Pressure-Lok® Syringe Features

Pressure-Lok® Syringe FeaturesPTFE Plunger Tip

Plunger tips are fabricated of PTFE, stress-formed by our ownspecial process to insure a leak-tight seal. The self-lubricating plunger tip stays smooth for the life of thesyringe, with none of the freezing up or residue build-upassociated with conventional all-metal plungers.

PTFE-Sealed Needle

Standard needle attachment includes a barrier sleeve orpacking of PTFE on the rear of the needle at the zero point.This isolates the sample from the needle cement, preventingpossible dissolution of the adhesive or contamination of thesample. Many models are also available in a luer-tip version.

Ultra-Smooth Bore

Syringe barrels up to 100 µl are hand-fabricated from high quality borosilicateglass, manufactured to our specifications. The extremely smooth bore preventsundue wear of the plunger tip and insures a smooth, durable seal.

Hand Calibration

Each barrel undergoes a series of quality checks, including hand-calibrationof consistent volume delivery. After final assembly of each lot, volumedelivery is checked again with an electronic microbalance. These carefulsteps in quality control insure that every Pressure-Lok® microsyringemeasures up to today’s stringent requirements for precision and accuracy.

Easily Replaceable Parts

Depending on the specific model, some or all of the wear parts can be easilyreplaced, optimizing your equipment investment.

Shaped Rear Flange

All syringes have a rear flange to provide a secure grip and keep the syringe fromrolling.

Low Dead Volume

Special Features

Special Features of Select ModelsPressurized Sample Storage

Several of our syringes have a built-in valve to allow sample storage at up to250 psi. This feature also allows pre-pressurization of the sample before injectionso that the sample is flushed into the column instantaneously, providing betterresolution. For conventional syringes, our Mininert syringe valve adds this capacity.

Removable Needles

Many models offer a special pressure-tight, low dead volume connection tofacilitate easy removal and replacement of needles.

Optional Luer Tip for Convenience

Although our standard PTFE-sealed needle offers superior performance, wealso offer the added convenience of luer-tip models.

Positive Rear Plunger Stop

If plunger damage from accidental plunger removal has been a problem,select one of our syringes with this feature.

Leak-tight to 250 psiLiquids and gases

Turn the nosepiece counterclockwise two turns and thevalve is closed. Insert the needle through the septum,then start pushing the plunger as you turn the nosepiececlockwise. Carrier backflushing is eliminated, resulting insharper peaks and better separations. When the plungeris fully depressed, the plunger face comes into firm, flushcontact with the bottom of the front packing, forcingessentially all of the sample out – there is virtually nocompressible dead volume remaining. The very smallinternal diameter of the needle also contributes to thedead volume minimization.

In addition to the characteristics which make it unique,the Series A gas syringe has all the standard Pressure-Lok® features such as a PTFE plunger tip, PTFE-sealedneedle, and ultrasmooth bore.

Series A-2 Pressure-Lok®

Series A-2All the advantages of the Series A syringe plus:

The A-2 features a push-button valve, which allowssample storage to 250 psi in syringes as small as 25 µl.This is useful with small liquid samples containing low-boiling components which would be lost throughevaporation using ordinary syringes.

The positive rear stop (in 250 µl and larger sizes)prevents plunger blowout at elevated pressures,protecting against sample loss or operator injury. Likethe Series A gas syringe, the A-2 has all the standardPressure-Lok® features such as a PTFE plunger tip, PTFE-sealed needle, and ultrasmooth bore. The detection of low levels of various environmentalcontaminants can require extraordinarily large samples.Magnum syringes facilitate the trapping of such samplesin remote locations. A built-in valve allows the sample tobe sealed within the syringe, maintaining sampleintegrity during transportation to the analysis site.

Magnums have been successfully used to sampleatmospheric contaminants such as sulfur dioxide andoxides of nitrogen at distant points of the earth. Thepositive displacement capability of the durable PTFEplunger seal permits use in a variety of subsequentprocedures involving extraction or concentration oftrace components. (With a cryogenic enrichmentapparatus, for example.)

The standard termination is a female threaded fitting(1/4-28), which accepts a variety of Cheminert® connectorsor adapters. Specially formed seals permit leak-tightoperation to 30 psi (approximately 2 atmospheres).Because of the obvious danger in overpressurizing any glasscontainer, the internal pressure of a Magnum gas syringeshould never exceed 2 atmospheres.

