We will be focusing spe- cifically on academic vocabulary. When used effectively, academic language provides everyone a much clearer focus, so we, as teachers, communicate better, our students learn better, and schools will achieve better results” (Johnson, 2009, p.1). Academic vocabulary is used across all subjects. They are words like assemble, clarify, and adapt that students will be exposed to in all academic settings but unfortunately are often words that students may not fully understand. This language gap then affects student under- standing and consequently their achievement scores in all subject areas. We are on a mission to close that gap at our school and we hope you will support us in achieving our goal. First of all, to give you a better understanding, you may watch a short video by clicking here. (The url for the video is at the end of this page) The video is about 7 minutes and it does a great job of explaining the different types of vocabulary words and why academic vocabulary is so important. Next, I have in- cluded the vocabulary words for each class in this newsletter so that from time to time you as parents might help to enforce the words that we are learning at school. We will only be working on 25 words at one time as we have found that 75 words is overwhelming all at once. Your teacher will send home the 25 words they are working on this term. Maybe you could find a way to use them in your daily conversations or make a game that brings the words to your child’s attention. Whatever you can do to help review the words will be helpful to your child when he/she is learning the words at school. Our school goal is to have 80% of our students from K-9 know 80% of the academic words for their grade grouping by June 2015. We are excited about having some fun with academic vocabulary at school and im- proving student achievement at the same time! We look forward to hearing how you are using the words at home. If you have an idea to share we would love to hear it. Let us know. We will keep you posted on our progress at school as we go along. Academic Language! Academic Literacy! Let’s go Mustangs! School Goal – Vocabulary

In addition to the Math Momentum initiative and our work with Balanced Literacy, Val Marie School has

chosen to pinpoint our focus this year on a Vocabulary Goal for our School Goal. We will be focusing spe-

cifically on academic vocabulary. When used effectively, academic language provides everyone a much

clearer focus, so we, as teachers, communicate better, our students learn better, and schools will achieve

better results” (Johnson, 2009, p.1). Academic vocabulary is used across all subjects. They are words like

assemble, clarify, and adapt that students will be exposed to in all academic settings but unfortunately

are often words that students may not fully understand. This language gap then affects student under-

standing and consequently their achievement scores in all subject areas. We are on a mission to close that

gap at our school and we hope you will support us in achieving our goal.

First of all, to give you a better understanding, you may watch a short video by clicking here. (The url for

the video is at the end of this page) The video is about 7 minutes and it does a great job of explaining

the different types of vocabulary words and why academic vocabulary is so important. Next, I have in-

cluded the vocabulary words for each class in this newsletter so that from time to time you as parents

might help to enforce the words that we are learning at school. We will only be working on 25 words at

one time as we have found that 75 words is overwhelming all at once. Your teacher will send home the 25

words they are working on this term. Maybe you could find a way to use them in your daily conversations

or make a game that brings the words to your child’s attention. Whatever you can do to help review the

words will be helpful to your child when he/she is learning the words at school.

Our school goal is to have 80% of our students from K-9 know 80% of the academic words for their grade

grouping by June 2015. We are excited about having some fun with academic vocabulary at school and im-

proving student achievement at the same time! We look forward to hearing how you are using the words at

On September 17th, January Legault took

three of Val Marie School's S.R.C. members

Karissa Duque'e, Kassi James, and Hayley Ol-

son to Nipawin for a Saskatchewan Student

Leadership conference that ran from Septem-

ber 17th to September 19th. The S.R.C. girls

got to stay at billets that were close to the

Nipawin school where the conference was

held. They all got to par/cipate in fun ac/vi-

/es, listen to amazing speakers with unfor-

ge'able stories and life lessons, and meet in-

teres/ng new people from all over Saskatche-

wan. There was also a banquet and a neon-

themed dance that the girls went to and en-

joyed. January and the girls overall had a great

/me - from the driving, to the fun ac/vi/es

they got to experience on the trip. The S.R.C.

girls would like to thank January Legault for

taking them on this unforge'able trip to

Nipawin where the S.R.C. and January will use

some ideas to make our school even be'er.

The Val Marie Me to We Club would just like to thank everyone who came and supported us at the

pancake breakfast. We would also like to thank you for supporting us by buying our Purdy’s chocolates;

they are still available and you can purchase them from any Me to We member (Rhonda, Hayley, Kassi,

Charlie, Kody, or Alex) if you would like more! Halloween is coming up and we will be doing our annual “We

Scare Hunger” campaign. This year we will be doing it a little differently, we will be dropping off plastic

bags at people’s houses on the 29th and if you wish to donate non-perishable items you can place them in

the bag and hang them on your door. We will be picking them up on the 31st from 3-6 pm.

Last year after We Day the club decided that we wanted to build a school. It took a lot of hard

work and support from the community but we are almost there. We have raised just over $9,000 out of

the $10,000 dollars that we need. We are so close to our goal and we would just like to again thank you

all for your support!

The junior mixed volleyball team has been super busy during the month of September.

We hosted 3 league games and aended a tournament in Kincaid. We had close matches

with the Fron!er boys, which resulted with 3-2 win for Fron!er. When we played the

Eastend girls, Val Marie won all 6 sets! We fought hard against the Shaunavon girls but

ended up losing to them. In Kincaid, we had close sets with Ponteix and Lafleche and we

won our sets against Kincaid to place 3rd in tournament! The kids had a great experience

and learned lots!

Up next we travelled to Shaunavon, Fron!er and Eastend to finish up our league games.

We will host one more home game on October 28th against Kincaid. Then on November

1st, we will travel to Eastend to par!cipate in playoffs!

I would also like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Mrs.

Legault and all the parents that have cooked in the can-

teen and driven us to games. It's great to have so much

support!

I am looking forward to the second half of our season!

Thanks

Jade McGuire

The Terry Fox Hike

Our school par/cipated in the Na/onal School Terry Fox Run this year on Fri-

day, Sept. 26th

. Along with Grasslands Na/onal Park staff we had a wonderful

/me hiking Eagle Bu'e Trail. The weather co-operated and the wind thankfully

kept the mosquitos at bay. We enjoyed the awesome views from every part of

the trail. A big thank-you to the GNP staff for organizing the event this year and

providing refreshments and cake a?er the hike.

So far we have raised $1059.65! Thanks so much to everyone who has do-

nated. We will be collec/ng pledges un/l Oct. 15th

. Anyone wishing to donate

but haven’t been approached are invited to contact the school or Mrs. Glas.

Thank-you.
