarket boot every Saturday and at HotelHaciendaSanAngel.”

In addition to that, Tina said “Animalsare often found living on the streets afterbeingdiscardedand/orextremelyabused.We devote ourselves to their physicaland emotional rehabilitation and inviteeveryone to come and interact with theanimals at our shelter on our weeklyescortedtours.

What is Intuition?

What is Intuition? Intuitionis known as a person’scapacity to obtain orhave direct knowledge

or immediate insight, without outsideobservation or regular mental reason. It’s that “gut feeling” you get. People oftenplace an enormous amount of faith ontheir intuition and making decisions thatseem to go against all available evidence.

You may also want to think of it thisway: when you are asked what intuitionis, you already and automatically knowwhatitis;animmediateunderstandingorknowing something without reasoning.Intuitive thinking is basically the kindof thinking that helps you understandreality in the moment, without logic oranalysis. There›s no language involvedin it either; meaning no words. So, really,it would be more of Intuitive feeling or sensing and not mentally figuring it outin the rational mind by ‘thinking’. It’sentirely about signs and sensations. One simply knows. The words comein next to comprehend the Feeling.

It can be challenging to say just what intuition is. Famous scientists such asAlbert Einstein, top leaders and folkssuch as Oprah Winfrey and Steve Jobs,(who said Intuition was “more powerfulthan intellect”) have stated that theirsuccesshadalottodowithfollowingtheirintuition. The “knowing” of intuition andtheideaalonethatpeoplecanmakeverysuccessfulchoiceswithoutinvestingtimein their analytical thought process hasdeeplyintriguedmanyscientists,philoso-phers and everyone in-between. Spend Time Alone: By taking timeto spend alone without your phoneor computer (basically, without muchoutside focus) will allow you to connectwith your intuition and your innerwisdom. Sitting alone on the beach is aperfect way to expand your awareness. Our minds can quiet and creativity cancome in the way of new senses andideas or pictures without interruption.

Practicing Mindfulness: Whenone practices mindfulness andfocuses our attention in the presentmoment, it is much easier to listen toour intuition, connect with situationsand interact with the environment.

Connect with your Inner Wisdom By connecting with our intuition we caneasily feel the wisdom which assists usto thrive in all aspects of our lives. Somepeople connect intuition with beingpsychic or ‘woo-woo’. However, as peoplethat already know and use their intuitionwill tell you and what new research nowshows, with our instincts and intuition, such as a “gut instinct” can assist inguiding us to more rapid and accuratedecisions and a lead to a happier life.

Scientists Galang Lifityanto, ChrisDonkin and Joel Pearson publishedin Psychological Science, Measuring Intuition: Nonconscious Emotional Information Boosts Accuracy and Confidence, introduces a technique inwhich subliminal emotional informationis presented to subjects while they makefully conscious sensory decisions. “Ourbehavioral and physiological data, alongwithevidence-accumulatormodels,showthatnonconsciousemotionalinformationcan boost accuracy and confidence in aconcurrent emotion-free decision task, while also speeding up response times.”
