Moped operators have more crashes than other motor vehicle operators. Mopeds are involved in 30 to 40 injury producing accidents per year in the campus area.

All moped owners/operators should follow safe practices and have insurance to cover their liability should they cause injury to persons or property.

Always wear a helmet.

Use eye wear, such as goggles, glasses, or a motorcycle helmet with a visor.

Headlights should be on at all times.

Avoid operating a moped during adverse or winter weather conditions.

Never drive while texting or with a passenger.

General Safety

Permit Rates and Fees

Moped parking permits may be purchased online at transportation.wisc.edu

One parking permit will be issued per moped assignment. One permit per vehicle.

Annual Moped Permit: $139Valid Sept. 1, 2018 - Aug. 31, 2019

Moped parking permits must be visible from the front of the vehicle. Remove any old permits before adhering the new one.

Moped parking permits may not be transferred or sold.

Refunds will not be issued for lost/stolen moped parking permits. A replacement permit may be purchased at the pro-rated replacement cost.

All citations and other unpaid fees must be paid to UW Transportation Services prior to purchasing a permit.

No Parking citation: $40 - $50No Permit citation: $40Towing: $100

Citations issued to illegally parked mopeds are the responsibility of the registered owner of the vehicle.

Enforcement of non-residence hall permit lots is 7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; residence hall lots are enforced 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“All access” lots are open and available to any valid moped permit 7 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

All moped lots are open and available to mopeds after 4:30 p.m. (residence hall lots after 11 p.m.), Monday through Friday and all day on Saturdays and Sundays.

Lot Types and Enforcement

Permit Purchase Restriction

University residence hall contract holders will be restricted to selecting moped lots adjacent to their address of record. The restricted residence hall moped lots are not available to buyers not holding a residence hall contract.

City of Madison Moped Ordinance

As of Jan. 1, 2018, the City of Madison does not allow mopeds to park on sidewalks, terraces, or at/near bicycle racks. Please see the city’s Parking Utility site for full details: cityofmadison.com/parking-utility

Rules of the Road

All mopeds must be operated in accordance with local, state, federal and UW-Madison campus regulations. Improperly operated or non-permitted mopeds may be cited by designated authorities. Mopeds are motor vehicles and operators are expected to follow all Wisconsin uniform traffic laws.

Mopeds must be registered to the current owner, display a valid license plate, and clearly display a valid UW-Madison parking permit to park on campus.

Moped permits are valid only in the assigned moped lot or in lots signed as “all access.” If the assigned moped lot is full, the permit holder should notify Transportation Services and park in the nearest “all access” moped lot.

Mopeds may not be operated on sidewalks, disabled access aisles, bike paths or other restricted areas.

Mopeds may not park at or near bicycle racks or bicycle parking areas on the UW Campus.

Mopeds are prohibited in gated sections of visitor parking garages and ramps.

Mopeds may not be locked to or parked at utility poles, trees, bollards, railings, sign posts, or fences.

Mopeds may not be stored (parked for more than 72 hours) without authorization from Transportation Services, except at moped parking areas assigned to, and located next to university residence halls.

Mopeds are not allowed in any classroom, lab, office, residence hall, or building.

Improperly parked, abandoned, or fluid-leaking mopeds are subject to citing, towing, and/or impounding.

Transportation Services has the authority to close a lot for construction, maintenance, or safety issues. Permit holders will be notified in advance of lot closures and relocations.

Moped operators are expected to demonstrate responsibility in their driving habits to ensure the safety of both moped operators and the campus community as a whole.

Operating a Moped on Campus

A maximum of one (1) moped may be parked in a pay-by-cell (”mobile meter”) parking space designed for automobiles.

Mopeds may not be operated in a bike lane.

Moped operators must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.

Mopeds must have all factory-installed equipment (headlights, signal lights, mirrors, etc.) in working order.

No passengers may ride on a vehicle registered as a moped.

Moped operators must follow all traffic signs and signals.
