Flight Test #1
• July 29, 2004 Flight Test at Technical Center– Convair N49 aircraft to a flight level of just below
14,000 feet• Radial from GBT to about 140 nmiles and return• Finished with circular patterns within 10 miles of GBT to test
Micro EARTS (MEARTS) ADS-B Message Processing of Flight ID changes and airborne alert/status reporting
– Sensis GBT connected to Capstone Communications and Control System (CCCS) and MicroEARTS
– N49 aircraft with installed TSO’d Garmin AT GDL90 UAT avionics
– ADS-B messages received through the GBT recorded and analyzed
Flight Test #1 Systems
• Technical Center Project Aircraft– N49 Convair with UAT TSO’d avionics
• Garmin GDL90 connected to operate as A1H independent of other aircraft avionics
– Connected and operated with top and bottom antenna– MX020 Display connected to UAT– Altitude data provided by aircraft – GPS receiver self contained in Garmin avionics– Operation controlled by project personnel independent of pilots
• GBT• Sensis Pre-Production installed at the Technical Center
– Sited with antenna on Mock Tower Cab on Main Building with CAPSTONE Phase 1 antenna
– Connected to CCCS using serial interface at 19.2 Kb– Test Tool recorder connected at GBT output to record and monitor data
Flight Test #1 Systems - 2
• CCCS– Capstone Communications Controller part of Ground
Systems required to interface to ATC• Routes ADS-B Messages to MEARTS• Receives FIS-B from Weather Sources and forwards data to
GBT for Uplink• Receives TIS-B Messages and transmits data to GBT for
Uplink
• MEARTS– CAPSTONE baseline Version 0402.0, site TCH08

• Messages from the GBT at the Ground Interface (Asynch 19.2 Kb serial data)– Asterix 23 Status Messages
• GBT GPS Report• Alert/Alarm Status• Test Message
– Asterix 33 ADS-B Messages• Message fields incorporated into a Message based
on received RF Message Content
Flight Test #1 Recordings – 2
• Ashtech GPS Recordings– Establishes true position to compare UAT
GPS reported position
• MEARTS Recordings– Continuous Data Recording (CDR)– ADS-B Interface Recording off the CCCS
Flight Test #1 Results
• Validated end to end UAT ADS-B Message Air To Ground Reception– Validated proper encoding/decoding of UAT Message
Fields• UAT avionics transmissions of a A1H Class as defined by
RTCA DO-282A– TYPE 0 Payload
» Basic Message – State Vector– TYPE 1 Payload
» Long Message – State Vector, Mode Status, Auxiliary State Vector
– TYPE 2 Payload» Long Message – State Vector, Auxiliary State Vector
