T he importance of the first ball cannot beoverstated. I recently listened in on a seminar
discussing match techniques and strategy. The basicfindings were as follows:
30% of all points are decided in one shot. Let merepeat that: “30% of all points are decided in oneshot.” That applies across all levels of play. This is byfar the most frequent number of shots played perpoint in a tennis match. What does that tell you? Youneed to practice two shots the most if you want toimprove at winning tennis matches. What are thoseshots? Before I give the answer, I’d like you to take amoment and guess. Think about a tennis point. Thinkabout the first shot and the second shot. What arethe first two shots of any tennis match? In thisscenario, the players are hitting the first shot in andmissing the second shot. Write down your guess.
If you said serve, you are correct. That is the firstshot of any tennis point in a regular match. And 30%of all points in a match never go beyond the serve. That means, THE MOST MISSED SHOT IN TENNIS (30% ofthe time) is what shot? Again, write down your guess.
Ready? The Return of Serve. The most missed shot isthe return of serve. I’ll repeat: the most missed shot isthe return of serve.
What is the least practiced shot? You guessed it:the return of serve. What do you do to improve yourchances of winning tennis matches? Go find apartner who wants to practice their serve (along withthe overhead, the other least practiced shots intennis) and hit returns all afternoon. Become a returnmachine. Ask your local pro to hit serves at you for 20minutes of your next lesson, until you become areturn machine.
I have a rule in my matches. I’m not allowed tomiss more than five returns per set. Once I reach fivemisses, my sole goal every time my opponent isserving is to get the return in at all costs. Even if it’s asitter. I want to make them hit that third shot at allcosts. I block every ball into the middle of the courthigh over the net. Even if they put them all away onthe third shot, at least I’m making them hit one extraball per point.
Institute an attitude of consistency when returningserve and you’ll besurprised how manymore competitivepoints and gamesyou have permatch.Perhaps, you’lleven turn thetide and wina close one.If you instituteany of thesesuggestions, please let meknow.

Another holiday season plus a month has goneand due to newsletter deadlines, I have not
been able to congratulate Louis and the SocialCommittee for the wonderful holiday parties untilnow. Well done!!
Perhaps the best aspect of the memberChristmas Party were the guests; beautifully dressedgroups, socializing between tables, and in a veryhappy mood. Although I was unable to attend theNew Year's Eve event I am told that it was one ofthe best New Year parties ever.
Decorations were magnificent, the restaurantwas arranged with tall tables allowing attendees tocomfortably move around visiting others. It reallyworked well to have tall tables to rest one's drinksand consume the hors-d'oeuvres that were beingpassed around by the waiters before taking theirassigned seats. Both parties were filled close tocapacity. And in January Karaoke was enjoyed somuch that the time was extended. Karaoke wasfollowed by Chinese New Year at the end of themonth.
I would like to thank the Social Committee fortheir dedication to not only planning our parties buttaking on the additional task of distributing flyers to
the towers and the Promenade concerning theevents as we seem to struggle with timely notifyingmembers of the upcoming events. Newsletterinformation is often forgotten by the time of theevent so committee members share the task ofdistributing flyers with the special menu items for theweek appearing on one side and a description ofan event on the other side.
And a reminder – there are regular poker groupson most weeknights on the third floor in the smallerroom just down from the restaurant. The games startat 7 pm and new players are welcome to sit in. OnMondays, we have dance lessons and on Fridays, there's a very interesting group of Toastmasters, anationwide group that helps members on publicspeaking that is a lot of fun. Card games includingbridge, mah-jongg, etc. are ongoing mostafternoons in the City Cafe. Those interested ingoing to these games must visit a group to getinformation concerning joining the group.
Remember, we also have three pools, a gymwith daily classes, and a full-service tennis program. We have ongoing and almost constantentertainment!
See you at the Club!