Replacement Needles

Replacement Needles for Gas/Liquid SyringesSlip-on needles for Series A-2, C, and D syringes feature a needle extensionthrough the hub that fits inside the PTFE tip on the syringe. This designeliminates the dead volume inherent in conventional hubbed needles.

Needles are manufactured to exacting tolerances from high precisionstainless steel tube stock. The point styles and lengths listed below arestandard, but we are willing to supply others. Let us know yourrequirements.

The Mini Injector is ideal for capillary GC work, allowing reproducibleinjection of small samples (down to 0.01 µl) without a splitter. This ispossible through our unique use of a plunger-within-a-needle. The samplevolume is carried in a precisely measurable groove ringing the wire plunger,with a durable PTFE packing to prevent leakage.

In use, the plunger is extended beyond the needle tip and dipped into thesample, where capillary action fills the groove. Then the plunger is drawnthrough a PTFE wiper and back into the needle for protection. When theneedle is inserted into the inlet and the plunger is depressed, the samplecarried on the plunger groove enters the heated zone, where it is flash-vaporized and swept into the column.

The Pressure-Flo high pressure syringe is a tried and true method of takinghomogeneous high pressure samples from a cylinder or “bomb”. It containsthe sample in a calibrated needle with a wire plunger to displace it and PTFEpacking to seal it in, permitting injection of the sample directly through theGC septum inlet for convenience and simplicity.

The body of the syringe is lightweight for easy handling. It houses a specialcrimped PTFE packing which seals firmly at pressures up to 500 psi even undersevere operating conditions. Threads allow the syringe to make up on a cylindervia the special adapters listed below. Once the syringe is screwed tight, thecylinder valve is opened and the plunger is depressed, extending the needle intothe liquid zone. Once sample is drawn into the syringe, it is stored pressure-tightwhile the cylinder valve is closed and the syringe is removed from the adapter.

To inject the sample, the nose of the syringe is pressed very firmly against theseptum to form a pressure-tight seal. (This requires a minimum 1/8" hole in theseptum cap.) As this is done, the pointed tip of the needle punctures the septum.When the large handle is pushed in, the needle containing the sample is insertedinto the injection port without any loss of contents.

Mininert push-button valves are highly dependable, leak-tight closures forscrew-cap vials and other laboratory containers. When used with a glass vial,only PTFE and glass are in contact with the contents. Their unique featuresmake Mininert valves the ideal closure for calibration standards, air- ormoisture-sensitive fluids, derivatizing reagents, volatile chemicals, etc.

Operation is extremely simple – push the green button to open the valve,insert the needle through the septum and take a sample, withdraw theneedle, and push the red button to close the valve.

TEMPERATURE

Mininert valves can beused at temperature up to105°F. However, after useat high temperatures, thevalve may leak slightlywhen cooled to roomtemperature.

PRESSURE

The sealing ability ofMininert valves is morethan adequate to containmost volatile liquids andgases at low pressures.Mininert valves have beenused as high as 120 psiwithout leakage, but thisis NOT a recommendationfor pressurizing glasscontainers to these levels.Such pressurization ofglass containers can beextremely dangerous.

CHEMICALRESISTANCE

PTFE is highly inert andmay be used with mostcommon materials. It isparticularly useful forworking with most acidsand organic solvents.However, problems maybe encountered whenused with organometallicsand some strong bases.We recommend actualexposure test before usewith any material.

PEEK tubing is strong enough for continuous use at HPLC pressurewithout swelling or bursting. The dense polymer structure of VICIPEEK tubing eliminates the permeability to organic solvents thatcauses other polymer tubing, such as ETFE, to “sweat”.

PEEK tubing is compatible with almost any of the solvents commonly used inHPLC. It is not affected by halide salts, high strength buffers, or other aggressivemobile phases that corrode stainless steel. The polymer surface will not leachmetal ions into the eluent or extract metal-sensitive components from the sample.However, dichloromethane, THF, and DMSO may cause the tubing to swell.

Our striped PEEK tubing is manufactured of virgin natural PEEK, coded with acolored stripe for easy identification of the tubing ID. The color dye for the stripeis applied only to the outer surface, ensuring maximum chemical resistance andbiocompatibility.

