DONOR SPOTLIGHT4PAT HAMMON

Pat Hammon’s impact at the Vail Valley Campus of Colorado Mountain College is a bit like the ripples in a lake…ever expanding and shifting and much bigger than the initial splash.

The former US Army Nurse first came to CMC as a student. She was interested in obtaining her Wilderness Leadership degree, so she signed up for a class on the archaeology of Colorado. That was 1995. She never did earn that degree, but became an instructor at the college, teaching in both the Certified Nurse Aide and Personal Care Attendant fields.

Then, she shifted gears and started working with local veteran groups as Eagle County’s Veteran Service Officer. She wanted to build a solid community, and sought a mid-valley location for veterans and their families to meet for fellowship, and thought of CMC. Her “Coffee & Donuts & Yoga for Veterans” program still meets here every Monday.

“CMC is just a jewel in our community,” Hammon said. “I see the impact this school has, how needed this school is, and what the opportunities for young people are here. Our whole community benefits!”

Hammon has also been instrumental in establishing and continuing several scholarship opportunities for students. She started a CNA scholarship in her mother’s name. She uses her role in the Western Eagle Valley Rotary to ensure the scholarship from that organization continues to support local students. And, she played a large role in establishing the new VFW Lou Meskimen Scholarship, in honor of a longtime local and colorful veteran. She is also a member of our Women in Philanthropy and contributes every year to the Friends of Mylissa Memorial Scholarship.

“I just wish I could do more,” Hammon said. “I love to walk down the hallway and see everything from high school juniors to senior citizens in the classrooms and enjoying learning. That’s what’s so special about this community and so amazing about this place.”

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT4SPANISH IN THE COMMUNITY

You never know where a conversation will go. After chatting with Magda King, the General Manager of the Antlers at Vail, King, and representatives from Colorado Mountain College, Four Seasons Resort Vail and the Sonnenalp collaborated to bring a Spanish Proficiency Certificate to these resorts for their employees. This program is the first of its kind, focused on the Spanish language skills the employees need, at a pace and place that makes it convenient for them. Classes are held once a week for three hours at The Antlers. Being willing to meet the need where it existed made this partnership possible.

“I saw the need of citizens of the world,” explained King, whose native language is Spanish. “In this community, I recognized the lack of interracial/intercultural communication to help us `beat at the same compass.’ I think this endeavor will support us to reach new heights.”

So far, response from the employees in the program has been encouraging. King said that not only are the participants more engaged, integration and morale have been boosted by this effort.

“My English-speaking staff feels taken care of,” King said. “They feel appreciated and welcomed. They also feel more connected with our Hispanic workers, and they are more understanding of our Hispanic customers.”

While the employees currently enrolled still have many more semesters of work before earning their Spanish Language Proficiency certificate, King is proud of the work her employees have put in so far.

The Spanish Language - Comprehensive Track certificate requires 18 credits in Spanish Language courses. The Spanish Language - Conversational Track certificate requires 17 credits. The classes in both of these tracks can be applied to a Spanish major at any Colorado institution that offers a major in Spanish, and fulfill the requirements for an associate degree in Spanish.

By the end of the program, the participants in the Vail hospitality program can expect to have an intermediate low-, mid- or high-level of proficiency in Spanish, which will ultimately benefit the resorts, their guests and their employees, leading to more conversations in more languages. And, who knows where that will lead.

English & Communication - For English as Second Language (ESL) classes, see page 7.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT4ELEMENTARY EDUCATION HAS FIRST GRADUATES

In May 2018, the first students will graduate from CMC’s Teacher Education Program. Ten amazing teaching candidates, including six from the Vail Valley Campus, will become licensed teachers! Over the course of their time at CMC, they have taken 22 education courses, including teaching methods classes for specific content areas. They have spent at least 1,260 hours in the classroom, of which almost 1,000 hours were in a year-long internship in one of the local K-6 classrooms. Along with their bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, they also will receive a CLD (Cultural and Linguistically Diverse) Endorsement. This endorsement enables them to be the best teacher they can be for our diverse population. Our new teachers put their heart and soul into teaching, and our community will be better for it!

“Throughout my journey in the Education Program, I had the privilege to meet outstanding educators, faculty, staff, and amazing donors. I had the opportunity to build strong meaningful relationships with students and families. As my journey as a teaching intern in Eagle County School District (ECSD) comes to an end, and the beginning of my future as a certified teacher starts, I am looking forward to giving back to my community. “

- Saira Hernandez

“I have received support and guidance from teachers, colleagues, and scholarship donors. I will be forever grateful. Something that I look forward to

when I become a teacher is making positive impacts in my students’ lives!”

- Johanna Carrazco-Gonzalez

“In this program, I have been challenged in a way that has changed who I am. I have had the honor of becoming someone that I am confident will be able to teach. I can’t wait to get into my own classroom, with all the knowledge and experience that I have, and create a more meaningful education for students. The best part: I have come to understand and accept that I may not know everything, but I can be prepared to be MY BEST.”

- Faith Calvo

Register Early! Each class has both a minimum and maximum number of students who may enroll. It’s best to register early to ensure your spot. Please register at least one week prior to the start of class to ensure minimum enrollment is met. Registration for all Summer classes is now open.

GET OUT OF THE BOX - IMPROVE YOUR CAREER, LIFE & RELATIONSHIPSDo you have untapped potential, want to make a change in your life, or think you are in a rut? Are you ready for a new stage in your life but just don’t know how to get there? We all think about doing something different, but never do it. We talk about getting out of the box and pursuing success, but most times we never make the effort to make it happen. This class is designed to change that. Key skills necessary to survive today are resilience, adaptability, and the capability to “reinvent” oneself. This class will provide participants the insights and tools necessary to make personal changes and continue that effort successfully. It will start the attendees on a new path with an eye-opening and non-threatening understanding of themselves, out of the box thinking, and their untapped potential. This class will address questions such as: What is “my box” and how do I get out? How do I start changing my life in the direction that I want to go? What do I need to do to stay the course? What techniques are there to help me be successful in my quest for change? You will learn the origin of your personal constraints, how to identify and change them, and how to start tapping into your inner strength and creativity. During this class, you will take the first steps towards your goals. This class involves active participation, hard personal work, and a willingness to have an open mind. Participants will be provided with the book “Please Understand Me.”
