Brief: The client was interested in cre-ating an external space in the means of a roof terrace to the existing building within a con-servation area.

Solution: The proposed scheme is to alter the rear of the building by creating a roof terrace allowing the client to stand behind and look over the ridge of the roof.

Brief: To design a link between an ex-isting to a proposed extension without compromising any fea-tures of the original cottage.

Solution: The client was interested in in-creasing the size of their living accommodation by converting the existing out building. As the building is listed no new internal opening were allowed within the original cottage. The only wayway of creating an internal access was to design a link be-tween the existing extension to the proposed. By taking a con-temporary approach with a glass link a contrast between the new and the existing, the historic fabric of the house would not be compromised.

Site Concept

Brief: The aim for this project was to create a new entrance exten-sion to an existing home with new vehicle access.

Solution: The proposed involves con-structing a new driveway which would be accessed from Ben-nett Road, at the top end of the property. The design of the driveway is wide to allow easier and safer manoeuvrability on the driveway and improve access onto the main road. The proposal also includes an en-trance extension to the main house. The extension has been designed to fit in a tight space and made small in size to be more sympathetic to the exist-ing house and the surrounding landscape.

Brief: To refurbish the existing toilet block in Dartmouth’s listed Market Square.

Solution: TheThe existing Market Square toilet block is currently located to the rear of the square and is open to the public from the car park. The toilets are currently dark, rundown, regularly van-dalised and offer no disabled facilities.facilities. The proposed altera-tions include a full refurbish-ment of the existing Market Square toilet. The existing toilet entrance would be relocated al-lowing the toilets to be ac-cessed from inside the square. The new layout would include a disabled toilet as well as new male, female and staff facilities.

Brief: The client was interested in cre-ating extra living accommoda-tion to their property, located in a Conservation Area.

Solution: The alterations to Britannia House, Dartmouth, are de-signed to make the most of the internal living spaces whilst having minimal impact on the appearance and character of the house. This scheme is sym-pathetic to the surrounding area and to the neighbouring houses to the rear of the prop-erty. By raising the roof 1000mm, the proportions of the house will become balanced, therefore the alterations would enhance appearance of the ex-isting building and its surround-ings.

ShadowsPrivacy

For the ‘tight fit lose fit’ project, my concept was to design a building that gave the feeling of openness whilst still providing privacy. My main inspiration de-rived from an image captured on site. I wanted to incorporate aa large glazed atrium space with a timber screens, allowing light to pass through to create delicate shadows across the walls and floors.

For the ‘my architecture’ project, I was inspired by the history of the site. My concept was to design a house that re-flected the history of Devil’s Point. Historically the site had been used to house canons as partpart of Plymouth’s defence system. Therefore I was drawn to the similarities between the function of a fort and what a family home meant to me. A fort is designed to protect a place, as is a home is designed to pro-tect us from the elements and threats.

My designed reflects the char-acteristics of a fort from the ex-terior. The large continuous timber wall symbolises a wall between private and public. It also symbolises protection against any threats, whilst on the other side of this timber wall, the house is light and open with very little boundaries between the internal and exter-nal spaces.

For the ‘integrated’ project my concept was inspired by Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland and the landscape of the site. The idea of a secret tranquil space, hidden away on Mount Edgcumbe drove me to design openopen minimal platforms. With a timber and glass envelope the boundaries which defy the in-ternal and external spaces are kept to a minimum, framing a panoramic view.
