Vaishali district is one of the thirty-eight districts of the state of Bihar. It formed in 1972, separated from Muzaffarpur district.

The district is surrounded by Muzaffarpur district in the North, Samastipur district in the East and Ganga River in South and Gandak River in West.

The Vaishali district is a part of Tirhut division and the district headquarters are at Hajipur town.

Hajipur is separated from the State’s biggest city Patna by a River Ganga. It is the second fastest growing city in the state.

INTRODUCTION

Vaishali got its name from King Vishal, a predecessor to Lord Ram. Vaishali finds reference in the Indian epics Ramayana.

Vaishali was the capital of the Lichchavi State, considered as the First Republic in the World.

It is said that the Lord Buddha, delivered his last semon and announced his Mahaparinirvana during his visit to Vaishali. 100 years after the Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana, second Buddhist Council was held at Vaishali.

Jain Tirthankar Lord Mahavir was said to be born at Vaishali to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala.

Amrapali the famous courtesan, has invited Lord Buddha to her house and Lord has visited her place. With Lord Buddha’s visit, Amrapali was purged with all impurities, she gifted her mango grove to the Sangh and joined Buddhism.

Ananda, the favorite disciple of Buddha, attained Nirvana in the midst of Ganga outside Vaishali.

In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Vaishali one of the country's 250 most backward districts.

Primarily, Vaishali has an agrarian economy, being dependent mainly on agriculture and small businesses

Vaishali has a strong agricultural background and has achieved commendable growth in this field over the last few decades. Agriculture land in the Vaishali District has rich fertility and hence farmers take 3 times agricultural use of its land.

Hajipur is main industrial city of Vaishali District. It has large scale beverages industries. Britannia Industries has its unit at Hajipur. Major exportable items from the district are Cold Drinks, packaged Drinking Waters, Biscuits and other bakery products.

Vaishali Districts has a potential for medium and small scale industries in Food Processing Units, Banana and its products, Packaged Drinking Water units, Poultry units and Bio fertilizer units.

AGRICULTURE AND FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY

Vaishali being in Gangetic and Gandak plains ( Doab), it has rich fertility in the land and hence farmers almost takes 3 times agricultural use of it’s land

Paddy, Wheat, Maize, tobacco, oil-seeds are the main agricultural crops. Vaishali district is famous for export of food processing products especially

pickle. One of the best rice, wheat and vegetable growing area in the state of Bihar Excellent scope for rice mills, food processing industries for pickle and fruit

HERITAGE & TOURISM

Vaishali district has Jainism and Buddhism monuments. It is one of the holiest place for Buddhists.

Some of the tourist places are as follows Ashokan Pillar: Emperor Ashoka built The Lion Pillar at Kolhua. It is made of a highly

polished single piece of red sandstone, surmounted by a bell shaped capital, 18.3 m high

Bawan Pokhar Temple: An old temple built in the Pala period stands on the northern bank of Bawan Pokhar and enshrines beautiful images of several Hindu gods

Budha Stupa-I:The exterior of this stupa which is now in a dilapidated condition has a plain surface. One eighth of the sacred ashes of the lord Buddha were enshrined here in a stone casket.

Budha Stupa-II: Excavation at this site in 1958 led to the discovery of another casket containing the ashes of the Lord Buddha.

Abhiskek Pushkarn (Coronation tank): It contains water that was believed to be sacred in the old days. All of Vaishali's elected representative were anointed here before their swearing in. The Lichchavi stupa was located near here.

Kundalpur: Birth place of Lord Mahavira. 4Km.It is believed that the Jain Tirthankar, Lord Mahavir was born over 2550 years ago. Mahavir is said to have spent the first 22 years of his life here.

Raja Vishal ka Garh: A huge mound with a circumference about one Kilometer and walls nearly 2 m high with a 43m wide moat around them, is said to be the ancient parliament house. Over seven thousand representatives of the federal assembly gathered here to legislate and discuss the problems of the day.

Shanti Stupa: On the south bank of the coronation tank, built by Buddha Vihar Society.