Low Pressure FittingsCheminert low pressure fittings are ideally suited for flow injection analysis, low pressure liquidchromatography, and stream sampling devices. They may be safely used at pressures up to500 psi and temperatures to 50°C. Two designs of low pressure tube end fittings are available.Flangeless tube end fittings utilize our new collapsible ferrule, which grips the tubing as thefitting is tightened without significantly reducing the tube ID. Standard tube end fittings are retainedon polymeric tubing by a flange formed with a Cheminert flanging tool.

Flangeless tube end fittings

Flangeless tube end fittings eliminate the flanging toolrequired with standard tube end fittings. The nut turnson the tubing as freely as with our flanged fitting,eliminating the possibility of cracking or unscrewingthat can occur when plastic tubing is subjected totwisting as fittings are connected.

Cheminert flangeless fittings include our collapsibleferrule design (patent pending). This innovative designutilizes a one-piece ferrule engineered to collapse as itis tightened. The collapse takes place in a very narrowarea, and results in a very effective seal with virtually

no distortion of the tubing ID and no dead volume. The assembly is rated at500 psi liquid when tightened by hand. Since only the tubing and the ferrulecome into contact with the solution, the result is an inert system. Use CTFEferrules for soft tubing (PTFE, FEP, etc.), but use PEEK ferrules for hardertubing (PEEK, ETFE, polyurethane, etc.)

Cheminert tube end fittings work with any 1/16" or 1/8" OD polymerictubing, and come in twelve different colors for system color coding.

Standard flanged tube end fittings

The basic component of the Cheminert system is thepolypropylene nut, retained on PTFE or FEP tubing by aflange formed with a Cheminert flanging tool (page 88).This is an excellent method for connecting fluorocarbontubing, as there is no reduction of the inside diameterand no binding or twisting of the tubing when the fittingis tightened. A mating of the parts is achieved with zerodead volume, making this an ideal fitting for biologicalsystems.

Cheminert tube end fittings come in twelve differentcolors for system color coding, and are available for 1/16" or 1/8" ODfluorocarbon tubing. (While in theory other polymers could be molded toform a flange, only fluorocarbons such as PTFE or FEP have low-temperaturemalleability and good form retention at operating temperatures.) Tube endfittings attach directly to Cheminert valves and fittings, and are easily joinedto each other with a union. Finger-tightness is all that is required to make aleak-free seal at 500 psi liquid, although for long term reliability a wrenchcould be used to apply an additional 1/8 turn.

Flanging tools

The flanging tool makes the flange which retains the standard tubeend fitting and washer on PTFE or FEP tubing. With this tool lengthsof tubing may be easily assembled to any required dimension. Thetime required is only 5 to 10 seconds per flange.

Cheminert® High Pressure

Cheminert High Pressure FIttingsThe Cheminert line of PEEK high pressure fittings is rated at 5000 psi with fingertight nuts, well beyondthe burst strength of most PEEK tubing.

Internal nuts – high pressure PEEK

PEEK nuts are used in Cheminert polymeric valves with zero dead volume fittings. They canalso be used as alternatives to standard stainless steel Valco nuts when polymeric ferrules areused (up to approximately 175°C). Fingertight nuts have a knurled surface designed to providesufficient sealing force on the ferrule without wrenches. Hex style nuts allow wrench tightening;however, since they are polymeric, they can break and are recommended for use only whenspace is limited and fingers won’t fit.

Caution: PEEK nuts are intended for use only with polymeric ferrules, which seal with lowerforce than their stainless steel counterparts. Overtightening can result in breakage.

The new VICI Precision Sampling hollow plunger syringe (patent pending) withtwo integrated valves opens a whole new world of application possibilities:

• Dispense a viscous sample more easily by introducing it into the rear of thesyringe instead of drawing it up through the needle.

• Eliminate sample-to-sample cross contamination by giving the syringe athorough cleaning with a rinse introduced through the plunger.

• Sample continuously without ever withdrawing the needle from the originalpoint of entry. Just close the on/off valve after drawing sample through theneedle, and the sample is redirected out the plunger valve as the plunger isdepressed.

Using this syringe typically involves less plunger manipulation than doing thesame operation with a standard syringe, so you get the additional benefits ofsaved time and reduced plunger wear.
