TRADITION OF VALENTINE'S DAY

In Brazil we celebrate Valentine's Day on June 12. But in much of the world (such as USA, Italy and Canada), the date chosen is February 14, Valentine's Day (Saint Valentine, for some, or Valentine's day the Americans), a saint devoted to the idea of love.  In fact, there are two saints "Valentino". One was a priest, saint and martyr, who lived at the time of the Roman Empire in the year 269, during the persecution of Christians.  According to legend, Emperor Claudius II was more interested in his army and in war than in family life, and he was convinced that the unmarried, without wives or children, were better soldiers than married and not have fear in battlefield.  As was true that the emperor was so far as to dictate a law prohibiting the marriage. Saint Valentine, however, defied the emperor and continued to celebrate marriages in secret, to be discovered, arrested and executed.  The other San Valentino also lived under the Roman Empire. He led a simple life and was especially kind to the children. One day, Valentino was thrown into prison by the Romans for refusing to worship their gods. It was said that children write messages of love for him and threw the window of his cell. These were the first cards of "valentines." But there is no historical record of that.  The cards we know today were first made around 1800 and some were very ornate and decorated with birds and flowers. Today, some of the cards are the most popular mood.

BRAZIL

In Brazil, despite being celebrated on the eve of the feast of Saint Anthony, the famous matchmaker, it all started with a campaign ad in 1949 by John Doria - then at Standard Advertising Agency - custom shop defunct Clipper. To improve sales in June, then the weakest months for trade, and with the support of the Confederation of Commerce of Sao Paulo, set the date with the slogan: "More than just kisses that proves love."

Brasil

JAPAN

In Japan the date was introduced in 1936 and the custom on this day is the women present their loved ones with boxes of chocolates. Although the date represents an opportunity for women to declare their love in recent years the giri choco (chocolate of courtesy or "obligation") is also present in the shopping basket for a large portion of the female population. But many people are reluctant to adopt the date, saying it is a business move, as not without reason, since the Valentine's Day accounts for about 20% of annual sales of chocolate factories in the archipelago . But what really counts is the intention and there is no denying that life is a little sweeter with these declarations of love and with these chocolates.
