Southern California has seasons. We’ve

got the new fall TV lineup, college football,

and closest to my heart, the new car season.

We all love our cars, so it’s no wonder that

this month’s > valencia edition of 1100.

com is full of car-related topics. From colorful

balloons floating along Creekside to traffic

cameras haunting our intersections, our staff

wrote about bumper stickers and where to

get them removed.

This month’s contributors include Claire

Jennings, a new addition to our community,

and Rob Mansour, a local attorney and

part-time musician. They went to http://

valencia.1100.com, and uploaded their 120

word story and photos. You should too.

Now excuse me, I’ve got to check on my

backyard trees…for some reason the leaves

are turning brown and falling off.

There, scrawled in the dust on my

dashboard, a desperate plea. WASH ME.

Clean Subaru is an oxymoron isn’t it? But

for the girly teen driver, we take Subie to

the Valencia Car Wash. “We have a special

…” the guy begins, then, “neh, I don’t think

that’s gonna work.” The manager calls a

staff meeting over the hood and rubs at

the cats’ paw prints. They give me the bad

news: I need major detailing. I give them

the bad news: “Just rinse it off.” But, no,

these pros could not stop until my road

warrior was sparkling pretty inside and

out. Discovered next day across the airbag

compartment: two perfect sets of dusty

girly-teen toe prints.

Is it possible to have a family, drive an

SUV in suburbia, and not have one of

these? Observation tells me the answer is a

resounding “NO.” It seems that, along with

license and registration, every middle-class

family is now required to have a sticky, white

vinyl representation of themselves on the

back window of their vehicle. Often, family

members are depicted decked out in uniforms

or holding accessories that give insight into

the actual person’s age or personality. If your

family wagon can’t be properly indentified

from a distance when parked at the little

league field or ballet studio, design your own

family decal online at any number of vinyl

decal sites for an average of $4 a loved one.

In these tough economic times, what would

motivate you to drop twenty or thirty thousand

on a new car? Balloons, of course! Creekside

Drive is decked out like a birthday party. And

these are not ordinary, not-intended-for-children-

under-three latex balloons. These are commercial

inflatables. Nissan stands out, loud and circus-

like, with red and white checked balloons and

matching striped tent. Wait, can stripes and checks

really go together? Cadillac plays it conservatively

with primary colors. Lexus, having nothing to

prove, hoists muted white and yellow balloons.

The red, white and blue theme, of course, was

adopted by Chevy. Toyota? Well, Toyota put two

trucks in a pond. If that doesn’t drive unintended

acceleration right out of your head!

Do you remember when the red light

cameras were first installed in Valencia? I think

they made driving worse – you were either

braking way too soon or gunning it to make

sure your picture wasn’t snapped. Just last

week the Los Angeles City Council voted to

get rid of red light cameras in LA, but Santa

Clarita is choosing to keep them. Part of me

feels the decision is justified because people are

behaving themselves at intersections and we’ve

had zero fatalities and a significant reduction

in collisions. Each ticket is about $480 and

the city gets $150. In 2010, SCV wrote 6000

camera tickets yielding the city $125,000.

Unlike LA, SCV does enforce its tickets, so until

we get rid of them, “Say Cheeeze...!”

Fall in Montana opens hunting season

for turkeys, partridge, and mountain grouse.

Fall in Valencia coincides with back-to-

school, also known as “fundraising season.”

With the help of just one Rio Norte kid, it

is possible to net up to 18 different types of

cookie dough and 300 magazines, with no

limits or special permit required. If you prefer

to hunt in a pack, you can attend Pampered

Chef or Salt City Candle parties organized

to raise capital for VHS choir kids hoping

to get to London to sing in the Olympic’s

Opening Ceremonies. With so much game

now available what will you go after? Will

an empty tin pail of cheddar popcorn look

tough hanging above your fireplace?

For those of us who grew up thinking

Harry Carey was something General Saito

does to himself with a long sword at the end

of Bridge on the River Kwai, here’s a priceless

piece of local history. The Tesoro del Valle

development was built on the site of the

Harry Carey ranch, owned by not one Harry

Carey but two - junior and senior. (Netflix

Red River, there’s a Harry Carey on either

end of the movie.) The adobe ranch house is

now a county park. Fire, flood, John Wayne,

a Navajo trading post, ample shade - this

historic site has everything. Even Farmer John,

yes, THE Farmer John, lived here (but not the

hogs). Visit this local gem before somebody

installs those forbidding velvet museum ropes!

Admittedly, I was not expecting to encounter

an ambitious art installment in Valencia. Yet, there

in the Decoro Ralph’s grocery store, a distinctive

sculpture. The material was repurposed Diet

Coke boxes, the artist anonymous, and the

overriding theme spelled out in plain English:

Awesometown. I marveled at the perceptive,

existential statement. Yes, this is Awesometown.

Valencia has grown increasingly awesome as

of late. With this art movement already taking

root, and a fleet of half-heartedly modified city

buses labeled “Hometown Trolleys” trolling the

streets, one can sense a bit of Bay Area influence.

Perhaps Rice-a-Roni boxes would serve as an

appropriate medium with which Ralphs’ own

Michelangelo could craft his next masterpiece.
