1.1 – WHY SPAIN?

Spain as a country is ranked 8th in the world by its scientific production in Mathematics.

Today there exist about 150 research groups in Applied and Industrial Mathematics

Page 4: Valencia meeting , March XX th 2013

1.1 – WHY SPAIN?

The Spanish societies in mathematics (RSME, SCM, SEIO and SEMA) have organized large scientific events in the past years: SEMA-SIAM DSPDEs’10 (Barcelona), the ICM Congress 2006 (Madrid), RSME-AMS Congress 2003 Sevilla.

The IMF predicts the starting of the recovery of the Spanish economy in 2014.

1.2 – WHY VALENCIA?

As Madrid and Barcelona had hosted in recent years several large congresses in research in mathematics, it was decided that ICIAM 2019 was to be hosted by a different city.

Cities offering to host ICIAM 2019 Congress Málaga, Sevilla, Valencia and Zaragoza

A selection process considering the advantages of each offer was carried on by the SEMA Executive Committee, and Valencia was eventually chosen.

2.1 – SEMA (INTRODUCCTION)

The Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics (SEMA) was created in 1991, witnessed by the success and continuity of the national Spanish Congress of Differential Equations and their Applications that began in 1978

SEMA is based upon the consideration that mathematical modeling and analysis, numerical simulation and control techniques are essential tools to understand and solve the many challenging problems in physics, chemistry, engineering, biomedical sciences, geosciences, economy, finance, among others.

Page 7: Valencia meeting , March XX th 2013

2.2 – SEMA (OBJECTIVES)

a) Highlight the most recent advances in applied mathematics and their applications to sciences, engineering and industry.

b) Emphasize industrial applications and computational science in new and emerging topics.

c) Demonstrate to young researchers the potential of applied mathematics to solve problems of high applied interest, and also of problems originating from industry to generate interesting and original mathematical problems.

d) Present the development of applied mathematics of emerging regions, in particular Mediterranean and African countries.

Page 8: Valencia meeting , March XX th 2013

2.3 – SEMA ACTIVITIES

SEMA and the applied mathematics community in Spain participate in a dynamic way in the organization of events related to the reinforcement of the research and the social impact of industrial and applied mathematics. This activity is threefold:

1. Organizing scientific events.2. Structuring the relationship with

industry3. Promoting scientific publications
